LOVE CHANGES
Meanwhile, Lucy had just been close by.
She was behind the car all along listening to the strange guy chatting with a security guard and she couldn’t help but wonder if it’s the same guy she had just had an altercation with not long ago at the other supermarket that is chatting so lively with a security guard.
“I can’t believe it’s the same guy, look at how lively and full of life he is with a security guard of all people. Where then did all that bitterness earlier come from?” she thought to herself amazed. She then decided to ask about him from the security guard.
“If they can chat that much then the security guard should know a little about him,” she reasoned.
“Good evening bro, she greeted the security guard on getting to where he was.
“Good evening ma. How may I help you?” the security guard responded.
“Don’t be offended. I just want to ask you about that man that just left you not long ago.”
“Oh, you mean my boss?”
“How do you mean your boss?” Lucy asked surprised.
“I mean he owns this supermarket.”
“Are you saying that man owns this supermarket, the same God’s own supermarket? The best and biggest supermarket in Abuja and one of the best in Nigeria as a whole?”
“Exactly, ma and if I may ask, why do you want to know about him? Cos it seems you don’t know him that much,” the security guard asked seeing the shock and surprise on Lucy’s face.
“We met earlier at another supermarket and had a little discussion, I never imagined that he owns a supermarket,” Lucy replied, still shocked that the guy owns such a supermarket.
“Who would have imagined he owns this supermarket?” she thought to herself.
“He doesn’t look like one that can own an establishment not to talk of one of the best in the country. Truly you don’t judge a book by its cover.
From what she heard, God’s Own Supermarket was one of the best in the country. It came into establishment three years ago and had driven every other supermarket in the state down. There’s hardly anything you are looking for in a supermarket that you won’t get here. It was always fully stocked and people even say you are sure to get things you might have shipped from abroad in the supermarket. It had been the talk of the town since it came into establishment and she couldn’t help but be amazed that she never for once cared to know its owner.
“But why go to another supermarket to buy something when you can get it from your place without stress?” she thought to herself.
“Well, yes he owns this supermarket and other businesses,” the security guard replies, bringing her out of her reveries.
“Oh wow, that’s amazing, I saw you two chatting and thought he was just a regular customer.
“Not at all. That’s how our boss is. He chats with everyone like that, he’s so humble and down-to-earth it took me almost a year before I realised he owns the supermarket. Some workers still don’t know that he is their boss. Most of the workers think that he is a friend of the manager.”
“What? How is that possible? Doesn’t he introduce himself to the new workers?”
“Hahaha, he hardly shows his face here. He comes once or twice in a month. Anyone that is employed here always thought that the MD is the owner. Only a few of us know him as the owner, He’s that humble and amazing. If he picks an interest in you, you are set for life,” the security guard replied with joy on his face.
Lucy couldn’t help but notice how happy he was while talking about his boss and realized that the strange guy was really loved by his employees.
“Who owns a business and hardly lets his employees know who he is?” she thought to herself and kept wondering what must have triggered that reaction from him at the other supermarket and how quickly he had changed mood when he got here.
“If you’re stressed or pathetic…” the words resonate in her ears again and she had to shake her head to dull the words out of her head.
“Are you ok,” the security guard asked with concern.
“Yes, I’m good. Why do you ask?” Lucy asked surprised as to why he asked her that question.
“You were shaking your head earlier.”
“Oh, that was nothing,” she replied and realised she must have shaken her head in reality thinking it’s only happened in her head.
“So, are you friends with my boss?”
“No, not really, we just met today.”
“Ok, he really is a nice guy, you can’t help but be happy around him, I always long to see him because I know it will always brighten my mood, I miss him when I don’t see him for a long time and it surprises me too, you know.”
“He must be one hell of an amazing person then? Lucy asked, still shocked on the show of love and affection from this employee to his boss and she could see the sincerity in his eyes.
“The best there is. I’ve worked in five different organisations, and he’s the best of the bunch, sometimes when he is inside, you won’t know the difference between the boss and the employees.”
“Wow, that’s really nice, I saw him give you some cash earlier, does he always do that?” Lucy couldn’t help but ask and even she was surprised as to why she asked the question.
“Of course, that is always the icing on the cake. He never leaves without putting something in all our pockets,” the security guard said beaming with smiles.
“You mean, he not only gives you but all the other employees?”
“Every single person, that’s why I always wish he comes over, cos I know I’m not going home empty-handed whenever he does. Sometimes, I wonder if he knows my salary with the way he gives me money.”
“Why do you say that?” Lucy asked, dreading what he meant by that.
“Because he sometimes gives me more than my monthly salary.”
“That’s amazing. Well, thanks for your time,” Lucy dipped her hand into her purse and brought out some money and gave it to the security guard.
“No thanks, you don’t have to give me anything. It will look like you bought that info I gave you,” said the guard with concern on his face.
Though that shocked her, she realised he might be feeling bad for talking about his boss to a total stranger.
“No, not at all, I’m giving you this just because I enjoyed talking to you and I appreciate you as a person. I’ve pretty much had a rough and bad day but you’ve helped lighten it up and I don’t want you to feel bad at all. I really love the way you carry yourself and I can’t help but wonder why you are working as a security guard, you look like a graduate to me.”
Receiving the money from her, the security guard thanked her, “Yes I’m a graduate, but you know we have to manage any situation we find ourselves in life.”
“Does your boss know you’re a graduate?
“Sure, he knows.”
“And he didn’t do anything about it? He can at least get you a position inside the supermarket instead of working out here as security,” Lucy asked feeling a little irritated that a generous person like that couldn’t use the Intelligence of such a person better.
“You know, the funniest part is that for almost six months now he has been telling me to think of a business I can start and he will sponsor me.”
“Oh wow, why then have you not started yet or you don’t have anything in mind?
“I actually do for a while now, I just haven’t told him yet.”
“Why?” Lucy asked confused and angry at herself for judging his boss before probing further.
“Damn, I need to work on my first impression of people.”
“It’s stupid you know, but I just feel like starting my own business now will make me miss all the fun moments I use to have with my boss,” he replied laughing.
And Lucy couldn’t help but notice how handsome he looked when he laughed.
“I haven’t seen a more handsome guy in a security uniform,” she taught to herself.
“But you can’t continue working as security all your life because you love your boss and even if you start your own business your boss will always visit you if he loves you too.”
“I know and it’s funny cos he said those exact words and he has stressed it on me today, so no time to delay any more.”
“He really is an amazing person then, you lucky to have such a boss.”
“Sincerely, he’s more like a brother and I feel lucky to have known him. I don’t know how life would have been without him.”
“Well lucky you then, I need to go now. It was fun talking to you, thanks a lot, I’m Lucy by the way”.
“You’re welcome, I’m Dan and it was nice talking to you too”.
They exchanged contacts and Lucy left for her car.
Once inside the car and driving home, Lucy couldn’t help but feel like she must have triggered something inside the young man to make him react the way he did. She processed all the info she has heard from Daniel and from what she had seen, that the guy wasn’t someone who will hurt another person intentionally.
“I need to find him and apologize to him…Damn Lucy, what is wrong with you? It’s been three years and you still haven’t gotten over it. Must you always hurt others because of that one thing?” she screamed out her frustrations.
“If you are stressed out or pathetic…”
God, those words. They cut her like nothing else had. But he wasn’t wrong after all and she didn’t notice when a tear dropped from her eyes.
