EPISODE 17
Nana Ekua looked through the window for the seventh time and there was still no sign of Kobby.
She looked at her watch. Kobby was an hour late. This was so unlike him. Nana Ekua couldn’t comprehend why he was that late and had not even bothered to call.
She wondered if he had changed his mind about divorcing her. That would be good news but she would have known by now if he wasn’t coming. Nana Ekua’s mind went round in circles trying to find a reasonable explanation for Kobby’s lateness. She walked to the dinning table and checked for the millionth time if everything was in place.
She then entered her son’s room. The boy was asleep and Mansa was nearby in case he woke up. The little boy had given her a scare a short while ago with a fever but he was all right now, thanks to Dr. Styles. She sat by the side of the bed gently and adjusted his head which had been tilted at an awkward angle. The doorbell chimed.
“I’ll get it,” Nana Ekua said as she stormed out of the room.
She straightened her dress with her palms and walked to the door. She put her hand on the knob but her hand shook so she withdrew it. Nervously, she rubbed her palms together in an attempt to calm her shaking hands. She tried the second time but failed to open the door. The chime came again and she opened the door without a second thought.
Kobby stood in the doorway with sadness in his eyes. He was casually dressed but he looked a little bit tensed. One long look at him and Nana Ekua could tell it took a lot of courage for him to come to see her. She stepped aside to let him in.
He entered and looked around the room. Kobby thought she looked more beautiful than ever even in the casual outfit she was in.
“Please make yourself comfortable,” Nana Ekua said when she realised he was still standing.
“Thank you,” he said and sat down.
“What can I offer you?” Nana Ekua asked, still observing him. He looked a little worn out. There were dark circles around his eyes, which suggested he had not been sleeping much. Nana Ekua wondered what could be weighing on him that heavily.
“Thanks for asking but I don’t plan to stay for long so don’t bother. There is something I need to ask of you,” Kobby said.
Nana Ekua’s heart missed a beat. She had been right. He wanted a divorce. Nana Ekua’s heart started crying in pain.
“Well, I took the liberty to prepare something when you talked about dinner so I was wondering if you would want a drink before dinner. That’s what you used to do, right?” Nana Ekua explained.
“Okay, I will stay for dinner but I won’t take any drink,” Kobby replied.
“Well, let’s go and eat then. I prefer we talk after dinner. I am starved,” Nana Ekua suggested trying to buy out some time.
Kobby didn’t feel hungry. He had a lot on his mind. He wanted to go through whatever he had to say. In truth, he had gone over it several times on his way. He wanted to get it over and done with but he had to be sensitive to her needs too. She said she was hungry and it was not like he was in a hurry.
“Okay,” he said and got to his feet.
Nana Ekua led him to the dinning room and served dinner immediately. They ate virtually in silence. They were both very uncomfortable.
After dinner Nana Ekua suggested they go into the garden. It was a beautiful night and looking at the tension between them they could use the fresh air.
They stepped out into the garden and Kobby fell in love with it immediately. Everything in the garden was simply perfect. One could tell how much work had been put in to turn the place into that beautiful garden.
There were two summer huts in the garden, which had red dim bulbs. Nana Ekua plucked one of the red roses and inhaled its fragrance deeply as she led him to one of the huts. She sat down expecting him to sit facing her but he didn’t. He remained standing for a while running his hands through his hair.
Nana Ekua got up and walked to him. She could see that whatever he had to say must be very unpleasant otherwise he wouldn’t be in this difficulty. She stood facing him.
“If you are not comfortable here, we can pick another venue for the discussion or whatever you call it,” Nana Ekua said sadly.
“No, it’s all right. It just that I don’t know where to start,” Kobby explained.
“Why don’t you start from the beginning?” Nana Ekua suggested.
“Come back home, Ekua. Come back to me. I need you.” Kobby said in a rush.
Nana Ekua didn’t believe she heard right. Was he asking her back into his life or he had said otherwise.
“What did you say?” she whispered.
“I want you back, Ekua. I want us to go back to how it was between us. Please, my love, I want you to be my wife again. My life is nothing without you!” he said.
“Why? Why do you want me back?” Nana Ekua asked, confused.
“I know I have caused you so many tears in the past. But I want you to consider the fact that I am human and bound to make mistakes. Like any human, my stupid jealousies and insecurities took the best of me and I completely lost my mind. That’s why I have come to tell you I am sorry for the things I did, for the tears I made you shed, and the words I said to hurt you so much.
I wasn’t thinking straight when all that was happening. I lost my sense of good judgment due to my extreme jealousy. But I know deep down in my heart that you wouldn’t do a thing like that. I know I am at fault and I am here to ask you to forgive me for the pain I have caused you. I love you and that will never change.
My love, I stand here and ask for your forgiveness and another chance to make it up to you. I need you, Ekua, I need you more than you know. Without you, I can’t go on. My life is so incomplete without you. Please forgive me and open up your heart to me again,” Kobby poured his heart out.
Nana Ekua stood there and hot tears fell down her cheeks in torrents. She was happy and sad. She was happy that he believed in her and trusted her to such wonderful lengths. However, she was sad because she had been mean to him. She had kept his son from him and she knew the storm wasn’t over yet. Would he believe her when she told him Junior was his son?
“Nana Ekua, I promise I would do anything to make it up to you so please tell me anything you want me to do. I know what we shared is still there. I know all is not lost yet. We can come together rekindle that love and make our marriage work. Please let’s give it a try. Let’s go back and pick up from where we left off. I am nothing without you,” Kobby went on, trying so hard to convince his wife to go back home with him.
“I love you too Kobby, and I always will, but…”
“Madam! Madam!” Mansa’s frantic shouts interrupted her.
“Madam, it’s Junior. I think he’s going to faint,” Mansa said worriedly.
Nana Ekua took the boy from her before she finished her statement. The boy’s temperature was very high and she needed to do something immediately. She ordered Mansa to go and get her a bucket of cold water.
Kobby took the boy from her and ripped off his clothes. His temperature was indeed too high. Kobby remembered what his great-grandfather had said they did in the days when orthodox medicine wasn’t popular. He looked round him and saw that the paths through the garden had been cemented and that’s just what he needed. And then he placed the naked boy on the bare floor and ripped off his shirt to fan him. He fanned him with all his strength.
Mansa came back with the bucket of water.
Kobby picked up the boy and realised his temperature had gone down drastically. The boy started crying.
“Is he alright?” Nana Ekua asked, not knowing what he was doing.
“I think so,” Kobby answered. His temperature had gone down. He held him for a while then he gave him to Nana Ekua.
“I think his temperature went up too high. It’s good you keep it down and please see a doctor if it persists,” Kobby said, looking at Mansa.
“Give him to his mother to feed him. Maybe that’s all he needs. I think the worst is over,” Kobby said turning to Nana Ekua.
Nana Ekua and Mansa exchanged worried looks.
Kobby looked at Nana Ekua who was acting as though he had not heard him. “Nana Ekua, I think it would be best for the boy if he’s breastfed. My great-grandfather told me that breast milk perform wonders,” he repeated.
“Kobby, if there was anyone to breastfeed him, it would have to be me. Junior is my son, our son,” Nana Ekua said slowly.
Kobby looked at Nana Ekua and the house-help, who was walking away in incomprehension.
“You mean that child is yours?” Kobby asked.
“He is ours, Kobby. He is your son,” Nana Ekua tried to convince him.
“No, this can’t be. I can’t possibly be…”
“Yes, you are, Kobby. I can even swear to that fact. It’s a long story but I didn’t tell you because I was scared it would create doubts in your mind about my fidelity to you. Just look at him, take a long look at him and you would know that he is your flesh and blood. He is your son. I named him Kobby Amoah Jnr, just as you wanted for your sons.
You remember the night the doctor left a message on your answering machine? I was in labour and there were some complications. I was told I was calling out for you so she thought it was wise to notify you. She wanted me to tell you about the baby. She had always wanted me to tell you but I was scared. I was scared I would lose you,” Nana Ekua said earnestly.
Kobby looked at the boy for a long time. It was true he resembled him but could he believe her? And why wasn’t he told? Deep down in his heart he knew Nana Ekua couldn’t make up something like that since there were ways of finding out the truth. Why the hell didn’t anyone tell him?
“Why would you keep something that important from me? Do you hate me that much? Ekua, why?” Kobby asked very furious.
Nana Ekua was speechless.
He took a long look at mother and son and stormed out of the house.
