EPISODE 20
Effe stared after Chris for a moment, and then she walked up to the counter, paid for the use of the washroom and went inside. The bathhouses were surprisingly pristine-clean and spacious.
Effe took a long shower and attended to her needs.
When she came back almost an hour later, she found Chris waiting for her with a couple of shopping bags in his hands.
He had also taken a bath and was now wearing a T-shirt.
When they got to the truck, he handed her one of the bags.
“Bought a change of clothing for you,” he said calmly. “Hope you like it.”
Effe looked up at him in the darkness.
“I was going to ask you where I could buy at least one dress,” she said with sudden gratitude in her voice. “Thank you, Chris, but you know I’m not the same size I used to be eight years ago.”
“I know,” he replied. “They will fit.”
He then opened the door for her.
Effe climbed into the truck.
He had not only bought a lovely green dress but also undies, and everything fitted her perfectly, just as he had said.
And then, quite suddenly, Effe was struck with a wave of melancholic blues she could not understand. She sat on the bed with a sad expression on her face, her mind suddenly drawn to the past, to her moments with a man she had thought had been an evil incarnate.
And she had seen Chris, seen his face, heard his voice, as he ruthlessly beat Baaba and made love to her in the living-room!
But now Chris was saying he had not been that man!
Who had it been then?
It was so easy to believe Baaba’s version of the story because every bit of it made sense. The only aspect that really jangled was the fact that somehow, they had managed to let Eyram testify against Chris without telling her, and against her wishes.
But, believing Chris raised a whole lot of terrifying questions!
If, indeed, he had never laid a finger on Baaba, how had Babs sustained all those horrible injuries? Baaba had been admitted to the hospital and treated for days! So, indeed she had suffered these incidents of battery and violence from the man she claimed to be Chris.
However, if it had not been Chris that Effe had seen, who had it been?
Who was it that bore such a remarkable resemblance to Chris?
A twin?
A doppelganger?
Someone who was wearing a mask and makeup as Chris had suggested?
And if that were the case, why had Baaba gone to that extent to lie to her? Why should she and Jonathan stoop to such horrifying lows to mess up the life of Chris Bawa this way?
Chris had been very fair to them, to say the least. He had caught Baaba and Jonathan horribly betraying his trust in the most beastly nature, but he had been prepared to let them enjoy their lusts. The only thing he had done was tell them he would divorce Baaba after the death of Baaba’s father. He had even told them to go ahead and have a baby if they wished.
Why then had they gone so far to destroy him so completely? Even though he had been the aggrieved party, he had still bent over just to make them exist with him in peace.
Could Baaba be this evil?
And if she believed Chris, then it meant the moments she had been with him and led him on, thinking he was a beast who only wanted to get between her thighs, had been real moments.
He had really been in love with her.
His kisses, his touches, his gentleness…everything had been real, but she had been too blind to see the truth.
Effe sighed deeply.
Oh, Chris!
And then she was jarred rudely and almost violently out of her reveries when her phone rang!
Startled, she picked up her bag and fumbled it out!
It was ringing, for real!
She was back on roaming services!
And it was Steve Hollison calling her!
Her Steve!
The man who loved her so much without any ambiguities, a man she felt profound respect and admiration for, and until now had had no reason to believe she could not settle down with him. But now, having seen Chris again and heard conflicting tales, she felt sad and a little confused now.
She picked his call.
“Effe, my love!” Steve Hollison cried with absolute relief. “How could you do this to me? I’ve been worried sick about you! Eyram informed me you called them and yet you never bothered to tell me anything! Is this how to treat a man you claim you love? You’re hurting me so much, Effe!”
She felt the guilt creeping up her heart, and the enormity of it almost brought tears to her eyes.
He was right, of course.
In the frenetic and painful moments of experiencing Chris’ hatred, everything – and almost everybody – had been relegated to the background. She had almost forgotten about Steve, and used the loss of the roaming signal as an excuse in not contacting him.
But she had managed to call her family, and should have also called Steve immediately afterwards!
“Steve, I’m so sorry, please, my love, forgive me, okay?” she said quaveringly. “There was chaos in Libya, my love, and something really awful happened. I’m so very sorry. Didn’t want to scare you.”
“Not hearing from you and listening to all that horrible news coming from that area killed my soul, darling!” Steve said tearfully. “Glad to hear your voice again, though. How’re you now? Where are you?”
Effe spent about twenty minutes chatting to Steve then when the ice was broken.
He was like that, so gentle and understanding. He never held on to grudges and always wore his love for her on his sleeve. Indeed, he did not deserve the way she had secluded him.
“You don’t have to come all the way by road, Effe, please,” Steve finally said. “Listen, one of our teams of experts is carrying out philanthropic surgeries at Niger. They also take relief items to some refugees in that sub-region. One of the pilots is leaving Ghana early at dawn tomorrow and would be in the border town of Assamakka in Niger. The town is right on the route you would be taking. If you can reach there tomorrow, the pilot will pick you up and bring you to Ghana, my love. You will be passed as one of the doctors so there’ll be no reason for protocol.”
Effe gasped sharply!
Finally, a way home!
Oh, how happy she would have been just a couple of days ago!
This was heavenly news, so why was her heart suddenly beating with such trepidation? Why was she so hollowed out all of a sudden? For a moment, she felt the sharp tongue of disappointment and indecision knocking at the door of her reasoning.
She was not happy about this news that should have made her ecstatic and caused her to dance with happiness a few days ago.
“Effe, are you there?” Steve asked anxiously.
“Yes, my love,” Effe said in a rush. “That’s such wonderful news. I’ll ask the drivers if they can get me to Assamakka tomorrow.”
“If they can’t get you there please charter a taxi or a private car if you can get one, my sweet darling,” Steve said anxiously.
“Taxis are dangerous, darling,” Effe said. “Kidnappers parading as taxi drivers. The drivers keep me safe. I’ll ask them if they can get me to Assamakka and then I’ll call you back.”
“Yes, please do,” Steve said hurriedly. “I’ll call you in the morning and finalize it. I miss you, Effe, my love, and I want you back with me. I love you so much!”
“Miss you more, Steve,” she said softly. “I love you too.”
She cut the call and sat for a long time staring at the phone.
Suddenly, it had come down to this!
Just one more day with Chris, and then back to their destinies.
The thought brought a blinding pain to her heart that left her breathless.
After a while, she flipped through her phone again and called Eyram.
They spoke for about five minutes, and then Effe cut the call and sat dejectedly for a moment.
Her battery was almost gone, but she put in a call to one more person.
Baaba Brooks.
“Effe!” Baaba screeched with delight when she picked Effe’s call. “Oh, thank God, thank God! I called Steve a few minutes ago to enquire if he had heard from you, and he told me a helicopter would be bringing you home tomorrow, God willing! I’m so happy for you, girlfriend!”
“I’m with Chris, Babs,” Effe said softly, and her voice was very cold indeed.
“What?” Baaba asked. “I didn’t hear you! What did you say?”
“The driver bringing me home, Babs,” Effe said softly. “It is Chris Bawa. He now drives trucks from Ghana to Libya. Chris has saved my life twice already…the same man you let me see as a beast, Babs. He is now my saviour, and he has told me everything.”
“Chris?” Baaba whispered, so stunned that she could not speak for a moment again.
“Yes, Babs, Chris,” Effe snapped furiously. “Do you know something funny? He accused me of testifying against him in court, and Eyram admitted that you indeed forced her to testify. How could you betray me this way, Babs? How could you keep this from me for eight years?”
There was a long silence, and then Baaba sighed heavily, and when she spoke her voice was suddenly almost tiny, and was shaking when she spoke again.
“Forgive me, Effe, but there are things you do not understand, many things I have to explain to you,” Baaba said morosely.
There was a pinging sound in Effe’s ear from the phone, and she knew her phone was going off.
“Listen, Babs, my phone is going off,” Effe said in a firm voice. “But Chris denied being the man in your room that day I saw him beating and supposedly making love to you even when you were sick. The Chris I have been exposed to these couple of days will never raise his hand to strike a woman. I also know you took everything from Chris, including his shares in the company his father formed.”
“Effe!” Baaba cried frantically. “Please, listen to me!”
“No, Babs, I’ve listened to you enough!” Effe cried painfully with tears in her eyes. “I’m going to find out the truth, Babs. And if it turns out that Chris is right after all, and that you used someone else to deceive me, and all that happened eight years ago was some plot planned by you and Jon to hurt Chris simply because he found you cheating on him with Jon and threatened to leave you after your father’s death…if Chris is right, Babs, I promise you I’ll take this matter to court and make sure Chris gets his company back!”
“Effe!” Baaba cried, appalled. “Are you threatening me?”
“Yes, I am, Babs!” Effe cried passionately. “If you have played me for a fool, I’ll never forgive you! I’ll testify against you, and make sure Chris gets what is rightfully his!”
“Effe, please, calm down and listen to me, I beg of you!” Baaba said, and her voice was frantic and unsteady now, almost tearful, and then the phone beeped and went off.
Effe took it from her ears as the partition opened and Chris Bawa came into the cabin. He leaned against the seat and crossed his arms across his chest, regarding her silently.
“Oh, sorry, you need to get dressed too,” Effe said hurriedly and stood up, brushing tears from her cheeks.
Chris smiled gently at her.
“Yes, Mike, Chipa and Wailer are outside to take you to the barbecue,” he said softly. “I’ll get dressed and join you later.”
The cabin was small with him around, and suddenly she became profoundly aware of him.
“Alright,” she said and made to step around him. “We’ll wait for you outside then.”
He reached out and his arm encircled her waist, and then he drew her against him suddenly.
“Chris,” Effe whispered in an unsteady voice.
“I heard you on the line with Baaba, and your offer to help me,” he said, his voice suddenly tender, causing Effe’s heart to thud erratically. “Thank you, Effe. Seems I have been wrong about you on some things.”
She could not speak although there were a million things her heart wanted to say, and then she shuddered as his other arm went around her, and in the confines of that cabin they were as close as two people could be, and their hearts sang a little unique rhythm to achieve a moment of bliss.
She closed her eyes and sighed quaveringly when his lips found her soft, parted, delicious ones. Effe moaned as her arms crept around his neck and she pushed into him, kissing him back with a hunger and desperation that took her breath away.
His lips blazed across her throat as his hand moved agonizingly over her left breast, the other one slipping with devastating sweetness across her derriere.
Effe moaned and felt a little shudder moving through his powerful body.
His hunger was a relentless lion in perfect harmony with the cravings of her heart. She strained against him, her body melting and just burning in that inferno of thirst and hunger, as passionately and boisterously rampaging as she had ever felt.
As she felt him hard and uncompromising against her belly, her right hand raced down the front of his shorts and brushed over his belligerently craving desire. It was shocking to feel the girth of his, the throbbing demand of his need.
She had never done that before, touched any man’s except his, and feeling its breath-taking power made, her crave to have it out, to hold it and assuage its delicious anger.
That inner craving inflamed her, and her hunger was a terrible beast that made her strain against him, her hands roving across the thick hairs on his chest and then descending to his waistband.
As his hands excited her nipples and drew her into his body so that not even air would have had the space to pass between their pressing bodies, Effe moaned with passion and began to push her hand into his waistband.
Suddenly, he lifted his head and looked into her hunger-filled face with narrowed eyes.
Effe could see the deep uncontrollable famine of his need for her on his face.
“Do you still have it, Angelface?” he asked gruffly.
It was an explosive blast from the past!
She had been his Angelface, and he had been her Chris-Love!
He had uttered it, just like eight years ago when, in the deep throes of their passion, he had asked if she still had it…
Her virginity!
This was how it always broke eight years ago!
Their moments of deep passion that always made her forget she was on a drive of revenge for Babs!
The moments she had stopped acting and been a puppet under the expertise of his fingers and lips, when he had driven her crazy with a physical and emotional need!
And then, getting to the point where sanity would have been driven out and only a physical slaking would be an answer, he would find the strength to stop and ask…
Always the same question…do you still have it, Angelface?
And always she had the same reply…
“Yes, Chris-Love,” Effe answered painfully, and when his arms slackened around her, she almost pushed them around her waist again.
He pulled away from her with an effort.
Her eyes went down and saw his enraged desire still fired-up in front of him, just like it had eight years ago…so poignantly vivid, as if they had still been in their cocoon of bliss and eight years had not come to drive the cravings of their hearts stale.
“He still waits,” Effe said miserably as she felt the sting of tears in her eyes.
This had been the most horrific moment for her, and she wondered what she would have done if Chris had not stopped it. The confusion, craving and urge were all mixed up in her head and churning her heart most alarmingly, and she felt so utterly unhappy.
“He will wait for eternity now, I guess,” Chris said softly. “You have another man you love, one you’re going to. His waiting is without hope, I guess.”
Effe nodded miserably.
Yes, Steve, of course.
Funny, she had been the advocate of undiluted faithfulness, the epitome of fidelity, never for once allowing herself to be swayed from the straight and narrow road of being chaste for the man she had chosen to be her life partner.
She who had condemned Chris and Fatima for their obvious adulterous relationship, and yet here she was, a package of confusion in the arms of Chris Bawa, whose sheer enigmatic magnetism would mock her deepest principles and allow herself melt at his touch.
Enough…she had to breathe sanity back into her system!
Without another word, she stepped away from him.
When she left the cabin, Chris leaned against the side and blew air slowly through his lips.
“Effe Kedem, Effe Kedem!” he said miserably. “There you go again. Messing up my heart!”

Baaba was sitting on the bed, and on her face was a look of absolute horror as she stared at Jonathan Afful who had gotten out of bed and was leaning against the wall in his boxers.
“She can be trouble, Jon!” Baaba said with horrified worry. “I know Effe! When she feels this way, she can be real trouble for us!”
“I know,” Jonathan said grimly as he moved off the wall and walked purposely toward the bedroom door.
“Jon!” Baaba cried, alarmed. “Where are you going to?”
“For a drink!” he barked at her as he crossed to the door and opened it.
Baaba stood up and followed him to the huge, luxurious living-room.
Jonathan crossed the miniature bar. He picked up a tall decanter and put in ice cubes. He mixed himself a drink and took a long pull, and then he looked over at a stunned Baaba who was perching on the arm of a seat only in her panties.
“Call Eyram,” Jonathan finally said.
Baaba raised her eyebrows.
“Why?” she asked softly.
“Ask her how Chris came to be with Effe in Libya,” Jonathan said harshly, his fear making his voice tremble. “Day, circumstances, details. I wanna know everything, so pump her for the information.”
Baaba stood up and rushed to the bedroom.
Jonathan followed at a more leisurely pace.
When he entered Baaba was already speaking to Eyram, and Jonathan motioned to her to put it on loud speaker.
He sat on the edge of the bed and listened carefully as Baaba and Eyram conversed. It took almost ten minutes, and then Baaba finally cut the call. She sat looking at Jonathan with fear on her face.
“Did it help?” she asked, her voice a croak.
Jonathan nodded as he put his drink down on a small glass-topped table by the bed, and then he picked up his phone. He flipped through and called a number.
He put it to his ear.
“Hello, Ted,” Jonathan said in a serious voice. “We have a problem.”
As he spoke Baaba’s eyes opened wider and wider, and she did not know whether to be happy or horrified by the callous plan her husband and the other man were forming on the phone.
Jon looked at Baaba coldly when he dropped his phone.
“Call Steve now,” he said softly, but there was an ugly glint in his eyes.
Baaba looked at Jon with tears bubbling in her eyes, and her lips trembling with trepidation.
“Jon, please,” she whispered hoarsely. “You’re going to make Effe hate me now! She’s been my only friend!”
“Stop the bullcrap!” Jonathan screamed and then he picked up the glass which had a residue of his drink and threw it across the room. It shattered with a nasty crinkling sound, making Baaba jump and shudder with fear.
His face almost maddened with fury; Jonathan glared at her.
“Call Steve now!” he hissed menacingly.
Trembling, Baaba called Steve Hollison.
