THE AFFAIR
EPISODE 8
Henrik woke up with a start when he stretched in his sleep and his hands fell on a body beside him. He turned swiftly and saw Melisa curled peacefully at his side. He realized they were both still naked.
Events of the past night came flashing back: the drinks at the bar, the kiss and eventually having sex with Melisa. He cursed himself for breaking his promise to Kiara-joy. For the first time in his life, he felt remorse for what he had done and hoped that it wouldn’t come back to haunt him some day.
He slowly brought himself to a sitting position in an attempt not to wake Melisa.
Â
“Sneaking out on me?” Melisa said playfully. “Last night was magical. I’ve never had it like this in a long time. You are incredible and I am glad I met you here. After close to a decade of trying, I finally get to feel what every woman dream of. I really enjoyed it.”
Henrik was speechless. He still fought with the guilt he felt for betraying his wife. He got to his feet and picked his clothes that were scattered all over the floor. Dejectedly, Henrik stepped into the bathroom to get dressed. Melisa followed him and wound her arms around him tightly.
“Ready for a second round?” Melisa asked seductively.
“I need to get ready for the conference,” he replied.
“How about getting together later in the evening?” Melisa pushed.
Â
“I don’t think that would be possible. My flight is in the evening. Just about an hour after the conference. Besides, I’m meeting a friend before the flight. I will see you around.” Henrik said and headed for the door.
“Just like that? I thought last night meant something to you too. Now, after the magic we shared you are walking out on me as if nothing happened? No, hug, no kiss, nothing. After what we shared?” Melisa said sadly.
“Melisa, please stop being over-dramatic. Yes, we had sex. We are adults and life must go on. Do you want me to drop everything for you because of a night together? Please, don’t disappoint me. I don’t need that right now. I have a conference to go to and I have already scheduled a meeting with my friend before all this happened, do you want me to scrap all that because I chanced on you?” Henrik said, irritated.
Â
“I’m not asking for much Henrik. Just a little time with you, that’s all. I want to feel loved and I got that from you last night. You made me feel like a Princess. I want to hold on to that memory. Is that too much to ask from you?” Melisa answered tearfully.
Henrik realized he had made the biggest mistake of his life then.
He could have done better. A little grip on his self-control would have been prudent.
Of all the women in the world, Melisa was the last person he should have been intimate with. He knew she had a crush on him way back. He had heard her say a million times that she was in love with him. Granted, he enjoyed the sex whilst it lasted but that was that. He wasn’t looking for anything more afterwards. He hadn’t planned on seeing her again, at least not deliberately.
Â
Here he was, standing right before her and she was asking for more than he had bargained for. He stared at Melisa for a while without saying anything. He knew he had to be careful with her or the whole thing would backfire.
Henrik took her hands in his and apologized for being an imbecile. He led her to the sofa and sat down with her. He placed her head on his laps and stroked her hair gently. After she was calm, Henrik asked to leave and promised to meet her for lunch close to the conference area. He planted a brief kiss on her lips and vanished to his room to get ready for his presentation.
Â
He told himself over and over again that he shouldn’t have made the trip. Really, he should have heeded his instincts not to make the trip. Now the die was cast and this affair would break him if he didn’t play his cards well.
It was true he had been bored, a little drunk and lonely at the time it happened but Melisa also made him feel sorry for her. He was so sorry she was going through a hard time in her marriage. He sought for the one reason that made him do it but couldn’t pinpoint it. Finally, he convinced himself it was because he was a little drunk. Henrik parked his things into his suitcase and checked out.
His presentation went well. He stayed in the conference afterwards with little interest.
Â
He met Melisa for lunch as promised during the lunch break. She went on and on about her marriage troubles which didn’t move him anymore. She talked about suspecting Abel would eventually leave her.
Melisa talked about feeling alive for the first time in a while and thanked him for making her feel wanted and appreciated again. She told him how much she would miss him while he was gone and tried to convince him to reschedule his flight to the next day or two so they could spend more time together.
Â
Henrik, on the other hand, couldn’t wait to be rid of her. He gave laudable excuses to wiggle out of her web and insisted he had to fly back to Ghana that very evening to meet a client the next day.
He lied to her that he also had a good time and thanked her for her time. Henrik bid her goodbye and went back to the conference.
Henrik took the next available flight to Ghana after meeting with his old pal who was based in London hoping that whatever happened in London will stay hidden forever.
