EPISODE 24
[passster password=”hweaballz”]Chris removed Effe’s robe, and then he lifted her. He put on the bathroom lights and gently put her into the huge bath. He sat with his back pressed to the bath and put her in front of him.
Effe felt the warm water over her left arm.
“It smells…nice,” she said.
“Yes, it does,” he replied. “I put herbs and fragrance in here. I’ll be massaging your left side, so try and move, okay?”
His hands moved across her body expertly, pressing dead nerves and massaging numb areas. At first, it was so pleasant for Effe. She could feel his hand sometimes on her hip and thighs, and in some instances, she felt nothing.
She concentrated on her legs, forcing to move them, but nothing happened.
And, after thirty minutes, she sighed tremulously.
“I can’t feel anything now, Eden,” she said dejectedly.
“Don’t give up, Effe,” he said sharply. “Please, trust me. You must try. Don’t let it slip! You took enough of the herbs to help us capture the nerves again.”
He encouraged her, massaging left side under the water.
“Do you feel pain?” he asked.
“No, Eden, nothing,” she whispered, and now tears of anguish filled her eyes.
Chris moved his hand to the left side of her neck, and with two fingers he pressed firmly into the neck, attacking her external jugular veins and massaging the internal ones, trying to force more blood to the superior vena cava vein.
Effe screamed suddenly and tears of anguish washed down her face.
“Eden!”
“You feel pain, right?” he asked tightly.
“Yes!” Effe screamed. “My left side…oh, God! Eden!”
“Move your left leg, Effe!”
“No, I can’t!” she wept. “Too painful, Eden, too painful!”
“Move it, damn it, Effe!” he said desperately. “We’re almost there, Effe! Don’t give up now! Move it, move it!”
The pain was like death!
Effe could not breathe!
It had gripped her so fiercely that her whole body was locked in a terrible rictus of torture, forcing her to scream over and over!
“Stop it, Eden, please stop it!” she wailed. “I can’t!”
“Yes, you can, Effe!” he said tightly. “Move your hand, move your legs, Effe! If you don’t, you might be paralyzed forever!”
Effe, still screaming, concentrated with all her might as he massaged her neck now!
She gagged horribly, and then suddenly, the pain just went away…and she thrashed her left leg and arm, and her stiff neck suddenly gave a crack, and now she shook her head rapidly!
Water splashed to the floor as Effe thrashed that beautiful leg, weeping and laughing at the same time.
“You did it,” he whispered, almost tenderly. “You regained your left side, Effe Kedem.”
“Oh, Eden!” she whispered tremulously, and then she dug her foot in the bath and forced herself to turn around, and her blind eyes scanned his face.
He knew the pain had been fierce, excruciatingly fierce, and he would not have blamed her if she had stopped trying. Truth was, he had expected her to quit trying. But, as always, she had surprised him with her inner strength, her tenacity and amazing will that never allowed her to give up in the face of the most crippling odds.
Her face was filled with tears, but she was smiling though with parted lips, the lights dancing off her flushed cheeks, and at that moment, there was not a sight in the world more beautiful than she looked.
Her left hand crept up his hard chest, lingering in his hair, and then up slowly to his right cheek.
“Eyram said you’re old and bearded,” she whispered. “But you’re not bearded, and your skin is not…leathery. You’re not old, Eden.”
“Oh, you damn girl!” Chris groaned in frenzy, and then he drew her near into him. His arms were fierce around her, but he did not crush her.
His lips found hers, and she opened fully with a sigh.
This, Effe felt, was the kiss.
She had received kisses from Steve, but she had always felt those kisses were preparations, something to take her mind off her mental deformity and prepare her body for him.
Most of the time, even when she tried not to think about it, her mind would still wander during Steve’s kisses, and soon after the crippling pains would begin.
But now, as she felt his sweet lips on hers, her mind did not have to wander. She enjoyed the bliss, the complete joy that made her crave for more, and for the first time in her life, her tongue did not pull away from his probing one.
She pushed it forward, meeting his, pushing past his…and then her tongue was in his mouth, gently exploring and giving.
His hand moved down her body, and she shuddered when his finger brushed across her left nipple, and she felt pleasure, agonizing pleasure.
Effe waited for the pain, even craved it, but there was no pain as his hand moved sweetly across the beautiful roundness of her left buttock, and smoothly down her left thigh, caressing her in a way she had never experienced before.
His lips blazed along her neck to her throat, and she shuddered uncontrollably.
Suddenly, she moaned with pain and he lifted his head suddenly.
“Damn,” he groaned painfully. “Sorry, Effe.”
There were tears in her eyes.
“I feel severe pain!” she whispered. “In my…my right side. Severe pin-pricks of pain.”
“Yes, the residual venom is trying to bunch up, and your system is fighting it,” he said quickly. “We don’t have to get you so excited. You need to rest, let your system rest and get strong enough to fight the poison.”
“Oh,” she whispered wonderingly. “So, it is not because we kissed?”
He looked down at her beautiful face and saw how horrified she was. The truth dawned on him then; she was shattered because she thought the pain was as a result of her getting intimate with him.
“No, Effe,” he said gently. “You’re not feeling psychological pain. This is actual pain.”
“How would you know, Eden?” she asked helplessly. “How would you know it is not the same old nightmare?”
He touched her cheeks and gently brushed the tears from her cheeks.
“You can always find out,” he said gently. “I’m quite sure you’re not dry.”
“Dry?” she asked, confused, and then it dawned on her. “Oh!”
He watched her silently as her left hand disappeared under the water. It was the sexiest thing he had ever seen, and for a wild moment, he almost kissed her again but controlled himself with steel nerves.
Effe’s hand crept down across her left thigh, and then she touched herself gently. The handsome man watched her as her face exploded with a sudden shock, and then an angelic expression slowly filled her face.
“Oh, Eden!” she whispered as she felt her extreme wetness, and at that moment the shyness hit her so fiercely that she covered her breasts with her left arm.
All her bravado, her brashness, and her teasing of the earlier days simply vanished, and suddenly she was aware of herself, aware that she was a naked woman in a tub with a naked man she barely knew.
Her face blazed with fierce shyness, and her head dropped a little so that her sightless eyes were staring unseeingly at his chest.
“Are you still feeling pain?” he asked gently.
“Yes,” she whispered.
“Alright, we’re done here. Time to get you to bed.”
He stood up and lifted her. He supported her as he dried her briskly with a towel. Effe’s left hand kept hovering across her breasts and her lower loins now, so acutely aware of herself and so shy that she could barely speak.
“You’re not old, are you?” she asked with a creased forehead.
He looked at her face, and then much against his will, he told her the truth.
“No, I’m not an old man,” he said.
“But you’re not going to tell me your age,” she stated.
“No, Effe.”
He lifted her and she put her arm around his neck. He carried her to the bedroom and put her down. Gently, he took out another nightgown and draped her in it, and then he covered her with the huge cover cloth.
“Are you hungry?” he asked.
“No, Eden,” she whispered instantly. “I’m too happy right now to eat.”
He took a towel and dried himself, and then he slipped into a pair of boxers and a loose vest and then slipped into bed with her.
“You’re not…naked, are you?” Effe whispered softly.
He knew she was filled with a lot of tension. The fear of not being able to heal, of remaining in her state of acute paralysis and blindness had filled her with a great need to talk incessantly and to act in ways she was not used to.
However, as she began to gain her healing, her inbred character was slowly exerting itself, and with it came an acute awareness of him, of her situation and surroundings, and she simply could not break it down.
“What’s going to happen, Eden?” she asked suddenly.
“About your recovery?” he asked, but he knew exactly what she meant.
“No, about us,” she replied. “I’m getting well, Eden. What happens when I’m able to walk and gain my sight?”
“You will go back to your life, Effe,” he said.
“Don’t you dare patronize me, Eden!” she said fiercely. “Above all else, don’t patronize me, please. This is very serious for me.”
“I wasn’t trying to.”
“Then stop what you’re doing! You kissed me, and I kissed you back. Don’t pretend you don’t feel anything for me. No matter what happens now, I want to know more about you. I want you there in my life. I’ve been touching you and coming strong at you, but that is not who I am, or what I am. I don’t even think it is right to have any semblance of a relationship, now, you know. But, if there’s something here, between us, I want to nurture it first.”
“Don’t rush it, Effe,” he said calmly. “You might not even like me once you see me. Secondly, I believe you’re reacting to me on the rebound, and that is not the best. You need time to get over Steve, and get over all the pain and heartache before deciding on another relationship.”
“There’s no pain to get over,” she said suddenly, quite worried about the sharp pain his words made her feel. “Steve is out of my life, forever. I’ll never touch him even if he’s the only man in the world. I’m talking about now, and let me assure you that I’m not on the rebound! I’m not some spoilt little horny girl looking for a good lay, no. I’ve not had the luxury of one yet. What I showed you earlier, wasn’t me. Right now, I’m confused, and a bit horrified about all that I said and did. Eden, I don’t want you to think I’m that sort of girl.”
He was silent for a while, and then he spoke in a calm voice.
“I’ve never for once thought you’re promiscuous, Effe. On the other hand, I see you as a pure, beautiful angel who faced the cruel brunt of fate’s fury. I was happy to see you fighting through it all, and I’m quite impressed with you. However, don’t get any ideas about us, Effe Kedem. You’re a very beautiful woman, and extremely desirable. But, I’m not the man for you. Believe me, you don’t need me in your life. So, get well and leave.”
She was breathing very hard, and her voice was unsteady when she spoke.
“You bastard!” she said, her voice pained. “You don’t tell me the kind of man I should move with! That decision is mine, Eden.”
“Well, seems to me you need a lot of coaching in that direction,” he said sharply. “Your last choice wasn’t exactly top-notch.”
“You’re pathetic, Eden!” she said, and her left hand flailed to push him. “You’re such a pathetic liar! I don’t know what happened to you, and why you’re so hard on yourself and feel justified to push women out of your life. But you can’t continue to run from love, do you hear me? Goodnight!”
She used her left hand to draw the cloth over her head and used her left foot to push his leg away from her.
He sighed deeply.
“Do you still feel the pain?” he asked.
“Leave me alone!” she retorted.
“Listen, Effe,” he said gently. “I do have a story, but I’m not going to tell you, not now. And yes, I would be a liar if I say you don’t affect me. But, let’s take it a step at a time, okay? A day at a time. Let’s see what the future holds.”
“And you will not push me away once I’m healed?” she asked from under the cloth. “You will continue to…see me, be friends?”
“If that’s what you want, yes,” he replied.
She pushed the cloth off her face and turned her face towards him.
She smiled, a very beautiful smile that turned her face into something amazing, something ethereal, something angelic…like the face of an angel…and then, suddenly, a most confusing word flitted through his mind’s eye as he looked at her with bated breath.
Angelface!
Effe put the cloth across her face again.
Chris Bawa laughed softly.
“Do you still feel pain?” he asked.
“A bit, especially in my right arm and shoulders,” she replied.
“Good sign,” he said gently. “Very good sign. I have a feeling you’ll be walking again sooner than you think, Angelface.”
“What?” she asked tightly and pushed the cloth off her face. “What did you just say? What did you call me?”
Startled, he looked at her with chagrin!
It was there, that strange word, and it kept playing over in his head: Angelface, Angelface!
It had become an unwanted earworm, a chant that made him want to get up and slam his head into the wooden wall.
Eden?” she insisted, and her face was filled with expectation.
“Nothing, Effe,” he said thickly. “I said bonum nocte.”
“And what does that mean, if I may ask?” she inquired.
“It is Latin, means good night,” he said.
Her face darkened a bit, and then she pulled the cover across her head again.
“Alright, Eden,” she said and was not surprised to find that her heart was pounding in a rather happy way. “Good night.”
He turned slightly on his side and pulled the cloth from her face. He leaned across her and kissed her gently, softly, magically. And then he fell on his pillows again.
Effe stuck her lower lip between her teeth.
He expected her to speak, to say something silly and funny like she always did, but she said nothing. She simply covered her face with the cover again and remained very still.
Her bout of shyness and self-awareness had returned, and that kiss…Lord, that kiss!
It was nothing she had ever experienced before!
And the amazing thing was that she had enjoyed every millisecond of it, and had not felt even a shadow of pain in her head!
This bushman was really getting into her blood. She sighed softly as she lay under the cover.
Suddenly, he turned on his side and draped a thick arm around her.
She felt safe and so happy.
And, as the rain finally stopped and a sliver of moonlight shone through the slats of the windows, casting silvery rays on the bed, the two troubled souls who had found a modicum of peace slept soundly in each other’s arms.
