Barina was filled with police personnel.
Rupert, once he had been revived by Doctor Anifat, placed an urgent call to Chief Inspector Jonathan Afful, and then he called his two assistants, Toby and Rick, to bring the helicopter to Barina.
Jonathan had quickly reached out to the police commander at Bolgatanga, who in turn sent his men to Barina with an ambulance and a squad car.
In the morning, Rupert was ready to leave the village again.
“Oh, but you can’t drive!” Eyram protested. “Not with your injuries! The stitches might come off and you would bleed again.”
“Eyram is right, Mr. Henderson,” Doctor Anifat said. “The injuries are too deep, especially the one on your arm. You have to allow it time to heal, so you must avoid driving for at least a week.”
“I’m not driving,” he said, trying to sound calm. “My men are brining a helicopter. I need to get back to Takoradi to address something urgent.”
“Then I’m coming with you,” Eyram said.
“No,” Rupert said quickly. “You must be with your parents.”
“No, I can always come back,” Eyram insisted. “We won’t be seeing Effe in a while, so I can go back to Takoradi. I need to get some more clothes for her. I’m coming with you, Rupe.”
“Ah, you’re a very stubborn woman,” he said weakly.
“It is good you know,” Eyram said tremulously as fear filled her eyes. “Why did that man try to kill me? Did he think I was Effe? Would they bring more killers? I don’t understand what’s going on, Rupe!”
He touched her cheeks gently.
“They wouldn’t dare try again,” he said. “This will throw them off for a while. They wouldn’t risk being caught. Moreover, I’ve been informed a police patrol team will remain here for a moment to provide security. They’ve given them a temporary house to operate from.”
And as Eyram was quickly finding out, Rupert got his way, and shortly after the dawn broke, the helicopter landed on the Barina field. Eyram also accompanied Rupert, much against his wish.
Rupert was surprised to see that Jonathan had come too.
“He came to the office and demanded to be here, boss,” Rick explained.
“Well, that’s great,” Rupert said as he got into the helicopter. He looked troubled when he sat down and looked at Eyram. “There was a good reason why I didn’t want you along, Ram.”
She looked at him fearfully.
“What is it, Rupe?” she asked.
“Have you put a hot tab on the Nissan Rogue, Jon?” Rupert asked.
“Yes,” Jonathan said. “Immediately you told me.”
“Good, because I saw at least two people inside that car, but only one came to Eyram’s place,” Rupert said in a troubled voice. “I think it was a hit team. And I believe one – or possibly two – went after Effe.”
“Oh, my God!” Eyram shouted, and her face was filled with horror immediately. “But no one knows where Effe is! How’re we going to know if she’s okay?”
“This is fucked up!” Jonathan said with sudden apprehension. “Damn! These guys seem very resourceful! What if they have some means of locating Effe?”
“I’m assuming they have,” Rupert said as he strived to be calm. “That is why I requested for the helicopter. I want you to fly low over the lake, Toby. We’ll check the foliage along the lake first. Look out for a break in the pattern, a canoe, a cabin, anything unusual! We must find them fast!”
The helicopter soared into the air as the villagers on the park shouted and waved.
Fifteen minutes later, they located the lake, and the helicopter followed its length from the wooden platform.
Almost forty minutes later, Eyram shouted and pointed.
“Look!” she said. “A huge wooden house! With green grass lawn! Over there!”
“Good girl!” Rupert said and put a hand on her waist. “Take her down there, Toby. I think we found our man.”
A moment later, the helicopter landed.
Toby and Rick were the first to jump out, and they were holding assault rifles in their hands as they advanced on the cabin.

Chris took out the tracking chip from under Effe’s right toe before she woke up. He was glad it was under the right toe, and she did not feel any pain. He treated the little incision he had made and covered it with Elastoplast.
When she woke up, he gave her delicious hot cocoa and toasted bread and scrambled eggs. She devoured it with delight, and then he carried her to the lake for a morning swim and exercise, which she enjoyed tremendously.
He brought her back to the ward to massage her, concentrating on her right side. He had just finished and put her in her morning robe, when he heard a helicopter overhead.
Chris froze suddenly, and his face went dark.
“What is that sound?” Effe asked suddenly. “Is it an airplane?”
Chris knew that the helicopter had landed on the wide green lawn.
Already, Dezzy was barking and had taken off at top speed.
“I’ll be right back, Effe,” Chris said grimly as his fury soared.
Had Wailer sent a hit squad again?
“What is it, Eden?” Effe asked, sounding worried because of the coldness in his voice.
“Remain here and be quiet, Effe,” Chris said as he quickly picked up the mask and jammed it down over his face. He quickly put on his jeans and then went out running.
When he threw open the front door, he saw Dezzy leaping at a white man with gun, and his heart sank with fear, sure that the man would kill his dog.
Dezzy landed on the man, growling wildly, and they landed on the ground. The man’s colleague hammered the butt of his gun into Dezzy’s head. The dog whimpered, and the man hit him twice more, and Dezzy went still.
With a roar of rage Chris jumped across the railing and sped towards them.
Toby, who was on the ground, pushed the dog off him with a shudder of fear.
“Shit me, damn!” he said with horror. “Is that a dog or a bear?”
“A German Shepherd, man,” Rick said thoughtfully. “Huge monsters.”
“Behind you at six o’clock!” Toby cried in alarm suddenly. “Fuck, that guy can move fast!”
Rick brought up his rifle and swivelled, but Chris had already leapt in the air and brought a savage fist into Rick’s face as he reached out for the rifle. A million lights exploded in Rick’s head as he dropped like a sack.
Toby tried to get to his feet and Chris kicked him so hard in the belly that Toby doubled over in agony and vomited.
“Jesus, who’s that guy?” Rupert asked with horror as he came up from behind and raised the pistol in his hand.
“No!” Eyram cried and pushed his hand back. “That’s him, the medicine man!”
Jonathan raced forward with his gun extended.
Chris was kneeling beside the dog and expertly feeling for a pause.
Dezzy whimpered with pain, and Chris gently rubbed his head.
“Sorry, old boy,” he said savagely.
Jonathan had covered the kneeling man with his gun.
“Hold still, mister!” he said in a grim voice. “Do not move!”
With a growl, Chris’ spun off the ground and crashed a fist into Jonathan’s gun hand. It was executed with such finesse and a blur of speed that the policeman did not see it coming until it was too late.
Jonathan moaned with pain and fear as his gun clattered to the ground. Chris lifted him up and slammed him bodily on the ground.
He raised his right foot to crash it into Jonathan’s face.
“Please, leave him!” Eyram cried and rushed forward to push Chris back. “He’s a friend, please! We mean no harm!”
Chris’ fury slowly ebbed when he saw and recognized Eyram.
“You again,” he growled.
Eyram bent to help the moaning Jonathan, and Rupert paused a little way off and looked at Chris with grudging respect. The man’s movements had been a fluid blur, executing martial arts skills that was as alien and as lethal as any Rupert had ever seen.
Dezzy was on his feet now, and growled ominously with his teeth barred as he fixed his mean eyes on Rupert.
“Hey, mister, settle your dog, man!” Rupert said.
Chris looked at him with narrowed eyes, and then he pointed at Dezzy.
“Dog, sit,” he said.
The dog stopped advancing and dropped on his haunches, but his dark eyes remained on Rupert.
“What do you want?” Chris asked darkly.
“Hitman attacked Eyram, could have killed her,” Rupert said quickly. “I figured they might come for Effe too. We want to know everything is alright with her. You didn’t have visitors last night, did you?”
“The girl’s fine,” Chris said and turned away from him. “Dezzy, come.”
“Hey!” Rupert said, and Chris stopped and turned. “It doesn’t work that way, buddy. We have to make sure she’s okay.”
“You’re not coming inside,” Chris said coldly.
Toby was trying to revive Rick, and he made circles around his temples to Rupert, indicating that Chris must be mad. Jonathan, moaning, was supporting himself on Eyram.
“Please, I was nearly killed last night,” Eyram pleaded mournfully. “The man involved wounded Mr. Henderson here. Please, I just want to be sure Effe is alright, please.”
Chris looked at her for a minute, and then he turned away.
“You alone,” he said.
Rupert nodded to Eyram, and she followed the tall, huge man across the lawn.
“How’s Rick?” Rupert asked with concern.
“He’s gonna be fine,” Toby said with grudging respect. “Bruce Lee over there is pretty mad, huh?”
“That was the African GojuFist, not Kung Fu,” Rupert said with a shake of his head. “Crazy martial arts. Knew only one guy versed in that. I don’t think we need to worry about Effe. That guy is enough.”
“He’s mad, simply mad!” Jonathan said painfully. “Never seen any old man moving that fast and with such deadly skills.”
“He’s not old,” Rupert said with a scowl. “The tone of his facial skin doesn’t quite match that of his shoulders and chest. The grey in his beard does not match the jet-black hair on his chest. He’s wearing a mask.”
Jonathan looked back at the huge man moving up the steps.
“I’ll be damned!” he murmured. “And Effe is all alone with him? With a man like that? This is unacceptable!”
