EPISODE 32
[passster password=”etwekum”]It was Wednesday evening in the little village of Barina.
A pickup truck entered the compound of the house where Ken Kedem and his wife were being hosted.
Ken and his wife were sitting on the porch conversing about Effe when the car stopped and the beautiful Doctor Anifat got out.
Ken and Ivy smiled with pleasure and stood up to welcome the good doctor.
“Ani!” Ken said as he shook her hand. “How’re you doing?”
“I’m fine, Mr. Kedem,” she said.
The women hugged briefly.
“Come, sit down,” Ivy said. “Let us offer you some water to drink.”
“Thank you, but that wouldn’t be necessary,” Doctor Anifat said. “I have to go to the main hospital at Bolgatanga.”
“Is everything okay?” Ken asked suddenly, and his voice was filled with concern.
“Actually, it is about Effe,” the Doctor said.
“What’s wrong?” Ivy almost screamed as she felt a sharp tug at her heart.
Doctor Anifat held her arm suddenly.
“Oh, there’s nothing to worry about!” she said quickly. “It is good news, actually. You know, every Wednesday the Gandun Daji Ubangiji leaves messages and attends to people we send to him, right?”
“Yes, yes, I remember,” Ken said desperately. “Today is Wednesday. So, what’s up with Effe?”
“Well, the man left a message for us,” Doctor Anifat said hurriedly. “Those who went to the lake brought a package from him. Apparently, Effe is now out of harm’s way. She is now walking too, and able to move all her limbs.”
Ivy Kedem screamed and collapsed against her husband.
She began to pray and praise God. Ken Kedem held his wife, and Doctor Anifat smiled when she saw the tears in the elderly man’s eyes.
“Oh, thank God, thank God!” he whispered in a trembling voice. “We owe that man a lot! Please, I know he’s mean and wild, but please, is it possible for you to arrange for us to meet him?”
The doctor shook her head sadly.
“Unfortunately, no. He doesn’t charge for what he does, and does not meet relatives.”
“Oh, but he must, he must!” Ken cried. “This is not good on his part, not good at all. I’m so much indebted to him, you know!”
Ivy Kedem wiped tears from her eyes with the edge of her cover cloth.
“What about her eyes?” she asked softly. “Is it possible for her to see again?”
“That is why I’m going to the central hospital at Bolgatanga,” Doctor Anifat said quickly. “The man attached comprehensive profiling of her case, and it seems she needs minor eye surgery to remove cloudy films that had formed across the lenses of her eyes.”
“Dear Lord!” Ken cried, alarmed. “That sounds scary!”
“Oh, no, no, not at all,” Doctor Anifat said quickly. “The whole procedure would not take more than an hour. What’s more, the Gandun Daji is suggesting the use of the new laser technology. That would make it fast and not so painful, and she could have her sight back the same day.”
“Oh, can that be really true?” Ivy asked as her tears fell. “Doctor Ani, please, I beg of you, don’t make fun of an old woman who wants her daughter back.”
The kind doctor hugged the elderly woman and smiled radiantly.
“No, Mrs. Kedem,” she said gently. “As I told you, the Gandun Daji is a wonderful man. If he says the surgery would correct her sight, then indeed it is true. He would be releasing Effe tomorrow, so I have to go and work it out quickly with the surgeon because we’re dealing with time.”
“Effe is coming home tomorrow?” Ken whispered, stunned. “But…he gave us a month!”
“She recovered quickly, sir,” the doctor said.
“So we can go and meet her tomorrow?” Ivy inquired.
“Definitely, Mrs. Kedem. That’s why I came here. Tomorrow morning, the Ya-Na’s men will come and pick you to the lakeside to meet your daughter. They’ll take her straight to the Bolgatanga hospital.”
“The Lord be praised!” Ivy cried. “Thank you, my God! Thank you, strange man, oh, but we can’t thank you enough. Doctor Ani, thank you, and God bless you. Ya-Na and the people of Barina! Thank you so much! Hassana Larry, my dearest friend, God bless you till your cup runneth over! Oh, I’m so happy, so happy! Tomorrow I’ll see my darling daughter again!”

Rupert was not taking any chances with Ruffalo Sacchi this time around.
Although the Rita lady was willing to speak, he did not want to be side-tracked with a bunch of half-truths.
Ruffalo was a cunning fox and always worked with care. It was possible that he had trained his cohorts on what to say in case they were captured. Thus, Rupert took the only avenue he could rely on: he injected Rita with a special truth serum that, once coursing through her bloodstream and brain cells, forced her to sing nothing but the truth.
And she sang, yes.
And within an hour, after the ambulance had come to convey the wounded Jonathan to the hospital, Rupert had the information he needed. As it turned out, the Rita girl was not only a plant but also warmed Ruffalo’s bed occasionally.
Rupert called a squad team made up of Interpol operatives and the hard-hitting Ghanaian tactical drug unit of the police.
Rita had confirmed that Ruffalo was in Takoradi, holed up in a private beach house, and had plans to leave over the weekend.
The team hit the beach house.
With silenced guns and moving with stealth, they took out several of Ruffalo’s guards and marched into the well-fortified house.
Rupert was especially glad when they found Toni Gattuso in one of the rooms asleep with a teenaged Italian girl. Toni was Ruffalo’s only nephew, and he was known to be the drug lord’s second in command.
Rupert began to get worried when they searched all the rooms but could not find Ruffalo. He slapped Toni Gattuso hard with the butt of his gun and glared at him.
“Where’s Ruff, you piece of shit?” Rupert snarled furiously.
“I don’t know, I don’t know!” Gattuso squealed in heavily-accented English. “This is his room, and he was here with a girl. I spoke to him and left for my room. Signore, I do not know where my uncle is, I swear!”
“Fuck, fuck, fuck!” Rupert said and rubbed his forehead desperately.
“Must have had a warning, boss,” Rick said coldly. “Must have left.”
“Guy’s slick,” Toby responded.
“No, no, no!” Rupert said, agitated as he walked into the huge bathroom, and then walked back to the wardrobe and pushed the clothes aside. “He was here, man! Cocaine on the bedside table, freshly used condoms in the wastebasket in the fucking bathroom, panties on the floor! Guy’s here, yes. Only hiding, the bastard!”
He turned from the wardrobe and noticed a pillow on the floor. He scowled as he stared at the bed. Rupert moved forward and kicked the pillow out of the way, and then he saw that there was a slight depression on the beautiful Italian rug where one of the legs of the bed had been!
The bed had been shifted!
Rupert cocked his gun and stepped backward.
“The bed!” he said sharply.
Toby shook his head.
“Already checked under the bed, boss.”
“Move the bed, drag it away!” Rupert said grimly.
Toby, Rick, and three Ghanaian cops dragged the heavy bed off the wall.
Immediately, shots rang out, the heavy bullets ripping the mattress on the bed. The men shouted and threw themselves. There was a woman’s squeal from beneath the bed as Rupert loosed off three bullets at the bed.
Toby fixed his automatic rifle on the bed and fired a wild burst of fire. A Ghanaian officer fired a burst into the bed too.
“Hold your fire, you fucking bastards!” came an enraged voice from below. “Shit, we’re coming out, fucking idiots!”
Rupert held his gun steady.
“Pull the damn bed!” he ordered.
Carefully, the men pulled the bed away, revealing a secret underground staircase.
“Come out, Ruffalo,” Rupert said grimly. “You only get one chance.”
A moment later, a naked skinny black woman emerged from the underground with one hand covering her crotch and the other arm across her heavy breasts.
Behind her was the huge bulk of Ruffalo Sacchi.
He was a muscular man of sixty-seven. He had a bald patch in the middle of his head and thick, grey hair above his ears and nape. The drug lord was wearing a pair of black boxers and he glared at Rupert with evil eyes.
Ruffalo Sacchi at last!
One of the most notorious, violent, and murderous drug barons in the world. His kingdom was wide, his reach almost limitless.
This man had destroyed millions of lives with his drugs and killed hordes of people in his evil reign. He was a monster, and he made Rupert’s blood boil!
“Rupert Henderson!” he said disdainfully and spat on the floor. “Micio! Pussy! You’re a dead man, you fucking idiot! Do you hear me? A fucking dead man!”
Rupert stepped forward and slammed the barrel of his gun across Ruffalo’s right cheek savagely. It opened a huge welt on the man’s cheek, but he grinned evilly and pointed a finger at Rupert.
“You pussy!” he hissed dangerously. “I’ll have your balls for that!”
“Toby, Rick, go down that hatch,” Rupert said as his gun remained on Ruffalo. “Tell me what you find!”
“Yes, boss,” Rick said as he held his rifle and began to descend into the underground room carefully.
“Careful, boys,” Rupert said sharply. “Might still be gunmen down there!”
“What do you think you’ve done here, huh?” Ruffalo asked savagely. “Nothing, Mr. Interpol pussy! You will take me to England? Fuck you! You’ll die before you get me out of the airport! Even if you get me to England, to trial, what do you think will happen? I have the men in my pocket! The world’s finest lawyers! I’ll be out in no time, pussy, and then I’ll come looking for you!”
Rupert said nothing as he glared at the murderous drug lord.
“You will know no peace, Mr. Fucking Interpol Pussy!” he hissed furiously. “I will kill you, and your parents, and your sister! I will kill your sister’s children and her fucking husband! I’ll even kill your father’s dog and your mother’s pussy cat! You fuck! I will kill them all! You have done nothing, Interpol Pussy!”
Rick and Toby came out presently, looking dazed.
“You won’t believe this, boss!” Toby said in a stunned voice. “The mother lode, shit. The huge room down below is filled to the tethers with hard coke. Never seen anything like that!”
Rupert nodded grimly and looked at Ruffalo unflinchingly.
“Seems we’ve got you, Mr. Sacchi,” he said coldly. “What is down there is your sentence to a long prison term. But I know that even when you’re in prison, your organization will continue to thrive. So, I want the complete breakdown of your network. From your frontmen right to your pimps. The politician in your pocket, everything about your network. And then, if you give me that, I can arrange a reduced sentence for you.”
“Fuck you, pussy!” Ruffalo Sacchi screamed and spat into Rupert’s face.
The saliva was thick and phlegmy, stinking and disgusting, but Rupert didn’t flinch as it rolled off his cheek.
“I give you nothing!” Ruffalo screamed. “You’re nothing but pussy! I own you, and I own your bosses! Nothing can happen to me! Fuck you, I tell you nothing!”
“Toni Gattuso, you know everything about the Ruffalo Network, right?” Rupert asked softly.
“Yes, he knows everything, pussy!” Ruffalo shouted and laughed into Rupert’s face. “But he won’t tell you shit! Do you hear me? He’s my nephew, and he knows everything about my business. My contacts, the topmen, the middlemen, the pimps below, everything! But he won’t tell you anything! You can torture us all you want, pussy, but it won’t bring you anything! You will rather die, pussy!”
“Thank you for that information, Ruff,” Rupert said calmly as he removed the silencer from his gun and replaced the bullet clip. He cocked the gun but kept it down at his side.
He looked at one of the four Ghanaian cops in the room.
“Sir, please, take the woman outside,” Rupert said softly. “I thank you and your men for your bravery today. But, kindly wait outside, please.”
The Ghanaian saluted and took the arm of Ruffalo’s girl and beckoned to the other Ghanaian cops. They left the room.
Five men were left in the room.
Rupert, Toby, Rick, Gattuso, and Ruffalo.
Ruffalo laughed derisively as he looked at Rupert.
“What’s this, huh?” he asked softly. “You think you can threaten me, you fucking pussy? I have balls of iron, you monkey! I own your system, so there’s nothing you can do to me, you hear? All you can do is arrest me and submit me to your fucking bosses!”
Rupert raised his gun.
“Boss?” Toby said with sudden alarm. “C’mon, Rupe, shit! Don’t do this, man!”
“Rupe?” Rick said as he took a step forward. “Stop it, Rupe!”
Rupert shot Ruffalo Sacchi in the mouth!
The gun boomed in the room, and the bullet smashed into Ruffalo’s jaw.
The impact of the heavy bullet lifted Ruffalo off his feet and slammed him on the ground.
Gattuso screamed, dropped to his knees and covered his head with his hands.
Coldly, Rupert stepped close to Ruffalo.
The eyes of the drug lord were wide now with fear as he stared at the Interpol agent, and his hands beat feebly on the rug.
“Pussy!” Rupert said and spat into Ruffalo’s face.
And then he shot the man two more times in the head.
Ruffalo Sacchi, murderous and savage drug lord, bled out and died on the rug.
Rupert turned and fixed Gatusso with cold eyes.
Toni Gatusso raised his hands and screamed shrilly.
“I know everything, all network, all peoples, all drug corridors! I tell you everything, everything, please, please, please! Yes, I tell everything!”
Rupert sat on the edge of the bed with his left foot resting on the chest of the dead Ruffalo. He dragged the bedsheet and wiped the remnants of Ruffalo’s spit from his cheek.
“Your uncle was a fool, Gattuso,” he said calmly. “He forgot that I’m a special agent, and I’m licensed to kill motherfuckers like him in the course of my duties.”
“I talk, I talk, please, please, I talk!’ Gattuso screeched as his terror flooded his face.
“Gentlemen, give Mr. Toni Gattuso a chair,” Rupert said coldly. “Let him talk.”

Chris Bawa, wearing his mask, took Effe to the lakeside.
The men from the Ya-Na had come and were in hiding, and they had left a note from the lady doctor. Apparently, she had been able to get the ophthalmologist at the main clinic at Bolgatanga and had scheduled Effe for the surgery.
“Eden,” Effe whispered beside him. “I’m afraid.”
The big man looked at her with great worry, and then he sighed.
“There’s nothing to be afraid of, Effe,” he said gently. “I told you it’s not complicated.”
“I’m not afraid of the surgery,” she whispered as she touched his hand. “I’m afraid of you leaving me. My spirit is troubled, Eden. It feels like you’re detaching from me.”
Again, he looked at her for a long time.
“I’m coming with you, Effe,” he said gently. “I’ll be in surgery with you.”
With a little cry, she put her arms around his waist and hugged him tightly.
“Thank you, Eden,” she said tremulously. “You don’t know just how much that means to me. I want you to be the first person I see when I open my eyes…please, do not deny me that.”
He hugged her tightly.
“I’ll be there, Angelface,” he said. “I promise.”
***
What followed then was a whirlwind of emotions, meetings, and tensions.
She travelled with Chris and the men to the village where there was a wonderful reunion with her parents.
They transferred to Doctor Anifat’s official car and journeyed to Bolgatanga. Effe would have loved to sit with Eden, but her grateful and happy parents sat on each side of her and flooded her with love whilst Eden rode in the front seat beside Doctor Anifat.
Eventually, they got to the hospital and there was a bustle of activities as she was prepared for the surgery. Luckily, Eden had provided prerequisite lab tests they needed, and almost an hour after arriving, she was ready for the surgery.
As he had promised, Eden went with her and collaborated with the ophthalmologist, Doctor Ray Annan. Their voices were soothing, and Effe was grateful for Eden’s hands as he kept holding hers.
Eventually, she was wheeled into the recovery room.
She was sedated, and she fell into a deep sleep, as required by the strange man.
“He’s quite a remarkable man,” Doctor Annan said as he stood with Doctor Anifat peering through the glass door at Eden as he stood gazing down at the sleeping Effe.
“He is,” Doctor Anifat said sadly. “Such great talent wasting in the forest. What on earth happened to that man?”
***
Effe came awake slowly.
She could feel the throbbing pain in her eyes, but that was not her immediate concern.
Her hands moved slowly across the bed.
“Eden?” she called gently. “Eden, are you here?”
“Oh, Effe, you’re up,” came Doctor Anifat’s voice. “How’re you feeling? The surgery was a great success, my dear! Wait, let me call Dr. Annan for you. Your parents are also still here. Get ready for another look at the world, dear.”
“No, no, wait,” Effe said in a rush. “Where’s he? Eden? Where’s he?”
Doctor Anifat sighed deeply, and her beautiful face was troubled.
“Don’t stress yourself, Effe,” she said softly.
“Don’t patronise me, please!” Effe said, acutely stressed. “Where’s he? Where’s Eden? Oh, please, tell me he’s here, I beg of you!”
Doctor Anifat’s lips trembled.
“He left you a letter, Effe,” she said softly.
“What?” Effe whispered, and for a beat of time, her heart stopped beating.
“He’s gone, Effe,” Doctor Anifat said softly. “And I don’t think he’s ever coming back. He told me he’s leaving the forest for good.”
