CHAPTER 17
It was close to three o’clock in the afternoon.
The sun was shining in all its glory and the heat from it could be felt everywhere.
Prince had been in surgery the whole day.
It was really a busy day with several surgeries scheduled.
He had very little time thinking about Maya who had avoided him for a week.
He was hurt.
Very hurt by the fact that the woman he loved unconditionally could give up on them so easily.
He was aware his Mom was very hostile to her over dinner but he would have still believed in what he wanted, had the scenario been reversed.
There was no way anyone could convince him not to marry Maya. It was something his soul had craved for all these years.
Prince had just made the final stitches on the surgical cuts of his last patient.
He cleaned the wound and handed over to the nurses to finish processing the patient for the Ward.
Hers was a complicated and sad case of spinal injury.
Annie was only twenty-five years old.
Her father had organized a big birthday bash at the poolside of a luxurious hotel to celebrate his only daughter among six siblings.
In their excitement, a friend had played a little prank and pushed her into the pool when she was busy talking to her boyfriend.
It was just to be for fun but when Annie did not come up the water a few minutes after she plunged into the pool the lifeguards went to work.
She was brought out unconscious.
She had smashed the back of her head against a wall and lost consciousness in the process.
When she regained consciousness, she could not feel her legs.
She had cried her eyes out every day after that.
She was referred to him and he had scheduled her for surgery without delay.
He was sure surgery with a bit of physiotherapy would get her walking again.
Prince stepped into the washroom to freshen up and then head to his parents.
His mom had offered to pick up little Maya from school.
Events of the past weeks flooded through his mind as he allowed the cold water to wash away his fatigue, frustration and heartache.
He was very worried about the divorce certificate his Mom mentioned.
He thought it was a done deal when the judge heard them and granted the divorce petition.
Prince had signed some documentation after the court appearance and he thought that was it.
He wondered if it was really necessary to brandish a divorce certificate to prove the point in his case.
Everyone knew Mabel abandoned them close to six years ago. They sure could not call that marriage, could they?
He had called his lawyer to check up and advise him accordingly.
The truth was, he wasn’t sure he would need that damn certificate anyway.
From the way things were, Maya had already given up on him.
His first intuition was to fight but what was there to fight for when the person in question did not want to be with him?
He got dressed and stepped into his office to pick up his belongings and was surprised to see Maya seated in the guest chair.
Prince gazed at her for a while.
He saw how disturbed and sad she was.
He felt that strong urge to pull her in his arms and kiss all her sadness away but fought it.
“Hi”
Prince managed to say, still battling with his conflicting emotions.
“Hi. I know I have behaved childishly and caused you to doubt my feelings for you. Nothing will make me happier than becoming your wife. I just felt I wasn’t good enough for you. I was convinced your mom was right, you need a classy lady beside you when you attend all your social gatherings and official functions, but then there’s this part of me that can’t let go. Oh, I love you more than you can imagine. I don’t want to live without you so please forgive my silly behaviour and love me.”
“You know it’s very painful when the love of your life does not see that you are worth fighting for. I’ve been thinking for this past week and the only logical conclusion I could come to was that you don’t love me enough. I don’t believe in hiding your head in the sand when a problem crops up, I believe in doing my best to find a lasting solution to it.
You have caused me a lot of heartache this past week and you have no right to do that to me. Do you think I will shut you out like you did when your family opposes our relationship? Indeed, my Mom went overboard that day but I warned you that she was a very difficult person and she felt like betraying Mabel and her family if she gave her consent to us. “
“I said I was sorry. I didn’t know what else to do. Prince, dear, I thought you would be better off without me. I didn’t want to complicate your life or cause problems between you and your mom. I know you love her very much.”
“You know what? This is not the place to discuss this. I need to pick Maya from my parents. You can pass by this evening if you still want to talk about this. I really have to rush out.”
Maya got to her feet when Prince picked up the car keys from the table.
She was not sure why he was being so mean even though she had apologised but she did not complain.
Prince held her back when she tried to leave the room obviously hurt by the way he was treating her.
Maya felt butterflies in her tummy when Prince’s hand touched hers. She had missed him so much.
Prince felt a strong urge to pull her close and taste her sweet ruby lips.
“Maya, I don’t want you to think that I’m pushing you away. You have no idea what I’ve been through because of your silence and cold treatment. You never returned my calls or texts. Do you know what that little girl had done to me over this period just because she wanted to be with you so badly? I had to lie that you had travelled to get her off my back just because you didn’t want to see me or my trouble. Maybe that’s what we are to you. I’m very disappointed by the way you handled the first problem you and I encountered.”
Maya walked over to his side of the table and threw her hands around his neck.
She looked straight into his eyes.
“I am deeply sorry for causing you pain, Princy. I was hurting and lost. And I felt unworthy of your love. But I love you with my soul. Please, forgive me.”
Prince was speechless.
The sincerity and body language behind the words Maya spoke broke down all his anger, pain and frustrations.
Prince smiled weakly.
“Please, why are you being so hard on me? I’m really sorry for putting us through this pain. I suffered too. Let’s put it behind us and move on. I’m ready to move on if you will have me. No one will love you as much as I love you.”
“It’s not like I’ve not heard you. That’s one weakness I have. When I’m very hurt, it takes a while to get over it. The way you treated me was very unfair and it shook me off balance. It created doubts in my mind and it will take time to get it out. I care very deeply about you and that made the pain most excruciating. Apology accepted but you have to promise me you won’t go MIA on me again. Whatever problems crop up we have to talk about them. You have to tell me exactly how you feel about it then we will take it from there. Promise me we will never go to bed with an unresolved issue or problem between us.”
“I promise with all my heart! Now can I kiss you?”
Prince smiled heartily this time and closed the gap between them. He drew her closer.
His lips descended on Maya’s and they both rekindled and renewed the feeling of love, hope and trust between them.
When they broke apart, there was nothing more to say.
The feeling was too deep and Prince knew if he did not do something quickly about the way he was feeling, he was going to take her there and then.
He removed Maya’s hands from around his neck and smiled again.
“The way I’m feeling now, if we don’t get out of here, I will break my promise to you. I take it we are still making the trip to Takoradi the day after tomorrow. Let me treat you to dinner at my place but please don’t come alone. Bring our son. I’m going for little Maya too.”
It was Maya’s turn to smile.
She had been very stupid thinking she could throw the beautiful thing they had going away.
She was aware Prince completed her. He was the final piece of her life’s puzzle.
