Chronicles of the Stranger
Chronicle Title:
BROKEN VOWS
Episode 7
Yaw Kuntu sat for a long time in deep thought, and then he leaned forward and looked at the two of them.
YAW KUNTU
You’re both right, of course. After meeting A.T. I’ve come to the realization that I’ve never stopped loving her. I do need her in my life. However, I’m heavily in debts, mother. I owe a lot of money to a lot of people. My salary can’t cover that. Kwansema inherited her father’s companies, and all the money I’ve been spending belong to her.
Â
If I divorce her, I’ll get nothing, because that money is in trust and doesn’t belong to her directly, and no court can touch it. We would all live in abject poverty if I divorce her now. It is her money that we’ve been enjoying all this while, mother.
Madam Nyinaa sat still, frozen!
She had never known, even at the times she had been very wicked to her daughter-in-law, that everything in fact belonged to Kwansema!
The old woman is shattered!
She stares at her son with abject misery.
MADAM NYINAA
(shocked)
Your wife owns… your house?
YAW KUNTU
(nodding)
The houses, the cars, the money, everything, mother. She was even the one that gave me money to buy the new house I plan to move you into, and it is still in her name. If I divorce her now, I would be penniless.
Â
Well, I wish you could’ve seen the look on Madam Nyinaa’s face, that old ruffian!
She was shocked to her bones. Her mind’s eye played back all the atrocities she had committed against her daughter-in-law, and suddenly she could not utter a word!
Later, however, when Yaw Kuntu and Adwoa Timtim had made their mad animal love again, and they were lying spent in an upstairs room of the family house reserved for him and Kwansema, the devil moved in with another direction that was going to affect Kwansema’s life really badly.
Adwoa Timtim, probably naked and touching Yaw Kuntu all over, kissed his ear gently and whispered.
ADWOA TIMTIM
(coyly)
So what happens if your wife dies, my love?
Yaw Kuntu stiffened, and turned to look at the lady he craved.
Â
YAW KUNTU
(carefully)
What are you trying to say, A.T?
Adwoa Timtim grabbed his manhood and flicked her hand expertly around it, slowly arousing him again.
ADWOA TIMTIM
(whispering)
Yes, my love, you heard me! You and that barren waste of a woman have no child! What happens if she were to die right now, of natural causes?
YAW KUNTU
Twenty percent of all her Estate would pass to her father’s family members. Ten percent would pass to her mother’s family, and ten percent would go to her father’s Foundation. Ten percent would go to selected charities. Fifty percent would be mine.
Â
Adwoa Timtim climbed on top of him, running her fingers down his chest as she teased the top of his manhood with her evil butt.
ADWOA TIMTIM
Fifty percent is a lot of money!
YAW KUNTU
(heart beating fast)
A lot of money, yes, my love! We can live on it grandly for the rest of our natural lives!
It was quite obvious that Yaw Kuntu was loving the crazy twist of Adwoa Timtim’s evil mind.
Adwoa lowered herself gently down on his erection.
As she began to ride him fiercely with passion, she spoke murder!
Â
ADWOA TIMTIM
Let me tell you a secret, my love! My first husband was beating me, driving me mad, raping me, being so mean to me. He wouldn’t give me a divorce! He was an influential man in the country, and my father couldn’t do anything to hurt him.
Â
Finally, when he almost killed me, my father visited me in hospital and gave me medicine, a very lethal poison! I put just three drops in my husband’s food, and it froze his heart, and when he died the drug never showed up in an autopsy. The Coroner’s report was death by cardiac arrest!
Yaw Kuntu was lost now!
He gripped her waist and thrust into her fiercely, very excited!
The thought of Kwansema dead, and him getting all that money had never crossed his mind.
But now he thought of it!
He would have money!
And he would be a millionaire, and have Adwoa Timtim, and raise a family!
He could live again!
Â
He exploded inside Adwoa with grunts of excitement.
Panting, he kissed Adwoa’s nipple and looked into her crafty eyes.
YAW KUNTU
And you have more of this little medicine your father gave you?
ADWOA TIMTIM
I do, my love.
YAW KUNTU
We don’t have any option, do we?
Adwoa Timtim kisses him hard.
ADWOA TIMTIM
We can rule the world, my love. We can have the happiness we lost, darling! All that can be possible…
Â
YAW KUNTU
If my wife were to die…
ADWOA TIMTIM
You must kill her, darling!
Location: DIVORCE COURT
The stranger drinks the last drop of water and looks for a place to put the empty plastic bottle.
NAA SHORMEI
(quickly)
Here, give it to me. I’ll dispose of it later.
THE STRANGER
(handing her the bottle)
Bless you, girl. Nice to see young ladies with manners for a change.
Â
They are looking at him as his kind eyes swivel to where their families are seated.
Afia Agyeibea is fidgeting as she looks at the stranger, and it takes all her will not to look in the direction of her husband who suddenly appears subdued.
AFIA
Hello, sir?
The stranger looks at her with querying eyebrows.
THE STRANGER
Yes, at your service, ma’am.
AFIA
What’s your name? Now I want to know your name, please.
Â
THE STRANGER
Ah, you do now, don’t you? I want us to do proper introductions, but alas, it seems that your time for going inside and getting your divorce is here.
The three listeners look up at the main doors of the divorce court.
People are now coming out, an indication that the next case to be called will be theirs.
Afia looks desperately at the elderly man.
She can see that already her parents and Takyi’s mother, and the other relatives are heading towards the courtroom.
Adobea is running towards them.
She takes the stranger’s hands and looks deeply into his eyes, and her lips tremble with the depths of her pain.
Episode 8
ADOBEA
Oh, it didn’t work, did it? You were not able to convince them not to divorce! God didn’t listen to my prayer, did He?
The kind-faced man buzzes Adobea on the cheek quite affectionately and smiles at her.
THE STRANGER
(gently)
My dear, the God we serve ALWAYS answers the prayers of the righteous, especially if they are adorable young girls like you!
The family members are beckoning to them to come inside.
Reluctantly Takyi got to his feet, and he puts a grateful hand on the man’s shoulder.
TAKYI
I thank you so much for sharing this story with me. Listen, I really want to know what happened next.
NAA SHORMEI
(sighing)
Same here. I really want to know.
AFIA
(unsteadily)
Do you know something, sir? I would’ve loved to hear the rest of the story before…before…
Â
THE STRANGER
(laughing)
Hahahaha! I can see it has at least touched something in you. That’s good. Don’t worry, go and get your divorce. I would be here mopping the whole place down, so you would see me here when you come back. I’ll tell you what happened next!
AFIA
(anxiously)
Oh, please, please, did Kwansema die? At least tell me that! I want to know!
THE STRANGER
(smiling)
Go on, Lady. I’ll be here waiting!
He stands up abruptly, takes his mop and begins to clean the floor again.
Afia looks at him, very frustrated.
AFIA
What is this, sir? Why are you doing this? At least tell me whether she lived or died!
Â
NAA SHORMEI
Come on, Afia, please. You don’t want to be late. The judge wouldn’t take kindly to that. We need to go!
They all troop into the courtroom.
They all sit down, and the tension is almost unbearable for Takyi.
A Bailiff comes out and picks up a microphone and looks down at them.
BAILIFF
The Honourable Judge Quaicoe wishes to inform you that she has been called to an urgent meeting. She begs your indulgence that she will be with you in not more than forty-five minutes, Ladies and Gentlemen. Seating therefore resumes at exactly two o’clock. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Â
NAA SHORMEI
(excitedly)
Yes, yes! That’s good. I don’t know about you, Afia, but I want to hear out that story!
For the first time in many months Afia smiles, and then she stands up and goes round the table.
Her eyes meet the sad ones of Takyi.
She stops near him and gestures towards the door with her head.
AFIA
We’re going out to see that old man. Coming?
Â
Takyi stands up, and he gives a little smile.
TAKYI
(a little confused)
Yes, yes, I’m coming, of course.
He follows Afia, and as they walk towards the entrance he reaches out, unconsciously, to take her hand, but Afia jerks her hand away and quickens her steps.
Madam Amoaba, Afia’s mother, looks puzzled.
MADAM AMOABA
Ah. What’s going on?
Adobea speaks excitedly.
ADOBEA
Oh, I think God wants me to pray harder. Come on, Grandma, pray with me, please.
Â
When Afia, Takyi and Naa emerge from within the courtroom they look around anxiously.
They find the stranger sitting where they had left him.
He has three apples in a bowl of water by his side, and he is eating a fourth.
Afia sits down by his side now, and Takyi sits where the bowl is. Naa Shormei sits beside Takyi.
The man smiles with some hidden mirth, and he does not look much surprised to see them.
AFIA
Now, sir, tell us your name, and please end the story. We have less than forty minutes!
The man nods, chuckles, and does not mind them until he has finished eating the apple in his hand.
He drops the pith inside the bowl and wipes his hands with the small towel around his neck.
NAA SHORMEI
(chuckling)
You can be very infuriating, sir!
Â
THE STRANGER
Hahahahaaa! I know, dear, I know. Well, where were we? Aha, Yaw Kuntu, that infidel, has agreed to Adwoa Timtim’s evil plan to murder his lovely wife Kwansema…
Location: THE KUNTU RESIDENCE
Kwansema was probably the happiest woman alive when Yaw Kuntu returned from Takoradi and apologized to her for his recent horrible behaviour.
He put it down to the influence of his mother, and asked for forgiveness. Kwansema, that great Christian, had a heart of gold. She forgave her husband completely.
It was probably the best month of their marriage.
Â
Yaw went to church with her, took her out, played with her, laughed with her and made sweet love to her.
He took a week off work, that snake of a man, and spent it devoted to her. He even agreed finally to her suggestion that they should adopt a son from the orphanage.
They went to the orphanage for the initial processes.
Kwansema was bursting with happiness. She had never been happier.
Well, let us jump forward now.
Finally, the day came when Yaw Kuntu had to put his terrible plan into effect.
It was a weekend where he was supposed to be chairing a symposium for senior officers of his company, which was taking place at Akosombo.
Â
Yaw Kuntu, who had received the terrible poison from Adwoa Timtim, took it home that evening.
He took Kwansema to dinner, and when they came home she packed his travelling bags for him, as usual, and then they took a shower together and made sweet love!
The following day he was supposed to leave in the late afternoon.
It was a Saturday; Kwansema usually worked out for about an hour in their gym every Saturday.
She loved jollof rice a lot, and if there was one food Yaw Kuntu knew how to prepare, it was jollof rice.
Whilst his wife was in the gym he prepared some jollof, putting in the best of ingredients. He took his bath afterwards and by the time Kwansema came in, he was ready to leave for the symposium.
Â
He poured some natural orange juice for her, and then he dished out her bowl of jollof, and took the deadly potion from his pocket.
Three drops.
Just three drops would kill Kwansema!
Yaw Kuntu measured three drops of the deadly poison into Kwansema’s food whilst the food was still hot and smelling nice.
There!
He had done it!
Kwansema, that poor woman, was a goner!
Episode 9
Yaw Kuntu’s bags were already in the car and he told her to eat whilst he let himself out.
Kwansema hugged him, and there were tears in her eyes.
KWANSEMA
(tremulously)
Oh, my sweet, dearest love! These past few weeks have been my most joyous! I love you, Yaw!
Yaw Kuntu hugged her tightly and kissed her passionately and ardently.
Â
YAW KUNTU
(tenderly)
My precious Princess! I love you too much. Can’t wait to come back and finalize our adoption process!
They kissed again, and then she saw him to the car.
He drove out, and then wound down the window and looked at her.
KWANSEMA
(waving)
Drive carefully, my love. And come back soon.
Â
YAW KUNTU
Will see you sooner than you think, my love. Don’t let your food get cold!
KWANSEMA
(smiling)
Hm. The way I’m hungry! I’m going to discipline that food immediately!
He drove off, blowing her a kiss, and with a huge smile on his face.
She used the remote to close the gates and ran inside to finish off the jollof rice cooked with the loving hands of the love of her life!
And so Yaw Kuntu drove off.
He stopped once to fill up on petrol, and as he moved out of the filing station he stopped the car along the edge of the road.
He was suddenly sweating as the magnitude of what he had done hit him!
It took his breath of away, he had just murdered his wife!
He was shivering, and he felt a sharp pain in his heart.
Â
Just then his phone rang.
He picks the call.
ADWOA TIMTIM
(coldly)
My love! How did it go?
YAW KUNTU
(trembling)
It is done. Just left the house.
Â
ADWOA TIMTIM
Well done, my love. You will come back to her dead body. Be brave, and don’t be afraid. I’m with you all the way, love!
YAW KUNTU
I’m suddenly scared, my love.
ADWOA TIMTIM
I know you would be, but remember, you’re doing it to give us a chance, to give your mother a chance, and to live happily ever after. I’ll be waiting for you, dear. Be bold. I love you so much.
YAW KUNTU
Yes, yes, I’ll be with you on Monday night. I love you harrrrrd!
Â
ADWOA TIMTIM
Okay, my love. I’m with my Uncle Ato, the one I said I would take you to meet this week. I’ll check into our usual hotel and wait for you.
YAW KUNTU
Yes, my love.
ADWOA TIMTIM
Love you so much, Yaw.
YAW KUNTU
Love you too, Precious!
Yaw Kuntu cut off the call, sighed heavily, and drove to Akosombo.
He checked into his hotel, and went to the conference centre for the opening ceremony.
Â
He got back to the hotel very late and checked his phone.
There was no missed call from Kwansema, and he breathed with a mixture of elation and sadness.
He was elated because he knew he was going to be a very rich man.
He was sad because Kwansema would have called him a long time ago to check if he had arrived…. had she been alive!
Her failure to call confirmed that she was indeed dead, and he was a widower!
He switched off his phone, overcome with a rare moment of grief.
And, in his moment of darkness, he got drunk, and slept like a log.
Â
He forced himself to get through the next couple of days.
The symposium ended on Monday afternoon, and Yaw Kuntu called Adwoa’s number; he couldn’t reach her, and left a voice mail on her phone that he was on his way back to Accra since they had planned to spend Monday night together before he arrived home on Tuesday morning.
And then he drove to their usual hideout, a plush resort within the Cantonments vicinity.
He was informed that she left the hotel on Saturday morning not long after she checked in, in the company of a man, and had not been seen since.
Yaw Kuntu was getting worried and madly jealous now.
Â
Adwoa with a man? Left with him and hadn’t returned? What did it all mean?
Or was that man the mysterious Uncle Ato?
Well, he went to the room to wait for her. He took a shower, and had just returned from the bathroom when his phone rang.
He picked the call.
YAW KUNTU
Yeah, hello?
FEMALE VOICE
Hello, good evening sir.
YAW KUNTU
Good evening.
Â
FEMALE VOICE
Am I speaking to Mr. Yaw Kuntu, please?
YAW KUNTU
Yes, you are. Who’s this please?
FEMALE VOICE
Sorry, sir. I’m calling from the Eden Hospital. We have been trying to reach you since Saturday. Your wife came on admission and she gave us your number. We’ve been trying to get to you but haven’t been able to get through to you. Your phone was off.
Yaw Kuntu’s heart was hammering so hard that for a moment he almost passed out. His hand was shaking terribly, and he held hard on to the phone to stop the trembling. .
Sweat fell down his face in torrents, and he tried to stay focused.
Â
YAW KUNTU
Sorry, I had a fault with my phone. Please, how is my wife now?
There was a long pregnant pause at the end.
FEMALE VOICE
Please, could you come to the Eden Hospital? An administrator would like to-
YAW KUNTU
(breaking in harshly)
I asked you how my wife was!!
Â
FEMALE VOICE
(unsteadily)
I’m afraid we lost her, sir. She is dead. If you could kindly-
YAW KUNTU
(cutting in)
Thank you very much. But it is a bit late, so I’ll come over in the morning.
He hung up the phone and sat down wearily on the bed.
He felt crushed.
Tears came to his eyes, and they shimmered on his eyelashes, and his vision was blurred, but the tears didn’t spill down his cheeks.
Kwansema was dead!
