The Affair drama intensifies…
Henrik stayed on the balcony and watched the calm night. He leaned over the rails and listened to the chirping of the birds.
He tried to blot out the sight of that voluptuous woman on the bed by flipping through pictures of him, Kiara-Joy and his daughter, Chelsca on his phone. Oh, he wished they were there with him. He paused at their wedding picture and remembered how proud he was when he saw her in her gown and how breathtaking she had been. He knew God had blessed him with everything he needed in a woman. Henrik remembered how lovely she looked and how the depth of her feelings for him showed in her eyes when they took their vows.
He descended the stairs and walked to the Hotel garden. He strode through the garden and touched virtually every flower he found. When he got tired, he sat on one of the benches. He flipped through his phone again and came to a picture of him and Kiara-Joy on his graduation from Law School and relived how his life with Kiara-Joy started that fateful day when he had walked nervously through the main entrance of the Law School.
He was part of the few candidates selected for the interview for that years’ admissions. Henrik had been a bit tensed and felt out of place as he walked towards the reception area, and before he could make the turn to the waiting room, he came face to face with Kiara-Joy. Her broad smile melted all the tensions he was experiencing.
“Good morning, I take it you are here for the interview,” she said with an infectious smile.
Henrik was so absorbed in looking at her ethereal beauty and revelling in her amazing charisma that he had not quite heard her. His gaze held hers for a while in silence.
“Please come with me.” Kiara-Joy said, still with a smile and led the way to the waiting room.
There were two other occupants, a lady and a gentleman.
“Make yourself comfortable,” Kiara-Joy cheerfully said to the still dumbfounded Henrik.
“You are very beautiful,” Henrik finally managed to say.
“Thank you,” she replied shyly. “I’ll be at my desk if you need anything. Wish you the best in the interview.”
“How sweet. If an Angel wishes the best for me, I’m sure I will get nothing but the best.”
Kiara-Joy walked out and went back to her desk and to her throng of pending issues needing her urgent attention for the day.
Several hours later, the interview was over and Henrik hoped he would see her on his way out but he didn’t. He lingered at the reception for over an hour before she came back.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” Henrik said and laid down the newspaper he pretended to be reading.
“Is there something you need my help with?” Kiara-Joy asked, baffled.
“Does this Angel have a name?” Henrik asked looking straight into her eyes.
“Kiara-Joy,” she answered unenthusiastically.
“Wow, nice name. Well, just waited to know your name and to thank you for your well wishes. I don’t think I offered my thanks when you wished me well, did I?”
“There is no need for that. That’s my job, I’m paid to make people feel comfortable when they come here.”
“Even so, I feel you deserve to know you are very special. There aren’t many receptionists like you. Keep up the good work.”
“Thanks for your kind words. I’m glad I could help,” she said and turned to her computer to type.
“I will be on my way then. Enjoy a blessed day, Sweetie.”
“May yours be better!” she replied with a smile and a spark in her eyes.
Henrik was bought by that statement. He wanted to get to know more of her but did not want to rush things. He left without another word and thought of her the rest of the day. He imagined how it would feel like to touch her hands and her face. He wondered how it would feel like to kiss those ruby lips and see her beautiful eyes light up with desire for him.
He smiled to himself and promised he was going to make her his wife someday.
Henrik passed by the next day and the next and the next just to chitchat with her. Before he knew it, he was walking her home every day from work. They touched on various topics as they walked home which took about thirty minutes because she lived quite near the law school.
Then their relationship graduated to him visiting her at home and having dinners and outings with her every now and then. Thankfully, he was admitted into the Law School which made things much easier. He looked forward to seeing her after work every day so he could hear her voice and walk behind her when they got to a path that was too small for them to walk abreast.
Kiara-Joy was a beauty to watch. She had all the curves in the right places and perfect legs to top it. It had taken months of asking before Kiara-Joy allowed him to hold her hand as they walked home.
Then one day just before the last turn to her house he had asked her if she would want to be his girlfriend.
She had laughed and told him they were already friends so there was no need for him to ask that of her. Henrik knew she was pretending not to have understood what he meant so he told her he wanted more than just hold hands and walk home every day. He wanted to court her and marry her. He had pulled her towards him and kissed her after she agreed to his proposal.
They had both been lost in that kiss. They had been inseparable from that day onward. Kiara-Joy had a strict Dad and didn’t want to do anything to upset him so they played their cards well. They managed to spend a few hours together each day before parting to their various abodes and even then continued with chats, texts and video calls.
Henrik completed Law School and was fortunate to have been selected to Legal Fields for Internship. He had been employed after the year and had married Kiara-Joy shortly afterwards. He had never regretted marrying her. She was simply God-sent and had been a good wife by all standards. He knew for a fact that he wouldn’t be happier anywhere else. He loved her with his whole heart.
The icing on the cake was when Kiara-Joy gave him a daughter, Chelsca, who was an exact replica of him.
The movements of the hotel staff brought Henrik back to the present.
The darkness had almost dissipated and it was morning. He got up from the bench and walked to his room. Audrey was still sleeping. Henrik pulled the sheets to cover her bare thighs and went back to lie in the sofa. He slept for about an hour and Audrey was still sound asleep when he woke up.
He tapped her gently on the hands.
“It’s time to go and get ready, sleepyhead. We don’t want to be late for our meeting, do we?”
“Hmmmm. Is it morning already? I was just beginning to enjoy the sleep,” Audrey said, stretching and sitting up, revealing her bare thighs which could hardly be covered by the short negligee she was wearing.
Henrik hurriedly moved to the sofa and sat down heavily, rubbing his eyes to calm his nerves.
“Sorry, I took over your bed. It’s the kindest thing anybody ever did for me. You are such a perfect gentleman. Your wife is very lucky to have a man like you.”
“That’s ok. It’s my duty as your mentor to ensure that you are comfortable on the job. Glad I could help.”
“All the same, thank you. Not all mentors would do what you did. You are a blessing to mankind.”
“We better go get ready,” Henrik said and stepped into the bathroom, locking the door after him.
He stepped under the shower and was grateful he had held himself in check. He was glad to have passed this great temptation that had eaten him up the whole night. Henrik took a long bath and by the time he got out of the shower, Audrey was gone.
He asked for room service, and when it was brought he quickly had his breakfast and got dressed immediately afterwards. He moved to the reception of the hotel and waited for Audrey. As soon as she arrived, they left to meet the client with Henrik insisting that Audrey sat in the front of the car with the chauffeur.
The appointment went well.
The plaintiff was finally convinced to accept an out of court settlement after Henrik laid down the options and possible outcomes of a prolonged court case.
Afterwards, they had their lunch around 3.00 p.m. at the airport restaurant in silence.
Henrik went back to playing games on his phone whilst they waited for the 5.00 p.m. flight to Accra. Audrey felt ignored and resorted to chats with the few friends of her who were online.
They finally boarded their flight and took separate seats as usual.
Henrik opened his briefcase to jot down some thoughts and saw to his surprise a note from Audrey.
“Thank you, my guardian Angel for your kindness and thoughtfulness. There aren’t many like you in this world. Thanks for making me feel loved last night. Trust me when I say that I haven’t felt loved like this in a very long time. Audrey.”
He crumpled it and put it in his pocket after reading it with a smile and pulled out his jotter. He started making a list of things to do and interviews he needed to conduct for his next case.
The flight attendant asked all on board to fasten up their seat belts for landing as they had almost reached Accra.
Henrik quickly put back his jotter and closed his briefcase. He buckled up and waited. The plane touched down a few minutes afterwards and Henrik was grateful to be back on familiar territory.
He got home around 8.00p.m. that day after dropping off Audrey in her apartment.
When he got home, he kissed Kiara-joy with so much passion and intensity that she wondered what had happened to him.
“It seems like someone missed me as much as I did him!” Kiara-joy said playfully.
“More than you know, sweetheart. I was helpless without you. I feel like my love for you grows with each passing day. Oh, Kiara, I love you more each day. You are the only woman for me. I love you so much. You are my breath. There’s no me without you,” Henrik replied.
“Someone is being sentimental tonight. I hope your trip went well. Welcome home, my love. I missed you more.”
‘’That’s what you think, my dear. I missed you more than you missed me! There is no way you can miss me more than I did. It’s simply not possible. Now, come here and show me just how much you missed me.’’ he said as he pulled her towards him and gave her a long passionate kiss.
He held her by the hand and guided her to the bedroom, kissing her intermittently as they went. They ended up making love and took a shower together. They checked on Chelsca who was fast asleep afterwards and retired for the day. Henrik re-echoed how much he missed her every second he was away and made her promise that the next time he had to travel on a case she and their daughter would come along.
