EPISODE 1
Nana Ekua drove through the streets of Accra like an insane person, not knowing where she was headed or what she was doing out there on the streets at that time of night.
Tears streamed down her beautiful face as she drove along.
She had been hurt. She had been badly hurt.
In fact, she had never felt this betrayed, this grassed.
She put a hand across her heart as if that would stop the pain.
She closed her eyes very tightly as if that would stop the flow of tears which were partially blinding her now. Nana Ekua drove on giving little attention to traffic regulations. She drove so carelessly that a driver coming from behind her had to wave a warning finger at her when he overtook her.
Nana Ekua paid no heed. At the moment, nothing mattered. All she wanted was for her to get far away, very far away from the source of her pain.
She looked up into the calm sky and wondered if there was really a God up there. Her tears fell faster.
“What did I do to deserve this? Why must I be humiliated like this?” she asked herself for the umpteenth time.
Her tears fell in heavy torrents and this blinded her completely. She pulled over and sat in the car for a long time crying her heart out. When she felt calmer, she started the car and drove on with no specific destination in mind.
In her anguish, Nana Ekua sought for answers. In her pain, she challenged the existence of a God who cared.
Without a doubt, in her pain life didn’t matter anymore.
Life, for her, had been rosy up until now. She was the first child of her parents. Her childhood had been filled with total bliss. She had three lovely sisters. Her family had been blessed and they had enjoyed a very happy family life by all standards. She was brought up well and educated as much as was necessary.
She started off as a Mechanical Engineer and so far, she had been very successful. And she now had a consultancy firm of her own and she also owned a fleet of small businesses ranging from supermarkets, boutiques and hairdressing salons.
Life had gone by with no hitches except her love life which had been so disappointing and boring that she had given up on love and resigned herself to the unflattering life of a spinster.
There had been three relationships in her life. One had lasted for three months when she found out the pharmacist she was dating was married. She had chanced on his wedding ring in the glove compartment of his car. She had simply walked away without a second thought. Dating married men was not a thing for her.
She upheld fidelity in every sense of the word.
The second relationship had lasted for six months. They both agreed to call it off when it became clear they were incompatible.
The third and final relationship had lapsed for two years.
Nana Ekua had always felt something was missing in those relationships.
The relationship with Bernard, the one that had survived two years, had been okay and comfortable.
Bernard was all a woman would want for a man; handsome, caring, kind, good-mannered and a complete set of positive attributes.
Everything went well between them and after two years of courtship, Bernard had proposed. Nana Ekua had been confused because she was not sure of what she actually felt for Bernard. She, however, agreed to marry him with the conviction that she would grow to love him completely and with fervour as they grew in the relationship.
Preparations for the big event got underway immediately.
Nana Ekua knew Bernard was not too sure of her feelings for him. Time and again Bernard had asked her if she really wanted to be with him. This always resulted, more often than not, in a quarrel between them which ended up in the silent treatment of each other for days and sometimes weeks.
Two weeks to their wedding, Nana Ekua went to Bernard’s house to clean up, since she was moving in right after the honeymoon. While cleaning the bedroom she came across a letter from Bernard’s former lover who was now based in the U.S. stating simply that she was still in love with him and was coming back to Ghana in the next couple of days to stop his supposed marriage madness.
Nana Ekua had been surprised Bernard concealed something like that from her. Granted, they never talked about their past relationships but that was because they both thought it was not important, but if there was something like this, he could have at least told her about this particular ex-girlfriend who was obviously still in love with him.
Nana Ekua had thought of confronting him about it but decided against it. She watched Bernard closely afterwards and he began going back on his promises and commitments to her with one excuse after the other. Bernard’s countenance changed and he was most of the time absentminded.
Then, finally the bomb had dropped!
Four days to their wedding Nana Ekua found Bernard in bed with his ex-lover. They had been so engrossed in their passion for each other that they had not heard her enter the house let alone the bedroom. Nana Ekua had been so shocked she could not even speak. She managed to calm her rage and asked Bernard for explanations.
“What’s the meaning of this, Bernard?” she had asked in a shattered voice.
Bernard jumped up from his thrusting position, startled at the voice he heard. He threw the bed sheet around him and walked up to Nana Ekua who still had her right hand on the doorknob. She looked at him for some time without saying anything. Realizing that she had made a mistake by drawing his attention, she turned to leave.
“Forget it, that was a dumb question,” she said.
“Ekua, please don’t go. It’s not as bad as it looks. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. I’m very sorry.” Bernard implored.
Nana Ekua looked at him as if she did not comprehend what he was saying.
Bernard’s ex-lover who was lying naked on the bed looked from Bernard to the stranger who seemed to have a lot of influence on him.
“Excuse me, Bernie, who is this lady who thinks she can just come in here to crash our party?” she asked.
Bernard looked from Nana Ekua to Alberta without uttering a word.
“I think I deserve some explanation here. Who the hell is she and what is she doing here at this time of night anyway?” Alberta asked.
“Will you just shut up, woman?” Bernard said, “I owe you no explanations.”
Nana Ekua looked from Bernard to the woman who did not even try to cover her nakedness.
“I think I deserve some explanation, Bernard. What is the meaning of this?” Nana Ekua asked.
Bernard scratched his chin awkwardly and looked miserably at Nana Ekua.
“Em…” he stammered. “Nana Ekua, this is Alberta; Alberta, this is Nana Ekua, my fiancĂ©e,” he said at last.
“Oh, this is the lady who can’t satisfy you in bed!” Alberta said, got up from the bed and walked in her naked state to
Nana Ekua with an extended hand, “Pleased to meet you Miss good-for-nothing fiancĂ©e?”
Nana Ekua felt unbridled fury rising up inside her. She fought hard and calmed herself and her shaking fists. She felt like wiping the smug smile off Alberta’s face. Nana Ekua clenched her left arm to calm the urge. She reasoned that there was no wisdom in fighting with fools and much so, over a man who could descend to such sordid lows.
“Oh, is that what he told you?” Nana Ekua asked with sarcasm.
“No, he didn’t have to say anything. Everything is clear as daylight. I think you saw it yourself, didn’t you? No man satisfied sexually can make love to another woman the way Bernie just did with me. To tell you the truth, I’ve not had it like that in a long time,” Alberta said, smiling.
Bernard tried to explain himself but words failed him.
Nana Ekua turned and walked out of the door, losing interest completely in the whole thing.
Bernard pulled up his pants in a frenzy.
Alberta tried her best to get him to stay with her. She wound her arms around him and pressed her breasts against his bare back.
He shoved her off and stormed out of the room, zipping his pants.
“Ekua, please don’t go. Please I’m sorry. I love you!”
“Oh, is that supposed to make me feel better? You love me?” she asked bitterly.
“I know this is not the right time to be saying this but I do love you with all my heart,” Bernard said, trying to convince her.
Nana was losing her patience with Bernard’s utterances.
“I guess I should be thankful for that, right?” she asked bitterly.
“No, I am not saying that. I know I have committed the worst offence against you but the fact remains that I still love you. Nana Ekua, I love you with everything I hold dear,”
Bernard explained further.
“Yes, I can see that very clearly. I see just how much you love me,” Nana Ekua said with sarcasm.
“Ekua, please don’t talk like that. I love you and that is the truth,”
“Is this your definition of love?” Nana Ekua asked.
“I’m sorry for what I have done but believe me when I tell you I love you because I really do,” Bernard said sadly.
“You love me indeed! I’m sorry Bernard, but I can’t live like this. Obviously, you still want her.
You can’t tell me you love me and do this to me on the verge of the most important day of my life, our wedding!! No. I don’t think you know what you are talking about,” Nana Ekua continued.
“I know I love you, Nana Ekua. And I also know that I wouldn’t be the same without you. I …”
“Oh, cut out the ‘I love you’ bullshit, would you? How would you feel if you had seen me in bed with another man and somehow, I managed to disentangle myself from him and tell you I love you very much, Bernard, huh? How would you feel? Tell me, how will that feel?” Nana Ekua said as her pain threatened to assail her.
Bernard couldn’t utter a single word. Somehow, he couldn’t find the words to explain himself without causing any more heartache to her.
“Won’t you answer me? Let me make it easy for you, would you believe me or not if our positions had been reversed?” Nana Ekua continued.
“I know I have hurt you, Ekua. I know I have betrayed you in the worst way possible. Oh, I also know I have committed the most unforgivable of blunders. I am truly sorry. I know how you feel right now. My love, I am deeply sorry for causing you this much pain,” Bernard said, looking genuinely contrite.
Nana Ekua looked through the open door and saw Alberta lying naked on the bed enjoying the confusion she’d created.
“How long has this been going on, Bernard? And when were you planning to tell me? At least, I have the right to know,” Nana Ekua said.
“Look, all I am saying is, I’m sorry. It isn’t like she means anything to me. It’s not like there is anything serious going on between us. I didn’t mean to hurt you, Ekua, I love you too much to hurt you like this. But believe me when I tell you I did that for your love,” Bernard explained.
“My love? Your love for me made you make love to another woman?” Nana Ekua asked, confused.
“You won’t understand. I love you, believe me, I …”
“Oh, I believe you all right. You call me to tell me you had to work late and so wouldn’t make it to the counselling session. I guess this was the extra work you were talking about. And if I hadn’t shown up here, I bet you would still be doing overtime. I have to believe that what happened here with you and your Alberta was an accident and the work of the devil, to be precise.
You have a lousy way of showing your love, Bernard Krampah. You sure have a lousy way of showing your love. Look me in the eye and tell me that you didn’t plan this. Tell me you didn’t lie to be with this woman. Tell me you didn’t enjoy making love to her. And you did all that for my love?” Nana Ekua interrupted.
Bernard was stumped for a moment.
He looked into the beautiful eyes of Nana Ekua and opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out.
Nana Ekua descended the stairs to the compound in frenzied pain.
Bernard grabbed her violently by the wrist from behind and they both stumbled and fell. Bernard, still maintaining his grip on her, crawled to her and tried to straighten Nana Ekua’s left foot which was twisted at an awkward angle.
“Don’t touch me, Bernard! Let me go, damn you!” Nana Ekua retorted.
