BORN BAD
A ChrisEffe Thriller
CHAPTER 10
Baaba ignores the secretary and enters’ Afful’s office.
The nurse scowls darkly behind Baaba’s back, obviously annoyed at Baaba’s rudeness. She is used to it, though, and returns to filling folders.
Baaba opens the office door and closes it.
She leans against it with a half-smile on her lips.
Jonathan, who had been headed for the door, stops suddenly and looks at Baaba warily.
She does look good and sexy in her white uniform. He likes the way it hugs her ample body, and the way it clings to her hips and thighs and shows off her beautiful behind.
He smiles weakly.
“C’mon, Babs. I’m on my way to lunch!”
She speaks coldly.
“Yeah, I know. Lunch with that useless nun, isn’t it? Well, which do you prefer, an hour wasted on food and false talk, or an hour of this?”
She pulls down the zipper at the back of her dress and shrugs out of it.
She is wearing a white bra with slits down the middle of the cups, making her large nipples stand out, taut and aroused.
She is wearing a garter-belt hooked up to her sheer white stockings. She is wearing lacy panties that is so tiny that tufts of hair have sprouted around it, just like he likes it, turning him on just like she knows it will.
“Babs, don’t to this to me, not here, not now!”
She smiles demurely, leaning back against the door and spreading her legs, and then she walks towards him, past him, and grips the edge of his desk, bending forward at the waist, exposing the delicious double-mounds at her back.
Much against his will Afful feels the heat in his loins and the violent upward movement of his untrustworthy organ.
Baaba looks over her shoulder at him. She purrs lustfully.
“Come on now, Tiger… I’m all wet and dripping for you!”
With a groan of weakness Afful pulls down his zipper and takes out his erect member.
He moves up behind, and she bends further forward to accommodate him, laughing deep down with victory as he thrusts into her with fervour.
***
It is Effe’s lunch break.
She normally waits for Jonathan to join her at the canteen, and so she walks towards Aku’s consulting room; Rupert had left several minutes earlier.
It has been almost a week now since that dangerous encounter with the killer who had come to her room, and she is gradually getting over the jitters.
She has not seen that criminal again, that Chris, and to her that is good news. She doesn’t want to make his acquaintance ever again.
Aku is not at the office, and one of the nurses informs Effe that she is in the female ward area.
Effe heads for WARD 5 first because that is where Chris’ mother is, and whenever Aku visits the wards before having lunch, she had been found with that woman.
Effe is a few steps from the door when she hears Aku’s voice from inside the ward.
“What’s the matter with you, Chris? How many times do I have to tell you Effe has absolutely nothing to do with it?” she asks frantically.
Effe freezes and scowls. She pushes the partially-open door inward and enters the ward.
She sees Chris standing by the window, as usual, and Aku standing facing him, holding his upper arms.
She looks over her shoulder and sees Effe, and then she smiles and comes towards her.
Effe barely sees Aku, though.
Her eyes are on the face of the bad boy, and his look of deep fury and absolute revulsion as he looks at her cuts her to the core.
She strives to remain calm as she speaks.
“And what is he accusing me of now?”
Norvice forces an uneasy chuckle.
“You heard, right? Don’t worry. It’s nothing serious.”
But Effe is staring at Chris, and she can feel the animosity shooting off him, his look almost approaching hatred.
“Well, I demand to know. You’re accusing me of something, Chris. Are you man enough to tell me to my face?”
He moves away from the wall then, and she notices that his jaw muscles are working, grinding hard, and his eyes are like burning coals as he glares at her.
“What do you gain by taking the money meant for my mother? You want her to die? Is that what you want?”
Effe is confused as she stares at him.
“And what are you talking about?”
“I told you she has absolutely nothing to do with it, Chris! She is not that kind of woman!” Norvisi says with the beginning of anger.
“Of course, she is! It is her way of getting back at me! But I’m going to make that money, you hear, Doctor Effe? You can keep the damn money, okay? I don’t mind! I’m going to make it, okay?”
“Would you tell me what’s going on, please? Aku, what’s the meaning of this?” Effe asks, exasperated.
Aku looks warily at Effe and then sighs.
“Well, it’s about Chris’ mom. I don’t know if I told you but the cost of the heart bypass operation is pegged at thirty thousand cedis!”
Effe gasps, shocked.
She looks at Chris with sudden narrowed eyes.
“And that’s why you steal? That’s why you robbed that bank?”
“You shut the fuck up!” he says angrily. “Don’t pretend you don’t know anything about it! You told your boyfriend to keep the money, didn’t you?”
Again, Effe is taken aback by his antagonistic stance.
“You’re pathetic, Chris Bawa, or whoever you are, and I’m not going to waste another breath on you. I’m listening to you, Aku!”
“Yes, well, Chris has been able to pay twenty-five thousand cedis!”
“The thief! Isn’t that the money he stole from the van?” Effe asks with disdain.
Without another word Chris turns away and walks angrily out of the ward.
“You’re being too hard on that boy, Effe!” Norvisi says reproachfully.
Effe becomes angry.
“I don’t know why you tolerate him, Aku! That man is a criminal! He’s a dangerous thief! A damn armed-robber. He belongs in jail, and you know it!”
“I’ve told you, Effe, that if indeed I get any evidence that Chris is the thief you’re making him out to be, I’ll personally turn him over to the police! But as we speak now, I have no evidence apart from your word!”
“And it seems my word is not enough! It seems you still don’t believe me, despite being a witness to that incident in my room!”
“I do believe you, Effe, please!” Norvisi says desperately. “Secondly, as true as what you say is, we don’t have any concrete evidence that can nail him. Secondly, right now, my prime concern is this sick woman, okay? I need to do that surgery as soon as possible, and she is all that matters to me, okay? Look, I know Chris is a good man deep down. He just needs a little light in his life after the terrible time he had as a kid, from what I’ve heard from his mother so far!”
Effe turns and sits down on a chair wearily, her face a map of worry and dying fury.
“Sorry, Aku. Didn’t mean to snap at you.”
“I know, my dear, I know. It’s okay. I know just what you’re going through. Anyway, the EDEN FOUNDATION has an Emergency Fund where people with chronic heart diseases can apply for money for quick surgery. And so I applied on behalf of Chris’s mother. Fortunately, it was approved. I applied for five thousand, but the Foundation gave us ten thousand cedis.”
“So, effectively, if Chris has twenty-five thousand cedis, the money from the Emergency Fund should be able to settle the bill with a little bit of balance. Is it the balance you were talking about?”
Norvisi speaks sadly.
“No. Yesterday Doctor Afful informed me that he has paid the money back to chest. In other words, he has returned it to the Fund!”
Effe stares at Aku, shocked to her very bone.
“What?”
“My reaction exactly. I called the Chairman of the Fund to enquire, and he told me that Jonathan said the woman is a drug addict, and that her son is a drug pusher and an armed-robber. He also informed me that you even signed a petition to the Fund to withdraw the money after you recognized Chris and let the police take him!”
Effe is stunned.
“Wait, wait, wait, Aku. Petition? What petition?”
“An addendum, more like, to what Jonathan wrote. The Medical Director here also added a missive of her own and approved the refund. The Chairman told me I can appeal, but he is certain the money won’t be brought back because of the concerns raised. It is against the policy of the Fund to help criminals and people who are not in good standing with the law, or something like that.”
“So that’s why that boy was looking at me with so much hatred. He thinks I put Jon to it,” Effe says sadly.
“Yes, my dear. I tried to explain it to him but he just wouldn’t listen. He is convinced you orchestrated it all.”
Effe sits still for a while.
It is true that she has nothing but absolute disdain and dislike for Chris.
However, looking at the dear frail woman on the bed who is fighting for her life, she finds herself getting angry that Jonathan can be so heartless and return the money meant for the woman’s surgery.
That aside, she reluctantly accepts the fact that the look of hatred she had seen in Chris eyes is really bothering her, and for reasons she cannot explain, she does not want Chris Bawa to look at her like that.
“Don’t worry, Aku. Whatever it is, I’m going to let Jon reverse it. That money is coming back.”
“I’m glad, Effe. I was hoping you would say that. Thank you, Effe.”
Effe stands up.
She quickly leaves the ward and crosses to the entrance.
She then walks to the Administration block, takes the lift to the top floor, walks along the corridor to Jon’s office, and sees the secretary kneeling on the carpeted floor filing some patient folders.
Effe greets her.
“Good afternoon, Sylvia,” Effe says absent-mindedly.
The secretary quickly scampers to her feet with a look of sheer alarm on her face.
“No, Miss Kedem… please wait! The doctor has a visitor!”
But it is too late.
Effe opens the door, freezing for a moment when she hears the note of fear in the secretary’s voice.
But then she takes in the view in front of her, and then her whole world comes crashing down around her feet.
She sees that dark nurse, the one called Baaba, the one who always gives Effe very dark and terrible looks…
She is half-naked, bending over the desk…
Jon, her own Jon, her own darling, her sweetheart, her breath, her world…
Her Jon!
He is standing behind Baaba, his trousers around his feet, still wearing his boxers, but his manhood is poking out of the slit in front of the boxers, and he is wildly making love to Baaba, thrusting in and out of her with sheer lust twisting his face…
Jon looks at the door…
He is already in the throes of ecstasy as he begins to climax…
Baaba is moaning, and when her eyes meet Effe’s stunned ones, Baaba smiles triumphantly and winks…
And Effe simply passes out on the floor…
***
Elaine has been seeing Wachipa Sey for close to a week now.
He has turned out to be sweet, respectful and utterly funny, making her laugh a lot.
She usually meets him in the afternoon when Chris is busy on some of his errands for the mysterious Big Boss.
She has never been unfaithful to Chris, and never has been tempted.
If Wachipa had made a pass at her, it would probably have been the end, immediately. But he didn’t. He has just been fun to be with, to chat with, and to play with.
He gives her attention, and praises her, and buys things for her.
Of course, she couldn’t take some of the gifts he gave her to the house she shares with Chris, and so she took them to Bomofo, the village she used to live in.
And then, on the day that Chris storms out of the hospital with bitterness because Afful has refused to give the Emergency Fund donation for his mom’s surgery, Elaine is also sitting in Wachipa’s car just outside the house she shares with Chris alone.
They have just driven in from the river.
Elaine sits quietly in the air-conditioned car and thinks how good it all feels, and just how easily she can grow used to this.
There is cool song playing, and the carefully-modulated sounds dulls her senses for a while.
“So, when are you coming back from Accra, Wachipa?”
“Come with me.”
Elaine is startled.
She sits upright suddenly and looks at him.
Her eyes are dancing, and she is breathing fast.
“Don’t do this to me, please!”
“You told me your man doesn’t send you out much. So come with me, right now. Let me go and pamper you in Accra. You’ll love it, baby.”
“Can I trust you, Wachipa?” she asks unsteadily.
He half-turns and smiles at her.
He is wearing expensive clothes as usual, looking so clean and smooth and svelte! Once again Elaine is thrilled that someone so rich and cultured can find her so beautiful and irresistible.
“Trust me? Listen, Elaine, I’ve wanted you ever since I saw you. I won’t lie about that. No girl has ever affected me the way you affect me. If you’re asking me if I’ll rape you, then let me say that no, I’ll never rape you. I want you to come to me, on your own will, and make love to me!”
Elaine speaks, sounding disappointed.
“And that is all you want, isn’t it? It is my body you want. You just want to screw me.”
He laughs gently.
“Any man that doesn’t want to screw you is either impotent or out of his fucking mind! But no, it is just not for that. I want to make you mine! I want you and me to rule the world. I’m offering you a chance to be my love, my wife… now! I want to take you out of this dump and make you the queen that you are! But I don’t want to be the one to make that decision for you. Come with me to Accra, for one week. Rest your mind, think deep, and then you tell me if you still want to be the girl of a petty thief, a guy who pimps his girl to make money, or you want me to spoil you and treat you like a queen. One week, Elaine. That is all I’m asking!”
They stare at each other for a long time, and then Elaine sighs and smiles.
“Wait here!”
She gets out of the car and rushes into the room.
Several of the children around have gathered to stare at the beautiful car.
Elaine enters the room and leans against the closed door, her heart thudding with a mixture of fear and excitement.
Suddenly she is moving.
She grabs a small bag which contains panties, dresses and other essentials. Life with Chris always means that she can be on the move on the spur of the moment, and so she always has a packed bag ready.
She loves Chris.
She has loved him for a long time…
She has virtually given her life to him, sacrificed her happiness for his.
But this time she is having a different feeling.
She is beginning to realize that life can be different, and more fun, with someone else.
She doesn’t stop to brood. She slings the bag across her right shoulder and flies out of the room.
She is smiling as she races towards the car.
Wachipa is out of the car and leaning against it, his arms folded across his chest.
He smiles at her, drops his arms and laughs happily.
He moves to meet her, and then he embraces her fiercely.
“Oh, Elaine, Elaine, Elaine!” he says huskily.
“Let’s get out of here quickly!” she whispers urgently.
They break apart, still laughing, and turn towards the car.
And find Chris Bawa standing there.
His face is darker than the core of midnight.
His eyes have gone ballistic, and he is trembling as his eyes drill into Elaine.
“What’s going on here, Elly?” Chris asks wrathfully.
Elaine stares at him, tongue-tied, and then she begins to tremble, the happiness evaporating from her eyes.
Wachipa sees the sudden change in her, and he steps forward with a scowl on his face.
Wachipa speaks icily.
“You must be Chris. Listen, pal –”
It is as far as he gets.
Chris slams a fist into his stomach with such force that it propels Wachipa back and slams him into the side of his car.
Wachipa collapses like an empty sack.
Elaine screams and rushes to Wachipa’s side.
Her fear and trepidation are gone.
She cradles Wachipa’s head as he moans with pain, with trace of blood running down the edge of his lips.
“Oh, Chipa, Chipa! Are you okay? Please, please, I’m so sorry! Please say something, Chipa!”
Chris is standing over them, and his face is filled with deadly emotions.
“Get up and get inside the house, Elly!”
Elaine loses her mind then.
She gets to her feet and faces him, face defiant and filled with fire.
“Damn you, Chris! What do you take me for? Your damn slave? You’re allowed to have female friends and fuck them, in the name of raising money for your mother! But I can’t have a friend? I can’t be seen with any man? Damn you, Chris! This is the last straw!”
“Have you slept with that fool?” Chris asks angrily.
Elaine slaps him across the face, hard, and then pummels his chest with her fists.
“You bastard! Do you think I’m like you? The day I’m unfaithful to you is the day we end this relationship! You’ve had me for how long? When do you want to honour me by marrying me? Do you think I’ll be like this forever?”
Wachipa is moaning, and he tries to get to his feet.
He holds the handle of the car and pulls himself up.
He feels great pain in his stomach, and so he stands bent almost double and swaying, causing the onlookers to laugh.
He begins to move towards the driver’s side of the car, his eyes suddenly filled with fear and panic as he looks at Chris.
Chris Bawa turns to Wachipa, and the man quickly raises his hands in supplication.
“Come on, dude! Don’t hit me again, please, please!” Wachipa says fearfully.
Elaine rounds on Chris, blocking his path.
“I swear to God, Chris, if you hit him again it’s over between us!”
The fear hits Chris then.
The fury slowly dissipates and he stares at Elaine with absolute fear, and his handsome face breaks down into lines of remorse.
“Listen, baby, I’m sorry, okay? Yes, I’ve treated you bad, but Mama’s case is done. I’ve not been unfaithful to you since my time with that woman at the bank. I beg of you, Elly, I’m sorry. Come with me, baby. I’ll marry you today, tomorrow, any day you want, but please, don’t leave me!”
Tears suddenly shine in Elaine’s eyes.
“I’m sorry, Chris, I’m really sorry. But I need some time, some space, to clear my head!”
“Clear your head? Clear your head you said? Clear your head of what exactly, Elly? Surely you still love me?”
“I don’t know, Chris! I don’t fucking know, okay? I’m confused!”
Wachipa has now managed to get behind the wheel of the car, and inserts the key into the ignition, starts up and looks longingly at Elaine.
More than ever he wants her now.
He loves her!
She is simply quite irresistible, and although Wachipa is afraid of her violent and totally crass idiot of a boyfriend, he simply craves for her to come with him.
“Confused? Confused about what? You love me, don’t you?”
Elaine is now weeping.
“I don’t know anymore, Chris, please. I don’t know!”
Chris lips begin to tremble.
“What’re you trying to say, Elly? You love that guy? Is it because of –”
Elaine interrupts angrily.
“It is not because of anything, Chris! He’s a caring man! He gives me attention! Now I don’t know whether I love you, or I love him! I need time to decide, and choose!”
Chris suddenly explodes bitterly.
“Goddamn it, Elly! Love is not about decisions, about choosing! You don’t decide to love somebody, or choose to love somebody! It is there or not! We’ve been through shit together, Elly! But I promise you I’ve changed! I love you, baby! I can’t live without you! If you leave, you’ll break my heart! Please, please, please stay, Elly! I beg of you!”
“I’m sorry, Chris-Love! I’m very sorry! When I take a decision, I’ll let you know!”
“Come on, Elaine! You can’t throw this love away just like this. Let’s go find a pastor! I’ll marry you today, right now, if you want! Don’t hurt me, Elly!”
She shakes her head, opens the car door, sits in and begins to weep.
“Get me out of here, Chipa!”
Wachipa almost shouts with elation as he reverses the car, executes a fast U-turn and speeds away.
