THE AFFAIR
EPISODE 12
Henrik dropped off Chelsca at school as promised and had a long chat with the bully in the presence of the School Principal.
After he was satisfied his point had been well taken he left for court. Thankfully, the judge was indisposed and the case was adjourned to the following week. He drove straight to the office to find a brown envelope marked personal and confidential on his desk. He tore it open and staired at the contents in total disbelief.
Melisa had drawn up a legal document that spells out her expectations of him as far as the pregnancy was concerned. In summary, she wanted him with her every step of the way. She wanted him to be with her for all the prenatal and postnatal appointments. She wanted him to see them once a week for at least three hours and take her out every now and then.
And of course she talked about how much money she expected from him every month for hers and the baby’s upkeep. She in a nutshell wanted Henrik to be part of her life. She wanted him to play his role as a father to their unborn child. Furthermore, she had a portion for signatures so that the agreement would be enforceable if one party shirked their responsibilities.
She had already signed her portion.
Henrik laughed sarcastically and told himself he wasn’t going to fall for her traps anymore. There was no way he was signing that agreement.
Henrik buzzed for Shanel who came almost immediately.
“Where did this come from?” he asked confused.
“A lady came in the morning to see you. I told her where you would be and she left that for you. She said it was private and confidential so I put it on your table in her presence before she left.”
“Ok. Thank you.” Henrik dismissed her and picked up his phone to call Melisa. She did not answer. Herick left a message for her to call him as soon as possible.
When he didn’t hear from Melisa for three days after she had taken the trouble of dropping the famous agreement in his office, Henrik finally concluded Melisa had come to her senses and decided not to have the baby. Then he was awoken from sleep by the ring of his phone at midnight that day. In order not to disturb Kiara, he quickly moved out of the bedroom when he saw it was Melisa who was calling at that ungodly hour.
“What the hell do you want at this time of night?”
“Well, since you have been so cold-hearted towards me and the proposal I left for you, I decided to call to warn you not to mess with me. You have no idea what I can do to you. I would really enjoy the look of shock and betrayal on your wife’s face when she finds out I am carrying your child. I’m warning you, Henrik, don’t push me. If I don’t get the agreement in the next three days, you would see a side of me you’ve never seen,” she said and cut the line.
Henrik took a leak and went back to bed. He lied about who called when Kiara asked him who was calling that late in the night.
Melisa had called him at midnight every day after that but Henrik had not answered her calls. He had made sure his phone was on silent every time he went to bed.
He had woken to countless missed calls and messages on WhatsApp from Melisa but Henrik would still not budge. Henrik never returned the calls or replied to the messages Melisa left.
On the fourth day, just as they sat down for dinner.
The doorbell chimed and since Kiara was already standing she decided to answer it. Shortly afterwards, Kiara walked in with Melisa behind her.
Henrik was totally shocked.
“Melisa!”
“Hello, Henrik, don’t tell me you forgot we had an appointment today over dinner in your house.”
Henrik was speechless.
Melisa apologized to Kiara-Joy for the misunderstanding and asked to leave if she had come at a bad time since it was obvious Henrik had not informed her of their appointment.
Kindhearted Kiara-Joy insisted she stayed since there was enough food for an extra mouth.
Henrik still didn’t say a thing.
They all ate in silence apart from the occasional answers Kiara gave to Melisa to her questions.
Realizing he was drawing suspicion from his silence, Henrik explained to Kiara that Melisa was a mate at the Law School and she had contacted him on a case she needed his help with. He apologized to his wife for forgetting to inform her she was coming over.
Kiara brushed it off as nothing and excused them by taking Chelsca to prepare her for bed shortly after dinner.
Henrik fumed with anger when they were alone.
“What do you want from me, Melisa? You want to ruin me? Is that what you call love? Geez, you are really something. How can you show up in my house and make me look bad like that?”
“Well, what did you expect me to do. You wouldn’t answer my calls, you wouldn’t respond to my messages and the agreement. Was I supposed to just sit there and watch you scorn me? You have no idea who you are messing with, Henrik Kore. This is just the beginning of what a crazy woman in love can do. You better shape up and act smart or I will make sure you lose everything you’ve worked so damn hard for,” Melisa replied and got to her feet.
“And where do you think you are going?” Henrik said angrily.
“You are used to having the final say, aren’t you? Now listen and listen real good, don’t act up with me because when I go down, you go down with me. You are a married woman and your situation is worse. I say that because our culture frowns on an adulterous woman more than adulterous men.
When this gets out, you would lose more than I would so if I were you I will rationalize every step I take. Stop playing the victim here. You knew exactly what you were doing that night, you planned this. You should be ashamed of yourself instead of feeling you have the upper hand here. It is not news for men to have affairs. It happened in the Bible days and it is literally accepted in our generation.
Do you know what they did to adulterous women like you in the past? They stoned them to death. If I were you, I would be smart and come up with a better plan than the trash you have in that so called agreement of yours. How are you going to explain all that to your husband, huh? He is still your husband, you know! Or you lied about that too to make me feel sorry for you?”
“This is not the place or time for that discussion. Continue lying to your wife. I’m out of here. Seeing you that shocked and shaken by my presence alone has made my day. I am going to sleep like a baby tonight. Good night.”
Henrik called Kiara-Joy and informed her Melisa was leaving. Kiara exchanged pleasantries with Melisa and wished her well even though she couldn’t get why she was leaving so soon.
Henrik saw her off to the main gate. Melisa had parked right outside the gate. He saw her off to her car and made sure she was seated and ready to go. He then turned to leave.
“Henrik, can I get a kiss for the night?” she asked smiling.
“You are crazy. Just be on your way, will you? I am not touching you ever again. The last time I did, I gave you the upper hand to mistreat me. It won’t happen again, not even in your wildest dreams.”
“That is not true and you know it. You enjoyed it as much as I did. If you tow my line, things could be perfect between us. No one need to know about our love baby. I can keep that a secret forever. I love you, that’s the truth and I wouldn’t do anything to hurt you. You just have to give me the chance to show you how much I care.”
“I don’t think you have the faintest idea what caring is. You are bent on ruining my life by having that baby and you say you care? I’m sure that’s how you cared about your Abel. You are giving me the reason to believe that he did the right thing by leaving you.”
“That hurts, Henrik. I don’t think I have to pay attention to you. You have messed up big time and you are looking for someone to carry that cross for you. What happened between Abel and I is our business. You men are all pigs. Abel claims he doesn’t love me anymore and that he’s in love with someone else yet every time I see him he falls for my seduction.
I rule. Women rule. You men are pathetic. And to answer your question about what I was going to tell him, he knows I’m pregnant and the fool believes he is the father. The fool is so happy about it that he is thinking of moving back to Ghana to give our marriage a second chance. A’int you all men a bunch of fools?”
“So why are you pestering me with the same pregnancy. What shows I’m even the father of that child, Melisa? Abel is happy because I’m sure you screwed him around the same time you did me. Why don’t you just leave me alone?”
Melisa laughed her head off. She explained to Henrik that she only went to Abel when she found out she was pregnant. She told him that she only seduced him to cover up for the pregnancy so people wouldn’t point accusing fingers at her. But the sad thing was that she wasn’t so much in love with Abel anymore.
She wanted Henrik and since he was the true father of the child she was expecting, she owed it a duty to ensure the child grew up knowing his or her father. She asked him not to judge her because he was worse than her.
He was blessed with a devoted and committed wife yet he cheated on her at the first opportunity. She rattled on about the fact that she could be excused for her actions because she was separated from her husband.
But Henrik was still ‘happily married’. She encouraged Henrik to search his soul because to her, she thought there was something missing in his marriage that was why it was so easy for her to seduce him. She gave him an ultimatum for returning the signed agreement to her apartment the next day and left.
