Where did the confusion end, and where did expectations begin?
The world was indeed an enigma sometimes, for how else would Allan Davidson appear on a night that everything had been pointing to only happiness?
Eyram could feel a ball of unhappiness in the pit of her stomach as she sat morosely on Allan’s bed.
He had driven her to his home in the confusion that had followed Rupert’s departure. Eyram had sat with Rupert’s coat in her laps. She had been tempted to call him on several occasions, but she always found the strength to stop herself.
She had seen raw pain on his face, and it had cut her to her very core.
Above all else she wanted things to be right between her and Rupert, but still, the fundamental questions remained and needed to be resolved.
She had not known him for any length of time, and he was a stranger whose job was definitely dangerous. He was a man on the move, with no roots to tie him down.
On the flip side was Allan, a man she had had deep feelings for!
Theirs had been bound for the altar until Eyram opened up to him about the loss of her virginity to her uncle, and her inability to have children as a result of that trauma.
Allan had tried, but he could not handle it. His dream had always been to have a lot of kids and love them. He had tried to handle it, yes, but when he told his parents, they had not been too enthused about it.
The truth was, he was an only son, and his rich parents had expected him to marry and have many children to spoil. Eyram’s inability to conceive had thrown them hard, although they loved her, and had long accepted her.
He had left her during the confusion, and Eyram had taken a long time to let go. And now he was back, ready to put it all to rest and move on with her into marriage.
And his response had been simple when she asked him a simple question.
“Why now, Al? What has changed now?”
“What has changed, my love is that I’m no longer a fool,” he said sadly. “I came to realize that we could do exactly what you suggested; adopt children, or use a surrogate mother. That wasn’t of the essence. What matters is that I could not live without you, my darling. These three years have been hell for me! Not a single second passed that I didn’t think about you. I love you, Eyram. I can’t spend the rest of my life without you.”
He went on to explain that he had been to the hospital several times, but had been told she was on leave and unreachable. He had called her several times, but her phone had always been off.
As it turned out, he and his friends had been at the Harbour View resort when she and Rupert came in, and the rest was history.
These were words she had been dying to hear for three years…but, somehow, they failed to achieve the depth she expected.
Confused and with a racing mind, she allowed him to send her home.
Although it was almost eleven o’clock in the night, his parents had still been up when they got to the house. They received Eyram warmly and expressed their greatest regrets for how they, and their son, had treated her.
It felt like the right place to be and felt like a new start. All it required was for her to make the decision to see Rupert and gently end whatever had started between them.
But, somehow, she could not hold on to that decision.
Allan had assumed that whatever had been between her and Rupert was over.
Eyram had always been impressed with the Davidson Estate. It was a sprawling spread covered with four amazing buildings. There were gardens, green open spaces and a divergent array of wealth and beauty.
This could be the perfect place to raise a family.
The decision should have been simple, really.
She had loved this man fiercely once and still had the hot embers simmering in there. It would take just a little bit of fanning to ignite it to full flames, and yet, she still floated on that cushion of confusion.
And, once in his room, he took a shower after she refused to join him. He came back into the room fully naked, looking every inch as good as she remembered him. And he did not speak then. He just took her in his arms and kissed her.
Sweet, gentle kisses, just as she remembered and used to crave. She responded automatically, perhaps expecting the flames to erupt.
Eventually, she found herself on the bed with him across her. His kisses were now fevered and desperate as his hands roamed over her body, down her thighs, up her dress.
And then, his fingers gently roved over her panties, and slid slowly underneath…
***
Chris Bawa carried her into the wooden cabin and took her to the bathroom.
She was shivering from the cold that was seeping into her skin. He quickly ran a warm bath for her.
They did not talk much as they took a bath together, and then he dried her. He carried her back to the bedroom and lay her down gently. He massaged her with exotic oils before putting a warm robe around her.
The weather had become cold because of the rainstorm. It was still drizzling, and so he covered her with a cloth.
“Thank you, Eden,” Effe murmured sleepily.
Effe turned on her side and waited anxiously for him to lie down beside her. Her heart was thudding, and her whole being was a constant resonance of the joy in her soul.
The passionate emotions assailing her were threatening to literally explode, and she lived through phases of extreme bliss to little spells of sadness. That she had wasted her energies and life on a man who had turned out to be a total scoundrel made her sad.
She had tottered on the edge of the bottomless abyss, lived right next to death. Her being alive was unbelievable, something she had never expected to happen.
But she had survived!
And that survival had been a revival because she had been able to blast clear of her most oppressive evils of the soul and the mind. She had spent years trapped in the oppressive darkness, screaming for relief and a way out in a never-ending labyrinth, a terrifying maze of constant torture!
Life, for long periods, had not been worth living. Death, for long periods, had seemed more and more like a heavenly option. She had needed help, and she had needed to breathe!
And then, just as she had thought her life could not get any worse, Steve’s chilling betrayal had occurred, and from that moment, Effe had not felt any inclination to live.
Finally, she had been ready to embrace death albeit the thirst to make things right and expose them for who they really were.
Her trip to this part of the country had been in strife because she had felt quite strongly that it was going to be her grave, and she had not wanted to die in a forest with a stranger by her side.
And yet, it had been as if a phase of her life had ended the moment she got here. Her waning resolve had been strengthened by the care and expertise of a man she could not see, a man with a deep, rumbling voice and the gentlest of touches.
He had roared like a lion and yet had cared for her as he would a little child. Then, slowly, he had helped to drag her from the jaws of certain death, helping her bury her most arduous and fractious psychological nightmares.
And then, finally, for the very first time in her life, she had felt like a woman, like a human being, and her joy was simply spilling out of her heart.
So, she waited for him to join her in bed and hold her. She wanted to feel his arms around her, and to hear his gentle voice. She could still hear his groans and moans of passions and revel in the powerful knowledge that she had been able to give him as much pleasure as he had given her.
However, she did not feel him on the bed. She stretched her hand, hoping to touch him as she usually did, but she felt only the coldness of the bed, and suddenly she became afraid.
“Eden?” she called softly.
“I’m here, Effe,” he replied, but his voice was not from where she was used to hearing it. It came from somewhere to her right, behind her. She turned on her back suddenly as she tried to fight down her uneasiness.
“Are you not coming to bed?” she asked.
There was a long silence that made her fear escalate.
“Eden?” she whispered.
She felt him on her right side as the bed depressed, and she turned in that direction. Suddenly, she felt his hand on hers, and a moment later he covered her right hand with both of his.
“I’m here, Effe,” he said gently. “I’m going to sleep on the couch tonight.”
Her heart did a troubling cartwheel that sent pangs of pain through her, making her scowl.
“Eden!” she cried anxiously. “Why?”
“Because, if I lie next to you, we’ll make love again,” he said gently. “We couldn’t control what happened, Effe Kedem. It was a moment of…magic, if I can put it that way. But, you know we can’t continue making love.”
“There you go again!” she said fiercely and struggled to sit up. “What’s wrong with you, Eden? I heard you screaming in the storm, I heard your tears of anguish! You’re in pain deep down just as I was! I found release because I trusted you, Eden, and confided in you! Why can’t you do the same? Are you telling me you feel nothing for me?”
“I do feel something for you, Effe, damn it!” he said, and his voice was tinged with pain. “But that’s the problem, isn’t it? That is exactly the problem! I can see you, and relate to you! I can see what goes on around you, your expressions, your beauty, your grace! But you can’t see me! You don’t know who I am!”
“I can’t see you with my eyes, Eden,” Effe cried and suddenly put her hands on his face, tracing every plain, mentally drawing him. “I can’t see you, but I see your soul, Eden. And it is a beautiful soul, a selfless soul, a soul that set me free and let me see things even in my blindness. I do not have to see you before I can love you, Eden!”
“You don’t love me!” he said, his voice torn with passion. “You don’t love me, Effe! Stop that this instant!”
She felt him moving away from her, and her fear escalated. She reached for him blindly.
“Eden!” she whispered as she leaned forward on her hands and knees now. “Listen to me, Eden…listen to me carefully! I know I was all messed up inside, okay? The trauma of my childhood had torn my confidence to shreds, and yes, I could not even make love to Steve, a man I thought I love dearly! But, being here with you these few weeks has been a different experience. It has shown me a depth to life I never knew, or appreciated, before! And I want you to believe this, Eden, whoever you are…if I did not love you, I would not have allowed you to make love to me, even if the act would set me free from being psychologically frigid! Do you hear me?”
“You lie!” he said, and his voice was harsh as he leaned forward towards her. “You lie, Effe! You don’t love me! Don’t love me! You’ve known me for less than a month! We made a mistake and made love…but you don’t love me!”
“Oh, shut up, you bastard!” Effe screamed, and tears came to her eyes as the pain slammed through her. “Is that how you see it? A bloody mistake? Damn you, Eden! That was the most beautiful thing that ever happened to me! I don’t make mistakes like that, Eden! And I would never sleep with any man by mistake! I allowed you to make love to me because of what I feel for you!”
“And that is not love, Effe!” he screamed into her face. “Damn it, girl! What do you know about love? Nothing! Absolutely nothing! You thought you loved that bastard, but he was only playing you! You were torn by that betrayal, and your nerves were raw! So you came here, alone with me, and your soul was ready for something to relieve the pain you were feeling! You couldn’t see me, and so your mind formed an image of me, something you could cling to and have whimsical tenderness for!”
“Stop making what I feel for you dirty, Eden!” she said desperately and sat on the bed with her back to the headboard, and her fingers fluttering around her face as the tears fell down her face. “You’re hurting me, Eden, please stop it! This is not what I was expecting from you after what happened between us!”
“I’m sorry, Effe, really,” he said, his voice a little bit controlled. “But what you feel isn’t love! You can’t love a man like me!”
“And why not?” she shot painfully at him, and she wished above all things that she could see him. “Oh, stop wallowing in self-pity! It does you no bloody good, Eden! Hiding in this forest is not going to make you immune to life! Look at what happened? In all your security, I came here and made you fall in love with me!”
“I’m not in love with you!” he screamed, and she heard a thud as he kicked the bed savagely. “You don’t know me, Effe Kedem! I’m not a man you should fall in love with!”
“Why, Eden, why?” she cried bitterly.
“Because I am a murderer!” he shouted into her face as he sat on the bed and gripped her upper arms tightly. “I’m a murderer, Effe Kedem! A murderer of women and babies!”
She gasped and went rigid.
“I don’t believe that, Eden,” she said hollowly. “You have to give me more than that. You’re just scared to love, aren’t you? You built this safe haven for yourself and thought you’re immune to it all, that it would be good to be here, helping the poor villagers occasionally! But it didn’t quite work out like that, did it? You didn’t expect me to come in and put your well-laid plans asunder, right? You can deny it for as long as you want, Eden, but I know you feel it too. You’re just a coward, afraid to face the bright day that will take you out of whatever darkness you’ve buried yourself in!”
“Shut up!” he screamed in anguish, and then his voice became more subdued, more pain-filled. “You know nothing about me, Effe, nothing!”
“Then tell me!” she screamed at him. “Why are you doing this? Why are you letting sheer pain suffuse us when you can break free from whatever past is haunting you? It doesn’t make sense, Eden! Tell me what it is, and let the love we feel heal us!”
“There’s no love!” he said softly, but in a fierce outburst. “You can’t love a man you can’t see!”
“Oh, it is convenient for you to believe that, isn’t it? It sets you on some little pedestal of righteousness, doesn’t it? But you’re wrong, Eden, damn wrong! I don’t need a million years to know I care for you! What I feel now is strong, pure, and…beautiful, Eden! I’ve learned to hate Steve, you know, when I believed I loved him. But I see a difference now, Eden, yes. I know that if you hurt me as much as Steve did, or even worse, I can never hate you. If you treat me the way he treated me, I would probably forgive you and ask you to love me again! That’s the difference, Eden, and this is real!”
He stared at her for some time, and his jaws worked hard with emotions that threatened to rip him apart. All he craved was to take her in his arms and kiss her till the end of the world, cherish her till she could take no more.
This strange, beautiful woman who had come into his life and turned it upside down in a few weeks. This stubborn woman who had such grace, such finesse, and was as strong as the essence of life!
She was right, of course.
She was not something whimsical but had become integral now, a constant, and for the remainder of his life, he would always hear the tinkling and heavenly sounds of her laugh, the ethereal blast of her smile, her voice, her touch, her scent, her allure…indeed, she was an angel he would see in his mind’s eye forever!
“You’re done here, Effe,” he said in a lost voice. “The venom is out of your system, and your damaged cells have rebuilt nicely. The covering over your eyes has grown to a point that would make it easy to be taken off. If you wait any longer, you might be blind permanently. So, you must leave. We’re done here.”
He saw how that affected her.
Her shoulders dropped, and it was as painful as seeing a lovely flower wilt under the scorch of the sun. Her whole face fell apart, and in the glare of the light, he saw tears washing down her face.
“Is that it, Eden?” she whispered tremulously. “You’re kicking me out of your life?”
“Effe, if you don’t have that eye surgery in the next seven days, you’ll be blind forever,” he said calmly.
“I’ll rather remain blind, Eden, than to be kicked out of your life like vermin!”
“You’re not vermin!” he said sharply, painfully. “Stop that, Effe, please!”
“Then stop being heartless!” she screamed right back at him. “Stop hurting me, Eden! If you want us to part like this then I’m not leaving here, do you understand?”
He sighed deeply, and then he leaned forward and took her hand. She snatched her hand away from his with a bitter expression on her face.
“No, no, Eden!” she whispered. “Don’t! please, don’t hurt me anymore!”
“You have the surgery, Effe,” he said softly. “When your eyes open, and you still want this, we’ll continue!”
“I don’t have to see you to justify my love for you, Eden,” she said softly. “What I feel for you is right here.”
She touched the left side of her chest.
“I’ll always love you, Eden,” she whispered. “Just remember that. Always.”
No!
Chris Bawa scrambled off the bed with a cry of horror!
No, no, no!
These have been Baaba’s words, exact words, verbatim, just before the car veered off and smashed into the tree that horrible night!
I’ll always love you, Eden! Just remember that. Always!
No, no, no, no!
Babs!
Ohenewaa!
He heard Effe calling his name, but he could not stop!
He crashed blindly out of the door and moved away!
And he saw Ohenewaa in the hallway, her whole body suffused with fire, burning, burning, burning!
Her hands were outstretched in her horror, her face in torment!
No, Lord, no, no!
Help me, Daddy! Please, help me!
Chris Bawa crashed into the kitchen, moaning with pain, his hands clamped to his ears, his face screwed up with agony!
Babs was standing at the sink, smiling at him, her face tranquil.
I’ll always love you, Eden! Just remember that. Always!
And then she was joined by Ohenewaa, and both were burning, burning, burning!
No, oh Lord, Babs!
Ohenewaa! My princess, my sweet princess!
He rushed towards them, wanting to save them, to help them, to hug them!
But they disappeared, and he was alone in the kitchen!
Chris Bawa sat down on the floor and hugged himself!
He wept bitterly!
His huge body shook uncontrollably, and mucous slowly fell from his nostrils.
He was a broken man!
***
Jonathan Afful came awake suddenly.
He was in bed, wearing only a pair of polka-dotted boxers.
His air-condition was breezing, keeping the room nice and cool.
But the lights were on.
The young, beautiful police constable he had brought home was sitting up in the bed and screaming. She was wearing only her white panties, and her hands tried to cover her ample breasts as she screamed. Her screams had woken him up.
“Shut the fuck up!” said the cold voice of the man standing at the foot of the bed.
A white man dressed in severe black jeans, black combat boots, and black singlet. His dark eyes bored unwaveringly into Jonathan Afful.
The woman stopped screaming and looked fearfully from Jonathan to the intruder in the room.
“Get out of here,” the man ordered the woman. “Now!”
The young policewoman scrambled from the bed, picked up her dress from a sofa and fled from the room. When she got to the hall, she found two more white men in the same black outfit waiting. They ordered her to sit down and keep quiet.
They were holding guns, and so she obediently sat down and quivered with terror.
“What’s the meaning of this, Rupert?” Jonathan Afful asked with fury. “How dare you? How the hell did you get into my room?”
Rupert Henderson, still hurting badly from the Eyram situation, walked around the bed and unleashed a powerful fist into Jonathan’s face. The blow split Jonathan’s lower lip and hurled him into the headboard.
Rupert grabbed his ankle and pulled him off the bed. He grabbed Jonathan’s wrist, spun him and slammed a fist into his jaw. Jonathan crashed to the floor with a moan of pain. Rupert kicked him savagely in the stomach, and Jonathan retched once before vomiting horribly.
Rupert knelt and slapped the Chief Inspector so hard that Jonathan’s face smashed into the rug.
“Are you crazy, you motherfucker?” Jonathan screamed as blood poured off his face. “I’ll have you thrown into jail for this, bastard! What’s gotten into you?”
Rupert’s foot crashed into Jonathan’s chest, sending him sprawling on his back. He stood over Jonathan’s body and glared down at him with dangerous eyes.
“You fucking piece of shit, Jon!” Rupert hissed with wrath. “I’ve long suspected you, asshole because Ruffalo Sacchi was always a step ahead of us! So, I intentionally put the names of two drones in my weekly reports to you, Jon. Pascaline Tapoli and Richard Abesim! And guess what happened, motherfucker? Both are dead! Only people that knew about my drones are me, Rick and Toby. You’re the only person I informed in my report, and they died! You piece of shit, you’ve been working for Ruffalo and giving him my reports. How bloody dumb could you be?”
And then Rupert drew his gun, pumped it up, and pointed it at Jonathan Afful’s head!
