It was an exhilarating time with Rose.
They rode on sturdy mounts up the gentle hills into the most beautiful collection of exotic trees, flowers and water bodies Temi had ever seen so far.
Eventually, they came out of the trees onto the plateau of the hill, which was a breath-taking expanse of beautiful green grass and a gently flowing river that gushed over the side to a tumultuous waterfall into the valley below.
Temi helped Rose set up a rectangular shade using stout limbs and a piece of tarpaulin. Next, she spread a blanket under the shade and covered it with a clean white sheet. They held the corners and sides down with some rocks.
She had prepared rice balls and the sweetest palm nut soup with green edible leaves, and Temi enjoyed it greatly.
Later, they took a walk down the riverside hand in hand until they came to the edge of the hill where the river plunged steeply down the incline to a shattering explosion below.
As Temi looked over the edge, he was surprised to see that deep down in the valley, across the raging river, there appeared to be a building nestled within the woods. He gasped with surprise.
“There’s a house down there!” he said, pointing at it.
Rosie’s eyes followed his pointing hand.
“Oh, yeah, a woman lives in there!”
“A woman?” Temi asked, puzzled. “Why? Is she from Dayo? Is she there all alone?”
“Yes, my love,” Rose said softly. “I’ve never seen her personally ever. But I’ve been told her name is Nneka Okez, and she lives there all alone. And yes, she is a citizen of Dayo, by marriage.”
“So why is she all alone down there?” Temi asked, horrified. “Surely, she needs to be a part of the community!”

She was only seventeen years old, a native of the Aradise, when one of the Warriors saw and fell in love with her, and they got married. On her wedding night, five years ago, her new husband was attacked by the White Kombas and killed. She never got over it, I guess. Her husband was buried in the village, and she has refused to leave his side even though Commander Freeman and the other warriors have begged her time and again to come back to The Haven.”
“Oh, that’s such a horribly sad thing!” Temi murmured with great passion.
“Yes, it is,” Rose said sombrely. “She lost her voice, you know, and had never spoken again ever since that horrible night. The Keepers tried to visit her and sometimes tried to bring her supplies, but she refused their help and grew rather violent. So, in the end, she was left alone. She lives all alone here, and everyone has left her to her fate.”
Temi was very saddened and stood still just gazing down at the lonely house hidden in that foliage below. Such a sad story, a young bride who had not really enjoyed the love of her husband.
And she chose to remain all alone in that thick forest just to be close to her dead husband and had been in there for five years.
Rose, seeing his compassion, put her arms around his waist from behind and pressed her cheek against his back.
Smiling, he turned within the circle of her arms and gathered her in his arms, kissing her deeply. A moment later, as they returned to their camp and fell on the sheet, Temi forgot all about the strange woman living in the valley and enjoyed the sweetness of Rose’s lips as they kissed again and again tenderly.
It was a day Temi didn’t want to end.
If he had control over time, he would simply have hit the ‘pause’ button and prolonged it for eternity. He had never been so happy in his life.
Eventually, Rose cried out when she felt his arousal digging into her lower belly again, and she pushed herself off him and sat far away, looking at him with a bemused expression of love on her face.
Temi turned on his side and looked at her with love and passion.
The sun was going down in the horizon behind her, casting a most amazing silhouette drawing of her that absolutely made his heart skip a beat.
“Oh, Rosie, you’ll drive me crazy,” he whispered tenderly. “Maybe, we should get married before embarking on this campaign because, truthfully, I simply can’t keep my hands off you.”
For a moment, a very brief moment, her face was filled with sudden dismay, but she quickly dropped her eyes and looked intently at her interlaced fingers.
Finally, she sighed and stood up quickly.
Temi got to his feet, his face concerned.
“Rosie!” he whispered, walking toward her. “What is it? Did my words hurt you?”
She sighed, and slipped her arms around his neck, pressing herself close to him and clamping her lips on his. She kissed him slowly and tenderly, her tongue probing rather deliciously into his mouth.
And she took his breath away.
His arms were tight bands around her as he kissed her desperately and with abandon. Her hands moved over him, unbuttoning his shirt feverishly. Temi kissed her gently, slowly, passionately, just as he had learned from Shemen Persis.
He kissed her earlobes and the base of her neck, and she shuddered with abandon as she drew off his shirt almost violently. Her hands worked feverishly at his belt buckle, and a moment later she had his trousers around his feet, and he stepped out of it.
Wearing only his briefs now, she took his hand and led him to the blanket, his erection an elongation of his desire that marched strongly and mightily in front of him.
She pushed him down gently onto the blanket.
Temi drew her forward, grabbing her breasts gently as his lips once again sought hers…but her teeth was suddenly rigid against his probing tongue.
Temi gasped as she suddenly moved out of his arms and sat on her haunches, regarding him with shadowed eyes, her face filled with sudden tension and her lips set tightly.
He smiled at her, trying hard to hold down his desire as it struck him that for one reason or the other, she didn’t want to make love to him yet.
“I understand, Rosie,” he said painfully even as he felt the sharp throbbing pains in his lower belly. “First we marry.”
She licked her lips and shook her head once.
“I want you to know I don’t hate you,” she said in a rush, and suddenly her voice was quite unsteady. “I just feel…oh, I just feel your presence here will force us to make wrong choices that will destroy Dayo! Nothing is more important than Dayo, and we need to take painful decisions to save Dayo!”
Temi bolted upright, gazing at her with mounting horror.
“Rosie!” he whispered hoarsely as sudden fear filled his heart. “What have you done?”
She got to her feet quickly and moved away from him, her eyes hard and wild, but her lips trembled.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered quaveringly. “I’m so sorry! But this needs to be done to save our dear Dayo!”
She looked up suddenly, her gaze focused on some point beyond him.
Horrified, still trying to come completely out of the cocoon of passion, Prince Temidayo turned his head…and saw them!
Daniel Godwin and Ziloux Escobar Adeyeye had come out silently from the grasses where they had been hiding, and they were now approaching him rapidly, closing the gap rather alarmingly.
Temi’s young heart pounded with the unbearable weight of Rose’s betrayal, and he turned his horrified eyes on her.
Daniel Godwin smiled wickedly, and then he slowly drew out his sword and came to a stop, looking as huge as a mountain, and looking at Temi coldly with that twisted smile plastered on his face.
With a broken heart, the young prince stared at Rose with unbearable pain.
“You taught me the greatest lesson of all, Rose,” he said softly. “Sometimes, a woman’s love is death.”
And that stung her.
It stung her badly.
Her eyes turned crimson instantly as she gasped, and tears spilled slowly down her cheeks as she slowly lowered her head, unable to hold his gaze a second longer.
