SEASON 1: THE EMERGENCE
CHAPTER 6
Something In A Black Hoodie
Neji knew the rumours would definitely start making rounds, and people might start linking their evident signs of well-being with all sorts of crazy allegations, mostly evil juju.
She turned on her side and tried to go back to sleep, but the moment she closed her eyes she saw that horrible black-clad apparition in her dreams immediately swinging his staff at her, and she gasped with fear and opened her eyes again.
She turned on her back, feeling the dark shadows stealing on her, suddenly feeling apprehensive, wondering what was going on, and what was hidden in the house!
Who was that boy?
What price would he exact for the amazing things he had done for them?
Neji had always believed there was a price for everything, and even as she and her family lived on the astounding things the young man’s presence was causing to happen, she had always wondered about the hidden costs, and whether the miracles were from a good or evil source.
She couldn’t help but wonder how someone so incapacitated and who needed help so much should rather be the cause of healing them of their life-long ailments.

This time Neji sat up in bed with a moan, looking around her wildly, her fear escalating. Trembling, she got out of bed and walked to the lantern, and then she turned the wick up, making the flame flare brighter and completely illuminating the room.
She felt cold all of a sudden, and licked her parched lips with fear.
What was happening? Who was that man in black with the long pole? If it were just a nightmare, or a figment of her imagination, why did the strange phenomenon occur each time her eyes closed?
Was she in danger?
Was her family in danger?
Neji Helen walked over to the wardrobe, opened it, and pulled out a pullover. She pulled it down over her head and over her nightie. She pushed her feet into the slippers beside the bed, and then she took the lantern, opened the door, and stepped into the corridor.
Every night they put lanterns in the corridors for illumination, but when Neji came out of the door, the lanterns were all out, and thick darkness would have prevailed over her if it had not been the lantern she was holding.
She hesitated, her heart hammering with fear. This had never happened before, all the lanterns going off in the corridor. She could feel a cold air blowing around her, and for a moment she thought she heard whispers in the air.
She clamped her teeth together, and for a moment she almost went back into the room.
Neji was that scared!
But what if the young man was in some danger from that hideous thing in black who had been using the shiny end of the staff in his hand on the back of the hunchback?
What if that danger could be extended to her family?
Neji was not afraid of the strange physically-challenged young man in their house. If anything, she had become rather fond of him in a strange protective way, and she didn’t want anything bad to happen to him.
She mustered courage and took one trembling step after the other until she came to the landing and looked down the dark stairs.
All the lanterns downstairs were out too.
She could barely see down there.
Taking a deep breath, she began to descend the stairs slowly, her nerves very taut, ready for the appearance of the horrible man in black. She gained the foot of the staircase without mishap.
Holding the lantern in front of her, she moved slowly and steadily toward the corridor leading to the storeroom where the stranger slept.
Suddenly she felt colder, and goose-bumps stood on her skin.
She could feel a presence around!
Neji had one corner to turn before entering the corridor, and suddenly she stopped in her tracks, afraid of what might happen, terrified of the unknown.
She took a deep breath and turned the corridor…and her lantern went out!
She gasped as the cold swirled around her, and the suffocating darkness clutched at her. Neji almost screamed as she reached out slowly and touched the cold walls.
She wanted to turn round and leave, but she couldn’t. The fear was too crippling, and she dreaded the thought of going all the way up in the darkness. She was breathing hard, and just as she opened her mouth to scream, she suddenly saw the golden light ahead.
It was all around the closed door, a rectangular glow of yellow light ahead of her!
That couldn’t be the lantern in the stranger’s room.
Breathing quickly, fighting her fear, Neji slowly walked toward the door!
When she was halfway to it she heard a low humming sound, and it was the same sound she had heard in her dream, the sound the man in black’s staff had made as it moved slowly over the boy’s body.
She began to tremble as she drew closer to the door, but the golden light inside the room still remained on, and didn’t go off this time.
She reached out and, taking the handle, pushed down slowly, and then she pushed the door inward, a scream locked in her throat, expecting to see that strange black-clad man she had seen in her dreams…
And yes, he was there!
The room was suffused by a bright light from the bulb-like thing attached to the rod the man was holding…and it was the same man, the one she had seen in her dreams!
He was a medium-built man, judging from the black robes he was wearing. The robe was bulbous, and it had a hood pulled over his head. His hands were black, as if he were wearing black gloves.
The young man was lying on his back now on the mattress.
In her dream he had been lying face down.
The strange man with the staff was using the brilliantly-lighted end of his staff to trace gentle movements on the face of the hunchback, moving with elaborate care from one eye to the other.
The head of the man in black was bent with concentration.
Neji was terrified as she stared at the disturbing spectacle. She wanted to turn round and flee, but she was rooted to the spot. She didn’t know what this strange, terrible thing was doing to the young man.
A scream was locked deep down in her throat as she looked on, and she took a step just into the room.
That was when the strange man in black paused suddenly, and then his head came up, and he stared in Neji’s direction.
At the sight of him Neji almost fainted!
She stared with horror!
There was no face inside the hood of the black robe…just inky blackness!
It appeared as if there was nothing inside there!
Neji wanted so much to scream, but her voice was closed over with terror, and no sound came out!
But her teeth chattered horribly, and her body shook so badly that the lantern she was still holding dropped from her hand.
She turned to flee. But when she gained the door she saw the strange black-clad man standing just inside the corridor, staring at her from that black hole.
How had he moved that quickly?
She thought there was another one, but when she turned her head she saw that the man wasn’t in the room!
Somehow, he had vanished and appeared in the corridor just to cut off her escape. He advanced slowly toward her, and she took faltering steps into the room.
The hunchback was still on his bed, absolutely still.
Neji wondered if he were dead.
Still she could not find her voice, and her heart thudded with real terror now, and she thought she was going to die.
The strange black thing followed her inside the room, and then the door shut slowly behind him. He stood still, his staff with the lighted end pointed at Neji, and then he slowly lowered the staff.
“Fear not, Maiden of Earth!” came the deep, slow voice from inside the hoodie. “I mean you no harm!”
