EPISODE 20
Effe giggled suddenly, a sound of sheer happiness that she could barely contain.
“Do you know something, Eden?” she said gently. “Usually, this is about the time the great pain begins, when I’m with a man and I know he finds me attractive and wants to kiss or touch me. Great pain grips my whole body so intensely that I usually can’t breathe.”
“It means nothing now, Effe,” he said, and his voice was cold. “You’re paralysed, remember?”
“But I can feel things on my face, Eden!” she said quickly. “And I don’t have a headache now, or dry throat, and I’m not out of breath! On the contrary, I’m quite excited about it!”
“It means nothing,” he said in a tighter voice. “Wait until you are mobile.”
“Can’t you see it, Eden?” she whispered tragically, her voice desperate. “I’m not afraid of you! This is the very first time I’m feeling this way! Please, touch my nipple again!”
“No!” he said, his voice rising. “You don’t bloody know me! You haven’t seen me, and you don’t know what or who I am! I drink, and you detest that! I smoke weed, and you detest that! Effe, I am the kind of man you would detest in your normal way of life, so nothing has changed, understand? Whatever you feel now doesn’t mean shit because you don’t know me!”
Effe gasped, and tears came to her eyes then and slowly spilt down the sides of her eyes.
“I know you, Eden,” she whispered, her voice unsteady. “I’ve been in darkness, in terror, and in pain! My life was ending in the most horrible way until I came here. In my weakness, I feel your strength. In your anger and your dislike, I feel my heart soaring, Eden. And in my dead state, lying here alone, I see my movement in you. I don’t know what is happening because I’ve known you for just over two weeks. But, in my darkness, I see your light. My dark is illuminated by your light. You will not understand this, but I know you, Eden, I know you…my dark light.”
The man bunched up his right fist and held it against his mouth as he stared at her.
And his hand was trembling.
He leaned across the board with his hand on each side of her shoulder and brought his face down to hers.
“Listen carefully, Effe Kedem,” he said in a voice that had frosted over again and was filled with passion. “I’m nothing to you, do you hear me? I’m not your bloody light or anything near that! You’re just exhibiting normal attitudinal traits in traumatic patients who rely on their doctors too much, and end up thinking they’re romantically attached! But that is not the case here, do you understand? It is not!”
“I’m not some silly, vulnerable, teenage girl, Eden!” she spoke harshly, and tears bubbled in her eyes. “At least, give me that! I’m still shell-shocked from my stupidity in thinking a man I adored loved me in return, a man who was playing me in the worst way possible! Going by attitudinal traits, as you so perversely term it, the last thing I would do, barely three weeks after that ordeal, is make a fool of myself over some bloody old man of a doctor who has hidden in some bush, don’t you think?”
“Stop it, Effe!” he whispered fiercely. “Stop it this instant! You don’t mean crap to me, do you understand? I’ll do my best for you, and you will leave here and go to wherever you came from!”
“Eden!” she cried, horrified.
“You’re not good for me, Effe Kedem!” he said harshly. “You’re just a distraction of the kind I do not want right now, or ever will! If I had known you would be this way, I would never have brought you here! So, do what you must do, and I’ll do what I must do, and then you can get the hell out of here!”
“You’re scared, aren’t you?” Effe whispered, aware that his face was inches from hers. “You’ve convinced yourself that you’re immune to society, to the allure of women, haven’t you? Probably, some woman broke your heart, right, tore it to pieces? And, because of that, you thought you hated all women, so you fled into the forest to live like a hermit! But you’re simply deceiving yourself, aren’t you? My nakedness does affect you, doesn’t it?”
“You know nothing about me, nothing!” he gritted down at her. “Just stay the bloody hell away from me!”
“Aren’t you getting your perceptions a bit twisted, Eden?” she asked sardonically, but her voice was filled with pain. “You’re the one who can’t keep the bloody hell away from me! I lie here all day and only speak to you, so if you’re feeling something else, don’t blame it on me!”
“I feel nothing!” he grated out.
“Bloody liar!” Effe whispered.
He looked at her beautiful face, his face torn with great emotion.
“Oh, if only you could move, I’ll beat the hell outta you!”
“Liar!” Effe said gently. “You’ll never lay a hand on me. I feel it because I see you, even in my darkness, because you’re the light for that darkness. I’m not afraid of you, Eden. And I’m not going to allow your painful words to hurt me, because I know you’re fighting hard not to respond to me…but you betray yourself. You do feel something, hence your aggression and bullying! But I’m not afraid of you.”
He straightened with a curse and went for the robe.
Both did not speak after that as he gently put the fluffy robe around her and lifted her. He took her to the bed and set her down gently. He brought her food. It was rice cooked in a delicious stew, made especially soft.
She enjoyed every scrape of it.
“Can I have more, please?” she asked.
“No,” he said. “Too heavy on your stomach for now. Goodnight, Effe.”
“No, Eden, please stay.”
He did not.
He walked away to the door and paused.
And he spoke calmly.
“Don’t push this thing, Effe.”
And then he walked out, and the door slid shut behind him.
***
The two men were dressed in black jeans, black T-shirts and white-soled black canvas shoes.
The car they were in was a black Nissan Rogue with a fake registration number. They arrived in Barina village in the night and parked on the outskirts of the town near the school building.
One was a huge, bald and muscular man. His name was Kofi Sam, known to his cohorts as Fiko. The other was also huge but with a dose of fat, known as George the Bear.
They did not have long to wait.
Presently, their third member called Abdul emerged from around the school building with a slim, scared man in tow.
Fiko had sent Abdul earlier to skirt the village and find a local who could direct them to the lakeside.
“This man is Hamed,” Abdul said when he got to the car. “Knows the land inside out. He’s a fisherman and claims he even knows the exact location the girl is. Owns a canoe we can use when we hit the lake.”
“You gave him the dough?” Fiko asked.
“Yep,” Abdul said coldly.
“Good,” Fiko said. “Did you locate where the other girl is?”
Abdul nodded.
“Yep, I did,” he said.
“Alright then,” Fiko said. “We go with Hamed to find Effe. You go get the other twin, then leave the village. We’ll hook up at the rendezvous.”
“Sure, boss,” Abdul said, then he turned and spoke rapidly to the fisherman who was growing more scared by the sight of these huge, ominous-looking people.
“Tell him there’ll be more money for him once this is over,” George said.
“Did you confirm if that oyibo bastard left town?” Fiko asked.
“The Rupert guy? Yep, he left. Earlier this evening,” Abdul answered.
“Alright, bro,” Fiko said. “Get her out of the house if you can and whack her. Come, let’s move.”
Hamed sat in the car.
They made a U-turn, travelled on the path for a while, and then branched off into the trees towards the lake.
Abdul waited until they were gone, and then he struck off in the opposite directions towards the building allocated to Eyram and her parents.
***
Abdul picked the lock to the back door easily.
It was the dead of night and people were fast asleep.
He moved silently into the hall, using a pencil-thin beam of light from his tiny but powerful torch. The first room he entered was for Ken and Ivy, who were asleep. The woman was on the bed but the man, obviously feeling hot, was lying on a piece of cloth on the floor in his shorts only.
Abdul moved out silently and found Eyram in the other room, asleep.
She was wearing only a pair of white panties, and she looked sexy as she lay on her stomach with one of her legs bent upwards in a 7-shape.
Abdul walked up to the bed and stood looking down at her, and then he pulled the mosquito netting away and sat down on the edge of the bed.
Eyram suddenly gasped and sat up with a muted scream, and Abdul instantly pressed his gun into her mouth and motioned at her with a finger across his lips.
“Listen, baby, this has nothing to do with your parents, huh?” Abdul said softly but clearly. “If you make a sound, and your parents get in here, I’m gonna kill both, you understand? Now get up and come with me!”
Eyram’s eyes were wide with horror as she stared at this apparition in the room, but she understood him perfectly. When she realized she was virtually naked, she crossed her arms across her breasts suddenly, and Abdul smiled sardonically.
“Get up, bitch!” he said ominously. “Let’s go!”
He took hold of Eyram’s arm and dragged her off the bed.
“Be really quiet!” he whispered. “Your parents come out; they die!”
He did not allow Eyram to put on any other clothing as he forced her towards the back door with the gun pressed against her spine. They entered the porch and descended the steps.
Eyram did not know what was going on, and tears of horror fell down her cheeks as it occurred to her that she was being abducted, and would probably be killed!
Who was this man?
Why had he attacked them?
Was it for a ransom, or there was a far sinister agenda?
It was dark outside and the man pushed her hard.
“Move faster, damn it!” Abdul growled as he shoved her towards the front of the house.
They walked fast out of the compound, and when they were about five hundred metres from the house, the man spoke again behind her.
“Stop and don’t turn,” Abdul said as his hand slipped the safety catch on the gun to off, and he lifted the gun to shoot her in the head.
Suddenly, he felt a rush of air behind him, and as he tried to turn around a stout police club crashed down hard on his gun hand!
Abdul groaned with pain as the gun went off with a horrible spitting sound because of the silencer on its end. The blow made the gun fly out of Abdul’s hand so that the bullet missed Eyram.
Abdul ducked and lunged forward with lightning reflexes as he felt the club descending again. He rolled on his shoulders and came up in a spin, and found himself facing the grim, furious white man.
“You!” he whispered nastily.
“Yeah, right, me!” Rupert Henderson said in a voice that was filled with wrath.
At the sound of his voice, Eyram spun around with tears falling down her face.
“Rupert!” she moaned with horror. “Oh, Lord! You came back! I thought you left!”
“Stay back, Ram!” Rupert cried in alarm as Abdul lunged towards him.
He was amazed at how fast Abdul was!
He had not dared to use his gun because he had arrived late on the scene and had been afraid of hitting Eyram. Now he fumbled for his gun, and just as he got it out, Abdul crashed into him, sending both of them toppling to the ground and his gun flying out of his hand.
The back of Rupert’s head struck the ground hard, dazing him.
“Now you die, whiteboy!” Abdul said savagely as he smashed a blow into Rupert’s face, causing dark blood to pour out of his nose.
Rupert saw the shadow of the next blow coming towards his face, and he shifted his head, causing Abdul’s blow to smash with sickening force into the ground. Abdul groaned with pain, and Rupert sent a right hook ferociously into Abdul’s face.
The blow flung Abdul to one side and Rupert sprang to his feet, and a moment later kicked Abdul savagely in the ribs. Again, the man groaned and fell on his back.
Rupert looked around desperately for his gun.
Abdul reached for an ugly knife strapped to his left calf, and as he got to his feet he brandished the knife at Rupert.
“Rupe!” Eyram screamed. “He has a knife!”
“Will carve out your fucking eyes now, whiteboy!” Abdul said savagely and lunged at Rupert, who spun away desperately but not fast enough.
The knife cut through his right thigh. He felt the sharp pain and the warm blood spreading down his leg.
Abdul grinned evilly and aimed the next strike at Rupert’s throat.
Rupert raised his arm, and the knife sank almost to the hilt into his arm. Again, he felt the excruciating pain and the warmth of warm blood seeping over his arm. He kicked into Abdul’s groin savagely, and the man squealed with pain and began to buckle.
Rupert swung his right fist with all his strength into Abdul’s face, breaking the man’s nose!
As Abdul tottered backwards with surprise on his face as the blood flooded his face.
Rupert pulled the knife out of his arm, stepped forward, and slammed it into Abdul’s heart, waited a fraction of a second, and then twisted the knife savagely!
Abdul screamed, grabbed the knife, and then with his dying breath he headbutted Rupert savagely in the face, causing him to crash to the ground with a groan of pain.
“Motherfucker! Fuck you, whiteboy!” Abdul said as blood poured out of his mouth, and then he toppled forward on his face and remained still.
Eyram cradled Rupert in her arms.
There was blood all over him. It was pouring from his thigh, arm and nose.
“Rupe!” she cried. “Oh, Rupe, tell me you’re okay!”
Rupert was trying to stay conscious.
Ivy and Ken Kedem had come out now, drawn by Eyram’s earlier screams, and many people were also pouring out of their rooms.
“I saw…I saw them!” Rupert murmured weakly. “I saw…the Nissan Rogue…and I knew it was…fami-familiar…but it had had no number plate. Then, I remembered I saw it…at Effe’s house…Elaine’s car! I turned around and ca-ca-came back, knowing it…was bad!”
And then he lost consciousness.
Eyram screamed, thinking he was dead.
Her mother held her and drew her back.
Ken Kedem knelt and examined Rupert.
“He’s losing too much blood!” he shouted. “Get me clothes to tie the wounds! Somebody please go and get the Doctor Anifat quickly!”
