“My goodness!” Temi whispered tremulously as his knees shook. “That means…that means…”
“Yes, my son, it means Daniel Godwin has never even remotely been a candidate to be king of Dayo. You, my son, are the Chosen One,” the king said lovingly.
“But I am weak!” Temi cried, still confused. “Commander Prosper did his best, but I still detest violence! I cannot wield a sword! Everyone sees how weak and incompetent I am! I’ve not been able to master the art of swordsmanship!”
“You couldn’t master anything because you were being taught by ordinary men! Kings of Dayo cannot have ordinary men teaching them to fight,” King Demi said gently.
Temi scowled with incomprehension.
“Taught by ordinary men?” he asked softly, and his father nodded.
“Yes, my son,” he said softly. “The Kings of Dayo are special men, with special abilities. I told you my father taught me, yes, but I did not tell you how he taught me! You see, no ordinary man is supposed to be able to teach a king the skills of a warrior. That is why you couldn’t master any technique, my son. The Kings of Dayo are always the best warriors at any given time, and that is why they are taught by their fathers, who bring them to the spiritual land of Bliss to meet his teachers! Alas, I failed, when I was murdered! But you’re in Bliss now, by the kind heart of the Creator! And you’re going to meet your teachers!”
Temi stared at his father, and slowly a smile of pure delight crossed his face.
“So Walexman and Commander Freeman were all wasting their time trying to teach me to be a warrior?”
The king smiled broadly.
“Indeed, they were wasting their time,” he said gently.

“And you’re going to teach me to be a great fighter?” Temi asked excitedly.
“Yes, my son,” King Demi said gently. “But, if you’re lucky, you’ll have other imparters apart from me.”
Temi’s grin broadened and almost split his face into two.
“But we don’t have much time, Papa,” he said in a rush. “Only one month left to put our plan into action! Do you think I’ll be able to learn that fast and become that good?”
King Demi smiled and draped an arm around his son’s neck.
“You don’t need time and space, my son, to become a warrior!” he said gently. “The kings of Dayo are special, with special privileges, and you will need only one day to be imparted with the skills of a warrior! I’ll tell you a secret, my son. One day, you will bring your son here, my grandson, to be filled with these sets of skills. We don’t need to learn them. They are imparted to us, as you will soon see!”
Temi sighed deeply, and tears of happiness glistened on his eyelashes.
“You don’t know how happy that makes me, my father!” he said quaveringly. “I’ve felt so alone, so alienated, so useless! Worse, they told me the Seer said the Chosen One will have a mark in his right breast. Daniel Godwin does have a mark in his right breast. How do you explain that?”
“Daniel Godwin, whoever he is, has a mark on his right breast, son, but he does not have a mark in his right breast, and that is the mistake the Keepers made,” King Demi said. “They are two different things! What is on Daniel’s chest is simply a birthmark, but you have something unusual inside the right side of your breast, my son.”
“And what is that, Papa?” Temi asked wonderingly.
“We’re built different as kings, my son,” the King said gently. “The Creator made us differently. Our hearts, son, are located on the right side of our chests, and not on the left side, like ordinary people!”
“Oh, goodness me!” Temi shouted, elated. “Oh, is that really true?”
King Demi smiled.
“Yes, my son, it is,” he replied. “That is why Daniel Godwin stabbed you on the left side, thinking he stabbed through your heart, and thus making him think that he killed you.”
“But my heart is on the right, in my right breast!” Temi said, putting his left hand across his chest. “So he only wounded me! He couldn’t get to my heart!”
“Exactly, my son!”
Temi scowled.
“But, when Jhon Moziz was showing me the atrocities that happened in Dayo, I saw Temitayo Anubi stabbing you in the heart, on the left side of your chest!”
King Demi shook his head slowly.
“He thought he did, my boy, but no, he only wounded me,” he said with acute sadness. “Alas, he simply made me lose blood and speeded up my death because the deadly poison had already done its work. But alas, the sun goes down, and you need to return to your body! Tomorrow, I will meet you again and prepare you for the impartation!”
“No, Papa, no!” Temi cried in anguish as he put his arms around his father. “No, I don’t want to go, please! I want to remain here with you, my father! I love you, and I just want to be with you a bit longer!”
Tears came to King Demi’s eyes as he embraced Temi hard, and kissed him on both cheeks.
“Oh, how I wish I had time with you, my son, the one I love!” the king said quaveringly. “But alas, you cannot remain in the land of Bliss till sundown! If you do, you’ll be trapped here forever, and not be able to go back to the land of the living! So off you go, my son! I’ll meet you tomorrow!”

“No, no, no, Papa!” Temi screamed. “Just a little bit longer, please!”
But King Demi suddenly turned Temi toward a strange black door between two trees, and he pushed Temi hard through the doorway.
“No, no!” Temi screamed and opened his eyes, and then he found himself in very strange surroundings.
He was suffused with pain, and he grimaced as shafts of pure agony lanced through him.
He gasped and shut his eyes tightly as a bout of dizziness gripped his body, and he breathed shallowly as he slowly began to cope with the conditions around him.
Temi noticed that he was lying on a bed, his body swathed with bandages. The pain was concentrated on his thighs and in his chest.
Every breath he took amplified that pain to such heights that he tried not to breath too fast.
He could still see his father’s kind face, and feel the happiness that had been theirs in the land of Bliss. How he longed to return there, to be with his father and revel in the sweetness of that great love.
Finally, he opened his eyes again slowly.
He was on a strange bed, in a strange room, and sitting beside him on the bed was a dark-skinned girl so beautiful that he just stared at her for a long time. She was looking at him with a mixture of worry and apprehension on her beautiful face. Temi’s throat was dry, and he coughed slightly as he tried to speak.
“Who are you?” Temidayo asked weakly, his voice very soft and croaky, but she heard him.
“Nneka Okez,” she said in a calm, lovely voice.
“Oh!” Temi said weakly. “The widow in the valley. Indeed, I remember now. Thank you for everything you have done for me.”
She looked at his handsome face for a while, but she did not smile. If anything, her face became more inscrutable, and then she nodded once.
“You’re welcome, Prince,” she said in a rush.
Temi scowled a little.
“You know,” he whispered.
“I do,” she replied.
Temi smiled weakly at her, but she still did not smile back.
“Thirsty,” he whispered quaveringly.
“Oh, yes, of course,” she said in a rush. “Just a moment.”
She walked to a small table against the wall and poured water from a pot into a dish, and then she carried it back to the bed. She didn’t try to move him, but she picked up a spoon, scooped water, and gently brought it to his lips, gently pouring it in little drops into his mouth.
Her face was concentrated, and she barely felt him looking at her until she sat back when the dish was empty.
“Your skin,” Temi said softly. “It glows…as if you have some diamonds under your skin. I have never seen so much beauty moulded into a single person as I see in you, widow.”
She gasped and almost dropped the dish, but she caught it just in time and stood up quickly, and when she looked down at him her eyes were filled with anger.
