THE LAST KISS
EPISODE 5
It is the next day!
Alicia is still in bed.
This is so unlike her.
She is usually up by five in the morning.
It is eight now and she is still wrapped up in bed with no desire to get out of bed.
She has not slept much the previous night.
The lab report has sent her thinking and grieving.
She has cried, cursed and racked her brains for solutions for her present predicament.
Testing HIV positive has never been on her life’s agenda.
She has planned her life so well and so far, everything has worked out just fine.
She has looked forward to getting married, raising a family and living happily ever after.
Alicia is aware life has its own dark moments but this is too much to chew.
“HIV positive just after a month of marriage?” she mutters.

“My Angel, it is well. We can beat this. Let’s not worry too much.” Curtis replies.
“I called in sick today and sent a message to Linda Ansong, your colleague that you won’t be able to come to work today.”
Alicia turns to face the wall without saying anything.
Her mind is whirling in circles. She feels the heat warming her brains from too much thinking.
How on earth did I end up with HIV?
She asks herself so many times.
It is not like she is the careless type who dated a lot of guys before Curtis.
She’s known four guys in her life before she met Curtis. She has been intimate with only one.
Granted, she was with Richie for over four years and knew he had flings here and there but HIV? That was too deep to fathom.
She reads a lot on the disease when she couldn’t sleep in the night. She has googled and moved from site to site looking for information, something that can narrow down the source of her problem and give her poor brain some relief.
Curtis moves closer to her on the bed and wraps his arm around her.
“Sweetheart, stop fretting. It’s not the end of the world. Let’s find ways of moving forward with this knowledge and enjoy what we have now. I will always love you and only you. I fixed us some breakfast when you dozed off a while ago. We have to eat to stay healthy if we are to beat this. Get up, shake off the blues and bring back my Alicia. I miss her dearly.”
“It’s not that easy, Curtis. Knowing you have a disease that has no cure and that could kill you eventually.”
“I know, dear. I also know that there’s hope that a cure could be found any day and all these helplessness and stress would be a thing of the past. Honey, I just want you to live with me. We have life now, let’s do something with it. Come with me, let’s eat something before our appointment today.”
“Did you even check your lab result? I don’t remember you opening the envelope.”
“There is no need, Alicia. Once you have it, I have it too. I’m more convinced that I might have infected you.”
“Why would you say a thing like that?”
“I think I told you some time ago that I hadn’t been a saint. I’ve never been lucky with women until I met you. Most of the women I dated in the past moved on with wealthier guys, leaving me broken. After I saw the woman I thought was mine in bed with one of our lecturers, I never committed to any relationship again. I was just sleeping with girls and leaving them out in the lurch. Maybe this is my punishment for hurting all those innocent girls.”
“You still have to check, if you are negative, I want a divorce. I don’t want you saddled with this. You can’t possibly wait on me to die. You have to move on. Where’s your envelope. I want to see it.”
“Are you listening to yourself? Did you ever love me, Alicia?” Curtis blurts out, hurt by her complete disregard for his feelings.
Alicia hears from his tone of voice that he is very hurt by her suggestion. But he has to look at things from her perspective. He has to understand she wants only what’s best for him.
“Curtis, I love you. I’ve never loved anyone as much as I do you. I know for a fact that I will never love another the way I love you but you have to understand me. You don’t deserve this if I’m the only one who’s infected. You deserve better than this life sentence of living with me when I can die any day, any time, without warning. My love, you are young, you need to move on. This is my cross; I have to carry it. If you are HIV negative, I don’t expect you to stay with me. I will let you go because I love you that much.”
“If you love me as much as you say you do, you would want me to stay. I will want you to stay if I test positive to whatever under the sun, you know why? Because I know with you around me, I can take just about anything. I don’t want to live without you, Alicia. I need you in my life, HIV positive or not.”
“I’m going to die Curtis. I don’t want you to go through that pain of watching me die. I just can’t bear that.”
Curtis senses the despair in her voice. He pulls her closer. The thought of losing Alicia unsettles him greatly. But that is a possibility. He is positive with the right attitude and knowledge of what to do, they will do just fine.

“Look, let’s live a day at a time. We will cross that bridge when we get to it. Let’s not worry ourselves with what should be or should have been. Let focus on the days, months or years ahead. I’ve read tons and tons of articles on HIV, it’s not the monster we make it out to be. Let’s focus on what we can do with the little time we have. We can have the boy you’ve always wanted for starters.”
“Curtis? Like seriously? Don’t make me laugh. I’m definitively not in the mood, please.”
“Please activate the happy mood for me. I want just a tiny smile from you. I miss that.”
Curtis pulls her cheeks outwards with his two hands to make a smiley face.
Alicia responds with a sweet and beautiful smile.
“Now, that’s what I’m talking about! I really like it when you smile like that. I do love you, my beauty queen Alicia, nothing will ever change that.”
“Love you too, Curtis, more than you can ever imagine.”
He pulls her to the kitchen to dish out the food he prepared for breakfast and practically drags her to the dining-table and forces her to take a bite.
“You know, nothing has to change. Let’s live everyday as if it is the last day we’ve got together. I’m going to kiss you every day thinking it would be the last kiss. So, brace yourself.”
“Hmmm, I don’t know how you can stay so positive in a time like this. You are such an incredible person. I don’t know what I would do without you. I know it will not be easy, but let’s give it our best shot. Thanks for always lifting my spirits. It means an awful lot to me.”
Curtis reaches across the table for her hand.
He holds both of her hands in his and reassures her a million times that they can make it if they stay on top of their challenge. He stresses that all that is needed is to take in accurate knowledge of HIV and live by them.
Curtis draws up the bath after breakfast and slips down with her in the bathtub caressing her perfect figure. He traces a hand on her spine sending shivers of desire through her.
He turns her head towards his and kisses her gently.
Curtis can taste her pain, despair and fear in her mouth.
He slips under her and make her sit on him in the tub wrapping his arms around her breasts and fondling them simultaneously. He kisses her neck, her earlobes and traces a line down her navel. Pleasantly, he feels her shuddering against him.
Alicia moans with pleasure and for a moment she forgets the lab test, the results and her finding out her status.
Curtis reaches for a condom from the cabinet stand just beside the bathtub and tears it open in frenzy.
“You keep condoms in the bathroom?” Alicia asks surprised.

“Ready for ‘sweet war’ anytime, my dear. Read that is the only way we would stop re-infecting ourselves so I put condoms everywhere in the house. I have some in the kitchen too.”
“Hmmm, you don’t say. You really have it all planned huh? Now you are my expert on HIV. Love that anyway. Take me now, my Prince. Making love to you always calms my damn nerves. My citadel cries for your gentle bullying!”
“Hmmm, let her wait a bit, this Prince is not done with torturing your body with desire just yet.”
Several minutes later, they both lie spent and fulfilled, glued to each other.
Alicia knows she cannot live without Curtis especially in these trying times.
He is the only one who can make her sane in all the craziness around her.
