EPISODE 35
David Yeboah, Deputy Vice President of Dash Systems, belched contentedly and leaned back in his seat.
He was in the office of his best friend, Chris Oneil, who was the Vice President. They had just finished a delicious meal of plantain and yam with an incredible beef sauce in Chris’ outer office which was reserved for eating.
“Now that is what I call cooking,” David said with a smile. “Best beef sauce I ever tasted, bro. When did Doris become such an incredible cook? I remember you hated her cooking.”
They both laughed.
Chris was standing at the handbasin washing his hand with liquid soap. He rinsed his hand under the tap and pulled off two pieces of kitchen towel tissue to clean his hands. Chris dropped them into the dust bin and turned.
He was lean and handsome with full beard. His eyes crinkled with mischief as he sat opposite David and reached for mint from a little bowl on the table.
“Doris is still a horrible cook,” Chris said with a smile. “But I love her to bits. No, that didn’t come from my wife.”
David upended the little bottle of toothpicks and stuck one into his mouth.
“Not from Doris?” he asked with a look of disquiet on his face. “You’re a Christian, Chris. When did your status change?”
Chris Oneil chuckled and shook his head.
“Typical wicked man,” he said and pulled his white shirt out of his trousers to allow more room for his belly. “I got some good food, invited you to enjoy with me, and suddenly you brand me unfaithful.”
David laughed and reached for a mint candy too.
“That is special food, old boy,” he said with inquisitive eyes. “Served in beautiful glassware. Don’t tell me you bought it.”
“No, I didn’t,” Chris said with a little smile. “Stop that bullshit, man. Ask me a direct question and I’ll answer you. Playing Sherlock Holmes isn’t going to end the way you expect it to end!”
David loosened his tie a bit more and crossed his arms.
“Alright, man, who whipped up this incredible food for you?” he asked.
“Candice,” Chris answered simply and David’s eyes opened wide with surprise. He leaned forward with sudden interest.
“You mean Candy? Your new secretary?”
“Candy, yes, and she’s not that new, buddy,” Chris said with little chuckle. “She’s been here two years already. You haven’t been coming around for a while since Nicole joined us. That’s why she still seems new to you.”
David was looking at his friend quizzically.
“You hitting it, bro?” he asked softly, and he was not laughing now.
Chris looked at his friend levelly and shook his head.
“First, Dave, I’m a Christian, so I don’t go around hitting,” he said gently. “Secondly, I love Doris to death, so I’ll never cheat on her. Comfort is like a sister to me. She brought lunch to work about eight months ago when Doris was here and happened to taste it. So, she asked Candice if she could prepare me lunch two days a week. I protested but Doris wouldn’t have it. So, it has become a ritual.”
“Two days a week, huh?” David said and leaned back again. “Like today, Wednesday?”
Chris nodded.
“Yep, Wednesdays and Fridays,” he said. “Doris knows I love food, so this is her way of letting me have some. She insists on paying Candice for it even though the poor girl wants to do it free.”
“I’ll definitely be here this Friday,” David said with a giggle.
“Because Nicole is off on leave,” Chris said softly. “How’s it coming on? Heard she kissed some dude mercilessly in the reception a couple of days ago. It’s all over the place.”
A pained look crossed David’s face as he nodded weakly.
“Yeah, some fool she fell in love with hopelessly a year ago and who decided to walk out on her for some damn reason he only knows,” David said bitterly. “And then, out of the blue, he shows up.”
Chris Oneil nodded sympathetically.
“Handsome dude, I heard.”
Again a look of pain crossed David’s face.
“Handsome?” he said with a chuckle. “Looks like some Greek god. Chiselled.”
Chris chuckled.
“That bad, huh?”
“Fucking bad,” David said and rubbed his forehead. “I ain’t getting Nicole, ever, that’s for sure. Time to walk the bachelor line again. And talking about that, Candy is beautiful and kind. I liked her, bro. And now I find out she’s a damn good cook too. Remember the first time I saw her behind that desk?”
Chris nodded.
“Yep, I remember you trying to hit on her, to take her out, before Nicole rolled in and you forgot all about Candy.”
“Hey, hey, hey!” David said as he held up a hand. “Cookie didn’t quite crumble that way. I asked Candy on countless occasions to go out with me, have lunch with me, but she wouldn’t. Always had an excuse of sorts.”
“She thought you were a player, bro,” Chris said levelly. “And she wasn’t quite off the mark either.”
“Oh, c’mon, man!” David said with indignation. “You know who I am! Ever since Maud broke my heart I’ve been on the level, man. I went off the playing field and looked for love. First, I thought it was Candy, and then Nicole came along. Maud came back, remember, trying to pick up the damn pieces, but I told her I moved on. She’s still there knocking on the door but hey, I can’t trust that snake. I’m not a player, man. It is Candy. Maybe she had a guy.”
“Candy is single, bro,” Chris said with a faint smile.
“You sure?” David asked. “Then why was she so hard to get? Couldn’t get her to agree to even one lunch date with me!”
“Had her reasons, I daresay,” Chris said. “But, enough of that. Let’s go to the office and go over the proposal from the Malians. I think we should go for it.”
The two friends went to the luxurious office and headed to the mini conference area and were soon engrossed in the figures that Chris drew out.
About an hour later, David emerged from the office and paused in the secretary’s office. Candice, dark and beautiful, was sitting behind her desk typing from a document clipped to a board on her desk.
David walked up to the desk and paused with his hands in his pockets.
“Heard you cooked that wonderful food,” he said gently with a smile. “Heard Friday will be another day on the menu. Would you mind making it for two?”
She smiled beautifully and sat back with her lovely hands linked on the desk.
“That wouldn’t be a problem, Mr. Yeboah,” she said. “It will be my pleasure.”
“You still refuse to call me David,” he said. “Why, Candy? Alright, go out with me this Saturday for lunch. I insist.”
The smile left her beautiful face and she quickly dropped her eyes to the laptop in front of her.
“I have a funeral to attend on Saturday,” she said quickly.
David nodded.
“Alright, I understand that,” he said and put his hands flat on the desk. “So, tell me what time the funeral is. I don’t have anything planned for Saturday so I’ll accompany you, if you don’t mind.”
“No, Mr Yeboah!” she said quickly and looked at him, troubled. “I already…I’m going with someone.”
The door to Chris’ office opened and he came in and looked at them.
“Stop worrying the girl, Dave,” Chris said softly.
David looked from one to the other and it was evident that he was exasperated.
“What is this, huh?” he asked coldly, his expression suddenly pained. “Are you two having an affair, is that it?”
“Good Lord, Dave!” Chris said with chagrin. “I told you how it is!”
“So, what’s going on?” David asked and spread his hands wide. “You’re not dating her, she doesn’t have a boyfriend, and yet she would not even go out on a date with me! What is it, Candy? Am I too tall? Too ugly, perhaps? Have I offended you in any way? If it is me you don’t fancy find a nice way to tell me you don’t wanna know me! But this attitude of yours is not cool!”
Candice stared at David and suddenly tears swam in her eyes and she quickly took off her glasses and glared at him.
“I like you, David,” she whispered suddenly, her expression frank as she stared at him, and then she began to weep bitterly. “I more than like you! Each time you ask me out I just want to scream with happiness and prance around!”
David’s heart hammered as he rounded the desk and looked at her, and when he spoke his voice was gentle.
“So, why, Candy?” he asked, his face puzzled. “Why do you always reject me?”
Candice looked at Chris with sudden apprehension, and Chris nodded once. She sighed softly and pressed a button on the chair she was sitting on, and the chair whispered as it moved backward slowly and swivelled to face David. Candice reached down and drew up the hem of her skirt.
David saw that both of her legs were cut off just below the knee!
Candice had no legs!
“This is why, David,” she whispered as her tears fell. “I was involved in an accident six years ago and lost both legs. I walk around on prosthesis, right there.”
She pointed to the artificial legs propped against the side of the desk beside her and out of sight of visitors. She stared at David Yeboah with pain.
“So, you see, I’m a cripple, David,” she whispered. “And I’m not fit for an athletic, handsome, wonderful man like you. I’m no model, please, like Miss Anderson. So, please, would you leave me alone now?”
David Yeboah sighed as he took a step toward her, and on his face was a wonderful expression far from the revulsion and shock Candice had expected.
“And is that why you have rejected my advances for so long?” he asked gently.
“David!” she whispered and tried to move the special mechanical chair around. “Please…”
“I can walk for both of us, Candy,” David whispered gently as he suddenly dropped to his knees in front of her and placed his hands on her thighs. “And those thighs…damn, they looked so strong and sexy to grip me. You crazy girl, Candy! You kept me waiting this long for what? Is it you I wanted to date or your damn legs?”
She stared at him, shocked, and a very dazed look came across her face.
“Please, don’t make fun of me, David,” she whispered tremulously. “I can’t take it. Don’t play with my feelings. I like you so much and if you hurt me it will kill my soul.”
And David Yeboah leaned forward and kissed her gently, and then he stood up and smiled tenderly down at her.
“Wind up, Candy,” he said. “I’m taking you home.”
She looked at him with tears streaming down her face.
“I won’t sleep with you, David,” she murmured with a little laugh that sounded like a sob. “I’ve known only one man, who left me after the accident. I’m a Christian, and there will be no sex outside marriage for me.”
David Yeboah smiled beautifully.
“I understand, Candy” he said.
“And no more kisses, please,” she said in a rush. “If you do that I can’t control myself!”
He laughed gently.
“I think we’re going to have a long life together, Candy,” David said gently. “Go on, shut down, let’s get to know you more!”
Comfort looked at her boss desperately, and Chris Oneil smiled with a hint of tears in his eyes.
“He’s a good man, Candice,” he said with a sigh. “Shut down and go with him.”
And as David and Candice exchanged the most beautiful pair of stunned smiles, Chris Oneil turned and went back into his office.
“Miracles happen,” he whispered to himself as he shook his head. “You move in mysterious ways, Lord.”

The office door opened and Kobina Eduafo stuck his head in.
“Hey sis!” he said.
Esi looked up from the accounts she was preparing.
“Kobby,” she said a bit irritably. “What is it now?”
“Some man wants to see you,” he said.
Esi’s heart leapt for a moment as she pictured Yaw Boat and wondered if, by the strangest twist of good fates, he had come back to see her.
But the man that entered was not Boat.
He was of medium build and a little stocky. His eyes were frank and uncertain as he looked at her. He rubbed his hands together nervously and behind him Kobina made a comical face at his sister and then withdrew quickly and shut the door.
Esi jumped to her feet with a startled little cry and stared at the stranger with apprehension.
“Who are you?” she asked almost fearfully. “I saw you…in a dream, or vision, something, when I dozed off this afternoon! Are you another demon?”
The man smiled at that and shook his head hard.
“No, no, I’m not a kaakaamotobi!” he said earnestly. “My name is John Ainooson. A stranger…a certain man sent me to see you!”
“What man?” Esi asked suspiciously.
John reached into his pocket and brought out an expensive Rolex watch and put it on the desk. Esi gasped and sat down quickly.
“Boat’s watch,” she said and when she looked up her face was gentle and calm. “Boat sent you to me?”
“I don’t know his name,” John whispered. “He never told me. But if that is the name of the stranger, then yes, he sent me to see you.”
“But why?” Esi asked, puzzled.
John sat down facing the desk and spoke earnestly.
“I don’t know, Esi. All I know is that I have been in a lot of pain lately, and I was so emotionally distraught and destroyed. I kept seeing you in my mind’s eye as I was driving here. But one thing is for sure, Esi. The moment I set eyes on you, all the pain I was feeling just…vanished!”
Esi nodded gently.
“And I was in a lot of emotional stress over Yaw Boat, John,” she whispered. “But right now, sitting here and listening to you, there seems to be peace in my heart!”
He smiled broadly like a little lost boy and then he took out little flat box and handed it to her. Esi opened it to see a hideously expensive set of jewellery in the form of matching earrings, chain and bracelet. They glittered so wonderfully that it took her breath away.
“A little gift I brought you, Esi!”
“Oh, but I cannot accept this!” she cried with horror. “No, no, please! You can’t see me for the first time and give me this!”
“I believe we’re going to have a long life between us, Esi,” John said with a smile. “I saw a wonderful park when driving here, with a beautiful blue lake.”
“That’s the Eden Leisure Park,” Esi said in awed tones as she looked at him. “One of my favourite places.”
“Let’s go there then!” John said earnestly. “Please, let’s get to know each other more.”
“It feels like I’ve known you all my life, John,” she whispered gently. “But, yes, let’s go to the park now!”
She shut down quickly, packed her bag, and then went around the desk. John reached out and took her hand and the moment their hands touched and their fingers interlaced, they looked at each other with startled eyes as the beginnings of a powerful feeling swept right through them.
“My Lord!” Esi whispered to herself. “You’re the one, John.”
“And you’re the one, Esi!” he said with wonder, and they stood like that for a long time just gazing into each other’s eyes, lost to time and reasoning for the moment.
