EPISODE 37
When Yaw Boat turned away from his son, he saw that Duke Swallows was facing him with a smug look on his face and a crafty smile playing around his spectral lips.
“Touché, Unblind, you handled that rather remarkably,” he said softly with the same smugness on his face. “I underestimated you again, much to my detriment, I must say. I’m elucidated now about your abilities and how you were able to overcome the Legion. Well done, Yaw Boat. You’re great!”
Boat scowled slightly as he felt a sudden pang of unease.
For a horrible moment it seemed the advantage had been wrestled from him and this feeling was made worse when he saw the upper clouds beginning to crackle with less intensity.
“I’m not great, Dukie,” Boat said softly. “You can’t disarm me with flattery and a bloated ego. Whatever I’ve done, is by the power of the Lord. I’m but a mere mortal with no power. My strength comes from above.”
The smugness faded a bit and Duke’s hatred blazed fiercely in his eyes and on his forehead. He snarled and floated toward Boat with a show of defiance.
“You lose, Unblind!” he hissed fiercely. “There are two factors at play here that limit any perceived powers you might have over me! Wanna hear?”
Boat sighed deeply as more Death Clouds fell through the sizzling entryway and went directly into the blazing inferno beneath him! It was an incessant movement, and he began to get depressed and acutely stressed by the second!
The most unerring aspect of it all were the wails and screams that tore into his ears from the depths of Hades. This was a most terrible place to be, and it made his heart faint with a terror that got progressively worse.
“There’s nothing you can tell me,” he said softly.
“I’ll tell you anyway!” Duke said viciously. “First, you cannot punish a fallen angel! Your powers as an Unblind does not give you the prerogative to lay a hand on the soul of a fallen angel! That is the sole prerogative of your master! So, whatever you do, you have no power to harm me!”
Boat hesitated, and immediately he felt a searing pain in his head as Duke Swallows flew at him with a snarl and fastened his spectral hands into his throat! Duke’s eyes blazed like diamonds as he growled and forced Boat downwards!
With a moan of terror Boat realized the cloudy covering under his feet had parted, and his feet and calves were now inside Hades, and he could feel the searing heat! But that was not all…he felt hideous hands fastening on his calves and pulling him relentlessly down!
“FEEL THE TERROR OF HADES, EARTHLING!” Duke roared into his face.
For a brief second the terror was deep in Boat’s heart but then he saw his son hanging helplessly in the air above his head and he knew that if Duke vanquished him it would mean death to that baby, death to Nicole, and death to a horde of Unblinds!
Yaw Boat forced a calm he did not feel into his inner self, and then he spoke quietly.
“You’re not a fallen angel, Dukie!”
“BEHOLD THE WINGS BEATING ON MY BACK!” the demon roared. “I AM NOT A PARTAKER OF YE FLESHLY SYMBOLS! THOUT HATH NO DOMINION OVER ME!”
And now he forced Boat’s thighs into the Hades!
“You’re just a descendant of a fallen angel!” Boat said with forced calmness. “The son of a sinful woman and a sinful half-breed! You’re not a fallen angel, and I do not believe you’re a fallen angel! You’re a demon, and as a servant of the Most High God, my abilities surpass any you can control over me! Begone, in Jesus’ name!”
Yaw Boat soared out of Hades and slashed his hands at Duke Swallows!
A ball of pure crackling energy spiked into Duke Swallows and he tottered backwards with a wail of sheer terror!
Yaw Boat glanced down and saw that even though he was not in his body, his soul legs were not glowing but were very dark and appeared to be smoking in a sinister way!
And it dawned on him with the force of a million terrors that Hades was not meant for him! The closest he could come to this infernal place was this sort of a buffer zone he was currently suspended in, a cocoon of two clouds, one covering the land of the living, and the other covering Hades. If he sank any lower, he would die and never return!
“IT DAWNETH ON THEE, DOESN’T IT?” Duke Swallows bellowed with sheer hatred as he glared at Boat and floated gently towards him. “THOU SHALT PERISHETH IN THE BELLY OF HADES, UNBLIND!”
Boat tried to keep the terror away but it was creeping up fast on him and he knew Duke Swallows was aware of it. This was the part of being an Unblind that had made him get so fed-up with it all. This level of being on top-notch form spiritually, physically and mentally was a drain on his very essence.
The stakes were always high, his life always on edge, the negotiations tight and refined to the sharpest edge.
This was a level of existence where even the most miniscule miscalculation could result in an eternity of suffering or a horrible death! And here, right here, was as high as the stakes could ever be raised! The danger was palpable with the scariest extreme of extinction.
The feel of the horrors of Hades beneath him had made a great dent in his armour and Boat fought hard to establish that mental superiority he had managed to achieve over Duke Swallows. The moment this demon felt he had a foothold he would quickly dominate and kill him. There was that smugness in the demon’s eyes and it was beginning to unnerve Boat.
If anything, Duke Swallows should have stayed away but he was gliding slowly towards Boat now with eyes that blazed with hatred and the great urge to give Boat maximum pain.
“I vanquished seasoned Unblinds a hundred times better than you, motherfucker!” Duke Swallows said nastily as he resumed his trash-talk, evident that he had a card up his sleeve. “I made them kneel and beg for life! And today, in the belly of Hades, you’re going to kneel to me and beg for mercy!”
“That ain’t gonna happen, demon,” Boat said softly.
“Fear, Boat, raw fear!” Duke hissed coldly. “I can feel it in your voice! You’re confused and uncertain! You’re going to know real pain and the true meaning of vengeance, my boy! Oh, yes, you’re going to!”
“You cannot inflict even a pinprick of pain on me, demon!” Boat said furiously and raised his right hand. “This is over! Into Hades will you descend!”
“Not likely!” Duke Swallows said fiercely and raised his hand suddenly, and Boat saw it holding three objects in their physical form!
The Holy Relics!
Boat felt great trepidation suddenly!
This was what the Duke had been keeping, his trump card, the ace under his sleeve, bidding his time and waiting for the opportune moment to spring it!
Boat’s confidence was further shaken up when he glanced down and saw that horrible demonic faces were pressed against the cloud-like surface he was standing on! These were the most hideous demons he had ever seen, and their mouths were wide open in anticipation!
Their horrible hands and claw-like appendages scratched the cloud-like substance in a vain attempt to rip him apart as the fire blazed around them and the agonized screams of lost souls drove him crazy!
He fought it, but his fear was palpable, and he knew that Duke Swallows had sensed it, and he smiled with hatred blazing out of his eyes.
“Triple Unblinds I vanquished over the relics of a superior son of the mighty one!” Duke said softly. “Today, at this hour, with powers inherent in these relics, I do push this mortal soul before me into the fiery depths of Hades!”
Slowly the Duke held the relics towards Yaw Boat and immediately a black ray of light emanated from the piece of cloth! A red light emanated from the piece of thorn and a white light from the head of the spear! The lights merged at a point just in front of Boat and exploded out into a fierce blast of bright light that threw him back and down!
This time Boat sank down to his stomach into Hades!
The demons beyond roared with fury and came for his soul!
The pain was nothing like Boat had ever experienced!
Pain of the flesh was excruciating, but pain to the soul, in Hades, was magnified a million times! He now understood why the lost souls were wailing so constantly! The blazing heat was as searing as it was hot, suffusing him in agony he could not stand! The demons swarmed around him, biting and tearing and pulling, and for a split-second Boat nearly fell through!
“THEE SHALT KNOWETH THE WRATH OF THE DUKE!” Duke Swallows screamed as he moved forward with the Holy Relics still pointed, the unbearable light still tearing into Boat!
Yaw Boat was a lost soul!
The sheer pain was enough to mess up any coherent thought formations in his brain. All he wanted was the pain to stop, and that was the only thing he could focus on! He wished for death, he wished to pass out and he just wanted to give up!
His shoulders were still above the cloud-like substance, though, and his hands were spread wide, just about holding him up from the horrible torment below. And then, just as he thought he could not take it anymore, just as he almost relaxed his arms to be sucked through into Hades, the spawn began to cry pitifully!
His son!
A lost baby filled with terror and confusion, maybe hungry, maybe in deep pain!
And there was no pain more horrible than a parent whose child was suffering…and perhaps that was what saved Yaw Boat!
The pain of his son superseded the agony he was feeling, and above the torture his eyes finally looked into the blast of the Holy Relics. He stopped himself from screaming and he bravely let the intensity of that light shine into his eyes.
“I do not believe the power of the Holy Relics!” Yaw Boat whispered fiercely, and immediately the harsh light flickered.
“NAY!” Duke Swallows bellowed. “The Holy Relics are of a master’s blood and apparel! Saintly and sanctified, pure and powerful! The woman who bled for decades did touch the hem of this apparel, and her healing did she receive!”
“I do not believe the power of the Holy Relics!” Yaw Boat screamed this time. “It is just a piece of iron, a piece of cloth and a piece of thorn, and surely! It has no power whatsoever over me! No! I do refuse it as my Lord is the Lord of Hosts!”
The bright splash of light from the relics still blasted around Yaw Boat, but this time around it just felt like a ray from an ordinary torchlight! With a grunt Yaw Boat looked down at the demons tearing relentlessly into his soul.”
“Do you think you can partake of a feast of a soul cleansed by the blood of my Lord Jesus Christ?” he screamed fiercely. “Be torn up in the name of Christ if I be a servant of God!”
His glow was a horrible and fiercer diamond-like profusion of sparkles that tore through the demons around him and cut them to millions of tendrils, and then Yaw Boat floated slowly out of Hades and landed once more on the cloud-like surface.
He looked at the Duke, and his expression was not human.
“NAY, NAY, NAY!” the Duke said in a futile attempt at bravado, still willing to fight on, but already the unease was beginning way down in his eyes. “THOU SHALT NOT USURP THE HOLY POWER OF THE HOLY RELICS!”
“Just a piece of cloth, Dukie!” Boat whispered. “Just a piece of thorn, and just a piece of iron. Nothing extraordinary!”
“You belittle the power of your Lord?” Duke asked in a scandalized voice. “You do not believe the story that a bleeding woman touched the hem of your Lord’s dress and got healing?”
“Actually, I believe that, Dukie!” Boat said softly. “Yes, I believe the Holy Relics, the real ones, could be powerful!”
“THESE BE THE REAL ONES!” Duke Swallows screamed. “They knocked you down into Hades!”
“Nope!” Boat said with a nasty smile. “They didn’t. I slipped!”
“BLASPHEMER! SINNER! WHOREMONGER!” Duke Swallows screamed shrilly. “THOU RESPECTETH NOT THE HOLY ADORNMENTS OF THY MASTER!”
“Told you I respect the Holy Relics,” Boat said softly as he moved towards Duke Swallows. “What I don’t believe is that what you’re holding are the real ones. They’re fake!”
“THEY BE REAL RELICS!” Duke screamed. “VERILY, VERILY, I DOETH LIFTETH THEM OFF UNBLINDS I VANQUISHED!”
With those words the brightness of the relics began to hurt Yaw Boat again but he steeled himself and did not show any sign of pain.
“Prove them to me, Dukie!” Boat shouted now. “Show me that they are real and not just fake items! Prove it! Until you prove it, I still do not believe they are real!”
And immediately the bright light stopped hurting Yaw Boat!
Duke Swallows looked at Boat with desperation now.
“TRUTH BE TRUTH!” he whispered. “THE MASTER DOES NOT NEED TO PROVE THE EFFICACY OF HIS BLOOD TO A MERE MORTAL! THESE BE HOLY RELICS!”
This time the blast from the relics knocked Yaw Boat backwards again, and he felt his feet beginning to sink into Hades again.
Duke Swallows screamed with glee and pushed the relics forward!
“If these are the Holy Relics, and indeed the Lord is Holy!” Boat said with hard, cruel eyes. “How come the evil soul comes near them without being singed?”
And immediately the power of the relics stopped hurting Boat, and he stepped forward with sheer madness in his eyes.
“What?” Duke Swallows whispered dully.
“I be an Unblind!” Boat whispered as he came forward. “I do serve a Holy God, and a Holy Son of God! The Holy Spirit does abide in me! They hate sin! Darkness has no friend in light! Can evil and good mingle and co-exist?”
Boat was a relentless cauldron of fury as he stepped forward towards the Duke.
“Stop, I command you, stop!” Duke Swallows shouted, but his voice was cracking, and it was filled with mounting horror. “Who are you that twists the truths of the Master into figments of vexations?”
“I am a servant of the Most High God!” Boat said savagely. “You, demon, are an epitome of darkness, a corrupter of the rightful ways of the Lord! A deceiver, a partaker of the spoils of the whore of Babylon! On the strength of Isaiah the fifth chapter and the twentieth verse do I condemn you, demon! Woe unto you for calling evil good and good evil! Woe unto you for putting darkness for light and light for darkness! And for putting bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter, woe unto you!”
Duke Swallows floated back desperately.
“No, stop it, stop it!” he said frantically. “I have the Holy Relics, worn by the Master in the form of the apparel, with the real powerful stains of his blood on the…”
“They are fake!” Boat screamed shrilly, cutting into Duke’s tirade. “Because the goodness of the purity of the Lord can never mix with the darkness and evil soul of Lucifer! If, indeed, what you hold are the Holy Relics, let me see proof of them cutting you down with their inherent power this very minute!”
And the beam of horrible blast from the Holy Relics swung full blast into Duke Swallows!
He screamed with sheer pain and horror as he was sent crashing hard and down backwards! The lower body of his spectral form disappeared into Hades as he stared at Boat with horror!
The three Holy Relics were now hanging in the air in front of Yaw Boat who reached out slowly and plucked them from the air.
“What the fuck!” Boat screamed with glee as he broke into a huge smile and stared down at Duke Swallows. “Shit stakes, Dukie! These Holy Relics are indeed the real ones! Didn’t your mother ever teach you not to play with fire?”
And, in that most horrible of places, in the craziness of acute wailing beneath him and the constant falling of dead and evil souls into Hades all around him, Yaw Boat began to laugh with real mirth!
His son stopped crying when he heard his father’s laugh, and a moment later the baby began to giggle too!
“Come outta the hole, Dukie!” Boat said softly. “I ain’t done with you yet, motherfucker! You’re not going to Hades!”
“Unblind!” Duke Swallows whispered with eyes that were quite frantic now. “You cannot touch me! I am a fallen angel!”
“Stop that shit, Dukie!” Boat said nastily. “You’re no angel so stop deluding yourself. You’re just a confused half-caste punk! A fucking demon terrorist, that’s all. Get out of there now in the name of Jesus Christ!”
And Duke Swallows sailed out of the Hades and crashed on the cloud-like substance in front of Yaw Boat.
Boat smiled.
It was not a very nice smile.
