Safety in Our Homes
by Cobby Grant
Safety is the Light; let it Shine…
It makes me extremely happy that you have made time to listen to me as I talk about Safety. Having worked for a safety-conscious entity for a long time I believe I have garnered a thing or two about the subject matter
What do we mean when we say ‘SAFETY’?
It is the condition of being protected or protecting oneself from danger, risks or injury.
Today, I am going to talk about Safety In Our Homes
The home is where most of the action is. After a hard day’s work or school, one looks forward to a relaxing time at home, wherever that is.
One usually looks forward to a fulfilling time with their children, some refreshing time on gadgets and for some, tumble time with a loved one.
Sadly, our homes are full of props that pose danger to us and our families.
The baby’s toy that was thrown to the ground could become an endangering weapon to everyone in a household.
The unattended spill could cause a serious accident.
The electric socket one often forgets to switch off when leaving home could cause a fire outbreak.
Even the duvet that was left half-hanging off the bed after a passionate night could also result in a not-so-passionate affair in the ER scene as one could easily trip over it and get badly hurt.
The list goes on and on and I must say that it behoves on all of us to be vigilant in the upkeeping of safety in our home environments, especially when kids are in the picture.
Kids can be a danger to themselves. Research shows that about 90% of trips to the ER are caused by injuries to children in the home.
Sad to say, the kitchen where delicious and tasty foods are prepared and enjoyed every day could also pose a serious danger to us. The oil or soup spill on the floor, the dripping tap, the loose shelf, the soup or gravy left and forgotten on the active stove, and many more could all become a safety hazard.
When we are safety conscious, we can make our homes a haven for us and for everyone who visits or lives with us.
General Safety Tips
- Put off lights and plugs when leaving the house or when not in use
- Install smoke detectors in your home if you can afford it.
- Stay in the kitchen until your cooking is done and the stove is off.
- Iron your items in bulk and make sure the iron and plug are off. It is believed that when ironing is done in bits, say in the morning when there is a rush to get ready for work or school, the tendency to leave the iron on is high.
- Make sure TV stands, bookshelves, beds, and other furniture and fitting around the house are firmly installed. I trust we wouldn’t like to have our beds wobble noisily as we do what we do on our beds. Neither would we, I suppose, want our beds to cave in as we toss and turn in them.
- Keep the floors dry at all times.
- Keep a working fire extinguisher close by.
Tips For Keeping Children Safe at Home
- Put outlet plug covers on electric sockets.
- Keep small objects that could be a choking weapon out of reach.
- Lock medicines, cleaning and gardening chemicals away.
- Keep lighters and matches out of reach.
- If they are under 3, don’t leave them alone anywhere in the house, even for a second.
- Dispose off plastic bags properly, making sure kids can’t access them.
- Install window guards for windows above the ground floor.
- Place edge protectors on the sharp edges of wood and metal furniture and fittings.
- Lock guns away.
- Place a lockable fence around the swimming pool.
- Make sure the strings to the curtains or window blinds are well tied and secured.
I believe we have all gotten the drift on how we can ensure safety in our homes.
