Kuuku Owiredu stood still just staring at Rashid, his expression one of confusion and disbelief, then he pulled out a chair and sat down.
“Would you mind telling me what all that was about?” he asked softly. “Seriously, back there, the fella I saw wasn’t the Rashid I’ve come to like and respect so much.”
Rashid sighed and rubbed his forehead.
“That girl brings out the worst in me, Kuuku,” he said in a tired voice. “Forget it for now. Prepare Madam Bio for surgery immediately.”
Kuuku shook his head.
“No, can’t do,” he said.
Rashid raised his eyebrows.
“Why? Because of her threats? The woman will surely die if she is moved!”
“I know, Rashid, I know. But this centre has a good reputation, and I see bad apple written all over this one. I know Elaine, and she doesn’t issue idle threats. And the spate of bad surgeries that rocked the country has made informed consent a big issue, Rashid. Image of the hospital must be protected.”
“At what cost?” Rashid asked coldly. “C’mon, Kuuku. I’ll take the blame for whatever she does, but I’m not letting that woman die because of her daughter’s naivety and phobia! Don’t let me pull rank over you, my friend, please don’t push me to that!”
Kuuku leaned across the desk, and his face was bleak with sudden anger.
“You think I’m doing this for myself, or the hospital?” he asked tightly. “I’m doing this to protect you! That woman is dead already, I’m sorry to say, and I don’t want you risking your talent and reputation over her! You said it yourself that she has only about ten percent chance of surviving, damn it! Let Elaine take her to Korle Bu or whereever if she insists!”
“No, I can’t do that, Kuuku, please!” Rashid said earnestly. “I can’t endanger the life of a patient when I know I can be of some help. Let Elaine carry on with her threat, I don’t care! But I’m going to do my best for the poor woman, with or without your help. I’m sorry, but that’s the way it is going to play out!”
They looked at each other for some time, then Kuuku sighed and threw up his hands.
“Fine then, but only on one condition!” he said.
“Shoot.”
“We ran it through the Director.”
“Come on, Kuuku!”
“This is major, Rashid! He has to know, and his take is final. Please!”
Rashid nodded.
“Alright, alright, damn it. Do it already!”
Ten minutes later, they were seated in the huge, luxurious office of Laryea Odamten. He listened to them without interruptions, then he finally looked at Rashid Braimah.
“Whatever bad blood is between you and that young lady is your private business, son. The reputation of this institution is my business, you understand?”
Rashid nodded.
“I do, sir. But, please, I have to do this.”
“Can’t be done without the next of kin signing the informed consent form, I’m sorry. Some serious litigation cases, suits, improper conduct charges already running riot against some major health centres in the country. I’m not adding us to the list, son.”
“Good Lord! Doesn’t she have any other children, relatives?”
“No, unfortunately, not that we know of,” Kuuku Owiredu said. “Maame Bio settled here about twenty-five years ago with her baby girl, and opened a waakye joint, sent her child to school, secondary school, nursing training, all by her lonesome self. No relatives.”
“What the hell!” Rashid said with surprise. “She went to nursing training? Dropped out, no doubt!”
“No, son,” Laryea said. “She actually completed, brilliant results, and we employed her here as a nurse.”
Rashid looked at them, incredible.
“She was a nurse here? A nurse?” he asked, dumbfounded. “Surely, you must be shitting me… oops, sorry for my choice of words, sir.”
“She still is,” Kuuku said. “When her mother fell ill, she took her accumulated leave to raise some funds, as she said. We advanced her some loan, but couldn’t go above the threshold. She said she would raise the rest for the specialist.”
“Jesus H. Christ!” Rashid said and shook his head with wonder. “Dios es maravilloso! Huh?”
Kuuku asked. “What was that?”
“God is wonderful,” Rashid said with a smile. “Spanish. Damn, I’ll be damned!”
He sighed and shook his head again. Ella Silk was turning out to be a conundrum of surprises, and suddenly he was not feeling so enthused about being in the Mountains.
“I’m taking the woman to the surgical table, sir,” he said finally. “I will take all the blame, and I’ll resign my position too.”
“No, you won’t, Rashid!” Kuuku cried with alarm. “What kind of devilry at all has entered you today? Even if you resign you could still end up in court, probably even jail!”
Laryea Odamten’s face was bleak.
“You’ll do no such thing, son!”
“But I can’t let her move that woman because of me, and endanger her life!”
“I know how principled you are, son,” Laryea said thoughtfully. “And there’s only one solution for this.”
“I’m listening, sir.”
“We’ll do this together,” Laryea Odamten said. “You, me, Kuuku. And we’ll record every step, every little thing we do. If she sues, and it goes to court, the tape would be reviewed by experts.”
“Sir, no!” Rashid said with sudden concern. “It still wouldn’t prevent a backlash against the fact that we flouted an important code regarding informed consent! I will not expose you to that, sir, no way!”
“You have no other choice, son,” the Director said calmly. “If she knows I’m involved, she might rescind her decisions, especially if her mother survives.”
“Sir!”
“We’re wasting time. Let’s get going. Kuuku, let the nurses know. Prep up the woman.”
“Yes, sir, immediately.”
Rashid only sighed; he knew he could not sway Laryea from his decision.
