EPISODE 17
Eyram sat up in bed with a muted scream, and for a moment she was quite alarmed by the harsh light in the room.
Her parents were asleep in one of the bedrooms, and this was hers. She slept in darkness because the lantern she used attracted spiders, lizards and other crawlies to the room, and she did not particularly like them.
However, her room was flooded with light, and as she had not come out completely from the cobwebs of sleep, she wondered in a confused sort of way where the lights were coming from.
However, when the lights suddenly went out, it dawned on her that they might be the headlights of a car. She wondered if it was the Ya-Na’s car which had taken them to the forest the previous day, but she quickly dispelled that notion because they would not come and disturb their sleep this early.
And then it dawned on her!
Rupert and Jonathan had promised to come around in a fortnight. She had expected them to return by helicopter, but maybe they had driven.
“Rupert,” she said, and then she suddenly bounded out of the bed and raced to the door.
She was through the living room and out of the main door before she realized she was still in her very short negligee.
She stopped suddenly when she saw the huge car parked in the yard. Eyram could not make out the type of car except that it was big, looked sleek, and was powerful, probably a four-runner.
Its parking lights were on, dim in the dawn mist, and as she hesitated, she saw a figure coming rapidly towards her.
“Ram,” he said, mostly because he could not properly wrap his tongue around Eyram, and when she heard his voice her trepidation vanished, and she rushed to meet him.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and held him tightly.
“Rupert,” she breathed softly. “Why so early? It is barely morning!”
He laughed softly, and she found his voice pleasant indeed.
His arms went around her, firm and sure, and he squeezed her tightly against him, revelling in sweetness.
“Been driving twelve hours non-stop,” he said gently.
Eyram hid her face in his chest and slipped her arms around his waist.
“Hmm, you were that concerned about my sister?” she whispered, and it dawned on her that she could get used to this sweet feeling of being in the comfort of his arms.
“I don’t really care that much about your sister’s condition,” Rupert said carefully. “Well, it was a part, yes, and I really want her to get well again. But the main thing is, I’ve really missed you, Ram.”
She laughed against his chest.
“Well, that’s candid indeed,” she said. “I do love your attention, but stop running your hands over my ass. I’m not a piece of wood, you know.”
Rupert laughed deeply in his throat and brought his hands up to her waist.
“It is not easy having you in my arms and letting my hands remain still, Ram,” he said softly.
“I need love, Rupert, not lust,” she said as she put her arms around his neck. “But, for twelve hours just to see me, I guess you deserve a little kiss, right? So, come inside and let me get you a hot cup of coffee, and then I’ll brush my teeth and…”
She could not go on because he was looking at her in the gloom with bright eyes, and when he put his hands on each side of her face, she could no longer resist him, and she closed her eyes.
He kissed her gently and sweetly, his tongue probing gently and curling around hers. She felt her body responding as her arms tightened around his waist.
“Gentleman, we don’t do things here like the way you do it in your country,” Ivy Kedem’s indignant voice said behind them. “You must go through the customs first. Eyram, stop that this instant and get inside to cover up! What’s the matter with you, girl? What nonsense!”
Eyram laughed gently against Rupert’s lips when she felt his body going stiff with trepidation.
She pushed away from him and rushed past her chagrined mother, giggling as she went along. Rupert’s eyes moved from her sleek back to her jiggling butts under the flowing material of her negligee, and rested longingly on her incredible thighs, and then she was inside the house.
“Look at your face,” Ivy said as she pointed a hand at Rupert. “I wish you can see your face, all cut up and drooling like a playboy!”
“Cut the boy some slack, old woman,” Ken Kedem said from the doorway as he came out wearing only a pair of huge, baggy shorts. “Your daughters can make even gods fornicate. Rupert, my boy, this is a surprise! Come in, come in! The mosquitoes in this town are as big as hawks, and they have the vindictive bites of witches, I tell you!”
Rupert giggled sheepishly as he shook the older man’s hand, and then he looked at Ivy Kedem with an embarrassed smile.
“I’m sorry, ma’am,” he said softly. “My interests in Ram are very honest and clean.”
“They better be!” Ivy said, and now she smiled. “Do come in, my son. We have some good news to share!”
“I take it Effe is getting better?” Rupert asked as he followed them into the small room.
“Praise to our God!” Ivy said exuberantly. “We saw her yesterday, and she spoke to us!”
“Wow!” Rupert stopped, stunned. “Really?”
“Yes, she did!” Ivy continued. “Her face is back to normal, well, almost. And there was light on her face. But the most beautiful thing ever was her laugh, and her smile! And she forgave us. Oh, yesterday was one of the happiest days of my life!”
Rupert nodded, still shocked.
This was not what he had expected to hear.
He had been ready for the worst because that woman had looked more dead than alive when they brought her. If they had told him that Effe was dead, he would not have been so shocked as hearing she was obviously out of the chilly hands of death.
They all had an early breakfast of hot cocoa, hot coffee and lots of buttered toasted bread.
As the first rays of the sun caressed the sky, they retired to the back porch of the house and sat in the cane chairs. Eyram sat next to Rupert in one of the chairs whilst her parents sat in single chairs drawn next to each other.
They took turns to fill Rupert in on what had happened, and Eyram told him Effe’s conviction that Steve and Elaine had a hand in what had happened to her.
“Actually, that’s one of the reasons I’m here,” Rupert said sombrely. “I suspected as much. Steve Hollison had two former wives who died under the same mysterious circumstances, so I wasn’t comfortable when your daughter suffered the same attack. When we went back to Takoradi I told Jonathan to get a court order to freeze all Effe’s assets and bank accounts.”
“God bless you, Rupert!” Ken said suddenly. “I’m so appalled! That man should be imprisoned for murder!”
“We were too late, though,” Rupert said sadly. “Our checks indicated that all the monies in four of Effe’s known accounts which we obtained from her accountant, had been transferred out of her accounts.”
“Jesus!” Ivy screamed and clamped her hands to her bosom. “Oh, that is evil! And have you arrested Steve?”
Rupert shook his head regrettably.
“They’re smart, you know,” he said sadly. “Nothing could be traced to him because he used Effe’s known passwords and security codes to steal the monies.”
“But the dates would not pan out!” Eyram said as her anger rose. “If the transactions were carried out within the last three weeks, we can all vouch that Effe was indisposed within that period!”
“They’re smarter than that,” Rupert said softly. “They hacked into the systems of the banks and backdated the transactions to dates Effe was active and actually did some legal transfers. They also sold Effe’s house and her cars, and God only knows what else. In other words, they have cleaned her out…totally.”
“Oh, my God!” Ken Kedem whispered with horror. “That is diabolical. Surely, the house and the cars could be retrieved?”
“Sure, I guess, but it would take long legal battles, I foresee, between Effe and the people who bought these assets, because they were given legal documents with Effe’s pictures and signatures. The man who bought the house even had a video of Effe signing the papers.”
“That can’t be!” Eyram screamed with pain. “All that while Effe was in the hospital, or here! That possibly couldn’t be my sister!”
“Calm down, Ram,” Rupert said quickly. “Of course, we know it is false, but it would be hard convincing a judge otherwise. I believe Steve and co used highly-sophisticated masking gears to impersonate Effe, right down to her signature. They’ve been doing this for a long time. The picture is getting clearer, you know. They’re a savage group and they’ve been doing his for a very long time. Do you remember the tip of ampoule I found near Effe’s bed?”
“Yes, I remember,” Eyram said as she fought back furious tears. “You accused Steve of injecting Effe with its contents.”
“Yeah, I sent it to our labs in England, and fortunately we picked up a fingerprint from it. It is the fingerprint of a dangerous criminal called Vroom Minnow, popularly called Wailer. He’s on the wanted list of Interpol, FBI, CIA and KGB. He used to be a very deadly virologist, selling lethal viruses to criminal entities.”
“Oh, goodness,” Ken whispered with horror. “Then he could be the real kingpin, the one responsible for what is happening to my daughter!”
“My sentiments exactly,” Rupert continued. “We’ve been able to trace the deaths of four prominent and filthy rich men to this lady, Elaine Boateng. She was either married to them, or sexually acquainted to them. And in all four instances, ranging between varying dates, these men lost an awful lot of monies.”
“Jesus!” Eyram whispered. “It is all making sense now! They prey on wealthy people. Steve goes for the women, and Elaine takes the men…they kill them and take their monies.”
“As cold as that,” Rupert said softly.
“So why are they still walking free?” Ivy said, still looking dazed. “Why haven’t they been picked up and sent to prison?”
“They’re highly proficient, Mrs Kedem,” Rupert said. “They strike, and vanish into thin air without drawing attention to themselves. They’ve not even been linked to the murders because the cause of deaths of these people – both men and women – were passed as natural cardiac arrests. No foul play was suspected anywhere. Obviously, just like Effe told you, the venoms they were using didn’t leave any traces to be picked up by autopsies and medical examinations.”
“But you have a little proof now, dear,” Eyram whispered tragically. “Surely, you can trace them, arrest them!”
“I’ve raised the flags on them now, yes,” Rupert said grimly. “We’ve been able to piece together a little of their operations, and what was left was how they got away with murders that were passed as natural deaths. Now, with this evidence from this man in the bush about a lethal venom that leaves no traces, I’ll pass it into the system as added evidence. As to picking them up, they’ve somehow suddenly disappeared into thin air. I do suspect they operate under different identities in real life. But, no one gets away with murder. We’ll surely get them.”
“And, in the meantime, those bastards have rendered Effe homeless and penniless!” Eyram cried in anguish. “Effe toiled to get to where she is now! That was her sweat, her life! And they’ve taken it all away and left her almost dead! That is not right, no, not right in any way!”
Rupert nodded.
“That’s indeed a raw deal, but there are beasts like that in the world, you know,” he said sadly. “But we’ll get them, rest assured. Eventually. The good thing is, they were not able to sell Effe’s fashion house and her business assets. She’s still talented, you know, and if she comes out of this situation, she will rise again.”
“That’s the only consolation we have now,” Ivy said tragically.
“They must be arrested!” Ken Kedem said with ire. “This is too much wickedness! They must face the law!”
“True, but it is not going to be easy,” Rupert said carefully. “They’re a well-coordinated gang. We checked their names thoroughly, you know, from their histories and who they claimed to be. It turned out even their identities are false.”
“False?” Eyram whispered. “How is that possible?”
“The histories they have been using didn’t pan out,” Rupert said quietly. “Wailer Vroom, Steve Hollison, and Elaine Boateng are the names of dead people when we traced their histories. They don’t even exist.”
“Jesus!” Ivy Kedem said, stunned.
