EPISODE 4
“Looking for me?” he asked teasingly.
“Of course not,” Nana Ekua lied and sighed with relief that he was not angry with her.
“Are you sure you were not looking for me?” Kobby taunted.
“I wasn’t looking for you, period,” Nana Ekua said and stepped into her room expecting him to follow but he didn’t.
After a while she went to lie down very angry at how Kobby got to her so much. She tried to push him out of her mind but couldn’t. She got up, looked for her phone and made a few calls. Nana Ekua felt calmer and in control after the calls and went to bed. She fell asleep almost immediately.
A persistent knock on her door woke her. She sat up, looked around her and realized it was very dark. She got up and walked to the window. It was night time. She looked for her watch to look at the time but she did not remember where she put it.
The knock came again.
She walked to the door and opened it. Kobby stood in the doorway.
“What time is it?” Nana Ekua asked sleepily.
“It’s time to wake up from your beautiful sleep, Princess Coleman.”
“Oh, get serious, would you?” Nana Ekua replied.
“It’s past ten. I didn’t see you at dinner. I enquired if you had asked for room service but found out that you had done no such thing. Then I took a long walk and when I came back I realized your lights were still out and with all that shouting this afternoon I got worried and decided to check on you,” Kobby explained.
“I’m fine, actually. I didn’t know I’ve slept for that long,”
“Can I come in?” he asked.
Nana Ekua looked back to survey her room and wanted to say no but Kobby spoke again.
“Look, let’s go down to the eatery and see if we can get you something to eat.” Kobby offered.
Nana Ekua looked at her dress and began to straighten it with her palms.
“Don’t worry, you look good in anything,” Kobby said encouragingly.
Nana Ekua rushed inside for her purse and followed him down the stairs to the restaurant.
He drew a chair for her and vanished into the kitchen.
A few minutes later, he came back with a tray full of assorted food and set it before her. He made her eat as much as was possible between jokes and compliments.
“I know it’s late but the moon is up. Do you think we can take a walk together down the seashore? The sea is an awesome sight in the moonlight.” Kobby suggested.
“I guess I have no choice, do I?” Nana Ekua said.
“You always have a choice. ” Kobby answered.
Nana Ekua looked at him for a long time without saying anything.
“I don’t bite, you know? You can trust me completely,” Kobby added when he saw how uncomfortable Nana Ekua seemed to be.
“I didn’t say I didn’t trust you,” she shot back.
“Oh, good. That means there’s no problem about that then. Let’s get going.”
They walked down to the most distant part of the beach.
They talked about a lot of things.
It was as if they had known each other for years. Theirs was a natural fusion of delight and happiness that shocked both of them, and when they kissed it was a natural explosion of love that bound their hearts for eternity.
Her relationship with Kobby started in earnest from there.
Kobby swept her off her feet and broke down all her walls and fears with the speed of lightning. She, in turn, had fallen deeply in love with him.
***
Eight months into their relationship, Kobby and Nana Ekua decided to get hitched. That was when all her troubles started.
Her in-laws did not want to have anything to do with her. They called her names, issued threats and did unthinkable things just to break them up. With love and determination, they were able to come above all the odds and finally they were married.
It was a simple but impressive ceremony. Nana Ekua loved every minute of it because she was marrying the man she loved. She forgot about the problems they had encountered on their way to being united.
Just as she was relaxing and feeling on top of the world at the reception, her mother-in-law walked to her when she was alone and told her things that tore up her soul.
She had been so happy that day that she had tried to embrace her mother-in-law as she walked to her but was taken aback by her reaction.
Her mother-in-law pushed her away with all her strength, wearing her hatred for her as a mask.
The smile on Nana Ekua’s face vanished immediately. She knew then that her mother-in-law had still not accepted her. Her words that day shocked Ekua to the bone.
“Listen, young lady, I have just a few things to say to you so listen real good,” she paused and looked round to make sure no one was close enough, especially her son.
“Honestly, I don’t know what my son sees in you that has made him so stubborn but don’t think marrying him today is the end of everything. You have just declared war by marrying my son and war you’re going get from today onwards. I would single-handedly make sure you don’t stay married for long. So if I were you I wouldn’t be smiling and feeling so good about myself. The worst is yet to …”
“Oh, it’s good to see you two have settled your differences,” Kobby interrupted her as he appeared suddenly from behind. “Mom, thanks so much for accepting Ekua. She is my lifeblood, you know .” Kobby said and planted a kiss on his mother’s cheek.
He took his wife by the hand and kissed her passionately. “I love you, Nana Ekua. I will be so incomplete without you,” he said and wound his right arm around her waist.
“Mother, I know you would like her, she is a wonderful person. Just try and get to know her better and you’ll see that you’ve been wrong about her.” he said convincingly.
“Yes. I agree I have been very wrong about her.” her mother-in-law said sarcastically and opened her arms to Ekua,
“Come on, my daughter, come and give me a big hug. Welcome to the family, my dearest.”
Life after that was full of bliss except for the occasional unexpected visits of Kobby’s mother and sister to their marital home, which always left her depressed.
The love she had for her husband and the love she got from him kept her sane through all the troubled times. What worried her most was the fact that when Kobby was home, her in-laws treated her like a queen. But the moment he was out of the house they said things that no human had the right to tell another and this made it impossible for her to make her husband see and understand her dilemma.
To make matters worse, she had not been able to conceive after two years of marriage. Not that it was a problem to Kobby but the immense pressure from his family began to take a toll on him, but he still loved and cherished her. They saw specialists about her inability to conceive and the story was one and the same, “There is nothing wrong with both of you; keep trying.”
One day she came home late to see her husband seated calmly in the living-room watching TV.
“Hi, honey!” Nana Ekua said and tried to kiss him.
“Don’t honey me, you ungrateful being. Is this what I get for loving you?” Kobby said furiously.
“What’s with you? Why are you acting like that?” Nana Ekua asked, confused.
“I should take it that you are from work?” Kobby asked sarcastically.
“Oh, are you that way because I came home late? I left a message with your secretary when I couldn’t reach you. Obviously, you didn’t get the message. I’m sorry.”
“Yes, you should be sorry. I didn’t know you could do a thing like that. I thought you and I were honest with each other. And I thought we were inseparable. Obviously I have been living in a fool’s paradise!”
“What has come over you, Kobby? What are you talking about?”
“Well, you want to play dumb with me huh, okay let me refresh your memory. Your lover called me today and do you know what he said?”
“My lover? Are you out of your mind?” Nana Ekua interrupted him.
“Yes, I am out of my mind. Any sane person would have read between the lines. Your lateness from work, your attitude when you come home after making me wait for you confirms everything. You are having an affair with another man, Nana Ekua and don’t deny it. Your lover told me your plans and he also told me you two have plans of getting married. For how long, Nana Ekua, for how long has this been going on?”
“Look, I think there’s been a mistake or misunderstanding somewhere. I am doing no such thing as you are suggesting. I have never been unfaithful and I will never be!”
“Cut all that crap, Ekua. I now understand why for over a month you and I have not made love. You were getting f**ked somewhere else. Jesus Christ, Ekua, you could have just told me I wasn’t good for you.”
“Now I think I have had enough of your nonsense. What is all this about? You get a stupid call and you believe anything anybody tells you about me. I won’t stand here to listen to your insults. How do you know that is not yet another scheme by your family to break us up? They did worse things than this in the past so what would stop them now? I don’t think I have the heart to listen to all these hurtful words from you. You can’t make accusations like that until you have facts. Now, this lover of mine, what did he say his name was?”
“Are you asking me? You should tell me. And leave my family out of this. All that bitterness and pain are a thing of the past. They have done their part and so don’t try to hide behind them.”
“Wake up, Kobby Amoah, wake up and see what’s going on around you. I am no pretender. If I fall out of love with you I would tell you to the face. And don’t tell me I’m with you for the money. Money is not a problem to me. Why do you think I would do a thing like that? Thank you for believing such blatant lies about me.
Thank you very much. I now know where I stand where your love and trust are concerned. I would never believe anything like that about you, never, because I love and trust you. Now, if you don’t mind, it’s been a long day and I don’t need this.” Nana Ekua said and entered the bedroom.
For weeks things were strained between them. Then they resolved their issues and moved on, but the painful underlying tension was still there.
Three months later, Nana Ekua received a call. The caller was very blunt.
“Woman, if you value your husband’s life and would like to see him alive come to Hotel de Bernice at 7.00 p.m. prompt and bring with you an amount of fifty thousand cedis. I must warn you not to bring the police or anyone otherwise your husband would pay with his life.“
She scribbled the address of the hotel in frenzy. The caller hung up before she could ask further questions.
She called her husband’s workplace; he was nowhere to be found. She called his cell phone, it was off. She called her in-laws, they had not seen him. Nana Ekua called the house, he hadn’t been there. She looked at her watch; it was getting to three o’clock. She rushed to the bank and cashed the said amount.
Nana Ekua arrived at the hotel ten minutes earlier. She made enquiries at the reception and run up the stairs to the room indicated in anxiety. She found the room, which was unlocked, and entered. There was a note on a low bedside table which read “Will be with you shortly!“
After waiting for about an hour, Nana Ekua became worried. There was no sign of the caller or her husband. She looked at the note again, to make sure she hasn’t missed anything. She checked her mobile phone to make sure it was on in case she had to be reached. Nana Ekua ran to the reception and tried to get the name of the occupant of room 14, the designated room number and was not successful When the waiting became too much for her, she decided to go home and see if she could find her husband or if the caller had left any note or messages for her.
When she got home she noticed the lights in the house were still off. She drove through the huge gates and parked in front of the main house with a heavy heart. She climbed the stairs to the main house two at a time and tried to open the door with her key. The door would not open. She turned the handle and realized it wasn’t locked. Her anxiety soared to new heights. She stepped inside cautiously and just then the lights came on. She saw Kobby still in his work clothes, standing in the living-room.
Nana Ekua, out of relief, ran to him, “Oh, thank God you are all right! I was so worried about you,” Nana Ekua said, trying to hug him.
“Take your filthy hands off me, you damn cheater!” he screamed at her.
Nana Ekua stopped in total shock.
“What did you just call me?” she asked, hoping she had not heard correctly.
“You heard me. You are having an affair and you think you can come in here any time you feel like it and touch me with those same filthy hands you touched him with a few minutes ago? God, you are disgusting. And I thought you loved me!”
Nana Ekua stared at her husband in total disbelief.
“What has come over you again, Kobby?” she asked, confused.
“Don’t play games with me Ekua. You know exactly what has come over me. I defied my family and friends to marry you because I love you and I believed the feeling was mutual. Then I find out that all these years you’ve been f**king around with other guys and when I react you ask me what has come over me?” he said bitterly.
Nana Ekua looked at her husband with her shattered heart on her face.
“Are you accusing me of infidelity again, Kobby?” she asked, very hurt.
“Are you not coming from your lover after spending some time with him at Hotel de Bernice?” he asked.
“Yes, I am coming from Hotel de Bernice but at least give me a chance to explain what I went there to do… I had a call…”
“Cut the act Nana, I know exactly why you went to that hotel. Your lover called me again and told me your plans ahead of schedule so I went there to make sure I hadn’t been wrong after all. You disappointed me by showing up exactly as planned and after you had the time of your life with your lover you come in here to touch me as if nothing had happened?
You can never really know a person, can you? The fool I had been. I walk around with a big head because I believed I had the most valuable jewel on earth. I walked around with pride knowing I had a saint for a wife not knowing you were nothing but a slut. You are disgusting and I am very disappointed. I think you know what you have to do. Infidelity is something I cannot tolerate so just get the hell out of my life, and go be with your lover.” Kobby stated and sunk into the sofa.
Tears raced down Nana Ekua’s face. She couldn’t believe Kobby, the man she loved unconditionally, could say things like that to her. What was happening to them? What had she done to deserve such treatment from the love of her life? And now, he was asking her to leave his home without bothering to hear her side of the story? God this hurt.
She tried to defend herself but her bitter husband wouldn’t have any of it, refusing bluntly to listen to her pleas and explanations.
“Honey, I don’t know what you’ve heard to make you this way but I tell you now that I have never, and I repeat, never been unfaithful to you. I love you that much. I had a call that you were in some kind of trouble that was why I went to that hotel. Really, I went there because I was worried…”
The ring of the phone in the living room interrupted her. Her husband rushed to answer the phone.
“Yes,” he shouted into the mouthpiece.
“Well, I take it that you now believe what I have been telling you all this while. She got home not long ago, right? We had a magical time together. We made love and in fact we are trying to start a family. She could be carrying my child, so be careful with her. Don’t be fooled, Mister, your wife loves me very much and someday I know she would leave you for me.
You know what, tell her to bring back the fifty thousand I told her about tomorrow. I guess we were both so engrossed in the passion we shared that we forgot why she actually came to the hotel. I know she would try to deny this but it is understandable, she doesn’t want to hurt you.
And I know you would be wondering why I am telling you all this. The answer is simple. I am sick and tired of being the other man in her life. I want you to set her free so that we can live our love. And I bet the money is in her car right now. That can be your proof. Good night Mr. Amoah.” the caller said and hung up.
