EPISODE 14
A chime of the doorbell brought Nana Ekua out of her reveries.
She walked reluctantly to the door and opened it.
Stanley stood in the doorway elegantly dressed.
Nana Ekua invited him in.
Stanley walked in with caution. He looked around the living room with impressed eyes.
“Make yourself comfortable,” Nana Ekua said.
“Thanks, dear. It’s a very nice place you have here. This goes to tell how big you’ve made it in life. I must say I am not surprised though; you always had that excellent touch. I am so proud of you, Nana Ekua,” Stanley said, still looking from one corner to the other.
“I’ll go get my purse,” Nana Ekua said and walked to the bedroom.
She came back to find Stanley admiring one of the wall paintings.
“Shall we go now?” Nana Ekua said nervously.
She was feeling uncomfortable going out with Stanley. She thought again about the whole thing. It wasn’t such a great idea to have invited Stanley, a guy who had had a crush on her during their secondary school days, to accompany her to a party. Besides, this was the first time she was going out since her separation from Kobby and she didn’t want people to have the wrong impressions when they saw her with a guy at a party.
“I can’t seem to find pictures of that memorable day around. Where are some of your wedding pictures? I want to have a look at the man who succeeded in melting your metal heart,” Stanley said jealously.
“Oh, they must be around here somewhere. This is a new place and we’ve not finished setting it up yet. We are running late. Let’s get going. I don’t want Roselyn to think that I am not coming,” Nana Ekua said, hating the fact that she had to lie.
She hated lying, especially about Kobby.
Stanley looked at his watch and admitted they were late.
Nana Ekua checked on her son, who was fast asleep and took off with her date for the evening.
Stanley found a place near Roselyn’s residence and parked. He came out of the car and opened the door for her. She stepped out and felt a knot in her stomach when she looked up at the house. She always got that feeling when something unpleasant or unexpected was going to happen.
They walked gracefully to the entrance and were ushered in by the houseboy who on this occasion could pass for a professional attendant.
Everyone stared when they made their entrance. It was as if time was suspended for a while. She imagined a thousand and one eyes on them and felt a bit faint with the attention.
Stanley whispered into her ears to calm her and she smiled sweetly.
Then she saw him.
Her heart stopped beating almost immediately. Kobby was standing in one corner of the room with a beautiful young lady who has her arm around his waist and was chattering about something. She realised Kobby’s attention was on her and blushed. The young lady noticed that his attention had shifted from her and followed his gaze.
“Those two are a rare couple, don’t you think?” Tonita asked, admiring Nana Ekua’s beauty and elegance.
Kobby did not say anything. Tonita repeated her statement, this time a little louder.
“What… what did you say?” Kobby asked with sadness in his voice.
“What in heaven’s name are you thinking about?” Tonita asked impatiently.
“Oh, please pardon me, but I felt a sharp pain in my heart a while ago. What did you say?”
“I said that lady is really beautiful and that her husband is a lucky man, no wonder he walks with her with all that pride on his face,” Tonita said sarcastically knowing very well who the lady was.
Nana Ekua walked with her escort to Roselyn and her husband who were exchanging pleasantries with some of the guests who had obviously just arrived. Finally, the other guests moved away and Nana Ekua greeted and wished Roselyn and her husband well. Roselyn seemed to be enjoying herself and Nana Ekua was happy for her.
They moved away and joined the other guests.
Nana Ekua listened to Stanley as he talked about his marriage and the eventual divorce with little interest.
Her mind was somewhere else.
The young lady with Kobby was excited about something and she kept talking and talking to her Kobby.
Nana Ekua wished she could hear what she was saying. Who was she? What was she doing with her husband? Were they in love?
Stanley asked to be excused because he saw an old pal he wanted to say hello to.
Nana Ekua suddenly felt exposed.
She felt like all eyes were on her. A hand grabbed her from behind and she turned immediately.
Roselyn held her by the left hand and drew her to the kitchen.
“I’m sorry, Nana Ekua. I didn’t know Kobby was going to be here,” Roselyn explained.
“Oh, you don’t have to be sorry, it’s nothing really. I guess I was a little uncomfortable when I saw him with another woman but it stopped there. Besides, he doesn’t want anything to do with me. This is your day, Roselyn, relax and have fun. I will be fine. I won’t get worked up over nothing,” Nana Ekua said unconvincingly.
“The lady is Eben’s sister. I don’t think there is anything serious going on between them. I would have heard about it by now. She is kind of close to Eben. She tells him everything. Try not to worry too much.” Roselyn explained.
“Like I said, stop worrying about me. I am the Iron Lady, remember? I can take anything. Let’s join the others. Stanley must be worried,” Nana Ekua said.
Roselyn and Nana Ekua moved back to the reception hall but Stanley was still talking to his pal.
Nana Ekua went outside the house and walked to Stanley’s car. She called the house to check on her son. The boy was still sleeping.
She leaned against the car with her eyes closed.
She had felt a sharp pain in her heart when she saw Kobby with another woman. Instantly, she was jealous and it took a Herculean effort not to have confronted him. But she had no reason to do so. He didn’t want to be with her and it was time she let that sink into her heart and soul. She needed to get over him or she’d do something very stupid one of these days.
“Ekua,” Kobby’s voice broke into her thoughts.
“Hi,” she said, wiping tears from her eyes and turning slowly to face him.
“Are you alright? You looked kind of pale back in there,” he asked, full of concern.
“Yes, I’m okay,” she said in a shaky voice.
“Were you crying?” he asked sadly, looking into her moist eyes.
“No, I am fine, really,” she replied, trying to convince him.
“You look good in that outfit, though,” Kobby said.
“Thanks,” she responded sadly.
Nana Ekua looked at the man standing before her; the man she had loved and still loved unconditionally.
She gawked at the man who had painted her life with all the beautiful colours there was and who had also been the cause of the darkness in her life. The same man who had hurt her like no other. She noticed he had lost a little weight and reasoned it might be because he had to study for his exams, or maybe he was working too hard. She could see sadness in his eyes too.
“How are your mother and sister?” Nana Ekua managed to say, breaking the silence and the uneasiness it brought with it.
“They are fine, I guess. I haven’t been to see them in a while. But I know they are fine,” Kobby replied.
“I can see you’ve recovered fully from your domestic accident, have you put on a few pounds? Or my eyes are playing tricks on me?” Kobby said vaguely.
“Yes. I think so,” Ekua answered uneasily.
“How have you been?” Nana Ekua enquired, totally changing the subject.
“So-so. I have survived but I have to admit it has not been easy,” Kobby said bitterly.
Nana was glad for his honesty.
“There you are,” Stanley’s voice broke into their conversation as he walked up to them.
“Hi,” he said, turning to Kobby.
Kobby didn’t respond.
“I have been looking all over for my beautiful date,” Stanley said, observing the tense environment.
He felt he had interrupted something and was alarmed immediately.
“Did I interrupt something?” Stanley asked.
“Okay, Ekua, I will see you around,” Kobby said and walked back inside in anger.
Stanley waited for a while for Nana Ekua to say something but she just stood there with her arms folded in front of her apparently angry at his intrusion.
“Is everything alright?” Stanley asked with genuine concern.
“Yes. Everything is fine. Can you take me home?” Nana Ekua replied.
“Ah, but we just got here. Are you sure you want to leave?” Stanley asked confused.
“I’m kind of enjoying myself.”
“Yes, I want to go home,” Nana Ekua replied.
“Did I by any chance miss something? Did that guy offend you?” Stanley pushed on.
“Please, can we just leave this place?” Nana Ekua said painfully.
“Okay, as you wish, my Queen of the night. I just wanted to be of help,” Stanley said and unlocked his car.
They drove in silence for a long while.
“If I were your husband, I would have murdered someone tonight,” Stanley said without taking his eyes off the road.
“Why’s that?” Nana Ekua asked.
“The way you looked at that guy, if I didn’t know better, I would say you are in love with him,” Stanley explained.
Nana Ekua remained quiet.
“Are you having problems with your husband? Is that why you are growing fond of another man?” he asked.
Nana Ekua did not answer.
“I respect you, Nana Ekua, but I will urge you to be very careful. I know it’s your life but you never know what a jealous husband could do,” Stanley advised.
Nana Ekua still did not utter a word.
Stanley did not get why she was not saying anything.
Nana Ekua’s apartment soon came into view. She thanked him for taking her and asked to call it a night since she was not feeling too well. She bid him good night briefly with a peck on his cheek and hurried inside.
Stanley waited till she had entered the house and left rather downhearted.
