The Last Kiss Episode 4 is running now…
EUNICE ANSAH-AGYEMAN
THE LAST KISS
EPISODE 4
Curtis looks into the dimly-lit blue sky.
The sun is up but not so bright as it used to be.
He has decided to bring Alicia to the beach, her favourite place in the world, to see if she will loosen up a bit.
He picks the most luxurious beach resort he knows.
The flowers, the breeze, the calm and serene environment makes one feel the presence of God every second of the day.
He is lying by the pool side with his hands laced behind his head.
He stares at Alicia standing at the seashore and throwing sea shells aimlessly into the big sea.
Curtis can tell she is not herself.
She has been like that for the past two weeks. The HIV test brouhaha has affected her so much.
For some reason, Alicia is behaving like she has the virus already even though the test results are not in yet.
She walks around as if there is an impending doom waiting to befall them.

Their intimacy has also suffered greatly.
They have made love only a couple of times in the past two weeks which is so unlike them. It is as if the test request has quenched the fire they both feel for each other.
He has seen Alicia googling for information on HIV and the last time he checked her search history, she has bookmarked a lot of sites on HIV/AIDS.
Alicia has said very little to him during the period.
She only replies to his queries with simple direct answers. She has even lost her care free and happy-always mood and that is really depressing him.
Curtis curses himself a million times.
He has acted all brave and calm but deep down he fears his silly exploits before meeting Alicia might have caused a problem. He has been so careless and irresponsible in the past. One thing is for sure, if he has infected Alicia with the deadly virus, he will never forgive himself.
She is an angel who deserves nothing but the best.
He goes over the tall list of women he has been with and feels remorse for his actions for once.
Out of the list of about twenty only a few were steady partners. Most of his sex life was casual then. It was like fulfilling a basic need. He meets a girl and if he wanted it, they will have sex by the time the day ended with no strings attached.
He had picked up a lot of his girls from the night clubs and other seedy places. He realizes now what a jerk he has been.
He gets up and walks over to her and wind his arms around her from behind.
“Hello beautiful, talk to me, will you? I really miss you and us.”
He spins her around and looks into her eyes which are moist with tears. He plants a kiss on her cheeks and sees a little colour on her sad face.
“Can I get a kiss for being the good husband you dreamt of?” he teases.
Alicia smiles making her face glow with all the sweetness in the world.
Curtis is happy for the reaction he gets. He has missed her lovely smile very much.
She moves into him and kisses him without holding anything back.
He teases her with his tongue and she responds with all the fervour she feels, letting go of her fears and anxieties.
“I want you to know that no matter what happens I will be here for you. If the worse happens, I don’t want you to shut me out. You will kill me if you do. My life will not be the same without you. I love you so much, Alicia. I love you more than words can ever say.”
“I love you more,” she whispers tremulously.
He kisses her again before she can say anything more.
He carries her into their room and puts her gently on the bed.
And then he takes in her beauty as the little light from the sun make her glow radiantly.
His lips find hers again, and again and again.
He feels like he can’t get enough of her.
She feels like she can’t get enough of him.
Their hands explore each other’s body filling them with a desire so strong they both feel they are drowning in their love for each other.
They end up making love in their luxurious bedroom of the luxurious resort a while later.

Alicia wakes with a start.
She moves slowly from Curtis’ arms.
She looks down at his naked body and smiles.
Acutely, she remembers the passion they just shared and feels like she wants more. Seeing him all naked and sleeping with such abandon, she is sure he will not hear a volcano erupt.
Somehow, Curtis always has a calming effect on her.
He always knows what to say or do to cheer her up. He has been the lighthouse of her life ever since their paths crossed. He has been the rock that has formed the foundation of her happiness and she will not want anything to ruin that.
Alicia picks up the used condom from the floor and pads to the bathroom.
She has insisted on Curtis using a condom ever since she was asked to test for HIV. She has read that it is the only known option that can prevent infection and re-infection in case one or both of them were indeed HIV positive.
She disposes off the condom and draws the bath.
She steps in and lie in it with her eyes closed savouring the sweets moments and memories.
She is trying to be happy; after all she is with the love of her life but she can’t seem to shake the HIV scare off. She is convinced she has it. She has read extensively on it in the past week and thinks she must be positive.
She thinks of how she could have gotten it.
Curtis joins her in the bath just about then and starts tickling her with his toes.
She still keeps her eyes closed.
They bath in silence afterwards and get ready to see the doctor.
Alicia insists on driving that day so Curtis let her.
Curtis puts his hands on her laps and tells her she is sexy when she is driving and he thinks it will be a good idea if she drives whenever they are out together. He explains that will give him the opportunity to watch her breasts wiggle on the ramps.
Alicia smiles and draws one hand to hit him playfully.
She pulls up in the parking lot of the hospital a few minutes later.

They walk straight to Dr. Boakye’s Consulting Room since they arrived just on time for their appointment and there are no other patients waiting. Dr. Sam is also there.
They take their seats after exchanging pleasantries and Alicia feels a sharp pain in her heart immediately.
“You are both welcome to my consulting room today. Your test results are ready. I have it all sealed up. I wanted you two to open them yourselves. Whatever happens, I want you both to know that there is hope even if you test positive. Sure, the stigmatization and its unhealthy consequences will be your portion but people with HIV can live normal lives. There are a lot of useful alternatives in treatments. “Dr. Boakye reassures them.
Dr. Sam, the Clinical psychologist clears his throat.
“The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV, weakens your immune system so it can’t fight off common germs, viruses, fungi, and other invaders. It’s the virus that causes AIDS. Someone with HIV can get sick from things that don’t usually affect people, and people with AIDS tend to get certain uncommon diseases and illnesses.
Anyone can get HIV. Both men and women can spread the virus. Having HIV does not always mean that you have AIDS. It can take many years for people with the virus to develop AIDS.
HIV and AIDS can’t be cured, but the medications available today help people stay healthy and live longer.
You can get HIV when an infected person’s body fluids including blood, semen, fluids from the vagina, or breast milk get into your blood. That can happen through broken skin or the linings in your mouth, anus, penis, or vagina. People commonly get HIV from having unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing a needle to take drugs and infected needles used for a tattoo or in body piercing.
Mothers with HIV can also pass on the virus to their babies, before or when they’re born or through breastfeeding.
It’s also possible to get HIV from a blood transfusion from an infected person.
HIV, when ignored or not treated advances to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS.)
People with AIDS can get other infections very easily. These “opportunistic infections” aren’t a problem for someone with a healthy immune system.
Fortunately, we’ve come a long way from the days when a diagnosis of HIV equalled a death sentence. Today, a variety of treatments can significantly slow down, and sometimes stop altogether, the progress of HIV to AIDS.
When you test positive, your doctor will start you on a treatment plan with different types of anti-HIV drugs. This is called ART, for antiretroviral therapy, and each medicine is an ARV, or antiretroviral.
Taking the right drugs at the right time, every single day is the key to living a healthy longer life.
If you don’t, the virus can change into a strain that is harder to treat.
However, these medicines can cause side effects like diarrhoea, nausea, rash or yellowing skin, strange dreams or insomnia, dizziness, weak muscles, or trouble concentrating, losing or gaining body fat, high cholesterol, heart problems and brittle bones.
Newer HIV medications only need to be taken once a day. But these may not work on treatment-resistant strains.
If you have AIDS, you’ll probably also take drugs to combat and prevent opportunistic infections.
Your doctor can check how well your treatment is working by measuring the amount of HIV in your blood, which is called your viral load. The goal is to get it so low that most lab tests can’t detect it, less than 20 copies in a millilitre. This doesn’t mean the virus is gone or cured; it means the medication is working and you should keep taking it.
The good news is that most people who get the right treatment will do well and live healthy lives for years. Starting ART soon after infection is key.
If you take good care of yourself by building a good relationship with an experienced doctor specializing in HIV and AIDS, sticking to your HIV medication schedule, and getting regular lab work to catch any problems early, you will surely do well as an HIV positive patient.
The best treatment however, is your attitude. You decide if it makes or breaks you. You decide if it defines your existence. You can live a healthy normal life if you take things seriously. You rule, that’s all I want you to remember if you test positive to the test.”
Curtis is getting bored with all that lecture as if they had tested positive already. Surprisingly, Alicia is calm and attentive.
“Can we have the results please. I think you should have allowed us to open it before all that lecture,” Curtis says, a trifle irritably.
“I can share your discomfort gentleman, but it’s good you know the basic things about HIV before you know your status. That way, you would be one step ahead. I’m going to hand over the envelopes to you now. I want to assure you of our undying support should it happen that you would need our services. All the best to the both of you.” Dr. Boakye adds.
Alicia pulls the envelope with her name on it from the Doctor and tears off the seal. She scans through hurriedly.
“Nooooooooooooooooooooo!” she screams.
Curtis turns to her immediately and sees tears falling down her face. He uses his hands to wipe her tears and pulls her into his arms blaming himself for her misery.
“It’s okay, sweetheart. I got you!”
Alicia is wailing now.
“No, this can’t be. No! ” Alicia repeats as her body is racked with tears.
He guides her to the car and stays in it for a long while.
He really feels bad about the whole thing. He is very sure he has infected her.
Dr. Sam rans to the car before they leave and hands Curtis his envelop.
He insists he opens it but Curtis tells him there is no need.
He tells him he has infected Alicia with the virus. He explains that he had read that it is very easy for men to pass it on to their partners than women.
The Doctor tells him it is prudent they contact their past sexual partners. He said it is necessary they all get tested so they won’t spread the virus if they have it.
Curtis puts the envelop in the glove compartment and starts the engine.
The Doctor hands him another paper.
“These are your appointment schedules. You need to start treatment ASAP. You are to come back tomorrow at eleven in the morning. You can beat this with the right attitude. Don’t lose hope.”
Curtis drives off without saying another word.
He reaches for Alicia’s hand when they are out of the hospital and assures her of his endless love.
By the time they get home, Alicia’s eyes are swollen from all the crying.
