A ChrisEffe Thriller
CHAPTER 16
Effe sighed and looked at her sisters.
Eyram was staring at her, horrified, whilst Baaba seemed to be angry.
“What do you think you’re doing, Effe?” Eyram asked softly. “Standing Steve up for Chris?”
“Yes, apparently!” Baaba said with a sneer. “Jesus, Effe! What’s gotten into you? You have Mom and Dad worried, if I should tell you! You’re handling this Chris issue all wrong!”
Effe stood up, picked up her little bag and her car keys, then she went to the sound player, ejected the CD and put it in her bag, then she headed for the door without speaking.
She paused, however, and looked at them with a pensive expression.
“I love Chris, and you two know it,” she said gently. “You’re my sisters, and you should respect what I want. Please, support me if you can, but if that is not possible, stop putting me down. I’m having dinner with Mavis. See you soon.”
Without another word, she went out.

Steve Hollison, impeccably dressed for the night, dropped his phone on the couch after his call to Effe, and then he screamed and kicked savagely at the couch.
“What the fuck do you see in that beast, Effe?” he said loudly, and then he walked to a well-stocked bar at the far end of the living room and poured himself whisky on the rocks.
He took a sip and walked with a stiff gait back to the living room as his heart raced with an alien feeling he thought was long gone.
Steve knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Effe had stood him up simply because she was going to be with that bastard, Chris Bawa.

Steve could still feel the soreness in his guts where Chris had struck him. He had heard tales since then from Baaba and Eyram, about how strong Chris was as a result of his martial arts practice, and it only served to drive Steve’s hatred of that bastard higher.
Of course, Steve had not really been keen about meeting Effe from the very onset even though his father kept on nagging, but since the day he beheld the exquisite beauty of the lady, he had not had a moment’s peaceful sleep. There was something about Effe that simply set his heart boiling whenever memories of her flooded his head – memories that were becoming disturbingly too frequent and couldn’t be ignored any longer.
He could not say it was complete love, per se, since that would be akin to going a bit extreme, but indeed he was beginning to feel something very strong for Effe that could easily become unconditional love.
One thing was clear to him though, without doubt, absolutely unequivocal: he would love to have her as a life partner, and yes, he wanted to marry her. She had touched that ancient feeling deep down in his soul, making him feel the urge to become a husband and to be called a father by a bunch of beautiful and happy children from the unification of their reproductive cells.
They had hit it off so completely, and Steve was amazed at how they seemed to enjoy the same things in life, and just how compatible they seem. He was ready to face it and admit that he had the hots for Effe, and if he could make her his, she was a girl he could grow to love totally.
For eternity.
With Effe, he could finally put the ghost of Pamela into the grave, and move on to a more contented existence. Pamela, a woman he had loved with every little bit of his heart and soul for eight years, and who had suddenly told him she was in love with someone else, a business friend of her father’s, and wanted out of the relationship.
Steve had been shattered, and for a year his life had been a dark cycle of work, booze, and sex. Sex with prostitutes and casual acquaintances because he had been scared to let any woman near. Pamela had come to Ghana to join the man she was supposedly in love with.
It had torn Steve’s heart to shreds.
Prior to the breakup, Pam had started coming to Ghana quite frequently, presumably to run business errands for her rich father, but Steve now knew better: she had simply been cheating on him with her father’s young business partner.
Steve had stayed for a year in the States just to get over her, but it had almost been impossible, and finally, he had decided to come to Ghana to join his father and take up the family’s companies. Maybe it had just been an unconscious effort to be near Pamela, a final overture to see if indeed she would really marry the young man.
He had called her a few times when he arrived, just to chat, and the pain had been excruciating each time because, apparently, she had moved on.
The ‘Dinner On A Cruise Ship’ had actually been organized by Pamela’s father as a business dinner, and Steve’s company had received an invitation. He had decided to convince Effe to attend it with him.
He had not told Effe that Pamela was also on the ship, and he had intentionally given all his attention to Effe.
The greatest part of the evening had been the thunderous and stunned look on Pamela’s face when she saw how Steve related to Effe. During the archery competition – which he had won – it had given him the greatest thrill to put the diamond chain around Effe’s neck.
When she had turned and hugged him, and he had tenderly kissed her on her right cheek, he had surreptitiously glanced across her shoulder and seen the sudden flash of pain and jealousy on Pamela’s face.
Later, when he was speaking to a potential Australian client, he had noticed Pamela moving close to Effe and her sisters, and he had seen Pam taking a close look at Effe.
It had given Steve the chance to compare the two women, and it had struck him fiercely that in beauty, grace, charm and sheer allure, Effe beat Pamela by a mile! It had made Steve Hollison face the sudden realization that maybe, just maybe, he had not been able to move on because he had really not found any woman who had been able to match Pamela’s almost godly stature in his heart.
But now, here was Effe, as precious as a glittering diamond in the sky, dwarfing Pamela in every department of the game!
And since then, Pamela had been calling him, and even tried to set up a friendly date for ‘old times sake, y’know, just to brush over the pain, Stevie dear’ as she put it. It had thrilled Steve to the high kingdoms, and it had given him the greatest pride in replying that he was tied up for a bit and that as soon as he was free he would definitely pick up on her offer.
His decision to go with Effe, and win her at all costs, had been made then when he was finally able to reject a direct reconciliatory offer of sorts from Pamela.
Now, even though he had known Effe for just a tap of time, he was not really sure he wasn’t even totally in love with her, a matter of love at first sight, that mysterious phenomenon that he had always rubbished.
But not now, no, not when a second did not pass without thoughts of Effe flitting across his mind. It was more than a physical need. Effe was a blazing beauty with an incredible physical formation that would give any man worth his juice a mighty dose of desire and lust. That aside, she was the sort of woman any man would be proud to own and flaunt as a lifetime partner.
It was all possible, and he could have her if only the Chris Bawa aspect of her life could be neutralized. That was the problem narrowed down, and there was a solution to every problem.
The solution was simple…
Remove Chris Bawa from Effe’s life by any means necessary, fair or foul!
Chris could not be murdered, that was clear and sensible. The only thing that would work was to make Effe hate Chris with passion, and with the sort of antagonism existing between Chris and Effe’s parents, it would be easy enough to swing the tide and make Effe bitter toward the guy by using good strategies adopted at precise and calculated moments.
Steve took another pull at his drink, set the glass down, and then he picked up his phone again, flipped through the recent contacts list, and then called Baaba.
“Hello, Stevie!” Baaba said, excited. “Awww, I know why you called. That crazy Effe stood you up, right? Oh, before I forget, thanks for the one thousand cedis you sent me for credit, okay?”
“You’re always welcome, Babs, dear,” Steve said, forcing out his charming little laugh. “But remember, you’ll always have more if you help me win Effe’s love.”
“You love her, Stevie?” Baaba asked levelly. “I don’t want anyone coming to break her heart, okay? I detest the fact that she’s with Chris and we would all be happy if she leaves him, but I don’t want her hurt. If your interest is only to get between her legs then forget it, I’m not interested.”
Steve was silent for just a few seconds, and then he spoke with deadly earnest.
“Effe is the girl I’ve been waiting for all my life, Baaba. I need her. I want to marry her. Yes, it sounds crazy, but I do love her and I need her to be my wife.”
“Then you have a friend in me, and the rest of the family, Stevie,” Baaba said happily. “All of us want her to leave Chris. If you ever need anything, just ask me, and I’ll gladly help.”
“That’s great, Babs,” Steve said. “She’s seeing Chris tonight, isn’t she?”
“Well, she said she’s going to her friend’s place,” Baaba said. “Atswei Mavis, that’s her bestie’s name. But the thing is that Mavis favours Chris, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris shows up there too.”
Steve felt a great painful lurch to his heart. Yes, he had suspected Effe was going to see Chris, but to have it confirmed to him so bluntly filled him with so much pain that it took him by surprise.
“I see,” he said morosely. “Well, thanks, Baaba. And where does this Mavis Atwetwe or whatever live?”
“Atswei!” Baaba said, laughing. “Are you planning to go there? I don’t think that’s a good idea, Stevie. Effe is touchy about Chris, you know. Showing up there unannounced will put you in her bad books, and I don’t think you want that.”
“No, no, no, Babs, not that at all,” Stevie said quickly. “I just wanna know her usual hang-out places, you know, surprise her once in a while. But not today, not today at all.”
“Alright then, Stevie, that’s good to know,” Baaba said in a rush. “I think I have the GPS location somewhere on my phone. We had a party at Mavis’ apartment recently and we sent the location to some of our friends. Wait, I’ll send it to you.”
“Do that, Babs,” Steve said with a chuckle. “I’ll definitely send you money for more credit in the morning.”
“Ooohhh, thanks so much, Stevie!” she cooed, and Steve cut off the call.
He picked up his drink and took impatient sips, waiting for her to send him directions. Five minutes dragged by, and almost moved to ten minutes.
“Send the fucking location you bloated stupid little pussy!” Steve shouted angrily and threw the glass in his hand away fiercely. It hit the wall opposite him, missing the huge screen of the television by inches. It shattered and glass fragments rained down behind the television.
Just then his telephone dinged a WhatsApp message.
He navigated to WhatsApp and found that Baaba had sent the location.
Steve instantly navigated to his contacts and called a name saved as Twum.
The phone was picked up.
“Hello, Boss,” the gruff voice at the other end said.
“Get Abdul,” Steve said tersely. “Meet me at Beach Road, usual rendezvous. There’s a bastard we gotta beat the shit out of tonight!”
He cut the call, picked his car keys, and went out, bristling with fury and hatred for a bastard named Chris Bawa.
“It is on now, Bawa, you motherfucker!” he muttered fiercely under his breath. “I want her…and I always get what I want, asshole!”
***
Mavis Atswei Solomons, looking resplendent in a simple sea-green dress, walked toward the door when she heard the bell. She was holding a glass of fruit juice in her hand, and she quickly put it on the dining table.
She opened the door, and Chris Bawa was standing there.
He was in dark jeans, white loafers, and a short-sleeved chequered shirt. As he smiled at her, Mavis was stricken again by his incredible good looks. This young man was simply the most handsome man she had ever seen, and she wondered again for the umpteenth time how Effe could possibly take risks with such a man. His thick eyebrows and eyelashes, almost feminine, and his well-groomed moustache gave his face a beautiful appeal that always drew the second and third looks from women. His smile sent the slightly-dimpled cheeks into full lovely bloom, which elicited a response from Mavis.
It was quite evident that they were very fond of each other.
“Chris-Boy,” she murmured.
“Aunt Atswei,” he said softly, still smiling mischievously.
“Stop that nonsense, Chrissy,” she whispered and fell into his arms.
His muscular arms enveloped her, and being a whole lot taller than her, he lifted her off her feet so that her face was at par with his. Her arms went around his neck, and then laughing together, they bumped noses, and Chris carried her inside the room and kicked the door shut behind him.
She giggled, burying her face in his chest as he carried her to the comfortable chairs, and dropped her gently to the seats. They were close together, still holding each other and smiling.
“Behave yourself, Chris-Boy,” Mavis said with a giggle.
Chris released her but kept holding her hands.
“Heard you broke off with Jude,” he said softly. “How’re you holding up, Ats?”
She smiled sadly, and leaned against him with her chin on his shoulder, grateful for his strong support.
“I really don’t want to talk about him,” she said softly. “He turned out to be a really horrible guy. But I’m going to be well. Wanna eat now, or you’ll wait for Ef?”
Chris scowled.
“You didn’t tell me she would be coming,” he said, a bit coldly.
Before Mavis could answer, the doorbell rang again, and Mavis smiled.
“That must be your Angelface,” she said and reluctantly left the comfort of Chris’ arms.
She walked to the door and opened it.
Effe was standing there, a beauty of the night, complementing the handsomeness of Chris. These two suited each other so well.
“Chris here yet?” Effe asked anxiously.
