The Last Kiss is rolling…
THE LAST KISS
Curtis comes awake with a start.
He might have dosed off for a brief moment. The earphones are still in his ears and the file is still playing. He can hear Cynthia’s voice:
“Get out of your room? You are going to make love to me before I leave so make it easy for yourself. Do you want it the hard way or the easy way? You used to like making love to me, remember? And when you come, it almost feels divine because you scream out my name. Make me yours again, Curtis. Just this once and I will be out of your life forever.”
Curtis continues to listen and then he starts laughing, tears of joy coming into his eyes. Alicia rubs her eyes and asks what’s so funny.
“You know, I can’t believe I have the whole Cynthia saga on tape. I just found this long recording on my phone and decided to listen and possibly delete it because I need extra space to update mortal combat. Then I find out that recording holds the key to my freedom. The whole truth is here in black and white.”
He unplugs the earphones so Alicia can hear what is playing. The couple listen to the recording to its last bit.
“This is good news, Curt. I hope the court can accept this as evidence. I always knew nothing happened between you two. Damn, I feel like kicking her face in right now.”
Curtis gets out of bed after putting on the bedside lamp.[stextbox id=”alert” caption=”WARNING”]Exlusive Content to aaron-ansah-agyeman.com Do not copy or share on any other site. Do not share on any WhatsApp, Facebook or Social Media page. ONLY SHARE THE LINKS TO THE STORY[/stextbox]
He pulls on his morning robe and slips his feet into his slippers.
“Where are you going to, Curt?”
“You go back to sleep. I’m going to call Jude Albert.”
“At this time? Please let the guy sleep. You can call him first thing in the morning. You can send him the audio ahead of time. Come here and sleep beside me. I want you to hold me while I sleep.”
Curtis reluctantly sits on the bed. He looks at the time on his phone and admits it’s pretty late to call his married friend. His call will wake Albert’s wife too and they may not be able to go back to sleep after that. He sets his phone down and lies beside his wife, wrapping his arms around her.
Alicia falls asleep a while later but Curtis’ eyes are open through the entire night. He is relieved he will be around to see his child when he or she arrives. He is however not sure if it is a done deal with the recording. When it comes to court cases, until the verdict is read, you can never be sure of anything.
Early the next morning Curtis and Jude Albert speak at length on the phone. Curtis has sent him the audio and he has listened to it. He is positive it is the break he has been looking for. They both agree to meet in town that morning before the case comes up in court later in the day.
Alicia fixes him his favourite breakfast and the two take a quick shower together.
Alicia sets the table for breakfast and make Curtis eat as she eats too. Curtis is in a big rush but does not fail to notice Alicia is a bit pale than she used to be. He looks at her for a long while as they eat and wonders if the pregnancy is having a toll on her.
“Are you feeling alright, Ally?”
“I’m fit like a horse. Why do you ask?”
“I don’t know, you look a little pale.”
“I guess it’s part of the pregnancy syndrome. They did a blood count when I was admitted and the blood level was good. Doc Ray thinks there’s nothing to worry about.”
“When is your next appointment?”
“I need to talk to the doctor man to man.”
“What’s going on with you, Curt? Man to man about what?”
“Just forget it. Are you sure you are fit to go out? The doctor gave you some days to rest. You don’t have to come with me if you are not up for it.”
“I’m coming with you. I feel fine. Stop treating me as if I’m sick or something. I’m only pregnant.”
“Yes, madam,” Curtis says, sarcastically.[stextbox id=”black” caption=”GRAB YOUR COMPLETE COPY”]

They both laugh and finish the rest of their meal in deep thoughts. They hurry to the car and set off.
The drive to the courthouse takes a little longer than expected. Jude Albert is already there when they arrive.
Jude Albert has secured the necessary ratification for the new evidence they have and now all that is left is wait till the case is called.
They sit in the mini restaurant on the ground floor and talk over coffee and pastries.
Alicia is feeling nauseous but controls it well.
The two men talk for close to an hour and then they make the trip upstairs to the courtroom.
The bailiff asks all to get to their feet as her Highness Judge Mina Hagan enters and takes her chair. The first case, a child custody case that has lingered since Curtis’ case has been brought in seems to be coming to a close that day.
The lawyers for the man and the ex-wife give their closing statements. It is evident from their submissions that the ex-wife has a problem with alcohol and is not a very good example for the child in question. The judge finally gives custody to the man with visiting rights to the woman for a year. She advices the woman to get help with the addiction in the meantime. She will be evaluated after the year to see how things pan out.
The lady breaks down in tears.
Curtis and Cynthia’s case is called and the judge turns to Jude Albert.
“I understand you have secured a ratification for the submission of key evidence in this matter. It better be good or I will not take very kindly to the time wasted.”
Jude Albert assures her the time spent in listening to his final evidence will not be wasted. He connects the phone to the central speakers in the courtroom.
The tape starts playing and the people gathered in the courtroom start to murmur.
The tape literally starts with Curtis expressing his love and endearment to his wife. He goes on to lament on the fact that he misses Alicia. There is a break in the recording, only the sound of heavy breathing can be heard. This goes on for about ten to fifteen minutes.
People around get impatient and the plaintiff’s lawyer gets up to call Jude Albert’s bluff.
Then, just as the Judge is going to question Jude Albert about what is going on, Curtis’ sleepy voice comes on asking in an angry voice what somebody is doing in his room.
Cynthia is heard telling him to make love to her and set her heart at rest.
Jude Albert smiles and looks over at Cynthia and Lawyer Bawuah.
Cynthia bows her head shamefully.
Her lawyer is boiling with so much anger now. He tries his best to get the Judge to stop the tape from playing but she will not have it.
He had his chance for an adjournment when her Highness summoned the two of them in his chamber before the hearing. Reluctantly, he agrees to Jude Albert presenting his evidence and there is no turning back now.
The courtroom is so quiet one could hear a pin drop as they listen to the scuffle and exchange of words between Curtis and Cynthia.
Judge Mina Hagan is so angry that she cannot sit still. How can anybody think he or she can come to the arms of the law for help on false allegations.
She calls the plaintiff to get on her feet.
“He never touched you that night, did he?”
“Your Honour, he …”
“Yes or no?”
Cynthia looks down her feet still trying to find something to counter what has come out. She plays with the idea of saying it happened later in her room when Curtis came to apologize for his actions but it looks like she will only be sinking deeper into trouble. The tape proves that she had wanted him to have her. She offered herself to him and crying rape meant she didn’t get what she wanted.
“Are you going to answer the question or I should go ahead and add that to your contempt charges?”
“Do I look like your mother? Counselor, you should teach your client to address me properly.”
“I’m sorry, Your Honour.”
“No, Your Honour,” Cynthia says in a rather low voice.
“I don’t want to lose my cool on this because you are very stupid to come to the law with a lie in the first place. What were you hoping for huh, to put an innocent person behind bars just because you didn’t get your way? You come here to waste the State’s time and money when there are life-threatening cases to be heard?
This case is dismissed, Mr. Owusu-Mensah, you are free to go. You can sue her for defamation of character and I will be glad to sit on that case. As for you, Ms. Cynthia Osei, you will refund Mr. Owusu’s legal and other expenses incurred for this case. You are charged with contempt of this court and will be liable to an amount of twenty thousand cedis since this is your first offense, in default you will serve a jail term of three months. Court is adjourned.”
Curtis and Alicia embrace, relieved that the problem with Cynthia is over.
Omar looks on with a broken soul. He has sold his soul to the devil herself and now he is aware he will never get his friendship with Curtis back.
Kobby comes over to hug Curtis with a big smile on his face. He sees Omar at a distance looking on and sees the hurt in his eyes. Omar has shot himself in the head and now even Kobby cannot tolerate such a betrayal.
Kobby embraces Alicia for the very first time since she was diagnosed HIV positive. He apologizes to her for being distant from her. He tells her he was scared for Curtis but he knows deep down she will not do anything to harm him intentionally.
Cynthia is marched out of court with handcuffs and taken to the cell until her Lawyer arranges to either pay the money to the state and Curtis at the instruction of the Judge.[stextbox id=”grey” caption=”BE OUR FRIEND“]
