EPISODE 7
Nana Ekua pulled up moments later at her workplace from the hospital.
She was very elated.
She walked gracefully into the building full of smiles.
The receptionist looked surprised because she hadn’t seen her like that in a long time.
She walked straight into Samba’s office.
He was busy signing some cheques.
“Hello, handsome!” Nana Ekua said smiling.
Samba looked up at the smiling Nana Ekua and wondered what changed her mood so drastically.
“Someone is in a good mood today. That is a refreshing change from what I saw yesterday. And I have only one guess for what might’ve given you that look. You and Kobby are back together?”
“I hope that were the case. But I am happy, for something else. You’ll just have to wait and see. Now, do you have anything for me to do this morning, boss?”
“Yeah, we need your signature on a few transactions. I will send them over to your office when I am through signing them. And since when did I become the boss around here?”
“Just now, and don’t get carried away, I am my own boss too. See you then,” Nana Ekua said and walked to her office.
Her secretary was also surprised to see her so happy.
“Good morning, Agyeiwaa.”
“Good morning, Madam.”
“Any messages for me?” Nana Ekua asked.
“Yes, I will send them over when you are settled,” the secretary answered.
“Let me have them right now.”
Agyeiwaa reluctantly handed her the messages pad. She wasn’t sure she wouldn’t be chastised for giving her the messages outside her office. Nana Ekua had always been upset when she had tried to speak to her about her appointments and messages when she was not seated.
“Don’t worry. It’s not a bother. Go back to what you were doing.”
Nana Ekua took the messages from her and stepped into her office and closed the door behind her.
She had never felt this good about anything. She felt at peace, fulfilled and, strangely, loved.
Nana Ekua went through the messages and made notes in her diary.
She made a few calls and shifted her attention to the pile of documents on her table needing her attention. She went through every one of them making the necessary corrections where necessary and personally delivered them to her secretary.
The secretary was even more surprised by that gesture.
Nana Ekua went back to her office to attend to the rest of the documents, unconsciously humming along.
Samba walked into her office and smiled.
“Hey, what is your secret? Your behaviour today is very unusual. Have you won the lottery or something?” he asked and sat down.
“Yes, I have won the biggest lottery ever. I have won something that can never be quantified in terms of money.” Nana Ekua said without looking up.
“Why are you keeping me in so much suspense? I want to share in your joy. Is that too much to ask of a friend?”
“No, I don’t think so but you’ll have to be a little patient. I am not ready to share it just yet. I want to hold on to it for a while longer,” Nana Ekua replied.
“Well don’t keep me in the dark for too long. Here are the cheques; let me have them when you are done,”
Samba got to his feet slowly unsure of what to do next. He would have loved to share in Ekua’s joy but it looked like she was not ready to share and that hurt him a little bit.
“It’s good to see you happy for a change, you know.” he stated and turned to leave.
“Wait a minute Samba. What do you have to say about me taking a long vacation, a year or more leave-of-absence to be precise? I can work from home though,” she asked smiling.
“Jesus Christ, you are asking for leave. What is actually going on? You are not planning on folding up, are you?” Samba asked, concerned.
“No, I’m planning no such thing. All I’m asking for is a year of absence so that I can attend to something very delicate and important.”
“Okay, let’s talk about it when you are ready,” he said and walked out.
Nana Ekua went back to the pile of work on her desk. She looked for the very urgent ones and dealt with them.
After signing the cheques she took it to Samba and asked to be excused for the rest of the day.
She drove to her house in high spirits.
She took a long cold bath and started taking her medications.
Later, she called her mom and talked for more than an hour. She however didn’t mention the baby.
She picked up a pen and a paper and wrote down all the things she would need before the baby arrived.
And she thought about the way she would want her nursery to look like. Then she realised she needed the sex of the baby to conclude that. But she wasn’t so enthused about knowing the sex of the baby. All she needed was a baby, hers and Kobby’s.
Nana Ekua battled with the idea of telling Kobby about the baby, their love child. She reasoned the child deserved to know both parents. She picked up the phone and called Kobby.
After a long ring, he answered, “Hello, Ekua,”
“Hi, hope I didn’t catch you at a bad time.”
“No, not really” he said.
“I was wondering if you could pass by my place this weekend. There is something very important I need to tell you.” Nana Ekua continued.
“Can’t we talk about it over the phone? I’m going on a business trip tomorrow and would be away for about a month.” Kobby replied.
“What I have to say can’t be said over the phone. I need to see you in person.”
“Well, if you say so. I really wished you could have just told me on the phone.” Kobby said.
“What a shame? Can you come over now then?” Nana Ekua asked politely.
“Hmmmm, is it that urgent?” Kobby asked casually.
“Yes, but if you can’t make it, I guess it has to wait till you come back from your trip. ” Nana Ekua urged on.
“Will call you later if I can make it.” Kobby said unenthusiastically.
“Hope to see you soon. Love you.” Nana Ekua intoned.
“I have to go.” Kobby said and hung up.
Nana Ekua smiled to herself and lay down in the sofa. She was happy they had not argued this time. She wished for nothing but getting back with her husband. And she thought about how Kobby would take the news. She knew it was a fifty-fifty chance. He would either like it or hate it and she was ready for whatever happened.
Shortly afterward sleep engulfed her. She slept for hours for once since she left her matrimonial home.

Nana Ekua woke up with a start.
She looked around her and realised she had been dreaming. Her heart thudded loudly in her chest. Sweat poured down her face. She wiped off the sweat with her hands.
She was frightened. What was the meaning of this? Why such a dream? She asked herself many times. She never believed in dreams but this one troubled her. Nana Ekua got up and walked to the living room window. The sun was setting. She walked over to the phone and dialled.
“Hello Roselyn,” Nana Ekua managed to say worriedly.
“Hi Nana, is there a problem? You sound troubled,” Roselyn said, sounding worried.
“Yes, I am troubled. Maybe I’m being childish but I can’t help it. I had this dream and it has unsettled me greatly. I needed to speak to someone,” Nana Ekua said.
“Okay, I’m a bit free now so why don’t you start by telling me what you dreamt about?”
“I don’t know, but somehow I happened to be in a long room with you, two nurses and Kobby. After a while you asked to speak to Kobby in private. You stepped aside with him and whispered something to him. He walked back to me with a long face and told me there were some complications.
He said you were still observing the situation for a while and if there was no change I would have to go under the knife. I wasn’t troubled because I knew I would be in the best of capable hands. You then left the room with Kobby and left me with the nurses. I don’t know but I think I drifted off in sleep or something because when I came to I saw that there was only one nurse with me and she had a long knife in her hand and was trying to cut me open…Then I woke up,” Nana Ekua narrated.
“Well, that is some dream. Honestly, I don’t think you should worry about it. It is normal for some women to have terrible dreams and nightmares when they are expecting. Most of the time their worst fears and worries translate into dreams so I suggest you take things easy and don’t let it get to you,” Roselyn advised.
“Hmmm, I will try. Thanks you for listening anyway,” Nana Ekua said.
“You are always welcome,” Dr. Aidoo replied.
Nana Ekua hung up and walked out into the compound and examined the flowers one after the other. She went into the kitchen and saw the serviceable house-help tidying up after dinner.
Suddenly, Nana Ekua felt lonely.
She missed Kobby so much. It was a pity he was not with her to share her joy of becoming a mother. They had waited so much for this. She missed his voice; she missed his touches and kisses. How was she supposed to live without him?
The doorbell rang just then, interrupting her thoughts. Ekua wondered who it could be. Kobby hadn’t called and it was kind of late so she had accepted the fact that he wasn’t coming. She got up and opened the door to see Kobby neatly dressed standing in the doorway making her heart miss a beat. She threw her arms around him and kissed him passionately, but he remained rigid and unresponsive.
Finally, she stepped back and ushered him inside. Kobby took a seat still dazed by the kiss he had just received.
Nana Ekua went for a bottle of red wine from the mini bar and set it on the centre table. She poured a drink for both of them and offered Kobby a glass. He reluctantly took it.
“What are we celebrating, if I may ask?” Kobby shot at her.
“Hmmm, I’m just happy to see you. It’s been a while and I’ve missed you a lot. That is a good reason to celebrate, right?”
“It’s good to see you too but can you be snappy about what you needed to tell me? I don’t plan to stay for long,” Kobby said uncomfortably.
The kiss had invoked all the pent up feelings he had fought so hard to keep at bay. He had to fight so hard not to take her in his arms and show her just how much he had missed her.
“Well, since this is your first time here, I don’t think it would hurt if I showed you around,” Nana Ekua said.
“Do we really have to do that?” Kobby asked, perplexed.
Nana Ekua took his hand and dragged him to the kitchen.
He was impressed about how orderly and neat it looked just as she kept theirs.
Still holding his hand, she took him to the study, the washrooms, the guest room, the living area and to the bedroom.
Kobby fell in love with the bedroom immediately. Nana Ekua has decorated it just like the one they shared in his house. It was as if he was in his bedroom. Memories of their wild lovemaking and other wonderful times flooded his mind.
He let go of Ekua’s hand and drew her towards him. He kissed her deeply and told her he had missed her. Nana Ekua gently squeezed his nipples and he moaned with pleasure. Soon they were all over each other with such passion and need that none had felt for a long time.
Clothes flew in the air as they both explored each other’s body with kisses and caresses amidst cries of joy and moans of ecstasy as they made sweet love.
They both drifted off to sleep afterwards locked in each other’s arms but by the time Nana Ekua woke up Kobby was gone.
