EPISODE 25
Cars were slowing down and a few people were beginning to gather.
“I think we better get away from here,” Nicole said, but her eyes remained on Boat and deep fear lurked in the depths of her eyes. “I’ll call the transport manager from my office. He’ll send a towing truck over for the car.”
Ledi helped them to their feet as Nicole quickly went to the car to take out her bag and other personal items. She then called the manager and requested for the towing truck.
The three of them sat in Ledi’s car to wait for the arrival of the truck.
Ledi sat in the front passenger seat whilst Nicole and Boat sat in the back with her arms around Boat.
“What’s going on, my love?” she asked softly as she tried to stem her horror. “Why is this happening to you? What is this Nineveh Effect?”
Boat looked at her with very hurt eyes.
“I don’t know why this should happen,” he said softly. “Your father and some senior Unblinds came to see me. Apparently, Elaine gave birth to a son, my son…”
Boat then went on to tell them all that had happened so far, and as he spoke Nicole became more and more horrified. When he was done, he felt drained and strangely empty. She tightened her arms around him and put her cheek against his.
“I now understand,” Nicole whispered softly. “Just like in the days of Jonah, the recalcitrant prophet, when God sent him to prophesy repentance to the people of Nineveh, and he fled because he wanted the city to be destroyed. There was a turbulence on the sea that nearly capsized the boat he was fleeing in, and he told the sailors to cast him out of the boat.”
“Yeah, exactly,” Ledi said thoughtfully. “The good God caused a huge fish to swallow the guy, and he stayed in the belly of the fish for three days, after which he prayed and was vomited out on dry land, went back to Nineveh, prophesied, the city repented, and that was about it.”
“So, because I wanted a moment of peace, because I am scared to confront this thing and possibly kill the poor baby, I have to lose my gifts and be subjected to such evil?” Boat spoke, and his voice was absolutely bitter. “For almost two years I’ve not known peace! I’ve lived in a maelstrom of the most horrific and dangerous circumstances on a daily basis! My life has been a frenetic and fractious experience of unimaginable horror, and yet because of one instance where I said I wanted to pass, I should be threatened with death, together with Nicole?”
“Yaw, stop it!” Nicole cried in reproach, and tears came to her eyes. “What’s wrong with you? That’s one thing you should never do!”
“What, huh?” Boat asked bitterly. “He is God, and He is my Father above, right? I have no right to ask questions? Is that what you’re saying?”
“What the hell are you talking about, buddy?” Ledi asked softly. “Damn it, Yaw, you saved me, remember? When I lost my wife and kids, I blamed God, yeah, and I just wanted to die! I couldn’t understand why He would send me to protect others and save them from the jaws of death, and yet allowed my kids to die! But it took grace to let me see that God was sparing my kids a bitter future, and that He was preparing a better existence for me!”
“But you still kept your gift!” Boat said bitterly. “You still had the ability to see and combat evil! All I needed was a modicum of peace! Why then has my gift been taken away? Why then have Nicole and I lost our force-fields?”
“You haven’t lost the force-field, buddy,” Ledi said softly.
“Stop shitting me!” Boat said fiercely. “Why did Elaine mess us up if we had force-fields?”
Ledi turned and stared coldly at his friend.
“Because at the point she struck, both of you were in a moment of sin!” he said softly.
“Sin?” Boat asked. “Because I kissed a girl I loved?”
“You should know better, Yaw!” Ledi almost shouted. “You two were not just kissing! At that particular moment in time you were into a deep emotional substance! You two were thinking and experiencing sexual bliss! Admit it, dammit! You were virtually gone!”
“Yes,” Nicole whispered tightly. “Yes, I was acutely aroused, and I wanted him to make love to me at that precise moment!”
“Thank you!” Ledi said, a bit calmer. “And at that particular moment in time, just as our Lord Jesus said, the two of you had already committed fornication, and the face of God was turned away from your sin at that particular moment, and so that bitch had free reign over you!”
Nicole nodded and took Boat’s hand as her eyes bored into Ledi.
“What should he do now?” she asked softly. “I love Yaw, and I hate to see him in such pain.”
“We do nothing!” Boat said in a tired voice. “We do nothing.”
“Boat!” Ledi whispered with horror. “Be careful, bro! Right now, you’re treading on very dangerous grounds!”
“Leave me the fuck alone!” Yaw Boat exploded and moved away from Nicole, and then he opened the car door and got out.
“Yaw, oh no, my love!” Nicole cried and quickly got out too, took his arm and pushed him hard against the car. “I love you, Yaw, and I understand your pain, and your horror! Yes, I know you want peace, and I know you deserve peace…but not like this, my love, not like this! No man wins in a fight with God!”
“I’m not in a fight with God!” Boat cried bitterly. “I just don’t understand any of this anymore!”
“Fuck you, Boat!” Ledi cried in alarm, his eyes scared. “What don’t you understand, huh? Take it from a man who lived on the edge of death after my fall from grace, that is somewhere you don’t even want to be!”
And Boat pointed a finger at Ledi.
“God is my Father!” he said painfully. “I wronged him, and because of that Nicole almost lost her life? I almost lost my life?”
“Because you have been ungrateful, buddy!” Ledi hissed furiously. “Damn it, Yaw! You were on the brink of death! Evil was preparing you for the most heinous future, and God saved you, dragged you from the mire, washed you, and made you the best amongst His Chosen! And you have been nothing but ungrateful ever since!”
“Ungrateful?” Boat whispered bitterly. “Me?”
“Yes, you, you, you!” Ledi exploded. “You’ve been living your life all these months as if you’re doing God a favour! Damn it, boy, it doesn’t work that way! God did you a favour, bro, and it is not the other way around! I’m just an Unblind, Nicole’s father is just an Unblind! There are Seers, there are prophets, healers, groups of gifts…but God gave you everything, Boat! Your gifts were limitless! You could heal, you were a Seer, you could even command the fucking sun to come out, and it bloody came out at night…yes, I had a dream about that too! No one does that, man, no freaking man does that! And you know what it means?”
Yaw Boat took a deep breath and covered his face with his hands. He was trembling now, and he looked so lost, so weak, so scared and so pathetic that tears of anguish came to Nicole’s eyes immediately as she looked at him. She moved against him and wrapped her arms around him as Boat looked at Ledi with bitter and pained eyes.
Ledi sighed greatly and reached out to squeeze his friend’s arm.
“God loves you, Boat,” he said softly. “He granted you powers none of us has ever seen. He held nothing away from you. But you saw it all as a burden, as a problem. Damn it, you’re a soldier, boy. A soldier for God, and soldiers fight, and save, and stick to the front end of the action. It is not all lost, you know. Even now, God chastised you, but He chastises those He truly loves. You seek Him, let Him know you’re sorry. And get back in line, buddy.”
“I’m grateful He saved me,” Boat said with a groan. “But I’m done as an Unblind, man.”
“Yaw, no, please, don’t say that!” Nicole whispered against his chest. “Do not bring the wrath of God on you too, I beg you, my love!”
Boat put his arms around her and but his chin on top of her head.
“My love, God has taken the gift from me,” he said softly.
“You bastard!” Ledi Pedi whispered with horror. “You haven’t listened to any word I’ve said. Really? You still want to wallow in your self-pity?”
“Shut the fuck up, Ledped!” Boat exploded furiously and fixed Ledi with furious eyes. “Yes, He has taken away my powers as an Unblind! But I know that I’m still a Christian, right? If I stay outta sin, I’ll have my force-field, right, and be protected from evil? Good. I’m not gonna kiss Nicole again, or lust after her. In a month I’m going to get married to her, and then lust after her as my wife, and that will be no sin, right? Right? So, yes, cool. I’m no Unblind, that’s cool. I’ll marry and live my life in peace as a Christian. That’s okay by me.”
“Yaw!” Nicole whispered in agony. “You’re going too far, my love, please, I beg of you.”
“Towing truck’s here,” Boat said and moved away from her. “I’m gonna help them.”
Nicole turned on Ledi Pedi and grabbed his arm.
“I beg of you, Mr. Pedi, I beg of you, please, help him!” she whispered frantically. “He’s…he’s hurt, and bitter, and angry. Like a petulant child, a little child who’s angry at his parent! He doesn’t know what he’s doing! Please, please, help him! I’m going to fast and pray for him…but, please, help him!”
Ledi sighed and looked after Boat’s retreating back with fear, and then he looked into Nicole’s scared face.
“I don’t know what’s going on, Miss,” he said softly.
“Call me Nicole,” she broke in, and he nodded.
“Yeah, Nicole, my dear, I know one thing for sure, nothing can separate us from the love of God,” he continued softly. “I know God loves that guy, yes, I know that. Right now, nobody can help that boy, nobody. It is between him and God now, dear. I’ll be there for him, guide and guard him to the best of my God-given abilities, but ultimately, it is between him and God. I just hope Yaw Boat doesn’t stay in the belly of his fish for eternity.”
“He’s in the belly of a fish?” Nicole asked with horror.
“Oh, yes, definitely, he has slipped into his own Jonah Curse, his own version of the Nineveh Effect, as we Unblinds know,” Ledi said grimly. “There is no doubt about that. Right now, Yaw Boat has been swallowed completely. Whether he will be vomited out stronger and more powerful with a matured and focused understanding of his call, or whether he will die inside his own big fish, is entirely up to him!”
