THE GOOD MAN
There comes a moment in a man’s life when he must take a decisive action that could take him to the next level in life. Kobina Ferguson felt that time was now. He had been thinking of furthering his education… like registering for that online course with the University of Cape Coast for their degree program in Business Administration.
Another reason why he felt like making a move was that his Boss had been acting hostile towards him; he had been treating him more like an enemy than the dedicated employee that he was. During his tenure as the Manager of the Paradox Nite Club, it had won the Regional Best Nite Club of the year for 3 consecutive years, and on the fourth year, they had won the Best National Nite Club award
He was in that pensive mood when he had a phone call from the CEO of the company, Mr Simbo.
“Kobina, can you come to my office right away?”

“OK Boss,” he said.
He went up the stairs to his office that was on the first floor. The office was a very large one with an L shaped table that had a large black swivel chair to match. It had a large American type fridge and a large TV that was connected to DSTV. The walls were white and the large windows had gray mini blinds on them.

Mr Simbo went straight to why he summoned him.
“I have seen that the proceeds from the Club has been dwindling, can you explain that?”
“It’s because you asked me to make our Sunday bash free for all.”
“Knew you were going to say that, but my information tells me otherwise.”

“Please sir, the Ladies Nite which is free for ladies and coupled with the Sunday free for all sexes has made the proceeds dip, as our hopes of having increased sales in terms of drinks hasn’t happened.”
“And it’s because you have been selling your own drinks on the side, haven’t you?”
Kobina was shocked at that accusation and couldn’t utter a word.
“I am warning you, if my suspicion proves to be true, you’ll see why people are afraid of me. Now go out.”
Kobina went out without a word, more determined than ever to succeed in life.

A Month Later
As had now become the norm, Aba Joan went to prepare soup for Kobina Ferguson at his single room apartment per her mother’s request when she learned that he hardly had time to cook. She knew her way around the tiny kitchenette of the small but neat Studio apartment. She even had her own key so as soon as she was done at the market she rushes over to cook. As Kobina knew she was going to be there on Tuesday, he had left some cash on the center table for her to buy any ingredient or meat he might not have had at that time.
She had decided to prepare palm nuts soup and was on it when a dark skinned lady wearing a short dress that revealed most of her thighs and all of her back entered without knocking.
“Can I please help you?” Joan asked her having an instant dislike for her at her obvious brash attitude.
“Who are you to ask me that?” Dzifa Gold retorted.

“Who are you to ask me that?” Dzifa Gold retorted.
“I am a family member,” Joan said gamely
“A family member?” she said rudely, “Anyway I am Dzifa, his girlfriend,” she replied rudely.
“As you can see, he’s not around. You can come back in the evening.”
“Are you by any chance sacking me?” Dzifa hissed.

“Sister, look, I am not sacking you but I don’t know you and moreover, I am busy.”
“Whatever,” Dzifa turned and left, slamming the door hard behind her.
Joan didn’t mind her. She concentrated on the food she was preparing and was almost done when Kobina walked in, sniffling at the nice aroma of the soup.
“Welcome home, Uncle Kobina.”

“Thanks Joan” he replied “what a nice aroma, I am salivating already.”
“Hahaha, the rice balls would be ready in 10 minutes,” she said.
He glanced at her in amazement noticing the loose dress she was wearing did nothing to hide the amazing shape she had…

“Nice and shapely with a beautiful adorable face,” he said under his breath.
“How was your day?” he asked, to hide the fact that he had been staring at her.
“It was ok. Your girlfriend was here.”

“My girlfriend?” he asked, confused.
“Yes, Dzifa ,” she supplied.
“Don’t mind her. She lives just around the corner.“
“I see. The way she was questioning me erh, hahaha.”

“Don’t mind her. Going to have my bath, would be right back.”
While he was having his bath, the skies darkened as a sign of an impending rainfall and as soon as he stepped out, the rains came down with a full force.
He saw that he had been served with 2 big balls of emo tuo while Joan stood by the window looking at the rains falling heavily with gusts of wind blowing.

“Let’s eat” he forced her to eat with him. He enjoyed the food so much that he had to go for an additional ball.
“I think I will leave now,” Joan said, looking at his bare chest, with the towel he had used hanging around his neck.
“You can’t go. You’ll be soaked to the bone,” he told her and right that moment lightening flashed and the accompanying thunder rumbled loudly making her scream.

Just then she had a phone call from her mother.
“Aba, is it raining in Takoradi too?”
“Yes, ma.”
“It’s raining heavily here. Can you stay there and come back tomorrow?”
“He said the same thing but I refused, knowing that you’ll be worried.”
The old lady then requested to talk to Kobina, entreating him to allow Joan to sleep over.
“Yes Ma, no problem,” he said and she ended the call.
So with everything settled, Aba Joan had no option than to accept what man and nature had proposed.

She entered the bathroom to have her bath and almost immediately, there was a heavy pounding on the main door. Kobina got up wondering who that could be at the door in such a weather. He opened the door to reveal a heavily soaked Dzifa Gold. She stepped past him into the comfort of the room.
“What are you doing here in this weather?” he demanded of her.
“I came to watch TV our light is off. Our prepaid is exhausted and I don’t want to miss my favourite series.”
“You can’t just come here at anytime you feel like,” Kobina said not hiding his anger, “the least you could have done was to call first.”

Joan came out of the bathroom wearing Kobina’s oversized T shirt to see Kobina glaring at the shivering Dzifa Gold. Dzifa stared at her in shock and with a look of disappointment, turned around to leave, but Kobina made her stay. He gave her a dry towel to dry herself and gave her the TV remote. All three of them sat down in uneasy silence waiting for the series to start in thirty minutes time. Fate took matters in its own hands and the lights went off. Dzifa hissed, annoyed and Kobina Ferguson happily gave her his raincoat and ushered her out of the room.
In about 10 minutes after Dzifa left, the lights were restored.
Joan made Kobina switch the TV back on for an Akan series she had never missed. He feeling sleepy, went to lie on the bed and was gone in a matter of minutes.
Joan, after watching till 10:00pm, switched off the TV and laid in the couch to sleep but the chilly weather made her feel cold.

She contemplated waking Kobina up to ask for a cloth but seeing him sleeping deeply, she refrained from doing so. She rather slipped into the bed after placing a pillow in the middle of the bed, and used the other end of the duvet covering Kobina to cover herself and sighed feeling the warm softness of the bed and was soon fast asleep.
