The Silent Vow
EUNICE ANSAH-AGYEMAN
THE SILENT VOW
When Eli walked in a little after eight in the night, Sedinam was in the living room watching a movie.
That was a little strange because she hardly watched any TV.
In the past, it was Eli who had coerced her into watching something with him.
By reflex, Sedinam’s eyes shifted to the clock in the living room, and she was surprised he was home that early. That was the first in a long while he had come home that early.
After exchanging pleasantries, he took his dinner, which was already served. He ate alone since Sedi indicated she had eaten already.
“I’m hitting the showers, care to join me?”
“Sorry, I took my bath after tending to the plants in the garden,” she replied.
Â
She was surprised at how good she felt saying no to him. In the past, she had always bent backwards to please him to make their marriage work. She had made the most sacrifices just to foster peace in their home. Now, she felt her sacrifices were never appreciated by him no matter her efforts.
“Oh, what a shame,” Eli said dejectedly as he took the stairs upstairs.
Sedi finished watching the movie and was surprised to find Eli up when she entered their bedroom.
He was using his phone when she walked in but put it down immediately.
“How was your day, honey?” he asked quickly.
“Good, I guess. The only problem is my car’s hood is badly-dented.”
Eli showed genuine worry on his face when she told him about the accident.
“Did you go to the hospital?”
“No. I didn’t see any need for it. I’m okay,”
“And the imbecile, is he going to fix the car or not?”
Â
“It was my fault, Eli. I stepped on the brake pedal accidentally.
“Still, he hit your boot. That makes it his fault. Tell me he’s going to fix it.”
“No, he is not. He offered, but I declined. I was just grateful his car was not that much affected.”
“You did what? What money do you expect me to use to fix that? Business is not that good anymore, and you don’t bring in any income.”
That hurt her, but it was the truth. She did not bring anything to the table, and the earlier she fixed that, the better.
When he saw that Sedinam had turned to the wall without saying a word more, he knew he had hit below the belt. She had been a tremendous help when he decided to go on his own. She had basically provided all the money he needed and throwing that bit to her in times like these was really unfair.
He apologized for sounding ungrateful, gave her a brief kiss, and bade her goodnight.
Minutes later, Eli was fast asleep.
When she realized she couldn’t sleep, she enabled the night mode feature on her phone and surfed on the internet to while away the time. She needed to find a job as soon as possible.
A pop-up WhatsApp message made her turn to her WhatsApp.
Â
“Still up? Feeling okay?” the number she had saved that very day had written.
“Yea, I’m cool. Just one of those nights when sleep decides to pick a bone with you.”
“Now you got me more worried. I should have insisted we went to the hospital for a checkup,” Bernard replied.
“My sleeplessness has nothing to do with what happened today,” Sedi assured him.
“Does it have anything to do with the tears in your eyes earlier?”
When Sedi didn’t reply for a while, he knew he had scratched a raw sore and quickly apologized for it.
“Why are you up at this time yourself?”
“That’s my routine. I normally sleep after midnight.”
“Why is that? Don’t you have to work in the morning?”
“Nope.”
“What do you do for a living, if I may ask?”
Â
“I’m a Civil Engineer. I have my own consultancy, so I don’t go through the rush hour like everybody else unless it’s urgent.”
“I see. Good for you.”
“And you, what do you do for a living?”
“Nothing at the moment but I was a banker.”
“Wow, what will make you leave a job like that.”
“Married?” Sedinam asked before she could think about it.
“Will tell you when I see you again over some snacks.”
“Why are you so sure you’ll see me again?”
“I don’t know, but I was hoping you did enjoy my company a little today.”
“We’ll see about that. I’m not making any promises though.”
“I know you wouldn’t, but you will think about meeting me again, won’t you?”
“Why should I do that?”
Â
“I don’t know, maybe you need someone to talk to.”
“Since when did Civil Engineers become psychologists?”
“Since today at exactly …”
Sedi laughed heartily for the first time in months. This guy was growing on her.
“I hope you know I am married.”
“Yeah, kind of saw that. I’m not hitting on you or anything. I just like you.”
“That’s how it all starts.”
“Don’t make assumptions, please. Just take it as it is, I like you. Goodnight, fair lady.”
“Good night, fair man.”
Sedinam put down her phone and just laid in the darkness with lots on her mind. Most of her thoughts were about Sefa.
She would give anything just to see him one more time and find out if everything worked out for him. How she would love to see his handsome face and feel the warmth of his hands around her.
***
The sun was setting, and it was a beautiful sight as his warm hands went around her tightly. They had watched the sunset a million times and every time was exhilarating.
He kissed the space between her neck and shoulder gently, not very sure what he was doing. She leaned into him and closed her eyes as she allowed the electric feeling from his touch run through her without inhibitions.
When the sun finally set, and the clouds began to gather for the night, they both knew it was time to trek back home but for some reason, they were both not ready for that.
They were seated in the sand in the most deserted part of the beach. He got to his feet reluctantly, helped her up and turned her around to face him.
“You know I love you, right?” the young man asked.
“Yes, I do and I love you more.”
“I think we should be heading back, though. It’s a long way back.”
Â
“No, not yet. I don’t want you to go,” she moaned.
“I don’t want to go either, but I must. Mom is making it almost impossible for me to be here. If I stay, I’ll have to drop out of school and make a living. With my current qualification, I’m afraid I will not get a good job to give you the life you deserve. Let me go and complete my education. By that time, I’ll be an adult and can decide on what to do next. I will come back to you. That’s a promise.”
“What am I supposed to be doing when you are not here. My heart only beats around you.”
“Complete your education. Go for your dream and carry me in that heart of yours. I love you, and only you.”
Tears started coursing down the young lady’s face and the young man, tearing up himself, used his fingers to wipe out her tears. Then, his lips found hers, and they kissed for as long as their hearts could take, their hands exploring and giving as much pleasure as they could.
“If we don’t stop now, we might regret it,” the young man said, his desire reflected on his face.
Â
“I don’t want you to stop. I want you to be my first,” the young lady said as she placed her lips on his again and kissed him until they both could not take it anymore.
He led her to the spot they had spread their fluffy blanket, and within minutes, their clothes were scattered around them. He was soon on top of her, thrusting in slow rhythm as their two bodies united in an explosive encounter that left them both breathless by the time they climaxed two seconds apart.
***
Sedinam felt a hand grabbing her buttocks, and her eyes flew open to see Eli right behind her, trying to raise one of her legs.
“No, Eli. Not now!”
“Why not, Sedi? And for how long should I wait for you to be ready. I have needs as your husband, you know.”
Sedinam almost screamed at him, angered by the fact that he was going on as if nothing had happened.
His insensitivity in this regard got to her most. Here she was trying to clear her head and decide what she really wanted to do with the big news he had dropped, and all he was thinking about was getting in between her thighs. She felt disgusted when he touched her again but closed her eyes to ward it off.
His hands explored, and every touch felt like knives on her skin. She had to really steel herself to stop the scream that was lodged in her throat.
Â
When he touched her core, she had to fight very hard not to close her thighs on his hands. And when he united their bodies, a silent cry left her heart, and her eyes got wet with tears.
She laid there, wishing he would climax soon and free her from the torture she was going through.
The tears just spilt over in torrents when he held her close in his throes of passion, and she knew things would never be the same for them again.
