EPISODE 8
Ledi stared at the wailing spirit and sighed.
“Listen, you bastard, I’ve had a very harrowing day, thanks to you, and I’m damn tired and drained. I need a shower, a drink and some food, in that order. And I’m not going to get it here in this lousy grave. I wanna go home!”
The spirit of Ebo Sintim wailed in a frenzied manner and blasted forward in fury, glaring at Ledi with hatred.
“Promise me you’re not going to interfere again!” he screamed angrily, wrathfully, dangerously. “If you persist, you’ll lose your life here, right now!”
Ledi looked at the spirit without fear.
“Has it occurred to you that maybe it wasn’t coincidence that anytime you try to kill Ebo I happen to come along? Have you wondered why, you vile spirit?”
There was confusion on the face of the spirit for a moment, and it sank lower into the grave.
“What are you talking about?” he hissed.
“It is appointed unto man once to die, Ebo,” Ledi said carefully. “Maybe, the God-appointed time for Kofi to die is not yet up, and you’re moving against the ways of God. Even if you kill me, and God wants Kofi to live, to repent, maybe, and be saved, then you still cannot kill him.”
“It doesn’t work like that!” Ebo shrieked furiously.
“It does, buddy,” Ledi said in a tried voice. “So if you wanna kill me, do it, you bastard, or let me get the hell out of here!”
The spirit wailed with frenzy, and then he was all over Ledi!
He grabbed Ledi Pedi and swung him against the muddy side of the grave, and then it dragged Ledi up and out of the grave, and slammed him rather painfully on a stone tomb!
The evil spirits swirled angrily around, nipping at Ledi, giving his body tiny pains.
Ebo Sintim swirled around, and finally landed in front of Ledi.
“It doesn’t work like that!” he screamed angrily. “Kofi killed me! And I was a Christian, a very good one!”
“Yep, you might have been, but your bitterness and anger is keeping you locked here, buddy,” Ledi said as he got to his feet slowly, and rubbed his muddied hands on his trousers. “Because you went sinful with revenge, you’re losing entrance to the Holy Place with God.”
The spirit wailed shrilly again and blew furiously across the graves, sending the leaves swirling furiously.
“Help me!” Ebo Sintim screamed. “Help me! I don’t know what to do!”
“I can help you expose Kofi, yes, if indeed he killed you,” Ledi said softly as he yawned. “The police will take him, and he will receive his just reward. That would stop Esi from marrying him, and you can have your peace. Deal?”
“You can do that?” Ebo wailed.
“I’ll try,” Ledi said. “I don’t promise anything, because I really don’t give a fart. But for your peace, and for mine, and for Esi’s safety, I’ll try! But I need to go home and take a shower, damn you!”
Before the spirit could say anything, the darkness was shattered by the twin beams of a car’s headlights. All the spirits groaned and moaned in dangerous drones, and their all turned their scary faces toward the car.
Ledi scowled, wondering what car was it and what it was doing there.
He was pinned in the car’s headlights as it came to a halt. There was silence for a long time, and Ledi held up his arm against the glare. Some minutes later he heard the doors slamming shut, and knew that the occupants of the car had come out.
A moment later four huge figures in long black coats came round the car and began moving toward Ledi Pedi. When they were near enough he noticed that apart from the long black coats, they were also wearing gloves and hats, and masks.
And they were holding guns.
Three were holding pistols, and the one in the lead was holding a sawed-off shotgun. All the guns were trained on Ledi Pedi.
“Who the fuck are you and what the fuck are you doing here at this time of the night?” the leader asked in a sinister voice.
Ledi sighed and spoke clearly.
“Listen, I don’t know what you guys are doing here, but right now, you better believe me that you’re in very mortal danger! You’re surrounded by some very vile spirits, and it will be in your best interests to turn round and leave quickly!”
There was a stunned silence, and then one of them giggled.
“Dude’s mad, Dragon,” another said. “Dosed out on some bad powder!”
As the others giggled, the leader moved forward and put the gun on Ledi’s chest.
“Stop shitting me, asshole!” he said dangerously. “There was a grave over there, some metres in that direction that had my coke, motherfucker! We went there and couldn’t find it! And here you are, all covered in dirt. Now I’ll give you one minute to give me my dope, or I’m gonna waste you where you stand!”
Ledi spoke softly.
“Listen, brother, I know you probably do not believe in spirits, and believe me, I didn’t either, until my eyes were opened.”
“Cut out that crap!” the drug lord shouted, pushing the gun into Ledi’s chest rather painfully. “Forty seconds then I waste you! You’re that new guy from Spanky’s outfit, ain’t ya?”
Ledi looked at him calmly.
He saw the spirits snarling, hissing and working up a frenzy, wanting to cause some havoc, and he concentrated wildly, keeping them away from manifesting.
“Listen, Dragon, or whatever you call yourself, I’m not joking here, okay? Now, by themselves they could not really hurt you, because they couldn’t cross over. But I’m here, dude, as an Unblind, and my presence here serves as a buffer that creates a sort of portal that can make them cross over from the land of the dead to real time. If you value your life –”
Ledi didn’t finish.
Dragon drew back the gun, reversed it, and crashed the butt into Ledi’s jaw, and he moaned with pain and dropped to his knees, dazed.
And because he was dazed he lost concentration on the spirits, and they began to wail with maddening glee.
“What’s that?” Dragon hissed, looked around him.
His three other accomplices were also looking around frantically.
“You better run!” Ledi said weakly as he felt the evil all around him. “Run, damn it! Get away now! They’re coming!”
The Dragon pointed his gun at Ledi, preparing to shoot him, and then, out of the darkness, he saw the rotten man standing next to Ledi!
“Yehowa!” Dragon muttered with sudden fright, and took a step back.
All around them the spirits, using Ledi’s weakness, began to appear physically!
Rotted, deadly and ugly forms were materializing out of the darkness like zombies, humming slowly with deadly intents!
The tombs broke in the terrible glare of the moon, and terrible-looking demons began to emerge!
Dragon felt a hand grabbing his legs as something slimy and terrible emerged from the ground, under him!
He pointed his gun down to shoot, and then he screamed with both horror and pain as a demon that looked like a crocodile reared up from the ground and clamped its teeth savagely into the Dragon’s belly, and then it ripped away with one thrust of its powerful jaws, tearing out the stomach of Dragon.
The three other goons were screaming and shooting at the evil around them. There was nothing Ledi could do now. He dived away into the darkness as bullets poured around him. He got to his feet, holding his aching jaw, and saw that Dragon was on his knees. The spirits had ripped off his hat and mask, and then Ledi recognized him.
Dragon’s real name was Matthew Shatty or Shantey, one of them. He had been on television recently in connection to a drug deal, and he was a wanted man.
His face was filled with horror as the humming spirits and demons surrounded him, and he looked at Ledi with sheer terror on his face.
“Please,” he screamed. “Please, help me, please!”
“Can’t help you now, buddy,” Ledi said, and turned away just as a red demon that looked fat and bloated with a long snout sank its teeth into the Dragon’s face and began to chew it up.
Something evil slithered around Ledi. It was long and scaly like an anaconda, but it had about ten yellow eyes on its head, arranged in a circle. It opened its mouth wide, and its mouth was shaped exactly like a snakes, and then it just pounced on one of the armed robbers and bit his head off.
The drug peddler sank to his knees as blood pumped out of his headless neck!
The other two were now standing back to back, screaming insanely with horror, as the spirits, now in a circle around the humans, moved forward slowly with maddened wrath.
And then Ledi saw the four shiny whitish and silvery cloud-like things suddenly approaching, crackling with horrible energy, changing shapes and making furious droning sounds! There were horrible dark shapes within them, howling with vindictive energy!
Death Clouds!
They were coming for the souls of the four men!
“You bastards!” Ledi whispered, horrified and suddenly sad. “I told you to run, darn it!”
Ledi turned his back on the two remaining humans and began to run, unable to watch their horrible deaths! He left the cemetery behind, and even then he heard their screams of horror, and his intestines knotted with sudden, unbidden pity for them!
If he had had his gifts, if he had been glowing, the spirits would not have dared make an appearance, and those four humans could have been saved!
He felt so sad! He could have saved them, at least, and given them a shot at repentance.
A long time later he gained the road.
And then he saw the man…or thing!
He was a tall, slender shape like a man, but he was totally ash. It was limping along. Its eyes were bulging and yellow, its nose long and pointed, and its mouth was a huge black cavity opened wide like a permanent ‘O’.
It had three arms, and in one of them was a black scythe.
Ledi’s heart thudded with sudden fear as he saw the demon. He knew this demon could kill, and would kill him if it met him. Ledi fell flat suddenly and rolled into a gutter at the side of the road.
The slender demon came along slowly, and when it reached where Ledi was lying it stopped, and them it began to sniff the air, its yellow eyes suddenly darting around in frenzy!
“Oh, no, no, no!” Ledi whispered, shaking with acute fear!
The demon groaned, smelling the defenceless human. It suddenly uttered a ground-shaking, ear-splitting wail, and its scythe whistle through the air menacingly!
It began to shuffle toward the gutter, moaning harshly with intense hatred!
And then it reached the gutter, looked in, and saw the terrified Ledi.
It moaned long and deep, and then it raised its scythe!
“You evil bitch!” Ledi whispered with resignation, sure that death was knocking on his door. “Do your worst!”
And that was when the wailing entity appeared!
The spirit of Ebo Sintim blasted out of the bushes, wailing shrilly! The demon turned with alarm, and saw Ebo coming for him! It beat a hasty retreat as Ebo faced it, all the while wailing!
The demon screamed once, and then it began to howl as it moved off slowly.
Ledi Pedi let out his breath slowly. He came out of the gutter and sat for a while, allowing the shivers to leave his body.
“You better get moving, Mr. Pedi,” said the wailing entity. “They’re all around. Today is a bad day to be out at this time. You better get moving!”
Ledi nodded and got up.
He ran to where his car had hit the street light. He got in and hit the ignition. The engine caught, sputtered for a moment, and then it held.
Ledi reversed off the pole, swung the car toward home and drove carefully.
The radiator was shot to hell and if he didn’t take time the car would overheat.
He drove along with his eyes on the temperature, but it held, maybe because of the cold night.
There was a bright sheen in the car as the spirit of Ebo sank into his back seat.
“Watcha you?” Ledi asked.
“Just seeing you home, mister,” Ebo said softly. “Don’t wanna lose you. I want you to reach home in one peace so that you can help me as you promised.”
“Didn’t promise nothing!” Ledi said. “Said I would help, but I didn’t make a promise!”
“Fair enough,” Ebo said. “I’ll see you home, and then tomorrow you will start with the helping me stuff. It is time we paid a nice visit to Mr. Kofi, the man who killed me and wants to marry my girlfriend, don’t you think?”
