THE AFFAIR
EPISODES 13-14
Henrik was still looking at the retreating vehicle when Kiara-joy opened the door to check on him.
She had been very uncomfortable with the look on Henrik’s face when Melisa showed up. She was sure Henrik lied to her about knowing that she was coming. It looked as if there was something he wasn’t telling her and she needed answers.
Henrik walked briskly to her and pulled her close. He told her he loved her from the bottom of her heart and kissed her. He told her there was no way any human could love the way he loved and adored her.
Kiara-Joy felt Henrik was saying that to convince himself.
He drew her into the living room and made her sit on his lap.
“How about us trying for the number two tonight?” He said seductively and traced his finger on her beasts.
Kiara-Joy laughed and slid to the space beside him. Henrik pulled her head gently and put it on his lap stroking her hair at the same time.
“Technically no. It’s not my fertile period yet. Even if we make love tonight, I know I won’t get pregnant.”
‘What are you talking about? You know when you can and cannot get pregnant? Does every woman know this?” Henrik said and realized how stupid he sounded.
“And why are you interested in knowing what every woman knows of late?’ she asked with sarcasm.
“Oh, it was just a question. I just wanted to know if it’s some kind of training every woman go through. I didn’t mean anything bad, please,” he explained weakly.
“Well, if you say so. Women have a way of knowing these things. These days we can decide to have a boy or a girl. Since we already have a girl, I was thinking we should plan having a boy.”
“And how are we going to do that.”
“Just trust me. Now that I know you want more, I will give you more.”
Henrik was silent. He thought about Melisa. He wondered if she knew she would get pregnant the day they got together. Henrik thought if it was all a big plan to trap him. He wondered if she was on a revenge mission for rejecting her in the past.
“Why, you won’t say anything?” Kiara’s question interrupted his thoughts. Kiara got to her feet and walked to the bedroom. Henrik knew she got like that every time she felt ignored. Henrik followed her to the bedroom and apologized.
She sought for explanations for his actions but got none. She mentioned she had seen him so shocked and scared when he saw Melisa in the house. Kiara told him she didn’t buy his explanation that he forgot to inform her she was coming over. She told him she was aware there was something he wasn’t telling and warned him to be careful of whatever he was doing with her.
She reminded him of how she felt about infidelity and all. Kiara complained about the late night calls from the same number that came through and the fact that he had resorted to putting his phone on silent. She told him he had changed since he returned from the U.K. She told him deep down within her she felt they had drifted apart somehow. Kiara told him there was something unspoken between him and Melisa but she couldn’t put a finger on it and entreated him to confide in her if there was indeed anything worth knowing.
She promised she wouldn’t over react no matter what it is.
“Have you been snooping on me? Is it that you don’t trust me? How could you go through my phone?”
Henrik pretended he was insulted by her words and she ended up apologizing.
They took a bath together in silence and went straight to bed afterwards.
EPISODE 14
Henrik sat behind his huge executive desk buried in the court summaries Audrey had submitted for review. He admitted Audrey was very intelligent and had grasped her tasks with ease. She had become an indispensable mentee. He admired her flair in written reports. He could hardly find any grammatical errors in her submissions.
Henrik made a few additions to the summaries and buzzed for her to pick them up. He took the opportunity to commend her positive attitude to duty and encouraged her to keep it up. Audrey thanked him for his kind words and added that she was glad to have gotten the opportunity to learn from the best.
Henrik dismissed her and walked to the visitors’ area to fetch a cup of coffee. He took a sip and sat facing the window. The curtains had been drawn and he could see the sky from where he sat. It was a bright beautiful day but recent events had robbed him of any happiness.
He had even lost interest in his job. He felt like he was sitting on a time bomb that could go off anytime. Henrik inhaled the aroma from the coffee deeply and took another sip.
Henrik thought of Melisa and the baby she claimed she was expecting. For some reason he found it very hard to believe she was actually pregnant but then he had reasoned no one could lie about something like that. Questions nagged him, though; was she sure he was the father of that baby? He wondered if he should ask for a paternity test when the baby was born.
He thought about the innocent baby who was caught up in the middle of all the confusion. Henrik thought about the effects all these would have on the child, and the possibility that the baby might have to grow up without knowing him as the biological father if Abel decided to raise him.
He adored kids but the circumstances around the child’s entry in his life made things a bit complicated. For now, he had not developed any feeling for the baby yet. But what if all that changed when he or she made her entry into this world? Would he be able to handle it so well Kiara-Joy and Chelsca wouldn’t be affected in anyway?
Could he keep this a secret forever? He was sure Kiara-Joy would leave him if she found out. He’d had his chances to tell her what had gone down the bridge but somehow it didn’t feel it was the right time. What if the baby turned out not to be his? Then he would have hurt Kiara-Joy for nothing.
He still believed abortion was the only solution to the problem but Melisa was still standing her ground against the idea.
He walked over to his desk and pulled out the famous agreement from the mini safe that stood beside his desk. Henrik went over the contents and realized they weren’t things he couldn’t manage to do but his fear was that once he agreed Melisa was going to want more.
He wondered about the reason she was separated from her husband.
A knock on his door brought him to his present. Shanel walked in with a long face.
“Sorry, sir, but the lady who brought the envelop the other day is here to see you. I told her you were not available but she insisted on seeing you. She wouldn’t take no for an answer and she wouldn’t give me her name either. She said I should just mention your friend from U.K and that you would understand.”
Henrik told Shanel to let the visitor in.
Melisa walked in with a smirk on her face. She sat down at the visitors’ area and commented on how well he was being treated at work. She commented on how lucky Henrik was in life: a good job and a perfect family.
Also, she reminded him that if he did not reason up, he was going to lose everything. Melisa told him that all she had to do was get to his wife first and his world would come crashing down right before his eyes. She told him she had taken the initial step in winning his wife over. She informed him she was just coming from Kiara’s shop and admitted she was super talented.
Henrik felt a sudden fear when she mentioned Kiara.
“What do you want from me, Melisa? Why are you doing this to me?”
“You know what I want so stop playing dumb. Sign the damn documents and let’s get on with our lives. I must say your wife is very trusting. She had no clue what you have been doing behind her back. She adores and trusts you completely. You should have heard her sing your praise. I know she would never forgive you if she learns of your grand betrayal.”
“I’m signing no such thing, Melisa. What am I going to tell Kiara on the days that I am supposedly expected to be with you?’
“What happened to the smart guy I knew? You don’t need me to tell you how to handle your wife, do you? You are a lying son of a bitch just like all the men I’ve known. Hm, you say one thing and do exactly the opposite. I am sure you tell her every day how much you love her and how you would never hurt her yet at the first opportunity you cheat on her.
Then you go back home and pretend nothing had happened. I am sure if God had taken an inch off your dick every time you cheated on your wife, there would be nothing left of that dick of yours by now. Stop acting like a saint with me, Henrik. You are bad just like all the others. You are ungrateful and deserve all that is coming to you.”
Melisa got to her feet and headed for the door.
“Melisa, please don’t go yet,” Henrik said, confused and afraid. He knew Melisa was not bluffing when she said she had seen Kiara-Joy and that had unsettled him greatly. Melisa turned with a mission- accomplished smile on her face. She walked back and sat facing him.
“Well?”
“I am a bit confused with all this. What am I supposed to be doing when I’m with you on those days?”
“Well, you are just to be there. You can do whatever you want as long as you are there.”
“So, am not supposed to get intimate or do any other thing physical with you?”
“Not if you don’t want to.”
“What it means in effect is I will just be there like a body guard of some sort.”
“Kind of, if that’s how you want to put it.”
“Where are we supposedly meeting on those days, if I may ask?”
“Well, I was thinking my home.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Let’s meet outside your home. I think you mentioned in your proposal that we could go out to dinner, watch a movie or read a book or something like that. I think we can do that, and I get to choose where to take you every week.”
“That’s not a bad idea but in other to be fair let’s alternate the choice of place. You choose this week; I choose the next.”
“And then you mentioned accompanying you to the antenatal checkups. Don’t you think that would raise eyebrows?”
“Not really, I will tell the Doctor you are my husband’s cousin and since he was not in the country, he had appointed you to attend the checkups on his behalf and give him a third party update on the checkups. I really want you to come with me. I can understand your worry but I will defend you if you get into any problem with Kiara because of it. Look,I want you to understand from the beginning that I’m not trying to break-up your home. I just want some of your time and attention.”
“Let’s agree that the days I accompany you to the antenatal clinic would be counted as part of the days I have to see you. What I mean to say is if I agree to see you on Thursdays, and the antenatal clinic is a Monday, I won’t see you that Thursday? Will that be fair?”
“Hmmm. What can I say, I think it should be fair. I would have loved to count it separately but since you wouldn’t be comfortable with it, I guess I can adapt to that.”
Henrik was surprised Melisa was being so understanding. Was she up to some game? He wondered if she really meant all that she was saying to him. He had brought this calamity upon himself and the sooner he took care of it, the better. Henrik had to make Melisa feel relaxed so he could figure out what to do with the whole mess.
He still wasn’t sure the baby was his but once she had come to him to say otherwise he just needed to play along until the baby was born. He would then ask for a paternity test and if it was confirmed he was the father, then he would have to find a way to get Kiara-Joy to forgive him for this betrayal.
“Okay, let’s say I agree. I am, however, not going to sign anything to that effect. We are both adults and a mutual verbal agreement shouldn’t be a problem. Let me warn you though that I won’t tolerate any alterations or additions to this agreement. I am going to update it with all the explanations we agreed to and send you a copy to keep. Let me say it again, one more addition or alteration and the deal is off. I hope this would keep you away from my family and my workplace. “
“Well said, Henrik, I guess I can leave now. I’ll see you on Thursday then.”
