EPISODE 37
[passster password=”flair”]Frank Williams stood up from the bed and stretched luxuriously.
He was still naked, and he smiled sweetly down at Elaine as he bent over her and lifted her up. He put her gently on the bed, and then he moved away from her.
Elaine feigned complete wickedness as she looked at his tall back with a feeling of hatred and acute fear.
In his complacency, he had left her gun on the bed!
And beside it was the yellow capsule, which he said would give her complete healing.
“Fucking idiot!” Elaine hissed to herself as she reached for the gun with difficulty. Frank was standing still with his back turned to her. Elaine was still suffused with pain as she reached for the yellow capsule. With great difficulty, she popped it into her mouth, but this one did not dissolve!
It was not rubbery like the green one. It was hard like candy, and so she bit into it and chewed quickly. This one tasted like candy, and she breathed with relief and picked up the gun.
Carefully, praying that he would not turn around, she propped herself up on one huge pillow and aimed at his head. A headshot would kill him instantly.
Smiling cruelly, Elaine squeezed the trigger and steeled herself for the sound.
The hammers clicked on empty chambers!
Elaine’s eyes went wide as she squeezed the trigger again and again, but the gun only clicked and clicked! There were no bullets in it.
Frank Williams turned his head, took one look at her horrified face, and then he burst out laughing hard and opened his right hand.
The bullet clip was in his hand.
Frank had removed it from the gun!
He laughed uproariously but said nothing as he crossed to the bar and gently filled a small glass with water. He put the bullet clip into a drawer and locked it, and then he began to whistle as he came back to the bed with the glass of water.
Elaine was lying in the same position with the empty gun in her hands, and sheer hatred on her face.
“Here, take some water,” Frank said gently. “You would need it.”
“You bastard!” Elaine said furiously. “I don’t need water!”
She swung the butt of the pistol into the glass of water. The swing shattered the glass, and it fell on the bed whilst some crinkled on the floor.
“Alright,” Frank said and sat down on the edge of the bed away from her.
Elaine began to feel nauseous. Suddenly, she began to experience a severe headache, and her breath came in wheezes. She gasped as the worst pain she had ever experienced exploded into her body. She groaned and kicked her legs violently.
“Oh, Elaine, darling, something you must know,” Frank Williams said as he looked at her calmly. “That yellow thing you ate, thinking it was the serum, was actually a candy I let on the bed intentionally. And guess what, candies and sugar does not react well with the reagents of the poison I injected you with. You’re going to have the cruellest form of pain now. It would last appropriately five minutes, and you will need to drink a glass of water to stop it faster.”
Elaine stared at him with sheer horror as the pain hit her immediately!
This was beyond pain!
It grabbed her by every raw nerve end in her body and squeezed so frighteningly tightly that Elaine moaned and became as stiff as a board on the bed! She could not move as the pain ratcheted through her with murderous intents!
“Please, Frank!” she gasped as tears washed down her face. “Water, please, Frank!”
He smiled coldly at her.
“I brought you water, and you smashed it,” he said coldly. “Go and get your own water.”
“F-F-Fra-Frank, ple-ple-please!” Elaine gasped in agony. “Wa-wa-wa-water!”
He just watched her without any attempt to move.
“Don’t worry,” he said gently. “It’ll be over in five minutes.”
Elaine’s tears fell in torrents now!
She could barely move!
With a herculean effort, she turned over on her stomach, unashamedly now, and with a trembling hand she pushed the broken glass off the bed. She bunched up the wet patch of the cover sheet and chewed on it desperately to get enough water into her system.
She wept bitterly and painfully. At that particular moment, she would have given everything for a drop of water that would relieve her pain. Frank said five minutes, but to her, it lasted like a hundred hours. The pain almost made her brain explode, and as she twitched horribly on the bed, it dawned on her that Frank Williams, whoever he was, was not a man she should cross.
Finally, the pain began to subside.
Frank Williams stood up and walked to the sofa in one corner of the huge bedroom and sat down. He watched her without expression until she stopped moaning.
“Wow, you made it, sweetheart,” he said softly. “Now come here and sit beside me.”
Elaine found out that she could move, and that she was no longer feeling any pain. She rolled off the bed promptly and hurried to his side. Her eyes were soft as she sat down beside him.
“Good girl,” he said and put an arm around her. He pulled her to him and let her head rest on his stomach. He caressed her bare breasts gently.
She was filled with an overbearing sense of humility as she lay against him.
“I don’t want you to die, Elaine,” he said gently. “And if you play this right, you might just walk away from the devastating fallout. You must trust me, and you must do as I say until this is over. Do you understand?”
“Yes, Frankie, I understand,” she replied in a soft voice that made Frank Williams smile. “I’ll do anything you ask.”
“Good,” he said and drew a phone box lying next to him. He opened it and took out an iPhone charger. He looked at it carefully and gave it to Elaine.
“This is a charger for your iPhone, Elaine,” he said gently. “Now, this is all that I want you to do.”
“Yes, Frankie, I’m listening.
“Good girl,” Frank said with a chuckle. “I want you to take this charger, and when you get home where Wailer is, insert it into a wall socket. I mean a wall socket, Elaine. Then charge your phone on it for ten minutes.”
“Is that all I have to do?” Elaine asked, perplexed. “Charge my phone with your charger?”
“Is that all, Frankie?” she asked softly. “I’m puzzled and confused. What would charging my phone with your charger do, Frankie?”
“The less you know, the safer it would be for you,” Frank said calmly. “Just go home, plug it into a wall socket, and then charge your phone for ten minutes.”
“You’re still not going to tell me who you are, and what you’re doing, would you?”
“No, I won’t,” he said simply.
“Okay, Frankie,” she said tenderly.
“Remember, you have only seven days to live,” he said coldly. “You better make this work, or you will die!”
“But, if Wailer asks if you are dead, what should I say? If he gets to know you’re still alive, he would kill me!”
“I don’t give a fuck,” Frank said coldly. “It is your call, baby. Go in there, charge your phone, come back to me, get your serum.”
She sighed with more confusion and nodded.
“Alright,” she whispered. “I’ll do it. But Frank, please, don’t betray me. If you cut me adrift, Wailer would torture me to death.”
“You have nothing to worry about, Elaine, as long as you’re gliding with me,” he said calmly.
“But what is charging my phone with your charger going to do?” Elaine asked in a frightened voice. “Is there a bomb inside that would be activated and explode, killing Wailer and all of us? Would it release a poisonous gas? I’m so scared, Frankie, please. I know I tried to kill you, yes, but it seems you’re already ahead of us! Are you seeking revenge for somebody we might have killed? Please, Frankie, this suspense alone will kill me! You have me at your mercy now! Without your serum, I’ll die in a week! Why can’t you tell me something, anything, to quell my fears?”
“That charger won’t kill you, Elaine, or anybody else,” he said coldly. “It is an ordinary charger.”
“Oh, certainly there’s something in it, something you want to transmit to Wailer’s place!”
“This is between me and Wailer Vroom, Elaine,” Frank said calmly. “You can choose to be with me, or with him, I don’t care. But, be sensible. You don’t want to be against me. And if you’re sensible, you’ll walk away from all of this in one piece, and with riches. Your call, lady.”
Elaine sighed deeply and rubbed her hands on his stomach.
This man was dangerous and ruthless, and it seemed he was a far slicker player than any of them had imagined. They had thought they were playing him, but he was on top of them with a higher agenda that was as frightening as it was mysterious.
Elaine had been with Wailer for many years, and had come to believe that Wailer was the Capo di tutti Capi, the Boss of Bosses, until this cold, hard man turned up.
“I’m with you, Frankie,” Elaine said softly, and she meant it.
Now, she would have to find a way to take Steve out of the system and swing him off Wailer’s radar. Elaine could feel a storm brewing, and she did not want Steve and her to be in the eye of the storm when it hit.
“Good girl,” Frank Williams said and caressed her sleek thighs. “Now, let’s go back to bed. To sleep this time. I’m tired.”
“Yes, Frankie,” she said softly.

Two days after her eyes opened, Effe finally stood on the grass in front of the cabin in the forest.
Eyram and Rupert had arrived with the helicopter.
They had thanked the Ya-Na and the kind people of Barina profusely, and as Effe requested, they gave them clothes and money.
They said a special thank you to Doctor Anifat too!
The Ya-Na had been sad that the Gandun Daji Ubangiji, had left, but he was glad Effe had gotten her sight back. He informed them that the police had come across seven robbers on the road to Barina two days previously, soundly beaten up and wounded.
The interrogation of the thieves had led to the arrest of two more!
Their description of the man who beat them up fit the Gandun, and this had indeed told the people that he was a spirit who had visited them.
He said the robbers had been terrorizing the communities, especially traders in Barina, and the Spirit in the forest had struck them down! This Gandun had saved them in the best way possible before leaving, and they would forever worship him, and hope that one day, he would come back.
Effe had also learned of the full extent of Steve’s treachery, but she had not cried. She had already suspected as much. She listened as her parents, Eyram and Rupert took turns to explain to her all that Steve had done.
“It is good he sold my house,” Effe said with a sad smile. “I just couldn’t have been able to live inside that house again. I would have sold it. But it is alright, he can keep all the money he stole. He’s just a thief, and nothing more. I have another building at Beach Road, near the seashore. I built it for us, to live in after our wedding. It is supposed to be a wedding surprise for him, so I’m glad it turned out this way. I’ll go and stay there, with you, Rammy, and our parents.”
“I have my own house, lady,” Ken Kedem said with a scowl.
“I know, Dad,” Effe said with a smile. “But I need your strength with me, for a while, please.”
Ivy Kedem wrapped her arms around Effe tenderly.
“Don’t mind your father, my darling,” she said passionately. “Yes, we’ll be with you for as long as you want us to.”
As the three women embraced and shed a few tears, Ken Kedem looked severely at Rupert.
“And you, Mr. Henderson, my daughter tells me you bought her an engagement ring,” he said.
Rupert smiled proudly.
“I love your daughter very much, sir,” he said evenly.
“Maybe you do, my man, maybe you do,” Ken said with an unwavering stare. “But in Africa, we just don’t buy engagement rings and call it engagement. You need to come and see me, and come for a list. You would buy her things I list down, and pay the dowry too.”
“Oh, Dad!” Eyram cried with horror.
“Daddy!” Effe said with a giggle. “Please! You can’t say those things now!”
“Shame on you, Kenneth Korku Kedem!” Ivy Kedem said reproachfully.
“Witches!” Ken said with a mischievous smile. “Oh, none of you would be able to usurp the proper way of things! Look, Rupert, I like you a whole lot. And you have done for us things no man had ever done, and we’re so grateful to you. You even saved our lives, and we can’t repay you for that. But I won’t allow you to buy an engagement ring and think you can squeeze my daughter’s buttocks as a result!”
“Korku, ahhh!” Ivy screamed. “Look at your head!”
“It is nicer than yours, ugly woman!” Ken shot back instantly, and his wife threw a plastic cup at him.
Rupert Henderson smiled and stepped forward.
“Actually, sir, Eyram told me about that,” he said as he handed a cheque to Ken Kedem. “Sorry, I never tried to usurp your traditions. I hope that cheque can take care of some of the things on that list, sir.”
Ken looked at the amount on the cheque and looked at Rupert with a stunned expression.
“This is not a prank?” he asked softly.
Rupert laughed and shook his head.
“No, sir, no prank,” he said.
“Well, what can I say?” Ken said with a wide grin. “Now you can decide to shave off Eyram’s hair or cut off one of her legs, and I won’t mind!”
As they all laughed, Ivy Kedem stood up to go and peer at the envelope, and Ken pushed her away with his foot. Eventually, though, Ivy got her way as usual, and snatched the cheque from him.
Effe looked at them and smiled sadly.
Such a happy group. Such a sweet family!
And only Eden was missing! He was the only one needed to complete her happiness!
***
The cabin was a paradise!
It was not at all like she had anticipated and seen in her dreams.
It was strong and sturdy, the grass in front almost like an exotic garden. She stood in the porch and looked across at the lake, then on the rich grass.
Here, right here, they had dared the most ferocious storm, and made sweet and wonderful love right here!
Oh, Eden, my love, my darling…don’t kill me!
“The doors are locked!” Eyram called from the porch. “We can’t get inside!”
“He told me he keeps them in the door on the coconut tree,” Effe said hastily.
There were indeed coconut trees at the back of the cabin, and Rupert noticed one which had something like a crude door drawn on it.
He pushed it, and the tiny but strange door opened inward.
He found the keys in there and took them. A moment later, the doors opened, and Effe went inside slowly.
“This Gandun Daji is indeed a remarkable man!” Ken said in awe as he moved around. “You were in good hands, daughter!”
“The best hands, Dad, for eternity,” Effe said so sadly that they all looked at her with concern.
She moved through the doors, picturing him, remembering!
Oh, dear Lord!
Memories would kill her!
She expected to hear Dezzy’s excited bark any second, and to his deep, soothing voice!
His things had been packed into neat boxes and stowed, signs that indeed, he did not expect to come back in a long time. She entered the ward and roamed around, hearing his voice reverberating in her ears. She heard Dezzy low whimpering as she moved around.
On one of the shelves was a huge tubular glass with a purple solution in it, and she wondered if this was that bitter medicine he had forced her to drink.
She smiled ruefully when she remembered. It could not be that medicine, no. That had been herbal extract, and it had been thicker than this light solution.
Oh, Eden, why?
Why are you doing this to us?
Eventually, she got to the bedroom.
All his bank of security screens had been packed too. The wardrobe was empty. In one corner were wooden and cardboard boxes neatly stacked. Tears came to her eyes as she sat down gingerly on the bed and put her face in her hands.
Why?
He did not love her? Was that it? Did he love someone else? Had he gone back to a family somewhere? A wife and children?
Oh, Eden!
Her eyes still hurt, but it was very bearable now.
But the tears made it sting just a little bit more, but she was alright, she was fine! From now, no physical pain would be more than the raw agony in her heart.
She stood up and walked into the bathroom and stood looking at the bath. Right here! Where he had held her in his arms, massaged her, loved her, and she had kissed him so sweetly.
Effe’s legs trembled as she sat down slowly on the water closet.
This man had cleaned her, washed her, been a friend, a parent, a lover!
There was never going to be a replacement for him. Her heart was for him, for eternity. But obviously, he did not want her as much as she wanted him, and did not want to see her again.
Could she respect that?
Would it be prudent for her to hurt and give him the space he needed?
Effe slowly brushed tears from her eyes, and then she saw that in the corner against the wall were tiny balls of paper. Maybe he had torn it up, balled them, and thrown them away absent-mindedly.
She did not have anything from him to remember her by, except his cheque and his note. She stood up, walked to the wall, and picked up the six balls of paper. Effe stood still and tried not to cry as she slowly unfolded the first ball of paper.
He had written her name in bold, black lettering with three exclamation marks:
EFFE!!!
A scream?
Obviously a moment of pain, a longing! Had he written them when she was here, or when he came to pack up? Was it a scream of frustration, or a scream of longing, of needing?
With her hands trembling harder, she unfolded the second paper.
Miss her so!
Effe moaned, and her legs shook as she read, and she walked to the water closet and sat down again. Desperately, she unfolded all the remaining four, lay them on her lap, and stared at them as tears coursed down her cheeks.
Angelface
Gotta break that promise
Need you bad, Effe
Love you Effe
“Oh, Eden!” Effe wept bitterly now. “Oh, Lord! Don’t let me go because I want to share your love! I need you much more badly, Eden, and I miss you far, far more! I love you more, Eden! For the very first time in my life…I love!”
She gathered the pieces of paper and held them against her heart.
“I’ll find you, Eden,” she whispered tremulously as she tried to breathe. “Even if it would take a lifetime…I will find you!”
