The Affair suspense intensifies…

THE AFFAIR
EPISODE 9
Henrik settled in quickly after returning from the conference in London.
It wasn’t like he had a choice.
There was so much to do he didn’t have the luxury to brood over spilt milk. What was done, was done, he couldn’t change that even if he wanted to.
Audrey surprised him by completing all the assignments he had given her.
He decided after his return to give his family a little more of his time than usual. He even, on occasions, picked Chelsca from school and stayed with her till Kiara-joy returned. Henrik offered to routinely drop Kiara-joy at the Shop and pick her and Chelsca up every Friday. He suggested to his wife that it was time they considered having another child.
One hot afternoon as he went over some final details for his summaries for court the next day, a call came in.
“Hello handsome.”
“Hi, Melisa.”
“Eii, look for me small eh. I miss you.”
Henrik wondered how she got his number and why she was calling him.
“Are you there?” Melisa asked.
“Yeah. How have you been?” Henrik said, recovering from the shock.
“I’m good, and I’m in town. Was wondering if you would be available for lunch with me.”
“Not really. What’s the occasion?” Henrik asked rudely.
“Why, you need an occasion before you can take me out for lunch? You disappoint me, Henrik.
These past few months all I have done is think about you. I miss you every second of the day. I’ve waited for a simple hello from you. I’ve looked forward to seeing your face, I’ve dreamt about you in my bed caressing me and making sweet love to me. I guess I’m the only one who’s got a problem here, right?” Melisa recounted sadly.
“Melisa, sorry to disappoint you but what happened between us did not mean I was looking for a relationship with you. Let’s be matured about it and move on. We can’t hold on to something we never had. I had a great time with you while it lasted, don’t ruin it by making me regret it. You are married and that’s the reality. I am not available for any relationship with you or anyone else. Let me just hold on to the beautiful experience we shared, please. Stop pushing for something that won’t happen. That’s asking for too much.” Henrik retorted.
“I wish it was that simple. Maybe it is all very easy for you because you are used to that kind of thing. I am not implying I am a saint here but I can’t put what happened between us behind me just like that. I intend to hold on to what we shared if it’s the last thing I do. Please, I just want to see you.”
She paused on a broken voice, and then continued softly.
“Even if it’s just for a minute or two. I have fallen in love with you again, Henrik. Please don’t push me away. I need you in my life. You are the only reason I wake up every morning now. You are the air I breathe. Don’t take that away from me. Please let’s talk about this. Help me with this unfortunate problem of falling for a married man. I love you with all my heart. That is the gospel truth.”
Henrik was totally dumbfounded.
What in God’s name was Melisa talking about? In love with him for what? What had he gotten himself into? How on earth was he going to shake this one off? What was he going to do? These and a million questions run through his mind. He admitted he had bitten more than he could chew on this one.
“Melisa, I ……”
“Henrik, I can understand your confusion. I didn’t plan for any of this. That day, when we made love, it was just a spur of the moment thing. It wasn’t supposed to mean anything. It was supposed to be just a casual affair where the two parties get up the next day and forget all about what happened and moved on with their lives. But that did not happen, at least not from my end.”
He tried to speak, but she went on quickly.
“This is all new to me, Henrik. Granted, I had a crush on you in the past. I say in the past because when I met Abel, I finally knew what I was missing. I didn’t think I could love anyone as much as I loved him. Now, I’m feeling even a stronger love for you. All I need is some closure. A little time with you to see if this thing that’s eating me up will die off. You have no idea how hard I fought not to contact you over the past months. I had gone to bed imagining you beside me and reliving the magic we shared that night.”
Melisa paused, and again Henrik could not utter a word as he felt the coldness washing over him.
“Let me see you at lunch today. Besides, there is a little twist to the normal. There is something very important you need to know. Something that cannot wait a second longer. Pick the place and time and WhatsApp me with the details. Let me warn you though, if you don’t meet me by close of business today, you will force me to show up in your house this evening. I don’t think you want your dear Kiara-Joy to hear what I have to tell you. Have a good day!” Melisa said and cut the line before Henrik could respond.
Henrik got up from his desk and walked to the window. He drew the curtains and looked outside.
He stared into oblivion and wondered how he had been so selfish and loose. What did Melisa want with him? What would he do if she didn’t want to let go of what happened between them?
He thought about Kiara-Joy. How would she take it if she found out he had been unfaithful to her? Just when he had devoted some time to get closer to his wife and child, this had to happen? He had given his word that he would never look at another woman let alone touch her. Now look at the mess he’s gotten himself into. All because of a night of selfish pleasure?
A beep on his phone brought him to reality. He took the phone and read the notification. His next appointment with a client was thirty-minutes away. For the first time in his career, he felt like rescheduling. He walked over to his desk and buzzed for Shanel. She was not at her desk. He tried Audrey’s, she was also not around. It was obvious that they had both left their mobile phones on their desks otherwise they could have been reached somehow.
He got up from the desk in a fit of anger and walked towards the door. He threw the door open with a force so intense Shanel was taken aback. She had just returned and was headed for her Boss’s with a document that was urgent.
“Where the hell have you been?” Henrik asked rudely.
“I was in the archives looking for the document you asked for yesterday. Sorry!”
“You should have the common sense to let me know when you would not be at your desk. I wanted to reschedule my appointment with the Simpsons but looking at the time now, I guess I have no option than go through with it.”
“Sorry, Sir, the Simpsons are in the meeting room. They were early so I took them there and told them you will join them when the time was up.”
“And you didn’t think I should know they had arrived? You better get your act together, Shanel. You are beginning to piss me off,” Henrik said angrily.
Broken, Shanel looked at her Boss with shock written all over her face. She looked at him and looked for answers for his foul mood. Henrik’s words had cut through her like a double-edged sword. She knew she wasn’t perfect, but she took pride in the fact that she was good at what she did and throughout her career nothing had proved otherwise. She had consistently won the best worker of the year for three consecutive years. And now Henrik had told her she was pissing him off?
“Sorry, sir. I didn’t tell you because you had always insisted not to be bothered when the people you are meeting arrive early. Sorry if I offended you in anyway by my actions,” Shanel said and turned to leave.
Realizing he had been very unfair, Henrik asked her to come into his office. Shanel entered and stood at the visitor’s side. Henrik beckoned for her to sit but she remained standing. He asked her to take some documents for authorization from the Managing Partner and apologized for his actions. Shanel didn’t utter a word and left after Henrik dismissed her.
