EPISODE 21
Mrs Nortey: Gosh it is my husband, don’t make a sound.
Hon. Nii Nortey: Rebecca where the hell are you? Why haven’t you gone for the kids in school?
Mrs Nortey: Since when did getting the kids from school become my responsibility? Isn’t it the work of the driver in the house?
Hon. Nii Nortey: So if it is the work of the driver and he hasn’t done that, as a responsible mother what do you have to do? Sometimes you make me regret marrying you because I don’t see the value you bring in this marriage.
Mrs Nortey: Don’t go there Mr man, you always want to find the slightest opportunity and rub my face in the mud but I swear I won’t give you the chance to do so. If you want someone to channel your anger to, your subordinates are there for you to channel your anger on so please don’t try me, you won’t have it easy this time around.
Hon. Nii Nortey: You if I say one, say two. I will come and meet you in the house this evening. Nonsense. (cuts the line)
Mrs Nortey: Why did I answer the call in the first place? This foolish man always has a very nice way of destroying my happiness.
Youngman: Is every thing alright my dear?
Mrs Nortey: Not really my real African bulldozer, the driver who is supposed to get my kids from school hasn’t done so and I believe someone called my husband to inform him of that and he called to channel his anger on me.
Youngman: So sorry about that, come for me to erase the anger that has been triggered in you with some kisses and romance.
Mrs Nortey: Am sorry but my libido has gone down with the call that came in, let me rush and get my kids in their school, we will continue this wonderful time together again. I will call you in the evening so we reschedule our appointment again but please and please, whatever happened here or going on between us should remain between us because if anyone gets to know of this, my husband’s political career is over, my marriage we crush, you will also not enjoy any more benefits from me and even maybe, your life might be taken away from you. If you call once and I don’t answer, don’t bother to call back again, I will return the call in my convenient time. (starts dressing up)
Youngman: Awwww I am already missing you even though you haven’t stepped out and please who is your husband?
Mrs Nortey: See you, a short while ago you were here showing signs of remorsefulness and now you are all over me. I told you not to worry and anyone who tastes my honey pot will keep coming back for me. Tell me if I am not better than your woman in bed?
Youngman: Truth be told you are as sweet as a mango and in bed you don’t look your age because I was only experiencing the strength of a 20years girl in bed with me. I hope I will be seeing you soon?
Mrs Nortey: Of course my handsome warrior, go and prepare yourself because we have an unfinished business. You can rest a while before you leave and to set the records straight, my husband is Hon. Nii Nortey the Minister for Transport, Roads and Highways. (plants a kiss on Kelvin’s lips and steps out)
Youngman: (takes the 20cedis bundle and smiles to himself) Just this little sex and I am two thousand cedis rich? This is my 2months salary with extra classes benefits. The one I call my girlfriend even gives me a timetable as to when I can touch her and even after that, she demands for money in return like I employed the service of a prostitute. How many people on earth gets to enjoy this opportunity I just got, getting paid for something I equally enjoyed is a big plus and I am now enjoying from the same bowl the minister eats from. Charlie I am now a big boy in the society but I must be very careful with the way I do my things.
Back at the Hospital Cafeteria:
Matron: Oh Kwame that is a very sad story you just narrated to me. I am so sorry for all the things you went through but I have a strong believe that everything will be fine again.
Twum Boafo: My dear, that “everything will be fine” is a slogan we use in giving ourselves false hopes. The reality of the matter is that you can’t eat your cake and have it back, the harm has already been done and there is nothing anyone or myself can do again. I am even grateful to God that I wasn’t sentenced into prison because those who set me up led me directly into the trap that had been set for me and because I trusted them, I didn’t see the looming danger coming my way.
Matron: Once again I am sorry but hey you are not eating your food, hello please get us a chilled fruit juice or Kwame you prefer a chilled beer?
Twum Boafo: Adwoa the fruit juice is okay. Eeeiii I forgot I came here with my son and friend.
Matron: Oh don’t worry about them, they have been served with what they want and they are sitting in the corner over there.
Twum Boafo: (turns and sees his son waving at him) Ah Adwoa how do I thank you enough? You have taken my problems away from me this afternoon.
Matron: Hey don’t even go there, do you think what you did for me in the past can be compared to anything that I am doing now? I want to say something but promise me you won’t scream or freak out when I say it and please don’t say no to it.
Twum Boafo: I promise not to scream or freak out.
Matron: Okay, I want you to give me the chance to foot the bill of your wife after she has been treated and discharged. Please don’t say no to my humble offer.
Twum Boafo: I will accept your offer on one condition.
Matron: What condition could that be? I hope it won’t be something above me?
Twum Boafo: I want you to tell me about yourself since I am not seeing any wedding ring on your finger. I hope I am not biting too much than I can chew?
Matron: Not at all my dear, I lost my husband about 10years ago in a tragic accident back in the States when he was returning from the stadium after going to watch a final match between my our son’s school and another school. Fortunately for me on that faithful day, I wasn’t feeling so well so I and the kids decided to stay back so he was the only one who left to watch the match. He called me minutes after the game was over that our son scored a hatrick and won the man of the match, man of the tournament and goal king so because of that, the school is taking him on a treat. Base on that he left alone and on his way, a speed train derailed and fell on his car. He died at the spot.
Twum Boafo: Oh so sorry about that, I am sorry I have brought back bitter memories to you.
Matron: Oh don’t worry about that, I have moved on and I have given several lectures on his death so it is a normal thing to me now. I only relocated to Ghana to help people with the things I learnt in the medical school. The compensation the family was given was used to build a medical facility in the States which is being handled by my son whom we all thought will be a footballer.
Twum Boafo: Oh that is a good initiative but honestly if I were to be you, I wouldn’t bother coming back to this ungrateful country.
Matron: No matter what happens, the leopard can’t change the spots on him even if he wants to be the jaguar.
Twum Boafo: That is very true my dear, you have shown how patriotic you are to the building of this country.
Nurse: (rushes in) Matron! Matron! Please, Matron! The woman who was brought in a while ago is fighting us and has taken off the drip we put on her, she is very aggressive.
Matron: Go to the doctor’s quarters and get me Dr. Buabeng, tell him it is any emergency so he should please come with you. Kwame join me as we move to where your wife is.
Twum Boafo: I hope all is well Adwoa?
Matron: I don’t think it is any big problem, we always see this kind of problem everyday. It is more like an occupational hazard, that is why nurses are not allowed to put on watches, necklaces or anything on their neck when they are on duty.
Back at the City:
TV 1 Studio:
Roselyn: Good afternoon to you our cherished viewers, today I promised to bring into our studios some movers and shakers of our country’s politics. Indeed I have here with me some powerful personalities I will introduce after a short commercial break but I must tell you this place is so charged, my name is Roselyn Serwaa Oppong and you are watching TV 1 Political Talk Show. Don’t go anywhere, I will be right back.
Production Manager: (after a short break) One, two, three and action.
Roselyn: Welcome back my dear viewers, before we went on break I was telling you
I have some big personalities in the studios. Representing the government in power is a woman I have much respect and admiration for, she in the person of Honourable Amma Bawuah, the member of parliament for the Asante Akyim constituency. On my left is another big wig from the leading opposition party and he is in the person of Honourable Odoi Sakyes. Lady and gentleman I welcome you to our studio.
Hon. Amma Bawuah: Thanks very much for having me here in your wonderful and powerful studio. I want to also thank the good people of my constituency for their confidence they have in me always.
Roselyn: Hon. Odoi, I believe you are having something also to say?
Hon. Odoi: Oh thank you my dear, actually there is a lot I have to say looking at how bad things are going in our country. See the way the cedi is depreciating and look at how this government led by Reedolf Mensah is mismanaging the economy.
Hon. Amma Bawuah: (cuts in) Roselyn please kindly regulate this show well by correcting my honourable colleague as to the adjectives he should use on this platform. He can’t be addressing our president with his name like they are on the same scale. Even though our president is very young, he is the right person that the good people of this country voted for him to lead us. If his party managed the economy of this country well enough, I don’t believe his party will be voted out and if he has forgotten so soon, my party took the lead with over 4million votes so he should be selective with his words.
Hon. Odoi: Roselyn, for peace to reign, I apologise for not addressing the first gentleman of the land well.
Roselyn: Thank you for not dragging matters any far and apologising. In the news today, we heard one of the kidnappers who kidnapped some girls in the Western Region has been arrested and brought to the police headquarters for further interrogation and investigations. Also we heard the cedi has been a bit stable in the world market for some days now. Yesterday we also heard that charges at the port has been cut down by 50%. Again we know our president is at the African Union Summit where he will be honoured for his role he has taken to fight corruption and stabilise the economy of the country within his short period in office. What are your take on these headlines, I will start with you Hon. Odoi.
Hon. Odoi: Thank you for the opportunity Roselyn, in the Akan adage there is a saying that “we do the needful before we do the one that is nice looking”. Roselyn, the economy is in shambles and businesses are collapsing and you issue state of emergency just for 3 girls who are missing? Which serious government does that? Does Mr president know the amount of money Ghana is going to lose with that step he took?
Our cedi is depreciating by the day and instead of putting together a formidable economic management team to tackle the problem, he goes about issuing state of emergency for some missing girls, who knows if even they have gone to hide in their boyfriends houses and we are here worrying about them.
Roselyn: (cuts in) Hon. Odoi, if you have been following our reportage very well, you will see that, the girls have indeed been kidnapped and with the little information we have gathered, the kidnappers are not even Ghanaians. Don’t you think the president did the good thing by striking the state of emergency clause?
Hon. Odoi: My dear the president has lost focus, the power that has been given to him has made him drunk that is why he goes about giving some unnecessary orders. The youths are not getting jobs to do after university, salaries of nurses, teachers and doctors are not forth coming and instead for him to channel his attention there, he goes about releasing state of emergency and arresting people from the other political party.
Roselyn: Hon. Amma Bawuah, I saw you jotting some points down and your facial expression tells me you have a lot to say. Please you have the floor.
Hon. Amma Bawuah: Thank you very much Roselyn, to start with, I want to register my greatest displeasure and disappointment in the statement my honourable colleague made. Honestly he should bow his head in shame as a father and a grandfather that he is, if anyone will give a lose talk like this, I wasn’t expecting him to be the one to say those uncultured and unfiltered words like that.
He is a learned and well travelled person so I know he knows a lot of things, we were here when the American government released a state of emergency in some of it’s states just because two kids had contracted the swine flu disease. That same government declared a state of emergency when a journalist went missing in Iraq and a whole troop was sent to Iraq just to go and get that one person, by so doing the troop lost 4 servicemen but were happy they got the missing journalist home, let me ask, are those girls not important like those American citizens?
Hon. Odoi is sitting here talking about the cedi and how it is depreciating, my dear ask him the amount of things or goods he imports into this country. Common toothpick this man here imports it from China and he expects the economy to be stable and resilient. Talking about job creation, he should tell everyone watching this programme how he employs the ladies in his company. I have it on record that Hon. Odoi sleeps with the young ladies before he gives them job.
Hon. Odoi: (cuts in) I take exception to the statement you just made Amma Bawuah, you can’t come and sit on national television and say things you don’t have evidence to because I will take you on in the court of law for defamation of character. I have worked so hard for name I have made for myself so I won’t give you the chance to propagate this falsehood about me.
Roselyn: Hon. Amma Bawuah, please kindly retract your statement because I don’t want Hon. Odoi or my cherished viewers to say I am not moderating this show well or I am being biase on today’s programme.
Hon. Amma Bawuah: For the respect I have for this television station and show, I will retract my statement but that doesn’t mean what I said wasn’t true. I am ever ready to defend myself at anytime or anywhere I am called upon.
Hon. Odoi: (cuts in) I don’t think I can sit here and listen to this rubbish from a woman who has no respect for men. To hell with her apology and soon she will hear from my legal team as to the reason why she had to come and sit on a television station and defame me. (walks out from the studio)
Roselyn: Well viewers only God can tell the heat in the studio at this time. Hon. Odoi I want to apologise on behalf of your colleague and plead with you not to drag this issue to court. I know all this things are part of the game so please accept our humble plea and forgive. Before we draw the curtains to an end of today’s show I would like to say a very big thank you to my sponsors, Angie’s Klassic Bakes and Cooks, One 4 All Electrical Works, Owusu Ventures and Ablade Dromo Closet for my beautiful and elegant dress.
Hon. Amma Bawuah: (cuts in) Roselyn please kindly permit me to say something small. Please this is a humble appeal to our drivers, as most of you will be driving to Kwahu for the Easter celebrations, I will entreat you all to drive safe, don’t drink and drive, don’t drive when tired, don’t over-speed unnecessarily, overtake when you can clearly see the other lane is safe, check your tyres and brakes to see if they are in proper conditions before you move your car, strap your seatbelt, communicate with your mirrors and respect the road signs on the road. To all my constituents I thank you for your support and I pray for our hard-working president to return safe into our motherland after receiving a high medal and an ambassadorial position at the just ended African Union Summit. Thank you.
Roselyn: Thank you too for coming honourable. Well our dear drivers, you heard some very helpful tips from our honourable mother as far as the Easter holidays are concerned. Every life is very important so let’s do well to protect it. Thank you for watching and see you next week. We will give you exclusive coverage this evening at 6pm when the President’s plane touches down.
Back the Hospital:
Dr. Buabeng: Mmmm Mr Twum Boafo, after running series of test on your wife, the lab report shows that she has developed typhoid fever. The sickness has been in her for long which was developing into high fever, that was why she was a bit aggressive when the drip was put on her hand but not to worry, the injections and medicine that we have administered on her will flush everything out of her system. Take this prescription form and get these extra medicines from the pharmacy, the nurses will know what to do when your bring the medicine.
Twum Boafo: Thank you very much doctor for your timely intervention. I will get the medicine right away.
Matron: Thank you very much doc, I know it was your off day but had no option than to call on you when I was informed of her aggressive actions.
Dr. Buabeng: Matron don’t mention, you know our job has no off day. I will be back in the evening to check up on her and see if her condition has been stabilized. Mr Twum Boafo, everything will be fine so don’t worry.
Later on in the evening the presidential plane touches down at the airport tarmac and taxies straight to the presidential lobby area where the President and his entourage steps out of the plane to receive a heroic welcome from his wife, the vice president, speaker of parliament, some ministers of state, some members of parliament, some senior officers of the security services, some party executives and some die-hard fans of the president.
He is then ushered into the presidential lobby to engage the media in a little conversation as to how his first trip the African Union Summit went but along the line, a question is thrown to him which will change the mood of everyone present.
If you want to know what question that was thrown to the President then stay glued to your phone and don’t forget to drop your comments as always.
