CORRUPTION
EPISODE 22
Madam Eunice Ashong: Good evening to you ladies and gentlemen, I want to thank every media personnel here for your time and patients. The moment we have all been waiting for is in and without much I do, I will hand over to my second boss so he takes it up from there, I call upon the second gentleman of the land, His Excellency the Vice President James Bugri.
Vice Prez. J. Bugri: Your Excellency you are welcome back to your mother land. Indeed every Ghanaian is proud of you and your achievements both at the local and international scene. Your relentless efforts to put Ghana on the foreign map has been seen hence the prestigious award that was conferred on you by the leaders of the African Union Summit. I stand here this evening very proud and happy to be your second in command and welcome you back to your country. (everyone applauds)
President R. Mensah: Haaaa home sweet home, thank you very much Mr vice president for the resounding welcome given to me. Whatever I have been able to accomplish so far, it wouldn’t have been a success without everyone of you here. I was conferred with the Order of Volta at the just ended African Union Summit for my fight against corruption and humanity towards my fellow man.
I am happy to annouce to everyone here that I have also been appointed as the chairman for the Peace Council for the African Union and the ambassador for the Africa Fight Against Corruption Council. Honestly it wouldn’t have been a success without you and I want to say thank you to Ghanaians, my ministers, party executives and my beautiful wife for their support and prayers so far. Thank you to everyone once again.
Madam Eunice Ashong: I believe you can do better with the applauds you just gave. Our president is the very first Ghanaian to be conferred with this prestigious medal at that stage so you should all know the importance of the award. Now I will give the media personnels here the chance to ask the President one or two questions before he departs from here.
Most of you know the distance and hours our president spent on the plane so please when you get to the microphone kindly makes your question very simple and brief so that the question can be addressed. His Excellency will take two questions first, he answers them then another two set of questions then it follows that way. Please you introudce yourself before your question. I can see many hands but I will start with the lady in the blue dress after that then the youngman in the strip shirt will ask his question.
1st Media Personnel: Good evening and thank you very much for this opportunity ma’am. My name is Naa Shika from Sky tv, Mr president, I want to congratulate you for medal you received from the just ended African Union Summit. Please as you said you have been given an ambassadorial position what are the roles that has been assigned for you to follow? Thank you.
2nd Media Personnel: Good evening sir and congratulations on your success at the African front. My name is Cosmos Antwi from Parrot Multimedia, your Excellency, please how are you going to combine your busy schedule with this new role you have been assigned with?
President R. Mensah: Thanks for the set of questions, the first person’s question she asked was, what roles am I to play in my assigned duty. As a peace ambassador, my work is to go to African countries where there are issues of misunderstanding and conflicts. I and my team will do our best to resolve all outstanding elections disputes, tribal wars, political conflicts and anything that doesn’t speak well of Africa.
I and my team will have to settle all this things I stated even before U.N. decides to step in. The second question was how I was going to combine my duties as a president and peace ambassador together, well since the ambassadorial position is not a full time job like my presidency, it won’t be a problem at all. All bores down to proper planning and I want to assure Ghanaians that my new position won’t affect my presidential duties in this wonderful country.
Madam Eunice Ashong: We will do the last set of questions because our president is tired and we have to allow him go to his residence after the long journey back home. Youngman in the black shirt and the one standing next to the fair lady.
3rd Media Personnel: Good evening sir and thank you for the opportunity given to me. My name is Isaac Manford and I am representing Kasapreko tv. Your Excellency, please what was the criteria the union used in appointing you as the ambassador for the peace council?
4th Media Personnel: Good evening and welcome back to your motherland sir. My name is Kofi Dumor and I represent TV 1 and Radio 1. Your Excellency, my question is not related to your success at the just ended African Union Summit but rather on the statement the Inspector General of Police made this afternoon.
Your Excellency with your order, a team was setup which led to the apprehension of the suspect who was behind the kidnapping of the three young girls in the Western Region but this afternoon he told us that the suspect is not cooperating with them and neither is he going to use force in getting information from him.
President R. Mensah: Unfortunately I don’t have an idea as to how the leaders appointed me Mr Manford and to answer your question Mr Dumor, I am yet to be briefed on the kidnapping issue so I will reserve me comments for now until I am well informed.
Mad Eunice Ashong: Thank you very much for coming members of the press. His Excellency will take his leave now since he very tired. Any new development will be communicated to you in due course. Have a blissful evening and please drive safely when going back to your various destinations.
As the president sits in his car back to the presidency, he registers his displeasure and sermons the Interior Minister, his deputy and the IGP to his office.
President R. Mensah: Joe drive me straight to my office, there is some rectification that I need.
First Lady: My love, you just came back from a very long trip which I know you are very tired now, why don’t we go home so that you tackle whatever problem it is tomorrow when you get to the office. I instructed the cook to dish out your welcome meal 5minutes ago and the girls are also waiting to see you. You know for about 3weeks now they haven’t really seen you.
Mildred celebrated her seventh birthday in your absence and she lamented bitterly about your absence, you promised to do a video call with her but later you sent me a message that something came up so you can’t speak with her. Today she bought something for you when coming back from school and she is waiting to deliver it to you before she sleeps.
President R. Mensah: My dear I wish I could hid to what you said and I feel for my beautiful daughters too. You know I swore and oath to preserve and defend the constitution and citizens of this country. Tomorrow I have some projects to inspect and I won’t stay in the office all day, the day after too I will be commissioning the new factors at the Northern and Savannah regions. We will take a holiday trip together when I come on leave next month. Joe you drop me at the office then you take madam home and come back for me later. Lieutenant Colonel Akatapori I know you are tiref so after dropping madam, drive straight to the house and get some rest.
Lt. Col. Akatapori: Your Excellency you know until you retire to your bedroom, my work is never done so I will like to wait until you are done for the day.
President R. Mensah: Lieutenant Colonel Akatapori, what I said was not a request or an appeal, it was a direct order.
Lt. Col. Akatapori: Sir yes sir.
First Lady: I am not so happy about your decision this evening my love. What time will you get to the house and what time will you eat? You know eating late is not allowed in our house.
President R. Mensah: Don’t worry yourself my first lady, I ate whiles on the flight and I am very satisfied because I ate much of the food that I was served.
First Lady: Hmmmmm I have heard you, now when you get home please find ways and means to make peace with the girls because I won’t be part of that issue.
President R. Mensah: That won’t be a problem, I bought a lot of gifts for them and I know they will forgive me the moment I hand the gifts over to them. (takes his phone out and dials a number)
On Phone:
Interior Minister: Good evening your Excellency, welcome back to your motherland.
President R. Mensah: Cut the formalities Hon. Tampuri Jawula, I was only away for some few days and I return to find out that I am a total stranger in my own house.
Interior Minister: Your Excellency, I am a bit confused with your statement. Please can you break things down for me?
President R. Mensah: Why didn’t you send me updates on the kidnapper that was arrested and what nonsense did I hear, the IGP displayed when he met the pressmen?
Interior Minister: Your Excellency, honestly I wanted to brief you about it via a telephone conversation but I realised what you went doing in Ethiopia was very important so I didn’t want to bother you until your return.
President R. Mensah: Hon. Tampuri Jawula, I won’t accept this childish excuse from you. I want to see you, your deputy and that uncivilized IGP right now in my office.
Interior Minister: Sir but you just got back from a long journey, please why don’t you rest so that first thing in the morning we come over to your office and give you updates.
President R. Mensah: I don’t remember appointing you as one of my advisers so please follow simple instructions and do as I say because I am boiling with rage right now and I don’t want you to keep me waiting for long. I have a lot on my table to work on.
Interior Minister: I have heard you your Excellency, we will be in your office soon. (call ends)
President R. Mensah: Lieutenant Colonel Akatapori, when you drop me at the office entrance, tell my speechwriter and personal secretary to join me in my office. Also call my chief of staff to come over to my office right away, I don’t know why she didn’t join the entourage that came to welcome me at the airport.
Back at Mansokrom Village:
Twum Boafo: (listening to his radio and talking to himself after the evening news) Oh so our young and promising president was out of this country all this while? He even got an award for his exemplary leadership against corruption. This tell me that he is indeed the chosen one and he will lead us to the land of milk.
Junior: (walks in) Daddy will mummy be okay?
Twum Boafo: Of course my boy, the doctor said she is down with typhoid fever but she will be on her feet soon so she joins us in this house.
Junior: Daddy what sickness is that and what causes it?
Twum Boafo: Mmmmm it is a sickness that one develops when leaving in an unclean environment. It can stay in your system for a very long time before it displays its signs and if you don’t treat it well, it might lead to death but in your mother’s case, she will be fine.
Junior: (sees a star falling from the sky) Daddy what is that? See the star is falling, is the world coming to an end?
Twum Boafo: Hurry up and make a wish before it vanishes.
Junior: I want to meet the president of this country soon so I tell him my father is innocent of the things he has been accused of. Daddy but why did you say I should make a wish as the star was falling?
Twum Boafo: Son your great grandfather who was my grandfather said, anytime you see a falling star then it means a great or prominent person has left us to a different world or betterstill died. He said if you make the wish early, that prominent person will convey your wish to God as he leaves our world.
Junior: Oh nice so it means I will meet the president very soon? I would love to see the man you have been saying good things about and tell him how proud you are of him and his achievements.
Twum Boafo: (smiles) Some dreams and wishes comes true only for kids who are obedient and perform their children roles assigned to them. It is getting late so go in an rest because we will go to the hospital early tomorrow morning to visit your mom.
Back at the President’s Office:
President R. Mensah: Ah you are already in Hon. Asantewaa, thanks for honouring my invitation even at a short notice.
Hon. Asantewaa: don’t mention your Excellency, I am always available to serve you and mother Ghana. The call that came from your secretary rather sounded destructive and alarming. Is everything alright?
President R. Mensah: For now I can’t say all is well but before we leave this very office we will get to the bottom of the matter. Also I don’t like the sound of your voice, are you okay?
Hon. Asantewaa: Mmmm I have been down with some serious cough and flu for the past 3days.
President R. Mensah: Oh I now get the reason why you were not part of the team that came to meet me at the airport. I hope you have been to the hospital for treatment?
Hon. Asantewaa: Yes please and I am not joking with my medications at all.
President R. Mensah: Oh that is very good, let me order for a hot ginger tea for us as we wait for the rest of the people we are to meet with. We spoke this morning on Skype but you never brought your sickness issue up, why did you hide it from me? Also did you see the vice president on your way here?
Hon. Asantewaa: Yes he was in a middle of a mobile phone call infront of his office when I walked pass him. I felt it was not necessary to inform you of my little sickness since you had a lot of important things to worry about.
Interior Minister: (walks in) Good evening sir and madam chief of staff.
President R. Mensah: Welcome honourable, take a seat. (orders for some drinks and tea on the intercom)
IGP: (walks in with his deputy and deputy interior minister) Good evening sir and welcome back to your country. (salutes with his deputy)
President R. Mensah: (calls his secretary to invite the vice president in) Gentlemen and lady, I miss confess I am not happy at all, I left the country some few days ago and it looks like I have been away for years. Before I left the shores of this land, right in this room I ordered you the IG to form a team that will go after the kidnappers who kidnapped those 3girls.
I read on the internet that within 24hours after giving you the order, you got one of them but no one in this room saw it necessary to update me on that. As if that is not enough, I am told you called for a press conference and in the middle of the meeting you arrogantly walked away from the press conference. Checkout the headlines of the news paper that will be published tomorrow on the screen there.
Interior Minister: Your Excellency, as I was trying to explain to you earlier on the phone. I knew nothing about the press conference, I watched the news some minutes ago before you called me. I wanted to put everything through writing and submit it to you tomorrow morning.
President R. Mensah: So what do you have to say to that Mr IGP because the person who stands in for you always says he has no idea to the action you displayed earlier today.
IGP: Your Excellency, I invited those journalist in because they wanted information and updates on the suspect we arrested earlier today.
President R. Mensah: On that screen over there is the full video of your press conference, watching the video I heard you saying some things that I jotted down. First you said the suspect is not a Ghanaian, secondly you said the suspect was once arrested and he broke out from your custody, again you claim he is known for doing such things and you are not bothered by giving such a lose talk, lastly you said he has refused to cooperate with you and you were bold enough to come and sit in the public domain to display your stupidity. Am I the one to teach you your job or you have forgotten how to extract information from suspects?
IGP: Your Excellency, with all due respect I……..
President R. Mensah: (cuts in) Hold it there Mr man, in communication when someone prefixs his statement with a phrase “with all due respect, then he or she is about to start a disrespectful or stupid statement. Are you certain that you wish to continue what you wanted to say?
What do you think will happen next in the President’s office?
Drop your views and comments as you do always so that the conversation will continue.
Happy Easter Holidays to everyone reading this story. May the crucifixion of the begotten son cleanse and bring a renewal of everything you have wished and prayed for.
