Behind the large table, the men talked. “C.mon, she’s got a pussy. That’s what matters. Ma guy. Even the women in our lives are not giving us the peace we so want.”
“Tell am again. Why, is she disrespectful?” Felix chipped in.
“No.”
“Then?…. what of last night’s sex. Has it got anything to do with that?.” Prince asked that got them laughing in Ibrahim’s face.
They didn’t fail to notice the hardness on his face after being asked that question.
“Honestly, the sex was good. You know I don’t like discussing my sexual experiences with you guys but for the sake of my sanity, I will say something brief about it.”
They nodded, ready for what he was about to spill.
“I’m the first man to break her passage.”
That statement caused the laughter to die down.
“Wait, what?. You’re saying she was a virgin?”
Recovering from the shock, they continued to pour out their opinions to him.
“Ma guy, you see. Paying that huge dowry has not gone to waste. You did not dip in a hole made by another man.”
He had had the same thought though he got no problem marrying someone who wasn’t one.
“Guys. You know it’s not about her. I honestly have no issue with the girl being in that house. Except for the fact that she’s enchanting, it’s my son I’m thinking about here.”
They nodded in unison.
“When is Eyram coming back with Saeed?” Gideon leaned back in his chair.
“Next month…You know how Eyram can get when it concerns me and another woman. I had to convince her to go along with the decision I made for Saeed’s sake.”
“That boy is the reason why I make so many risky decisions. His mother sometimes is unreasonable.”
“What have you planned to do when she comes back to Ghana?”
He sat upright in his chair over the question Felix asked. He had asked himself this question over for the past few days. His son will have to live with her mother while he lived a married life till he got what he wanted. And he hoped it would be soon.
“The same she does when she comes back. You know how I feel about her.”
Gideon nodded.
The waitress who had served them came back purposely for Alex’s attention.
“You dropped your money, sir, she said and picked it up for him, revealing some part of her thighs. The men looked on in fascination.
When she left them, they burst into laughter.
“If only she knew who she will be contending with.”
“I tell you,” Prince adds.
“My life is equal to complication…,” Felix started.
“Just recently, Ariana disrespected Liza for some unknown reason and now Lisa is against Ariana getting close to our son. Ma guys. It’s fucked up,” Felix retorted, taking a long pull of his coffee.
The group chuckled.
“You will have to cope, man. A man should not be alone by himself.”
“Yes, I agree,” Prince added after he paid a passing waitress some money.
“You don’t fancy her, do you?”
“No…” taking a deep breath he added. “It’s obvious.”
“Then cope with it…Everyone in your family knows whom your heart beats for. We all do and it will only be for a few years. It’s possible that after two years, you’ll be out.” Gideon reasoned, taking a bite of his doughnut.
“Thanks, guys. Somehow, I’m calm now.”
“Don’t let women stress you o,” they chanted in chorus while bursting into laughter.
The drive from the cafe home was a silent one. He put on music and checked the time. It read 10:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, a young girl was in the kitchen looking around to see what she could prepare for both of them. This morning, she’d woken up to an empty bed. It occurred to her that, he might have slept in another room, not having heard a thing in her room that morning.
The maid, Adisa rushed to the room as she was standing up naked.
“Good morning, madam,” she greeted rather audibly.
“Good morning,” she wasn’t used to someone attending to her and calling her a madam when she was only 16.
“Master wants me to change the sheet before he comes back.”
Mimi had no idea of the bloodstain. She turned her head and spotted a red stain on the side of the bed where Ibrahim had taken her.
“You don’t have to do that…I will change it.”
Feeling embarrassed, she offered to change it.
“Madam. You don’t have to feel shy about this. It happens to most girls. And the master has specifically told me to change it. If I let you do it, I will be in trouble.” This shut her from what she was about to say.
Adisa went over to the bed and took off the huge blue bed sheet in one swift movement. Mimi rubbed at her lower abdomen. She still felt a bit of pain after that intense sex they had. Seeing her rubbing that place, Adisa offered to buy her some medicine to ease the pain and she was left alone in their room.
She stepped into the white marble floor of the exquisite bathroom she will be sharing with Ibrahim. Staring in awe at the technology the bathroom held. She could have stayed there but it will be silly of her to do that.
She put on a flowery straight dress after a long bath. Adisa again came into their room with a tray filled with food. Good food was not hard to come by since her family was middle class.
She thankfully dismissed Adisa and pounced on the food, eating everything on the plate without a pause. The tea, bread, and egg plus the sausages were gone in minutes.
Yesterday her energy was lost on dancing at the wedding reception without having to take in anything.
After disposing off the plates, she decided to prepare something for Ibrahim to eat.
If rules were in this house, he’s got to make it known to her but for now, she wanted to do what she felt was right but a thought interrupted her proceeding. The conversation she had with Kwame last two weeks ago was knocking at her memory.
Placing her palms in his, he uttered.
“You said he was rich right?”
“That’s what they said.”
He stared at her face and the hair she had recently gone to braid on her cute head.
“If you love me and you believe that one day we will get together after this man, then you will have to steal from him….money so we can save or invest it.”
She pulled her hands away from his. Staring long and hard.
“He’s not a stupid old man. He’s a young man…you should quit that thought.”
Undisturbed he continued.
“You probably have not seen him before so how will you know. If you do this, we will get rich and…”
“Kwame please. …..ah…Do you know you’re very young? .. it will be a waste if you were taken in by the police. I will advise you to focus on your education. I’m taken now as you can see”
The disappointed look on his face seemed to fade as a smile escaped his lips.
“You promised me something.”
Rolling her eyes, she asked.
“We give a lot of promises, which one are you talking about?”
“Last year on my dad’s compound we promised we will lose our virginity to each other. Don’t you remember?”
Mimi signed heavily. They indeed made that promise. Promises were meant to be broken.
“I’m sorry, Kay. It can’t happen….it’s too risky. What if I get pregnant.”
His face was clouded in anger and bitterness.
“You want to go and lose what belongs to me to another man?”
That statement surprised her. Theirs was not real love. They didn’t kiss or touch but the nonsense he was spewing was getting on her nerves.
“Kay. I’m not yours in any way….. I never belonged to you unless you get married to me. That’s the only way.”
After pondering intensively over what she said, he finally said.
“Leave then and never show yourself to me again.”
Those were his last words before leaving her astonished.
In ample time, she lost a boyfriend, a friend, and a brother. Her life was going to change completely. From a senior high school girl to a married woman.
Except she will be having lessons outside from her new home and write the final exams which should be soon anyway. Those were the decisions her parents made on her behalf. The only question she meant to ask her parents was why they chose her.
Why did he have to choose a young girl like her when he could have lots of women bending down to do his will. She was not blind. He was a handsome man.
She could conclude based on what happened last night that he was a gentle, sweet man even though he tried hard not to touch her or say sweet things to her.
The creaking of the gate got her startled and back to reality.
The huge gates opened on their own accord as Ibrahim’s car came in.
She continued to stare till he parked the car and walked inside. Trying hard to revert her eyes from the stunning man, she picked up a utensil only to be stopped by an approaching step.
“Stop…”
She froze amidst his hold on her wrist.
“You’re not supposed to cook for me,” he retorted, taking a glance at the shapely figure.
“I will do the cooking for us today… Adisa will take over tomorrow.”
He snatched the utensil from her to pick a few vegetables from the huge multiple purpose fridge and started cutting the veggies.
“If I’m right you will start classes tomorrow right?”
She was taken aback by his action that she could only keep mute.
“Yes, please, ” she replied, after a long silence.
“Just call me Ibrahim. Or Musa. Whichever name you prefer.”
His voice sounded cold and distant but at least he was talking to her.
“Is it far from here?”
“What?”
“Your school”
“No. It’s a few walks from here.”
“Then, I don’t have to worry about getting you a driver. There are a few rules I will communicate to you during dinner. You just took over my space which I’m not all happy about.”
He looked over his shoulder.
“Won’t you sit or something?”
That got her picking up a stool to sit on.
“As I was saying… You’re Mimi right?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, Mimi… it’s will be a few rules. We don’t know each other that well and I would appreciate it if it stayed that way.”
Her head was going to burst in anger. She being young didn’t mean she was stupid or clueless. Naïve, yes, but not stupid. She kept mute as he went on.
“Do you have anything you want to ask me?”
Pondering over what she wanted to say, she asked.
“Where is your son?”
The swiftness he used in cutting the vegetables slowed. The knife almost fell out of his hand. He pressed his lips tight in an anxious manner.
“I wouldn’t want to talk about my son. Especially with you,” he said, his glare sending his message across.
She trembled in her seat. Maybe it was something he didn’t want to talk about. Maybe it hurts him to talk about it or remind him of something tragic. She thought.
“I think I will be needing those rules of yours,” she retorted rather audibly.
