UNTIL YOU
EPISODE 4
The night was beautiful and peaceful as Naa stood on the balcony of one of the prestigious hotels in the country. That was her second night in a row and it had been simply incredible. The wind was soft as it caressed her bare hands as she stared into oblivion.
The moon was up and a million stars were spread across the sky in an awe-inspiring manner.
It had been one of the happiest weekends she had ever had after the painful moments she had experienced with the Nii and Korkor betrayal.
Â
They had both decided to put that incident behind them and build their relationship, focusing on the strength of their love and the prospects of a wonderful future.
They were back in school and a week after re-opening, Nii’s father had booked many of the students in the school into the hotel for his son’s 21st birthday celebrations. Everyone was expected to check-in on Friday after lectures and leave Sunday after lunch.
In all, about a hundred people had checked in. Being the most popular guy on campus, all his admirers – both male and female – did not want to miss the weekend of free fun for anything in the world.
Â
Friday night was full of movies and sex for the lovers on campus who had found some real alone-time inside the hotel to explore each other.
Saturday began with swimming and after about three hours fun with a lot of poolside activities, the real birthday party had started.
The long room chosen for the black-tie party had been decorated modesty but exquisitely. One of the walls had been used as a picture wall where pictures of Nii at various stages of his life had been put up in chronological order.
Â
Naa had been touched to see a picture she and Nii took the first time they went out officially, and it had been put up as the last picture, and she felt really proud and happy to be included in his plans.
His parents, grandma, siblings, and half-siblings had all come to grace the occasion. And it was refreshing to see how every single guy at the party donned a black tuxedo with a white shirt and a black tie while every lady except Korkor was in a white dress.
Naa was not too enthused to see Korkor present too but since the invitation went to all their course mates, she did not really have any reason to suspect anything fishy by her presence.
Â
She had not seen Nii talking to Korkor on any occasion after that dramatic and painful day. Naa had not spoken to Korkor since. She was very angry to see Korkor in a red and white dress in spite of the explicit dress code indicated on the invitations. However, not wanting anything to dampen her high spirits, she had completely ignored Korkor.
The party was so much fun with food and good music.
A few of Nii’s friends had put together a rap performance that had got everyone on their feet and cheering. Nii had chosen to cut his cake with the favourite women in his life to show appreciation for the care and sacrifices. His mom, grandma, his only sister, the nurse, and Naa Shika had stood beside him with pride and sliced the simple but beautiful cake through.
Â
The rest of the evening had been spent dancing, eating and circling. All too soon the celebrations had come to an end and everyone had retired to their exotic rooms for the night.
Fifteen minutes after they entered their suite, the bell to their room had sounded and Nii had ushered in a smartly-dressed hotel attendant.
The manager wanted Nii to go downstairs and sign some paperwork that couldn’t wait till the next day.
Nii thanked the attendant and changed into casual clothes and begged Naa to accompany him. Since she was looking for an opportunity to surprise him with the naughty outfit she had gotten for the occasion, she declined.
Â
She turned from the balcony and entered the suite to get ready for a special birthday lovemaking with her Prince Charming.
She pulled off her dress and hanged it. Then she brought out her suitcase to bring out the items she had purchased exclusively for the night.
And then she stared with shock!
The lacy panty, bra and other fancy and sexy lingerie were not in the suitcase! She could swear she packed them. Her handbag was still in the boot of Nii’s car so she decided to quickly dash to the car park and check it out.
She pulled on a loose dress and headed downstairs in a hurry.
Â
The sounds of giggles reached her ears when she hit downstairs, and she slowed down because the voices were uncannily familiar.
And when she rounded the staircase in the lounge, Â she saw Korkor and Nii in a tight embrace just at the foot of the stairs and she stopped dead in her tracks.
Korkor saw her then and smiled with a triumphant curl of her upper lip. Saucily, Korkor moulded her ample body firmly into Nii’s arms, drew his head down, and kissed him deeply.
“Nii,” Naa screamed with a pained voice and a shattered expression.
With tears already bubbling down her face, she swirled away from them and fled as fast as her legs could carry her.
Nii followed her, imploring her to stop.
Â
When she entered their suite, she slammed the door shut, missing Nii’s head by inches.
“Don’t come in here with your sweet talk. I’ve had enough of your nonsense and it stops now, you incorrigible womanizer,” she said painfully.
Nii threw the door open and entered, and his expression was shattered as he watched her putting her items together. She pulled the suitcase from storage and started stashing them inside.
“Naa, stop what you are doing. Look, I have been set up, ” he said as he tried to take out the clothes she was stacking into the suitcase.
“I hate you. I hate you. Oh, I hate you, you bastard,” she screamed and beat at his hands desperately.
Â
“Naa please, let’s talk about this. She set me up. She did that intentionally to stir up trouble.”
“And you did nothing to stop her. You deserve each other. You are both whores.”
“Please, believe me. I’ve not been with her since that unfortunate incidence. Please don’t let her win, please. She just wants my hide for not seeing her since that day, but I avoided her no matter how she much she tried!”
“Why the hell were you in her arms then? And why were you kissing? You are unbelievable, do you know that?”
“I was on my way up when she stopped me. She wanted to thank me for helping her get over her heartbreak… that’s how it started and then she asked for a parting hug and I didn’t think she was up to something sinister. I think she decided to kiss me because she saw you. I love you, Naa.”
Â
“Save that I love you crap for the pigs. I’m so tired of doing this. You keep messing with my heart and you are always saying you love me. The two acts do not jell, Nii, no! They don’t jell one single bit! Don’t you dare speak of love because you obviously don’t know the damn meaning of the word!”
Frustrated, Nii kept quiet and snatched the suitcase from her. He tossed it into the huge wardrobe in the suite, locked it and removed the key with Naa doing her best to wrestle the key from him.
When she was close enough, Nii pulled her close and stroked her hair just the way she liked it in a bid to calm her down but she continued to struggle. He cupped her face in his two hands to steady her head, then he clamped his lips on hers, muffling her rantings.Â
When he pulled away, Naa’s left hand came down hard across his cheek in a big slap.
Â
The impact was so pronounced he felt a splitting headache rushing through his head.
” I know I deserved that. Hit me as much as you want but I’m not letting you go at this time of night,” he blurted out as he walked to the door and removed the swipe card for opening the door.
Hurriedly, he stashed the card in the locker beside the bed, secured the lock and started to undress.
Naa Shika sat morosely on the bed still fuming with anger…and a deep-rooted pain. She wondered for a moment if she was overreacting to the incident, aware that Korkor would do anything to break them up. Naa had seen that vindictive look on the girl’s face just before she drew Nii’s head down and kissed him.
That sight still hurt her horribly, and filled her with seething anger.
Â
“So, why didn’t you push her away? Why, in the name of God did you allow her to put her stupid lips on yours. Why? You know just how painful it was for me to forgive you for your indiscretions the last time, Nii! If I meant anything to you, surely, you wouldn’t have allowed her to get that close!”
“If you had waited a little bit longer, you’d have seen me pushing her away, but you choose to think the worse of me on every situation. But it’s okay. I don’t want to talk about this again. You’ve already formed an opinion of me because of one silly mistake and no matter how many times I apologized for it, you’d still hold it against me. I’m done talking about this,” he said furiously as he headed for the bathroom.
He turned towards the door to the balcony when he remembered Naa could attempt using it for exit. He made sure it was locked and was on his way to the bathroom when her words stopped him.
“You won’t even apologize for what you’ve done,” Naa said softly as she wiped tears from her eyes.
Â
He stopped and turned with obvious exasperation.
“I won’t apologize for something I didn’t do. I’ve done nothing wrong. Maybe you should consider what you really want from this relationship. I make one mistake; you claim to have forgiven me for it and yet the least excuse you get, you throw it right at me. Do you think it’s easy living like this? You see me talking to a girl and that is reason enough for an outburst. What do you want me to do, stop talking or being friends with everybody else because I’m with you?”
Not waiting for a response Nii entered the bathroom and turned the tap on.
Shocked by his outburst, Naa Shika sat on the bed with a long face. She had never seen him this angry ever.
Â
Maybe that was the problem. Nii was an extrovert and to make that even worse everybody liked him. Well, he was a very brilliant young man with good looks and money. Most of his friends were ladies and she was aware most of them wished they were more than just friends with him. And he was refusing to understand what that knowledge could do to a woman in her stead.
To make it worse, there had been instances where he had had flings with some of the ladies even when he was officially her lover. He had admitted to them and apologized as if that should end it but it just did not happen that way, no, not for Naa.
She kept living in a quagmire of recurring pain, with stretches of happiness between. That was not the way she wanted to live!
His notion of commitment to a relationship was deeply warped, and it seemed this was the kind of pain she needed to accept to live with if, indeed, she wanted to continue in a relationship with him.
Â
Maybe if she could make him feel the way she felt with all the nonsense going on all in the name of love, he would appreciate how painful living with him had been for her.
Maybe she should also surround herself with male friends, flirt with them and if she could go all the way, sleep with them and see how he would take it.
The talking was not helping and she was aware it might never work.
With that thought in mind, she decided to let sleeping dogs lie. She pulled off her dress and padded naked to the bathroom without a second thought.
And she was not even crying anymore.
The ice in her heart had suddenly gotten colder… way colder!
