FINAL EPISODE
Kobby was still playing with his son when Nana Ekua finished dressing up.
The three of them had taken a long bath together.
“It’s time for the boy to go to bed. You can’t keep him up all day. It’s not good for him,” Nana Ekua said for the fifth time.
“Don’t mind her, she’s just jealous. There is so much I have missed and I am not going to miss any more. I’m going to be by your side till you fall asleep today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow and the next and the next…” he said to the boy.
The ding of the doorbell stopped Nana Ekua from responding to his statement.
“That must be your guests, why don’t you go and attend to them while I play with the son you stole from me? You wanted him all to yourself so you kept him from me.” Kobby said, mockingly. “Tomorrow, the boys are going out on a shopping spree and you are not invited.”
Nana Ekua looked at him without knowing what to say. “Are you coming?” she managed to say.
“Not when my son is still wild awake. Have fun, my love. I’m having the time of my life. Hey, beware of that Samba character. He has always had a crush on you,” Kobby replied without looking at her.
Nana Ekua walked out of the bedroom and met her guests–Samba and Renee– in her living room.
“What is that witch doing here?” Renee asked when her eyes fell on Nana Ekua.
“Look, I have had just about enough of your stupidity and foolishness, you spoilt brat. One more silly word from you and I will slap you with all the anger I feel toward you and your mother. I know you had been the cause of all my problems somehow, but the only unfortunate thing is that I cannot prove it. You can’t walk into my house to insult me. I won’t take that” Nana Ekua said, shaking with unbridled anger.
“Is she the friend you wanted me to meet? I’d rather go and dine with pigs than stay in the same room with her. Get me out of here,” Renee turned to Samba and said.
“Not until the scores are settled Renee. That witch happens to be my friend and employer. Don’t get me wrong but I think you owe her an apology,” Samba ordered.
“Apology, my foot! I’d rather die than say sorry to her. She is disgusting. She cheated on my brother and you want me to apologise to her? Forget it!” Renee rattled on.
“But you and I know that is not true, don’t we? She never cheated on her husband, did she?” Samba stated.
Kobby who had heard the exchanges came out into the living room with his son on his shoulders. Renee had been so engrossed in her anger that she had not heard or seen him come in.
“What is going on here?” Kobby asked.
Renee turned immediately. “Kobby, what are you doing here?” she asked„ very shocked.
“I should be asking you that question. This is my home,” Kobby answered.
Renee couldn’t believe what she heard. Samba was also dumbfounded. He didn’t know they were back together.
“You traitor! You stood me up the other time for her? She was the emergency you had to attend to, right?” Renee asked, disgusted.
“Use those words again and I will be very angry with you. Why do you use such words to describe me? Were you expecting that Nana Ekua and I stay apart forever? Problems are bound to come up in any relationship. You just don’t leave them unsolved; you fix them and stay together. That is what love is all about. It’s about trust, commitment and loads of forgiveness,” Kobby explained.
“Mom should come and listen to this. You’ve completely lost it. After all that we did for you, you betray us this way. After all that we did to make sure you are free from the spells of that woman, listen to what you are saying,” Renee rattled on angrily.
“What do you mean by that? What did you and Mom do this time?” Kobby asked suspiciously.
“Kobby, please take it easy. I know you are not going to like this but you were tricked. It was all a set up. Everything was well-planned,” Samba explained.
“What are you talking about?” Kobby asked, his suspicion at its peak.
Samba talked about the call Nana Ekua received that day; he also talked about the call he, Kobby, received shortly after that. He mentioned the call he received after he returned from the hotel that day. And he told him they had all been planned. A guy was paid to play the part of Nana Ekua’s lover.
“Renee, tell me you didn’t do a thing like that?” Kobby said, fuming with anger.
“I am sorry, Kobby, but Alberta said Nana Ekua was a witch. I was scared something bad would happen to you that was why I got involved. Oh, I am so sorry, please forgive me,” Renee said.
“You are the traitor here. How could you do a thing like that to me? You knew better than anyone just how much I loved Nana Ekua. You knew how much I suffered because of what happened. And all this while, you knew it was nothing but a lie and you didn’t say anything? How could you, my own sister, betray me like this? Take her out of my sight before I completely lose it,” Kobby said, very furious now.
Nana Ekua who had to sit down because of the shock she felt was weeping now. Her own sister-in-law had ganged up with Alberta to do this to her and her mother-in-law was aware of the ploy? She had suffered all this pain because of their selfishness? She had always known that her in-laws didn’t like her but to go to this extreme was too much for her to bear.
“What did I do to you Renee, what did I ever do to deserve this?” she asked through her tears.
Renee was weeping too. She had not seen her brother this angry. And the thought that the sight of her made him that furious hurt her.
“I am sorry, sister Ekua. I am so sorry,” she repeated several times.
“And who is Alberta? Do I know her?” she asked.
Renee was mute.
“Didn’t you hear her, are you deaf now?” Kobby asked.
“She is a friend of mine. She said you stole her man when she travelled outside the country. I’m so sorry! She said she managed to stop your wedding to one Bernard but he never got over you…and she was so bitter and filled my head with a lot of things. And then she said you make men fall in love with you and then you leave them and take everything that they had. I was scared that would happen to my brother. He loved you too much. He neglected me when he met you.”
“I am sorry too, Nana Ekua, I am truly sorry. I think my job here is done. You should excuse us for now, ” Samba said and took Renee’s hand and stormed out of the room.
Kobby was furious not only with Renee and his Mom, but he was even angrier with himself. How could he have been so stupid? How could he have fallen for that crap? He went over to Nana Ekua who could do nothing but cry. He put the boy, who appeared sleepy, in the other sofa and went to his wife. And then he took her into his arms and run his hand through her hair to console her.
“I’m so sorry, Nana, I am so sorry. I’ve sorely disappointed you to the unthinkable degree. I promise there will be no more tears on my account. There will be no more pain. I will spend the rest of my life atoning for all the tears you have shed because of me.
From now on I am going to love you till the heavens are no more. I am going to spend the rest of my life replacing every tear you’ve shed with a smile. I am going to love you and only you forever. You are my breath, my joy, and my life. You are my love forever and I am forever your love,” Kobby said and wiped her tears with a kiss on each eye.
“I love you, Nana Ekua, I will love you tomorrow and I will forever love you,” he managed to say when they broke up after a passionate kiss.
“I love you too, Kobby. Without you, there is no me,” Nana Ekua managed to say through her tears.
Kobby picked up Junior and took hold of his wife’s hand. He led her to the bedroom after putting their son down in his room.
They were too excited to sleep. There was so much to talk about. There was so much he wanted to tell her. He told her about a new house he bought and was thinking of moving in when he couldn’t bear to live in their house filled with memories of them. He told her he wanted them to move into that house and start afresh and fill it with beautiful memories.
They talked far into the night.
He lay and held his wife who was now asleep. He thought of how much he had missed having her in his arms every night. And he held her close and tears formed in his eyes. He had missed her so much.
He kissed her gently on the cheek and drew her closer to him. Kobby thought of how he had sorely disappointed her and acted so stupidly over nothing, and promised he would spend the rest of his life making it up to her. He looked down at her with his heart in his eyes. He loved her too much. His eyes roamed her body and came to rest on the top of her breast that was showing out of her negligee. He touched it gently and Nana Ekua smiled in her sleep.
“I am forever your love, Nana Ekua.” he whispered into her ears and soon drifted off to sleep.
***
Early the next morning Kobby left a note on the bedside table and left for town.
He rang the doorbell continuously until the houseboy opened the huge gates. He drove in quickly and got down as soon as he applied the brakes and dashed out without bothering to close the car door.
His Mom and sister, who had been awaken by the constant ring of the doorbell, were at the door now.
“How could you do that to me? How could you do that to your own son? You saw my pain, you saw my frustrations and you knew it was all a lie?” Kobby exploded with deep passion, his face twisted with the depths of the pain he felt by their betrayal.
“What has come over you? What did I do?” his Mom asked with a mixture of fear and confusion.
“Cut the act, mother! I know. I know you are behind the calls I received about Nana Ekua’s supposed lover. You planned this. You did this to me. Why? Why do you hate Ekua so much?”
His mother could not utter a word. She looked at Renee and she nodded to signal the truth was out in the open. She felt embarrassed that their ploy had been uncovered.
“Is it that you don’t want me to be happy? Is that it? Are you still holding my father’s death against me? What happened was an accident. I lived for a long time blaming his death on me because he came to see me. I finally found happiness with Ekua and you want to take that away from me?”
His mother, who had tears streaming down her cheeks did not have anything to say in her defence. She sat down on the stairs and wiped her tears with her hand. It was true she blamed her husband’s death on her son. He was the reason she lost him and somehow, she wanted him to pay for it. She did not have anything against Ekua per say. She would have done that to any woman who would have made her son that happy. In truth, she wanted him to suffer just as she had suffered when she lost the love of her life with two children to raise alone.
“Aren’t you going to say anything? Let me tell you this, I know I can’t choose my family but if any of you pull up something like this ever again, I will never forgive you. One thing is for sure though, I can never trust the two of you ever again,” he said and turned to leave.
“Kobby!” his Mom called. “I’m so sorry, my son! You’re right. I did it because I was bitter. Please forgive me. Renee didn’t want to go along with it. I forced her to. Sorry for causing you pain.”
“I think you should see a shrink. You need help badly if that’s how you feel.” he said and walked quickly to his car. Renee followed him.
“Kobby please, we are sorry. I know you are disappointed in me but please have mercy on me. You are the only brother I have. Samba is still mad at me. He told me he could not trust me after what I did. He thinks we should take it a day at a time. I feel your pain now. I didn’t know how it felt. Please forgive me and help me with Samba.”
“You are lucky that guy has not left you after this. He must love you that much. But I’m not going to lift a finger to help you with anything. Learn to fix your problems and messes and stay clear of that lunatic friend of yours if you know what’s good for you.”
“I’m truly sorry Kobby. Samba warned me already about Alberta. She even tried to seduce him, can you imagine?
“Stay clear of her for good. She is troubled”
“I hear you brother, I’ve learnt my lessons.”
Kobby got in his car and left.
He stopped at a flower shop and waited for it to be opened. As soon as the owner opened the gates, Kobby was inside.
He picked a bunch of Nana Ekua’s favourite flowers and picked a card too. He scribbled something in it with a smile on his face and carried it to the car.
Kobby arrived home a while later. The huge gates opened and he drove in relieved. He hid the flowers behind and found Ekua in Junior’s room, putting a diaper on him.
He gave her the flower with a brief kiss and Ekua’s face lit up.
She turned the card to read the message. The inscription, “Forever your love, Kobby” made her look up at Kobby and her love for him showed in her face. She was glad things have finally worked out between them.
She stood up from the bed and hugged Kobby tightly and he surprised her with a deep, tender and long kiss.
Junior giggled and they both laughed.
