EPISODE 23
The horrifying incidents in her room would have driven Nicole into a frenzy of fear and sheer helplessness, but hearing Boat’s voice and knowing she could see him that day had suddenly overshadowed everything else.
To her, it had not been just a year.
It had been a lifetime of pain, horror, depression and even death. Her soul had died within her as she waited without word from him, and there had been times she had wished she would just die.
She could not believe that he was around, knew where she was and yet had not deemed it fit to even say one word to her! There was no way she chould have stayed without speaking to him if she knew where he was, and as the days turned to weeks and the months crawled by, she had slowly tried to tell herself that maybe, just maybe, he did not love her as much as she loved him.
It would have been easy to accept that assessment and juxtapose it with the fact that maybe being a year older than him also played a part, and then moving on.
But she could not.
She knew just what she felt for him, and she knew what they had shared had not been a fluke or just a passage of wind. It had been there, tangible and strong, powerful and undefeatable.
And so, through it all, she had waited, and prayed, and wished for him to show up somewhere, somehow! She had been blind to all men and simply found the strength to live a day at a time, to crave an hour at a time, to miss him every little second of every day and just waited in that limbo of excruciating pain.
That her heart would love this hard, this completely, this passionately and in an all-consuming way meant one thing: it was ordained, and nothing would shake her out of that belief.
And now, when everything seemed so helpless and hopeless, when she had felt like going stark raving mad, here he was again, just a few hours away.
And Nicole was terrified!
She was scared of the fact that something will happen, even now, to send him away again, to separate them again, and her terror lay in the fact that if that should happen, then indeed she would lose her mind for real because she could never find the strength again to go through life if he were to vanish again.
And so, she called David Yeboah soon after speaking to Boat to tell him that she wanted to take the day off. He had listened to her calmly and then told her she could not take the day off. Nicole almost became hysterical as she told him bluntly that it was not up for discussion because she had accumulated leave days and planned to take off two months now.
“I’m not against you taking a day off, Nicole,” David had said kindly. “Truth is, I think you’re overworking yourself, and I want you to take your leave days and relax. But today we’re pitching our computer system package to the Minister of Information, remember? You’re the core person doing the pitching, and everybody is looking up to you. You’ve forgotten, haven’t you?”
And Nicole sank back down on the bed, deflated.
“Oh, yes, I forgot,” she said listlessly. “Oh, Dave, I’m sorry. Alright, I’ll be in to handle it.”
“Good girl,” he said with a chuckle. “And when you’re done, you can take the rest of the day off and as many leave days as you require.”
“Thanks, Dave,” she said in a deflated voice.
“But it is not like you to forget details like these,” he said softly, and gave a shaky laugh. “You’ve found him, haven’t you?”
Nicole put shaky fingers to her lips.
“He’s on his way to me, Dave,” she whispered, and for no reason at all her voice broke, and she began to cry softly. “I’m sorry, Dave. Will see you later, okay?”
She cut the call and fell back on the bed weeping uncontrollably.
Tears of joy, tears of sadness, tears that cleansed her body of the pent-up poison it had accumulated over the year when she had lost him. She wept for a long time, shedding out the bitterness and the rancid rancour. And, when no more tears came, she finally stood up and went to take a shower.
She did not use the bedroom bathroom though; she went to use the guest room shower.
But, before then, she tried to reach Yaw Boat again but her father told her he was not around them. She informed him to tell Boat she would be waiting for his call.

And when the meeting ended that day after Nicole’s pitching, the Minister for Information was so impressed that he wanted to sign over the contract right away if he had been able to. As it were, he fixed a date for them to come over to the Ministry and sign the contract after he had put in place all the bureaucratic requirements.
Nicole’s bosses were absolutely blown away once again by her expertise and output. There was a little celebration afterwards, some champagne popped and made rounds. She kept glancing at the time and at her phone, getting desperate by the second.
Boat should have called by now!
Dear Lord, what was happening?
She excused herself and went to freshen up her makeup and took the chance to call her father, but it did not go through. Getting a bit desperate now, she went back to the executive offices to write her request for a one month off.
It was immediately approved though her boss. The Chief Executive Officer of Dash Systems, Tim Ofori-Manu, told her she would be heading the team to sign the contract. Once again, they congratulated her heartily and announced a bonus amount for her and her team.
She then left the CEO’s office and hurried to her office to give her secretary final directives.
Nicole then took her bag and left the office.
How she wished she had taken Boat’s number!
She was getting quite desperate now, and she knew she would not be able to survive if Boat did not show up.
She entered the elevator and found Dave already in there. He smiled at her, trying hard to keep his pain at bay. He had been watching her the whole day, and he had been amazed at the tension and anxiety consuming her. Nicole was one of the best composed persons he knew with nerves of steel that never cracked no matter how great the pressure.
But now she was ripping apart at the seams, and it amazed Dave that just one man, one person, could make this lady he loved so much feel this myriad of passionate expressions. It proved to him just how much she did love that mystery man.
“Oh, Dave,” Nicole said with a tight smile. “Please, forgive me! I should have come to say goodbye before leaving.”
He smiled charmingly at her.
“I understand, Nicole,” he said gently. “I wish, above all else, that one day someone will love me as much as you love this ungrateful bastard!”
She smiled charmingly then and nodded.
“You will, Dave,” she said sweetly. “Because you’re such a sweet, wonderful guy.”
They descended to the ground-level and passed through the main reception which had a door that led to the executive car park. As usual there were a lot of visitors in the huge lounge waiting to be served.
Nicole walked beside David as they headed toward the door, but then one of the receptionists called her name.
“Miss Anderson, please,” she said urgently, and Nicole turned with her eyebrows arched impatiently.
“Tried calling you on your phone, ma’am,” the receptionist said. “You were in a meeting and I left a message with your secretary. You have a visitor, please.”
And the receptionist pointed to a spot behind Nicole, toward the deeper shadows of the lounge, and David turned to follow her pointing finger. Nicole, however, froze for a moment with her eyes shut and for almost a full minute she stopped breathing.
David found himself looking at the most handsome young man he had ever seen. He was standing calmly at the extreme end of the lounge and his eyes were fixed on Nicole. He looked far younger than David had expected, but there was something about him, something that was both intimidating and appealing at the same time, something that made him seem so mature even at that very young age, and on his face was a deep passion that reflected the expression he had seen on Nicole’s face from the morning.
“He’s here, Nicole,” David said with a little smile, and then he quickly crossed to the door, opened it, and went out. He did not want to see what would happen. He knew, without a shadow of any doubt, that what those two had was too strong and too precious to be threatened.
Nicole turned slowly, and then she opened her eyes, and tears filled her eyes immediately.
The receptionist took one look at her, and then she looked across at the handsome young man at the far end, and she sighed with understanding when Nicole’s bag fell from her hand and fell on the floor.
The receptionist picked it up, but Nicole was already walking slowly toward Boat. The lounge was silent now as everybody stared at her, at them.
And when she finally faced him, she saw the tears of anguish in Yaw Boat’s eyes as he slowly dropped his gaze and stared at the floor.
“Why won’t you look at me?” Nicole murmured in a broken voice as her tears fell down harder. “Why won’t you look at me, Yaw?”
“I see your pain, Nic,” he murmured, and his voice was broken and tortured. “I feel the pain I gave you. I’m so sorry, Nic. So terribly sorry. I didn’t know I was hurting you this much.”
“Nothing matters,” she whispered simply, and his head came up slowly and he stared at her with incomprehension.
“What?” he whispered fiercely, his expression broken. “You must hate me, Nic. You must be feeling angry, bitter, wanting to hit me even.”
And she smiled even though she was crying, and on her beautiful face was the most radiant look of love.
“Nothing matters, Yaw,” she said again. “This moment, you right here, that is what matters. And that is all I need.”
“You forgive me?” Yaw Boat asked in a tragic voice as he lifted his hands and put them on each side of her face and gently wiped her tears. “You forgive me for the pain I caused you?”
“You felt it too, Yaw, the pain,” she whispered. “In the end, it has built us, forged our love in fire, and made it stronger, and that is why you’re here.”
“Oh, Nic!” he whispered as his thumb caressed her cheek. “I love you. I more than love you.”
“You better,” she whispered, and then they moved at the same time as his arms went around her shoulders and her arms went around his body, and their embrace was as powerful as life.
