King Demi stood upright, pulling on Temidayo’s wrist.
“Get lost from here, you vile demon!” King Demi roared angrily at the red-eyed demon in the lake. “The likes of you have no place here! Begone!”
Temi heard a horrible screech, and then his legs were released instantly as the demon thrashed wildly and with great fear in the lake, and then it shot out high into the sky and was gone!
The lake was calm and beautiful again, and with squawks of delight the ducks and swans flew back down and settled on the serene lake.
Temi stood on the green grass, and as he looked at his father, tears fell down his cheeks as his emotions overcame him.
King Demi’s eyes became wet with tears.

Without a word Temi moved into the great arms of his father and felt those great wonderful arms folding up around him, keeping him safe and warm. Father and son held each other tightly, and both of them wept silently.
And, in the room in the valley of Aradise, Nneka Okez felt the young man’s shivering body settling, and a moment later she felt the warmth from him and knew that the icy coldness had left him.
Slowly, she slid off him and sat up in the bed.
She noticed the tears on the young man’s cheeks, although his eyes were still closed, and on his face was the most beautiful smile she had ever seen.
“My Papa!” the young, wounded prince whispered with his eyes closed.
“Who are you?” Nneka Okez asked softly. “And what is happening to you? What is the meaning of all this? What have I gotten myself into this time?”
And, deep in his meditation, Temi stepped back and looked at his father with love and adoration, but his young face was confused.
“Where are we, Papa?” he asked softly. “I always see this place when I go into meditation with Sage Agu. But this time it is different. This is the first time I’m seeing you. Am I dead, Papa?”
King Demi placed a hand on his son’s shoulder, and he smiled fondly.
“You’re not dead, my son,” he said gently. “In time, you will understand. You’re badly wounded, and you brought your mind here in a bid to heal yourself. Always I have tried to reach you, but alas, you were not wearing the chain that would bridge the gap between us, so I was always unable to.”
“Does it mean I’m just having a dream, of sorts?” Temi asked with some confusion.
“No, my dear son,” King Demi said with a sad smile. “We’re in a place called the Land of Bliss, which is a sort of middle lane between the land of the living, and the land of the dead. You see, I need to cross over, but I couldn’t. My job in Dayo wasn’t done, and so the Creator of All Things kept my spirit here until my work is completed. Until that happens, I cannot cross over, and I’ll remain here forever.”
“I don’t understand, my father,” Temidayo said, puzzled. “Your work is not done? Does it mean you will come back to Dayo and right the wrongs that were done to you and my mother, and my sister?”

“Oh, how I wish I could, but no, I can’t,” King Demi said, and a look of sheer pain and despair crossed his face. “You see, ever since I learned to walk, my father, who was the former King of Dayo, taught me how to be a man, and how to be a king!
He also taught my senior brother, Peter Igwe Pedro. That is the work of each king. They are supposed to teach their sons to become kings! Alas, I died before I could teach you! And that is where I failed as a king! So I have been waiting here to meet my son, and prepare him to be a man, to be a king, and redeem the Dayo Empire!”
“Then you don’t need me here!” Temi cried in anguish. “I am just not competent! I can’t even hold a sword! Papa, I can’t fight, and I can’t even master the art of self-healing! I’m not the Chosen One!”
“Yes, you are, Temidayo David Dayo,” King Demi said gently and placed an arm across the shoulders of the young man. “Listen, I was thirty-years-old when I became king. My father had taught me for well over twenty years to be a king! But you, my son, were hidden for eighteen years! You’re still just a baby! You don’t have to be so hard on yourself!”
“But you don’t understand, Papa!” Temi cried. “Oh, how I wish I can be a warrior, strong and fearless like you! Everybody speaks of how great you were as a King, my father! But alas, I can do nothing right except give women pleasure!”
“Ah, the sweet Royal Lance, as we call it!” King Demi said with a chuckle. “The Creator creates the rods of Dayo kings differently, and make the kings extremely handsome so that our Queens will find pleasure only in us, and never be lured by any living man, thus giving us the peace of mind we need to rule.”
“Yes, I know that,” Temi said, still anguished. “But it is not me you need. I’m not the Chosen One! The other son you fathered with your slave, the one called Daniel Godwin, who tried to kill me, he is the One! He’s the one you need here to train.”
“You’re the Chosen One, Temi, my son,” King Demi said with a sad smile.
“Why do you continue to say that, Papa?” Temi shouted. “Haven’t you heard what I just said?”
“I heard you clearly, son,” King Demi said. “But, I have only one son. And you’re my only son, my only heir.”
“Ha, I’m disappointed!” Temi said with pain. “What about Daniel? He doesn’t matter? He is less of a man in your opinion because he was born out of wedlock?”
King Demi laughed softly, and his eyes crinkled with pride as he drew his son into a warm embrace again.
“Ah, you make me proud, Temi,” he said gently. “You still fight for that brute of a man even though he tried to kill you? Indeed, you’re the son of a King. But, don’t let us waste time on that issue. Daniel Godwin is not my son. I was always true to your mother, and she alone bore my son.”
Temidayo gasped, and for several moments he could not speak.
He stepped out of his father’s embrace slowly and looked at the older man with incomprehension.
“Daniel Godwin is not your son?” he asked hoarsely.
“No, he’s not,” King Demi said gently. “He is the son of my older brother, Pedro Igwe Peter. You see, my brother was king then, and he made Daniel’s mother pregnant. Now, it was a great taboo for a King to make another woman pregnant, and he was supposed to be dethroned for that act.
However, my mother tried to save Pedro by begging me to accept the pregnancy so that my elder brother would not be disgraced. So I accepted the pregnancy to save my brother. Daniel’s mother was then driven out of the palace and given a lot of money to help her. So, in actual fact, Daniel Godwin is not your step-brother as you’ve been made to believe. He is just your step-cousin, and nothing more. He has no claim whatsoever to the throne of Dayo.”
