EPISODE 6
LOCATION: KYLE TV STUDIO B
JAMES NORTEY is confused! What is the little girl talking about! And she calls him uncle?
He looks at the young girl and smile. Little STACY hugs him tighter than before.
OBENG ATOBRAH smiles to himself! He loves the beautiful sight of his granddaughter with the nephew he mistreated. Joy comes into his heart for he knows he will be forgiven.
Many years he has searched for JAMES. Many years his search has proved futile! But it is tonight or never!
JAMES NORTEY searches the little girl’s eyes trying to remember where he knows her. But He cannot!
Slowly the little girl points to where his grandpa is. The cameras move in slowly to the direction of the girl’s hand and OBENG ATOBRAH’S face comes on the screen.
Suddenly JAMES NORTEY shouts and the people are wondering if he knows this old man anywhere.
JAMES NORTEY
(Surprise, Angry)
You!!!
There is fury in his eyes! It could be that he is angered by the old man’s presence!
There are pains in his heart! Pains only he understands. Pains only he can feel!
OBENG ATOBRAH
(Calm)
Easy child! Easy! Oh, James I have wronged you so…

JAMES NORTEY
(Furious)
Cut it old man! Cut it! After all you and your family put me through you still have the balls to come here huh? Can’t you see? Have you not heard? I made it without your help. Take your apologies and get the hell out of here!!!
Indeed, he is angry! And the people can see it. They are surprised by his words and at the same time they are angry because here is the man who made life difficult for this young man!
The man who greedily took away the young man’s property at a tender age!
There is a murmur in the room! The people are angry! Others are raining insults on him! Others are throwing plastic bottles at him! The security personnel are putting in their best efforts to maintain peace!
But OBENG ATOBRAH does not care! He is not moved by the people’s attitude towards him. He knew this would happen and he has prepared for it!
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
Dear ones, let’s all exercise some patience! Let’s give this old man a chance to say what he has! Let’s consider his age and hear him out! PLEASE let’s hear him!
The room is quiet. The people are trying to calm their hearts but it ain’t that easy. They cannot understand why this old man chose this day of all days to disrupt them from the programme!
And when the room is silent, the little girl speaks!
STACY ADOMA
(Calmly)
Why are you insulting my grandpa? Does your Bibles not teach you to forgive? Why have you hardened your hearts people! Why do you keep this hatred in your hearts? Are you all not Christians? Are Christians not the very ones that say we should always forgive and love? If these people hate you grandpa, I alone love you. I love you so much grandpa! I love you!
They bow their heads in shame! The girl knows more than they know. STACY runs to her grandpa and hugs him!
OBENG ATOBRAH head is down. The love the little girl has shown him is bigger than he thought! He is so lucky to have such an adorable granddaughter.
JAMES NORTEY is speechless. His head is down and his body shakes! He is ashamed of the harsh words he used for his uncle.
He feels sorry for the old man and feels like apologising but his ego is not allowing him. After all he deserves it! Doesn’t he?
LAWRENCE AKUTEY looks at the sad face of his audience. Deep within he is mad at this old man. But he has to control his feelings!
The production team signals to him to take a commercial break! The people need some time off to be able to continue. He adjusts himself and looks into the camera!
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
Okay viewers and listeners, we’ll take a break and we are back we’ll…
OBENG ATOBRAH pauses him. He knows he is not allowed to do that but he has to do it. He needs the forgiveness of his nephew!
The cameras are now on him! For a minute he cannot move from the spot. He takes his granddaughter’s hand and boldly approaches JAMES NORTEY.
And when he is in front of JAMES, together with his granddaughter, they kneel before him!
STACY holds James’s legs with his tiny hands together with her grandpa!
OBENG ATOBRAH cannot speak. He allows the tears to flow! His heart is saddened. He has been a greedy and a foolish uncle.
The people look on with saddened hearts. They wish they could join this old man in his apologies.
This is the time! He has to seize his moment and now is the time!
OBENG ATOBRAH master courage. He looks into JAMES eyes and sees the pains he has foolishly cause him!
He closes his eyes and the tears flows. The tears are hot as coal!
He speaks!

OBENG ATOBRAH
(remorsefully)
Oh James! My son! My son! FORGIVE ME MY CHILD! I have been a foolish uncle. A greedy one at such! FORGIVE ME! I never meant to hurt you this way child. Forgive me so I die in peace! Give me a last chance to make the wrongs right! Let me be in your life again! Let me be the father you lost! Please, let me be the grandfather your children don’t have! Let me be your family, child! Oh Akwasi! I’m sorry son. I’m sorry son.
He pauses! He allows the words sink into JAMES head and the people around.
JAMES body shake. The pains are real. His heart is broken. The tears in his eyes makes him see nowhere.
JAMES holds the old man up and together they stand. He searches the man’s eyes and hugs him tightly.
They allow their tears to communicate! It’s been long he got someone to call family!
Family they say always come first. Isn’t it?
JAMES NORTEY
Oh Uncle! FORGIVE ME! FORGIVE ME! I’m so sorry! I couldn’t endure it uncle. I thought I wouldn’t be welcomed in the family. And I couldn’t endure it. I just couldn’t. I’m sorry I left without informing you. I was sad, broken hearted, confused and shuttered. I’m sorry!
The two men continue to hug. It’s a sad sight to watch. There are smiles on the people’s face. Others wipe their tears in happiness and joy! It’s amazing to see two family reconcile.
The two men withdraw from each other’s hug and face each other! And they laugh really hard. It’s been years James laughed out of happiness and joy.
All his life it has always been sorrows, sorrows, sorrows! For the first time VICTORIA NORTEY sees the happiness in his husband’s heart. The joy he carries in his heart is lovely!
LAWRENCE AKUTEY clears his throat and smiles.
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
Woah! Woah! Woow! Seems you guys are ignoring me here! Hahahahah!
There is laughter in the room! Yes! They’ve ignored him. Who wouldn’t do so?
LAWRENCE AKUTEY orders his production team and a chair is brought for OBENG ATOBRAH on the stage! It looks like the program ain’t ending anytime soon.
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
Isn’t it amazing how easily some people forgive? Just imagine folks, would you have done what James did? Indeed, he has shown us the teachings of Christ Jesus. Indeed, James had exhibited the qualities of a true Christian. You are our role model Jay! A hero to me and the young men out there! Well folks, it looks like we are not going to end this program today.
He smiles to himself because the response he is getting means the audience want to continue!
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
Okay! Ladies and Gentlemen, we will take a commercial break and when we come back, we will continue! Stay tuned!
He disappears from the screen and the adverts come on.
BACKSTAGE:
LAWRENCE AKUTEY approaches JAMES NORTEY and OBENG ATOBRAH at the corridors. The two men looks happy with whatever they are discussing! He clears his throat to alert them of his presence!
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
Please sir! With the messages we are receiving, the people would like to see you on the stage to answer some questions! Would that be okay for you?
OBENG ATOBRAH
I’m ready child! I will answer them all. All I want is the forgiveness of my nephew and for him to accept me as his family again. That’s my prayer child. My prayer!
JAMES NORTEY
Uncle, are you sure you can do it? You know, you shouldn’t stress yourself so much. We can settle this at home!
OBENG ATOBRAH
NO! NO! OH NO, SON! Allow me okay? If this is the last thing my soul needs then so be it. I’m forever ready!
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
Okay Sir. The adverts will be over in 5 minutes from now. So, I think you should prepare. Thank you.
He leaves the two men alone! And when he is out of sight James confronts him!
JAMES NORTEY
Uncle you know…

He pats his back and leaves.

 The people are seated! They want to know what happened next! It seems the old man has a lot to say!
In the front row is Victoria Nortey and her kids together with STACY ADOMA.
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
Welcome back Ladies and Gentlemen. We thank you all for your time and audience! The more we go the more the story becomes interesting! JAMES uncle is here with us! He has agreed to speak with us and share with us the little he knows!
He pauses and looks through the camera, smiles and turns to face OBENG ATOBRAH.
LAWRENCE AKUTEY
I don’t think there is a need for an introduction! The people already know who you are! And there is no need beating around the bush. According to JAMES he left home long before you came back. What was your reaction when you saw the note and realised he was long gone!
The cameras are now on OBENG ATOBRAH! He sighs and shakes his head
OBENG ATOBRAH
How will I be happy? Which of you here will be happy his nephew or niece or whatsoever leaves him because of a property he or she does not know. Tell me! That day…
FLASHBACK: OBENG ATOBRAH’S NARRATION
THE OBENG’SRESIDENCE.
ATOBRAH’S car drives in. It’s a nice black Benz. He enters the gates and announces his arrival.
OBENG ATOBRAH
Hunny I’m home!! Anyone there! Hello! Rita darling! James!
He wonders where they are! He hears footsteps descending the stairs and he knows it’s his wife!
She is RITA OBENG. She is a nice and a beautiful woman.
RITA OBENG
Welcome home husband!
She takes his files and kisses him!
RITA OBENG
How was your day love! I hope you didn’t fall into the trap of any woman out there.
OBENG ATOBRAH
Oh love! Oh, please stop it. Where is James! He was not outside, neither is he here.
His wife bows her head and sighs. She takes the note from the centre table and hands it to him.
Curiously he opens it and read as fast as he can!
OBENG ATOBRAH
Oh no! Dear Lord! No! What did I do? What did I do? No James please!
His body shakes! Tears form in his eyes!
RITA OBENG
Does this not call for celebration? If finally he has left should we not celebrate? Stop shaking like a child and be like a man!
He gets irritated by his wife and shouts at her!
OBENG ATOBRAH
(Furious)
Cut it woman! Cut the crap! I never meant to hurt the boy. What woman did I marry! I was foolishly blinded by your desires for wealth. Are you happy now? Go on! Enjoy! Does that make you a mother? Oh no!
He takes his car keys and rushes to the door! Suddenly, he stops and turns back to face his wife.
OBENG ATOBRAH
I’m going out there Afia! I’m going to search for my nephew! If I come back without him; know that you are to be blamed. Know the story you have to tell to my family and the boy’s. Pray for a miracle Afia. Pray!
He gets out and slams the door!
Where does he start? Where should he search?
His heart is heavy and his tears are hot as he drives to his family house!
