EPISODE 16
Prince was in the kitchen putting things in order after cooking for a picnic he had planned with his kids when he heard the sound of the doorbell.
He looked at the time and smiled to himself.
He was not expecting Junior until an hour later but he was sure Maya had brought him early so they could have some quality time together before they left.
Prince hurriedly wiped his hands and headed for the door still in his kitchen apron with a broad smile on his face.
He opened the door and saw his mom standing in the doorway.
“Mom, what a surprise!” Prince stated and planted a kiss on each of her cheeks.
His mom pushed him aside and entered the house.
Prince asked to be excused for a few minutes and entered the kitchen.
She admitted the place looked cleaner and more organized than before.
She had not been to her son’s house in a while.
Humming to herself, she entered the living room and saw that all the wedding pictures which hanged over the walls in the past were no more.
The woman saw that a portrait of Maya’s son in a baseball jersey and cap hanged right opposite the entrance to the room.
There was also a picture of little Maya and Maya on the other side of the wall.
“Can I get you anything, mom?”
Prince shouted from the kitchen.
Prince walked to the living room when she did not answer.
He met her standing under the picture of the two Maya’s.
“Has it come to this? Do you even know this girl’s background?
Have you checked she is not a criminal or something?”
“Mom, I think you are getting ahead of yourself. Maya was homeless at a point but that does not make her a criminal. I don’t know why you can’t just accept that I love her. We have a son together and all I want is for all of us to be together. It that too much to ask? My happiness should be your only concern.”
“You are not thinking straight Princie, my dear. What shows the boy is even yours? What if she had contracted some deadly disease from living in the streets? We all know what homeless people do for a living. She can’t convince me otherwise. All I’m asking of you is to use your head. Your heart feels sorry for the girl, she has managed to convince you all the hardships she went through was your fault and that’s why you feel sorry for her. You don’t love her. It’s just pity at play. You can pay her off and close the chapter on this. I’m sure she’s only interested in something but definitely not love! Please give me a break…what would she know about love?”
“Mom, you are not being fair to me. I’m a grown man and I think I have a fair idea what love is. I wish my own mother will support me especially when I take a step I know will make me happy. You were there when I thought she died. You saw my pain. More importantly, you saw my anguish and desperation. If it was not love please tell me what it was. I’ve loved this girl ever since we met.
Circumstances forced us apart and we have been given a second chance to live this all-encompassing love that seems to have taken over my very being. It shouldn’t matter what school she went to, where she grew up or what qualifications she holds.
All I know is I love her and want to spend the rest of my life with her. In my practice as a doctor I’ve come to know there’s no difference between any human being. We all get sick and eventually die. At the end of the day we are all buried six feet under. This is my chance to live, please don’t take that away from me. I really do love her.”
“Love, love, love! What if love is not enough? What if her past catches up with her and puts you and little Maya in danger? Have you thought about it, son. I do care.”
“Yeah, I know you care, Mom. I love you for that but you have to trust me on this one. I’m very sure of what I’m doing. She’s my life.”
“What about Mabel? What if she comes back?”
“Who is thinking about Mabel? Mom, that chapter of my life is closed. I really don’t blame her for what happened. I married her for the wrong reasons and ended up hurting her. But I learnt by lessons that’s why I want to do things right this time. Mabel and I are over. We are divorced, remember?”
“Divorced? When did that happen? How come we were not briefed about this?”
“Well, I kept quiet for little Maya’s sake. Three months after she left, I received the divorce summons through her lawyer. There was a note that she needed that so she can marry the ex-boyfriend so they could go abroad together. I met her in court and after proceedings the judge approved the petition. I signed some papers a week after without hesitation and that was the last I heard of her even though we have a child between us.”
“And did you receive the divorce certificate?”
“What divorce certificate? I signed the papers so that’s final.”
“I won’t believe you are divorced until I see the certificate. And the fact that you did not receive it could mean a lot of things. Maybe she sent those documents just to test you and you didn’t help by signing it. I know she loves you. Maybe she wanted you back.”
“Mom, Mabel and I are finished. There’s nothing to get back to. I don’t love her. I love someone else. Please stop pushing. I need your blessing to marry the woman I love. That’s all that matters now.”
“Well, get me the divorce certificate and I will see about that. I still think you need to consider marrying that girl. She’s pleasant to look at but it’s what is inside that counts. That girl is trouble, trust a mother’s instincts on this.”
Prince gave up trying to let his mom see what he feels for Maya. It was like they both had made up their minds.
He found no energy trying to get his mom to see things the way they were.
One thing that unsettled him however was the divorce certificate she talked about. Did one really need something like that?
He remembered the hearing.
The judge had simply asked if he agreed to the annulment of their marriage from the courts and that he was not being intimidated in any way to give his consent.
The judge had asked if he agreed with the ‘ irreconcilable differences’ reason cited for the suit.
He had answered in the affirmative to all the judge’s queries and he had been discharged.
He remembered the lawyer insisting they go for counselling before the court hearing but he was simply not interested.
Mabel had been in court too that day.
She had not said much since she initiated the process.
She had passed by later that day to pick up her few personal belongings.
They didn’t say much to each other that day.
Prince remembered saying sorry for hurting her but she didn’t say anything.
She was only interested in the house she got as settlement out of the divorce and asked when she would get the papers.
Prince had informed her he needed three months to serve adequate notice to the occupants.
Mabel had directed that he handed over the keys and all documentations of the house to her lawyer after the three months.
What hurt Prince most was that she never talked about little Maya.
When he asked what she intended to do with little Maya since the court granted her custody, she told him she was his to keep and didn’t want to be bothered by raising a child of his.
Prince made a mental note to look into the certificate thing.
“Well, I must be on my way now. Get me the certificate, will you?” Prince’s Mom said and stepped outside.
Prince saw her to her car and waited till she was out of the guarded gates and went inside.
He finished his preparations for the picnic, took a bath and waited.
Prince junior came on time unaccompanied for the first time.
Prince was disappointed Maya did not drop their son especially after the way the day ended the previous night.
He had wanted to make sure they were still on the same page as far as their relationship was concerned.
He shelved his worries and fears and took his kids to woodland.
Woodland was located in the outskirts of town with a lot of greens and birds.
It was a vast land with different types of trees and various recreational facilities.
It had a playground for kids, and also had a canopy walkway, a swimming pool, a rope course, horses and a mini zoo.
He managed to get little Maya to face her fear of heights by letting her take the canopy walk.
He went with her the first time and convinced her to go on her own a couple more times.
Little Maya was so happy she was practically running the walkway the fourth time she tried it.
His son had beaten him on a horse race three times in a row.
They had all gone for a canoe ride even though he was scared of water.
They watched the crocodiles come and go out of the lake at the other fenced side of the lake.
Little Maya fed a couple of birds and they took a lot of pictures of the serene environment.
His son challenged him to the Rope Course but he declined.
He was not sure he could pull that off.
He had finally gone with one of the attendants and beaten him to it.
Prince junior reminded him so much of his youthful days, fearless and ready to try new things.
They had finally spread out their mats on the grass and eaten lunch.
He enjoyed every minute of his time with his children and the fact that the two of them got along so well brought peace to his troubled mind.
He was troubled indeed.
His Mom was trying her best to dissuade him from marrying Maya.
Somehow, she had gotten to Maya who had distanced herself from him.
Maya had not responded to his calls or text messages and had deliberately avoided him since the dinner with his parents.
Prince was aware his Mom went too far with her insecurities and expected her to fight for their love.
It was understandable that she might be hurting over what went down at dinner with his parents but he was hurting too.
This was the time for Maya to show him she would stick with him no matter what.
Prince dropped Junior at the gate to their house and tried to see Maya but to no avail.
She had conveniently left home when she knew he would stop by to drop Junior.
He had checked the restaurant on their way back and was informed she was home.
Junior tried to pursuade his dad to wait a while but he was done fighting.
He told the boy there was something urgent he needed to do and left with his daughter.
