EPISODE 15
Kobby tossed several times in bed.
He had been this restless for the past couple of weeks. He got out of bed and walked dejectedly to the bathroom and took a long cold shower and went back to the bedroom hoping sleep would do him a favour by engulfing him. Kobby lay down for hours but sleep eluded him. The events of two weeks ago had unsettled him greatly. He stared continually at the ceiling in deep thought.
The restlessness started when he saw Nana Ekua at the reception party for Tonita’s brother in the company of another man. It then dawned on him that he would never make it through life without her. In his anger and jealousy, he had wanted to walk to her and take her back home. He realised then how much he needed her.
He had wanted to talk to her for hours about his undying love for her. And then he decided to deal with the problem that had separated them. There were so many things he had wanted to do when he saw her. He had wanted to talk to her about so many things but Tonita and the stranger she brought constantly interrupted them before he could say or do anything that night.
He still remembered how beautiful she looked when she made her entrance. Kobby had been proud of the fact that all that goodness and beauty was in fact his. He had been proud of how everybody stared and admired her and he knew he would have been the happiest man on earth if he had been her escort even for that night. But she had come with another guy, a stranger! That was the only thing that stopped him from taking her into his arms.
After the party he tried to get some quality time alone with her but all efforts proved futile. A day after the party he drove to her house for the first time since the night of passion they shared after the separation, hoping to end all the misery but before he could make the final turn to the house he had seen her with the same stranger going for a strolling casually along the road. She had had a baby strapped in front of her and was laughing about something the stranger said.
He stopped abruptly and turned away unnoticed with a shock so profound, a pain so solid, that he had almost collapsed.
His jealousy reached unbelievable heights that day. He got out of the car and tried to go after them. On second thought he declined and walked back to his car. He fought to curbed the urge to literally murder the stranger. He sat in his car for hours without knowing what line of action to take, and he thought about the baby.
Was the baby his? Was Nana Ekua in a relationship with that guy? Had he been the mystery caller? Was it true that she was seeing this guy? Kobby asked himself these and many other questions. He thought about events leading to the separation. He knew deep down in his heart that maybe he had been too irrational and had let his emotions control him, but things went too fast and his insecurity had taken the best of him.
Maybe he could have handled it differently, maybe he should have really gotten to the bottom of the abyss to see what lurked there! As he had driven away later, his heart had been filled with a pain so deep that he could barely breathe. It dawned on him that he had taken the love of his life for granted, and indeed he was on the verge of losing her forever … if he hadn’t already!
Kobby got out of bed and walked to the living room. His eyes fell on the huge photograph that hanged on the wall facing the bedroom and he smiled. He walked into his study and sank onto the chair behind the desk.
His eyes again fell on their wedding picture, this time in a smaller frame. He picked it up and traced a hand on the lips that intoxicated him every time he touched or kissed them. He held the picture to his heart and heard the loud thuds of his heart.
“God, I love you Ekua, and I miss you so,” he said whispered with a painful lump in his throat.
With the framed picture still clutched to his heart he walked to the living room and sank into the sofa. He stretched himself on the sofa and recalled the events leading to their wedding day.
Kobby remembered the day he met her.
He thought of the wonderful times they shared together. He thought of the jokes, the kisses, the shouts, the tears and the thrills they shared.
A particular event he dwelt on was the day before the wedding. His family forbade him to see Nana Ekua until the wedding day. They convinced him that it was for good luck and rich blessings. Besides, he thought Nana Ekua needed enough rest since she’d been stressed out for the past weeks organising the big day.
He called her more than ten times that day to make sure she was alright. After the last call, which was around eight in the evening they both agreed to call it a day. Kobby then took his bath and went to bed. The constant ring of his cellular phone made him get out of bed. It was his bride-to-be, Nana Ekua and she was very hysterical because she couldn’t find her bridal shoes.
Kobby sympathised with her for he knew the lengths she went to get those exquisite pair of shoes just for the occasion and understood why she was that hysterical.
He tried for hours before he was able to convince her that the shoes didn’t matter. He assured her that he would marry her in anything. In fact, he wouldn’t mind if she walked to the aisle with him barefooted or in bathroom slippers. He impressed upon her that it wasn’t what she wore that was important but the fact that they would be together so that he could wake up and go to bed everyday with her. After what seemed an eternity they both agreed to call it a night.
First thing Kobby did the next morning was to call her. She had found the shoes sitting at her doorstep in the morning and was grateful. A cousin had played a prank on her!
Memories of their wedding day were still very fresh in his mind, as though it happened just yesterday. He recalled arriving at the reception hall of the biggest hotel at the time in Accra. Most of the guests had arrived. His best man took him to his seat and left to pick up his bride.
Shortly afterwards his bestman arrived with Nana Ekua and her party. His heart missed a beat the moment he saw her. He had never seen such beauty in his entire life.
The ceremony had been simple but he would forever remember how peaceful he felt when he saw her on her father’s arm walking to him. He recalled the beautiful smile that played on Nana Ekua’s face that day. He remembered the vows they made to each other in front of all those witnesses.
Kobby opened his eyes and looked at the ring on his finger.
“This is a symbol of my love and faithfulness to you. Wear it all the time so that it would remind you of my vow to you in case you have doubts, for you will forever be my love,” he recalled Nana Ekua’s words as she slid the ring on his finger.
He recalled the vows he had made to her. He had promised her that day “to love and hold her till eternity.” He closed his eyes as if that would stop the pain he felt in his heart for dishonouring his wedding vows.
His problem had been the fact that he had acted rashly towards Nana Ekua when the mystery caller had called after he had seen Nana Ekua walk into the hotel that day. He should have taken his time to prove Nana Ekua’s guilt or otherwise before he acted so rashly.
He recalled Nana Ekua’s sweetness and the many pleasant surprises she had given him during their relationship.
And he recalled the day after their wedding day.
They had sneaked out of the hotel they were supposed to have spent their wedding night so that they could grace it all with a dinner the following day. They had driven straight to Memories Beach Resort and had arrived in the early hours of the day so they had gone to bed almost immediately in each other’s arms.
Lord, they had been too tired to consummate their marriage.
They had woken up in the late afternoon and had been hungry. They went downstairs to grab a bite and had rushed into town to get a few things since they did not take anything in their haste to get away. Incredibly, they returned from town around seven in the evening and had been exhausted but happy. They took a long bath interspersed with kisses and caresses.
Nana Ekua had complained of a pain in her ear when they decided to go to bed. It was something that worried her from time to time. She had a special prescription for it but she had not brought it with her.
Kobby rushed to the pharmacy shop at the ground floor of the Resort to get the prescribed medication. He had climbed the stairs to their suite three at a time. When he got there and realised the lights were out. He was very alarmed. He opened the door quickly and stepped in turning on the lights and wow, what a sight for sore eyes?
Standing a few inches to the bed in a see-through negligee was his wife. He saw her ruby nipples as they stood erect in the negligee and instantly stirred up the desire that stirred up inside him.
He dashed forward like lightning and took her in his arms, and he had kissed her with hunger and need only he could fathom. Nana Ekua had responded without holding anything back. Their clothes had flown around the room in no time and he had laid her gently on the bed. He kissed the insides of her thighs and she had moaned sweetly as he did so. He had climbed up slowly kissing her citadel, her navel, her ruby breasts and her sweet lips.
And he had been completely intoxicated by her caresses and kisses. He wanted her. He wanted her so badly. Kobby had lowered himself on her slowly and had sought for the entrance. Yes, he had frantically sought for the entrance to blissful island and she had sweetly directed him to heaven’s gate and to blissful island. He remembered how it felt to be……
A tap on his arm brought him abruptly to a sitting position. He stared at Tonita for a long time without uttering a word.
Tonita stared at Kobby in confusion.
“I let myself in when the bell went unanswered. I saw your car parked in the driveway and knew you were home,” she said and sat next to him.
Kobby realised he still had the framed photograph he had picked from the study in his hands. He lay it down behind him and turned to Tonita.
“I might have fallen asleep. How are you?” he asked uneasily.
“Fine. I can’t say the same for you though, can I?” she asked, critically examining him.
“I’m fine,” he said unconvincingly. “Just a bit tired from all the stress from work.”
Tonita kept looking at him with a glint of worry in her eyes.
“I am fine, really. I must’ve fallen asleep,” he emphasized, regaining his composure.
“So, how do you explain the strange noises you were making in your slumber?” Tonita asked suspiciously. “You were moaning with pleasure, as if you were making love.”
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” Kobby said, furious at her intrusion.
Tonita leaned over and picked the photograph she had seen him put away. She looked at it and smiled mischievously.
“So, this is what it’s all about, huh? You miss her, don’t you? I am curious though, what were you fantasising about?” she asked with sarcasm.
Kobby walked to the water dispenser and fetched a cupful.
Tonita followed him.
“Yes, the typical Kobby Amoah. Every time she comes up you walk away. You are always not in the mood to talk about her. Is there something I should know? Are you still in love with her? Is that why you never want to say anything when she comes up?” Tonita asked emotionally.
Kobby still did not answer.
“Don’t you think I at least have the right to know what’s going on? I love you. All I do is think about you all day and you are here thinking about that slut? Why, are you under some spell of some sort?” Tonita said, trying to make him feel guilty.
“Call her that again and I won’t be responsible for my actions. You are not a saint either, are you?”
Kobby shot back angrily.
“What are you talking about? Do you think all women are like your adulterous wife?” Tonita shot back to fuel his anger.
“No. I don’t think so. But I didn’t see my wife do anything, did I? You love me huh? You big liar!” Kobby said.
“Me, liar? What did I lie about? I love you and that is the truth.”
“Yes, I have heard you say that a hundred times but do you really love me?” he asked with sarcasm.
“What has come over you? If you don’t love me just tell me to the face and stop beating around the bush,” she shot back.
“I saw you kissing another guy the other day when I came by your house to surprise you. How do you explain that? Did you do that because you love me?” Kobby asked smiling.
“What do you mean by that? Do you think I am capable of something like that?” Tonita said tearfully.
“Cut the act, young lady, I know what I saw. Reggie, your childhood sweetheart, sought me out last week and we had a long chat so don’t come in here and behave as if you are an angel from God. I don’t begrudge you in any way. To tell you the truth I understand because true love strikes only once in a lifetime.
I guess you came in here to tell me you are getting married in a month but like a typical woman, you want the break-up to be the man’s fault. You could have just told me instead of going to all that trouble of acting. You are a lousy actor so don’t try it with me. Let me say this for the last time; whatever happened between Ekua and me is none of your business so leave her out of this. I don’t want to hear you use those words to describe her ever again,” Kobby spoke softly to calm his fists that were shaking in readiness to hit.
Tonita was quiet for a long while.
“Kobby, I meant it when I said I loved you. If you can give me one reason to stay with you, I will. If you give me your word that you would love and marry me, I would stay,” Tonita implored.
“Tonita, I am sorry I can’t make any promises. I think it’s best if we end it here and now. You have to concentrate on Reggie. He loves you and from what I have seen you love him too,” Kobby said.
“Are you saying you don’t love me?” Tonita asked, embittered.
“I never lied about that fact, did I? I loved your company and the friendship we shared but I had no romantic feelings for you. You knew that so don’t pretend it’s news to you. I wish you better luck than I got and I want you to know that I am grateful for all that you did for me,” Kobby said politely.
“I guess you are right. You never loved me the way I loved you. It hurts somehow but I can’t begrudge you. I have Reggie now and I am going to concentrate on making a success of our relationship. I must admit I’m still attracted to you. Whatever happens, I want you to know that you deserve to be happy. You are a cool guy. You deserve happiness and more,” Tonita said sadly.
Kobby walked to her and hugged her. He held her for a while and let go. She walked out of the room…and out of his life for good.
Left alone, Kobby stepped into the garden and examined the flowers. He admitted they had not been the same since Nana Ekua left. She had a way with flowers. He went from one flower to the other sniffing their fragrance. He came to the rose flower Nana Ekua loved so much, and he plucked one and sniffed it for a long time. It smelled so much like her. Kobby stared at the beautiful flower and it reminded him of his own life.
At one time, his life was full of light and now he was engulfed by total darkness. To him, the flower was even better off because if it got someone, anyone, who would give it time and care, it would bounce back to what it used to be. He couldn’t say the same for himself. He couldn’t imagine himself with anyone else. There was only one woman for him and it looked like he had lost her to someone else. He knew he had to to try and win her back. He had to start somewhere.
Kobby walked into the living room, picked his phone and dialled.
