A STREET ROMANCE
Months past, Felix finds a place to hide from all the chaos which has been occurring since he committed the crime. A friend calls to inform him of the recent update.
” Yo chale, I was walking past the woman me and the boys went to mess up, heard the folks speaking to the cops, two of them were mentioning your name, the cops will be on our asses soon, man”, one of Felix’s friends called him on his worn-out cell phone.
” Alright alright..sit tight at where you are…I’ll figure out something and call you back..keep your head down ” he blurted out in an authoritative tone and hanged up
Felix, now informed that the police were on a mission for his arrest as one of the prime suspects, after they questioned some of the people in the compound who witnessed the incident. Had to come up with a plan as soon as possible.
Rumours were spreading wide about his involvement in the assault of Mrs Mensa.
He could not leave town without having to see his child.
He either had a choice to turn himself in or leave town and probably never come back.
” Herh….! E hard o.. why won’t people just mind demma business koraa ah!?, this woman sef if she nor come cross me like this would have never happened…” Felix was thinking out loud, with some level of remorse while sitting behind his friend’s apartment.
Where he is currently in hiding from the ongoing issue.
His friend, Kwaw was also a street hustler but has been fortunate enough to get a self contain some kilometres away from Felix’s place .
” ah .. na you still ponder about the old lady? Massa she shouldn’t have messed with your kid in the first place .. you did what you had to do bro lef am!”….. Kwaw said as he tapped Felix on the back trying to sugarcoat his words in support of his friend.
” Come on Dude, I may have done it but I feel remorseful about the whole thing, especially with the lady been hospitalized…”, Felix spoke as he turned to look at his friend.
” You are the only person I can trust around here, this is my decision ..I want to turn my self in unless…..”.
” Unless what huh…..unless what Felix ?”………. Kwaw retorted in immediate disagreement.
” You think this is a joke? It is serious oh ma guy. If you turn yourself in..these people will drag your ass behind bars, better run for your freedom while you can, besides your Lisa already thinks you are incapable…” he continued.
His words were a little harsh but there was a tad bit of honesty in his statement. But Felix would not pay attention to that one.
” That’s her thought man, I’ll do what I got to do… now do me a favour and trust me to do the right thing okay?…” Felix chipped in.
” I’ll have to go to Accra to go get some things…when I’m back we will talk,” he said handing Kwaw his key, standing up to go and prepare for his journey.

Mrs Mensa, is still in the process of recovery, while the case remains under investigation. Lisa, nearing her labour period was still asked to come to the station for further questioning.
” Listen, you need to work with me here…look at me !”..the detective said with order echoing in his voice.
He pulled out a random photograph of Felix, she was shaken a little by the “trick” the detective pulled out of nowhere.
He continued to lament as he pushed the picture towards Lisa,” You see this guy, he is responsible for the pregnancy right?!…..per our investigations he is one of the prime suspects of this case and you young woman, is wasting my f****n time, damn!”. Smashing his hands on the table before leaving the room. Lisa was confused and scared by the actions of the detective.
” You better give me something girl !!”..he continued to say to Lisa in a calm yet masculine tone as he was led out by his colleague detective.
After a few minutes of silence, the other detective came back with a bottle of water for the young mother-to-be.
” We want to give you an opportunity here Mavis, but you will have to help us help you access this opportunity of yours okay?”….. he looked directly into Lisa’s eyes, it got her feeling uncomfortable but it was working for the cop.
She was given two choices, to give up the name of the person they were looking for if she wanted a life for her unborn child and herself or shut up about it and be charged with being an accomplice of Mrs Mensa’s assailants.
Which will put her on remand for a year before she is taken to court.
Lisa got out of the station confused, like an English professor trying to read a Chinese text. ” Why is this happening lord?….please if you are listening, hear me out and let Felix have a change of heart because this is getting way too much for me!”… she sobbed in her head till tears began to run down her cheeks.
On her way home, she called Felix’s phone and there was no answer.
She called again and it went through..” where have you been?”..she queried Felix on the phone.
” Been busy with work, how are you and the baby doing?”.. asking with a big lump of concern in his throat.
” I think you should leave town”… she dogged the casual question thrown by him.
” I should what ?”… he asked surprisingly, ” I’ll be damned to see my kid go to an orphanage while I’m still alive”.
” Stop with that bullshit …. do you know what it feels like to be totally unprepared for this?”…. anger and strings were of pain all over her face as she spoke……” look, I don’t mind if you decide on whatever, but please for sanity sake, please leave town, we will figure out how you will see the child after birth”. She hanged up, ending the conversation before saying anything out of context.
Felix called her back but she wouldn’t budge answering.

The case was probed further, Mavis was approached by the elders of the church a week later, in an attempt to convince her to talk to her sister in giving up the suspect. Elder Bonti, who was the leader of the group that came to see Mavis spoke to her in a really calm voice,” I’m sure you are aware of the issue at hand, my daughter. Mrs Mensa’s assailants or at least the mastermind should be brought to justice, we had a meeting and decided to continue supporting your family, the unborn child included. Please, I employ you to talk to your sister, she will listen to you I believe that. Here is my contact, let me know of any developments, okay?”… he stood up with that statement and handed Mavis an envelope. ” It is a little something Mrs Mensa asked us to give to you. This is not an incentive to buy your honesty….that needs to come from you if you want to “….. he smiled and left Mavis to her thoughts.
” This could well be a breakthrough for us and Lisa just wants to mess this up !”… she thought to herself.
Mavis deep inside, knew the right thing to do was to convince her sister to adhere to what the elders were saying…she personally wouldn’t budge, but for the sake of the innocent child and the support she might not be able to offer to it will make her feel some way.
She then took the initiative in convincing Liza, a few days later.
