EPISODE 12
Fad Tremblay was terrified!
He seemed to be wilting in his seat as he looked at the cold face of the handsome giant sitting opposite him. He could not place this entity! In all his years of fighting evil as an Unblind he had never come across one that could read minds, or was so confident as this one was exhibiting.
And how on earth had this man known about the relic?
“Relics, actually, preacher man,” Duke Swallows said gently, once again exhibiting that frightening ability to read the mind of the old Unblind. “The Holy Relics, three objects that combined, in the wrong hands, would become the most powerful weapon any entity could possess. One of them is a little branch with a thorn which was part of the crown of thorns the Roman soldiers forced on the head of Jesus Christ which pierced the skin around His temples.”
Fad Tremblay gasped with new terror as he gaped at this entity.
“Who are you?” he whispered with great shock.
“I can see your shock because I mentioned the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Duke said calmly. “Of course, no evil entity is supposed to mention the name made sacred above all names and remain standing. I understand your terror, preacher man, and I’ll explain it to you in a second.
The other relic is the iron at the tip of the arrow that was used to strike the ribs of your Lord Jesus by the Roman soldiers. And the last relic is a piece of the robe Jesus wore on the day He was crucified, the robe that the Roman soldiers cast lots for. Three very powerful relics from Jesus on his last day on earth as a human being.”
Fad Tremblay was shivering now.
This was a horror he could not fathom out!
The Holy Relics had existed from time immemorial. There had been time when they had been used by men of God for good because of their divine nature. Used for prayer and meditation, they had been known to help with healing to the point of even resurrecting the dead who came into contact with them.
Such awesome and absolute power could not really be handled by men, and eventually it turned even the staunchest man of God into a beast because their sense of power corrupted their souls and made them proud and haughty. Men of God in ancient times had become evil eventually from the powers they had garnered from using the relics.
But then, inevitably, the relics had fallen into the hands of a demon-possessed powerful man, and it had turned him into a monster of epic proportions! Known as The Roar, this beast had hounded men of God who had fallen relentlessly and decimated their numbers to grand proportions.
It had taken a group of forty experienced Unblinds to confront this beast. It had taken twelve days and the lives of twenty men of God to finally exorcise the frenetic and wicked demons from The Roar and finally get the relics back.
That had been almost a thousand years ago.
The decision had been taken to separate the Holy Relics and never let their powers combine again. Three of the most powerful Unblinds had been chosen as Keepers, and the relics had finally been separated.
And the tradition had continued.
A dying Keeper chose his successor and handed over the relic to him.
Over the years, the trace had been lost for two of the relics: the piece of cloth from Jesus’ robe, and the iron head of the spear that had pierced Jesus’ side.
But the piece of the crown of thorns had been passed down until Fad Tremblay became the Keeper.
“I know you’re the Keeper of the Thorn, preacher man,” Duke Swallows said calmly as he leaned back and crossed his massive arms across his chest. “I want it.”
Fad shook his head numbly.
“The relic is useless without the other two,” he said in a very dry voice. “Even if you get it, it will remain just a piece of indestructible thorn on a branch, but you can’t do anything about it! We lost track of the other two about five hundred years ago, and there’s no way you can get it!”
“I think now should be the most appropriate time to tell you who I really am,” Duke Swallows said gently. “I’m sure you’re familiar with the verse in Genesis chapter six verse four, hm? An age where the divine sons of God saw how beautiful the women of the earth were, so they came down to earth, fashioned human bodies for themselves and slept with the women of the earth!
A classic example of how the lust of the flesh even led angels astray. Of course, I know doubts are being thrown on that story, yes, with many now saying this can’t be true and that it referred to men and not angels. But you and I know angels came down and lusted after women, and their offspring grew out to become wicked giants that terrorized the earth. Are you with me?”
Fad licked his dry lips and nodded painfully.
“Good,” Duke Swallows said. “Well, the Great Flood in Noah’s time caused these fallen angels to shirk their human bodies and return to heaven, but of course they were denied entry and banished forever to serve with our master Lucifer, the first rebel. But, not all of them returned to heaven, no!
One of them shirked his human body but remained hovering, because he was indeed an angel, and he waited out the flood, and later found himself more women when the population of the earth increased. That particular Fallen Angel remained on earth until the day Jesus died, and the curtain in the temple of the Lord that separated the Holy Sanctum from the rest of the church was ripped into two!
At that particular moment, everything evil and sinful ceased to exist because the Lord Jesus Christ had taken it all. So, that Angel was booted right off the earth to serve as part of the evil hosts of Lucifer’s army!”
And finally, the horror hit Fad Tremblay as the depths of the truth dawned on him.
“But that Angel…he had survivors because…he made the women pregnant, didn’t he?” Fad asked, chilled to his very core.
“Indeed, you’re perceptive, preacher man,” Duke Swallows replied. “Yes, one woman was pregnant for that rebel angel, and she gave birth after the death of Jesus Christ to my first ancestor who lived to be three hundred years old. My father lived two hundred years, and now me. I am going to live forever with the aid of the Holy Relics, preacher man.
So, you see, I’m not exactly human. I’m partly the offspring of an angel, albeit a fallen one. That is why my mark is different, and that is why sinful and fallen Unblinds like you are no match for me! And now, you have two minutes to hand over that relic or you will die in your sins, in the most painful of ways!”
Fad Tremblay stared at this evil incarnate with terror.
“My God!” he whispered tremulously. “You have the other two relics, don’t you?”
“I do,” Duke Tremblay replied coldly. “My grandfather took over the spearhead. He wanted all three to live forever and mess up you damn Unblinds. But eventually, he was killed by Unblinds, but not before he handed over the relic to my father, who also found the piece of the robe. He handed over both to me before Unblinds did him in, and so yes, we’ve been in possession of the two relics for a long time now, almost five hundred years. And now, you will give me the last relic.”
Fad Tremblay jumped to his feet suddenly and violently.
The thought of the Holy Relics in the hands of a spawn like Duke Swallows filled him with sheer horror. This could not be allowed to happen, no! It would mean a new age of horror and deaths to many men of God! It would mean no Unblind would be able to face down this entity and take him down! Duke Swallows would have unparallel power and could live forever, and reign in terror over the whole of the earth if he wanted to!
And no Unblind would be safe again because they would be powerless against this monster!
“You will not have it!” Fad Tremblay screamed with horror. “I may be a sinner, but right now, faced with the wickedness in your soul, I do repent wholeheartedly…forgive me, Father, for I have sinned against you with the lust of the world!”
Duke Swallows suddenly became a pale, misty and transparent entity as he blasted into Fad Tremblay!
Fad could feel the entity inside his body, moving viciously into his head, painfully ransacking his memories, delving closer to the relic.
“Get out of me, demon!” Fad Tremblay screamed in anguish. “You do not have power over me because the Lord of Hosts, the Great I am that I am, He has forgiven my sins and set me free! I cast you out in the name of Jesus Christ!”
Duke Swallows crashed out of Fad’s body and slowly hovered in spiritual form in the chair!
Slowly, he began to take on a solid shape once more, beginning from the head, and Fad saw that the man’s evil numeral, 666, was no longer white but was burning furiously as if fire had been set to it.
And so were his eyes!
They were roiling and violent burning flames now.
“Well-played, preacher man!” he said in a voice that was no longer calm and sweet, but was like a wall of echo in Fad’s ears. “You worked out your salvation…but unfortunately, you can’t survive this moment of death!”
He held out his hands and Fad noticed to his horror that Duke’s fingers were no longer human, but they were huge and hairy like the paws of a beast, and the nails were long and sharp like talons.
“And I got into your memories, and know where the relic is, you piece of shit!” he continued. “And guess who put the prostitute on you, preacher man? I did! She is an agent of mine, and I used her to prime you for this very moment, preacher man!”
“You piece of evil!” Fad Tremblay whispered with horror at what he had heard, at how easily he had fallen in grace and perhaps allowed the most incarnate evil back into the world. “You will be banished!”
“Not by you, preacher man, or by any other Unblind now that I have the Holy Relics!” Duke Swallows hissed, and when he opened his mouth his huge tongue darted out, slit like that of a snake’s, and there seemed to be fire burning way down in his gullet as black smoke emitted from his ears and nostrils. “I see your grace returning, but it will only lead you to death in a good place, because indeed your sins were forgiven, but the magnitude of the sins has led you to death!”
Duke Swallows made a pinching gesture with his claw-like hands!
Fad Tremblay screamed with horrible pain as he felt his head being squashed inwards as if by an invisible vice!
He struggled feebly as his face began to cave inward slowly but firmly as the pressure mounted on each side of his head. He raised feeble hands to his head as the pain and pressure became unbearable and his head caved in slowly!
Fad moaned in agony when he heard his own skull bones crushing and breaking!
“Lord, forgive my transgressions and please let my soul be acceptable to you!” the man of God whispered in agony.
Both of his eyes popped out at the same time followed by tendrils of nerves, and then his skull crushed absolutely and fragments of pulpy brain tissues seeped out of his skull and ears!
Duke Swallows let his hands drop, and immediately the body of Fad Tremblay hit the floor hard!
Duke made a sweeping gesture with his hand, and the great bookshelf on his left moved off the wall violently and crashed to the floor. A second later, Duke was facing a glass-faced console set into the wall. His hand broke the glass surface, and then he put in the pass-codes he had stolen from Fad’s memory.
There was a low pinging sound, and a rectangular space appeared in the wall, exposing the thorn relic resting in an exquisite glass case inside. Duke Swallows grabbed the relic and as he began to disappear from the room he saw that Fad Tremblay was no longer twitching.
Duke Swallows sailed fast into the skies when he saw that Fad was dead now, and his body was glowing brilliantly…and the glorious presence of heavenly angels could be seen in the room.
“Well-played, preacher man!” Duke Swallows whispered as he disappeared and hovered deep into the night skies. “Well-played!”
He blasted across the sky and whirled over and over, evident that he was rather pleased with himself.
“We got the last one, Timmy!” he said in a elated voice. “We’re gonna be immortals, my son!”
He stopped in the air and waved his hand, and immediately a circular cloudy substance opened up in front of him.
“Come, Timmy, my dear son!” he whispered fondly. “Let me see your face and let me tell you the news! We will live forever, and those accursed Unblinds will flee from us!”
Slowly, the cloudy surface cleared and he saw the dead body of his son lying on a slab in the mortuary of a hospital.
“Show me my son!” Duke shouted, and a close-up image of Tim Swallows filled the space.
“Timmy?” Duke said, and his voice shook with unbearable pain. “Who did this? Show me who did this!”
He swabbed at the surface in front of him, and the images flitted across the space in reverse order until it stopped in the cemetery where there was sunlight, and then he saw Yaw Boat standing over Tim Swallows with the Death Clouds behind him.
Duke saw the terror on his son’s face, and saw how he was pathetically begging the man standing over him for mercy! Trembling with great pain, Duke turned his eyes on the Unblind.
“The Legion Slayer?” Duke whispered with great confusion. “Is that him? Show me!”
And as Duke watched Yaw Boat setting the Death Clouds on his son, he let out a most horrific wail that made thunder clash and lightning shoot out in many crescendos…and the ground below him cracked open in the form of a horrible earth tremor!
Yaw Boat’s face filled the space now and the Duke roared into that face:
“You will know pain!”
