Nneka was worried for Temi.
It had been three days, and he had grown weaker by the minute. She had tried to give him water at short intervals to keep him hydrated, but the severity of his wounds, the loss of blood, and the absence of food were all combining to kill him slowly.
The wounds had not cauterized well because they had been too deep and too severe, and now they were turning gangrenous, a condition that would definitely poison whatever little blood he had left in him, and he would definitely die.
He barely opened his eyes or moved a limb. He lay in that semi-comatose state, sometimes making little sounds of happiness. Sometimes he laughed, and sometimes he spoke, softly and inaudibly.
Wherever he was, he seemed happy, and that, in a way, was a bit of consolation for Nneka. She knew that the prince would not survive the end of the week.
He might die, yes.
And she wondered why that thought suddenly filled her with dread and pain! Maybe, it was simply because he reminded her so much of her husband, her dear Moshood, who had died so fatally!
She sighed heavily as she rubbed his hand gently. His skin was cold and waxy. Small flakes had formed across the skin, and already his face was drawn and gaunt, as if he were already turning into a corpse. His lips were very dry, and veins stood out thickly on his neck.
For the umpteenth time, she put two fingers against his wrist and desperately felt for a pulse.
It was there, but weak, very weak.
And then he opened his eyes slowly and for several seconds he just stared at her, as if unaware of where he was.
“Temi,” Nneka whispered, and her voice was unsteady. “Are you going to be okay, Temi?”
His eyes were cold as he glared at her.
“Rose,” he whispered weakly. “Are you here to finish what you started, you vile witch?”

Weakly, he tried to tug his hand from hers, and she saw the cruel hatred sizzling in the depths of his eyes, and she was suddenly assailed by unreasonable distress due to the fact that he could barely recognize her.
“I’m not Rose!” she said desperately. “Open your eyes, Temi! Wake up, please!”
He stopped struggling, and a weak smile played around his parched lips.
“Ah, Nek,” he whispered, and then his eyes closed immediately, and his hand became limp.
Tears came to Nneka’s eyes as she desperately checked for his pulse again.

Temi walked along a very dark corridor toward a golden door.
The door was shimmering around the edges, as if from a secret source of energy. He was not afraid. It had been like this for many hours, and he was really happy!
He knew he was moving around the land of Bliss. He had passed through more doors than he could keep track of, doors of various sizes, shapes, and colours, and each of those doors opening to something new.
Temi simply couldn’t have enough of his father, and he wished dearly that he could spend the rest of his days here like this. He raced toward the golden door and reached out to open it, but like all doors, it swung outward by itself, and Temi almost raced outside when he saw the brightness, but he came to a complete stop in the doorway and stifled a scream of fear!
There was no ground beyond the door!
He could see the blue skies above, but below him was just a gaping empty void! His right leg was already stretched out of the door, but he moaned and stepped back quickly and held the doorposts!
Taking a step out of that door would send him plummeting down into the great abyss beyond!
There was just open space below him as if the golden door was just hanging in the air!
Afraid, he tried to turn back into the corridor, but it had blocked up, and there was no longer any way to turn back. He stood shivering in the doorway, holding on tightly so that he would not fall out, and then, in the sky, he saw something dark approaching him rapidly.
Temi focused his attention on it, unable to look down into the gaping yawn of space beneath him, and the apparition came closer and closer until he could clearly see that it was a little girl, not more than five years old, clothed in a black sheet and sitting on a black horse with two powerful wings.
The girl’s head was shaved bald, and her lips were very dark. Her eyes were very black, and she had many long fingers on each hand. The flying horse came to a halt and flapped its huge wings as if trying to maintain its balance.
“Fall out now, your destiny awaits you!” the girl said calmly.
“Are you insane?” Temi asked, very much scared. “If I fall I’ll die!”
“Fall!” the girl said sharply. “You have but a minute now to fall, otherwise you would remain here in that doorway for eternity! Fall out now!”
“I certainly won’t!” Temi shouted. “Who are you? What are you doing here? Is this some sort of trick, or a test? Where is my father?”
“Fall, Temidayo, heir of Dayo, fall!” the little girl screamed frantically, and in that instant, her voice sounded like a voice Temi had heard before.

Suddenly, the blue skies changed and became a raging red fire that seemed to be descending toward the door. Without thought, and with fear raging through him, Temidayo jumped into the sky and began to fall rapidly.
It was a horrible fall!
His body hurtled through the air, end over end, totally out of control!
He could feel the air buffeting him, tearing through his skin as he plummeted toward the great unknown below him, and he wondered briefly if this was going to be the end of him. He experienced a moment of terror, but then he forced himself to calm down and continued to fall.
At first, he was surrounded by hazy clouds and tepid steam, and then it cleared suddenly, and he found himself surrounded by huge falling boulders!
They were hurtling all around him, seeming to zone in on him as if to crush him, and once again his heart thudded with a sharp flash of fear but was gone quickly. He waited for the rocks to crush him, and then some hammered into him, hard and painfully, but he gritted his teeth and did not cry out!
He felt his bones being broken by the boulders smashing him relentlessly and saw blood pouring out of his body. The pain was excruciating, but suddenly Temidayo knew that he should not give in to his fear and pain, and he gritted his teeth strongly to withstand the torture as boulder after boulder slammed into him, and soon blood poured out of his mouth!
And then, suddenly, the boulders gave way to a sheet of blazing fire beneath him!
It was a raging inferno, licking hungrily below him, and he could hear screaming voices within the fire! Closer and closer he fell toward the fire, the screams of anguish becoming louder and louder, but he did not flinch, just watched it in a strangely detached manner until he fell into it!
It was a real fire!
Temidayo felt the horrible heat and experienced the terror of being burned alive! His body exploded into flames, and the screams around him became unbearable!
Temi experienced real horror, and for a moment he almost screamed for the pain to stop but he clamped his teeth together tightly as his body burned!
His skin was burning off so completely that he saw only his skeletal frame as he fell through the fire…he was just a complete skeleton now!
And then he fell from the fire into the most raging of seas!
This was a mad sea that roiled and roared with furious waves!
